Classic Thai food in a refined space with exposed-brick walls & colorful paper umbrellas overhead.
Order soup today, not hot, and tastes is OK level, I must tell truth, because I am level 8 in Google map, I hope the restaurant do improvements next time.
Long time established Thai restaurant. The food was aroi mak. Service was friendly. Would return again
One of the first Thai restaurants in Auckland. Exposed bricks give great warm dining environment. We had one of the best Thai dishes served here for our birthday party. Great place for functions, general dining, lunches as they offer lunch time dishes. Parking is nightmare as it is just about anywhere in Auckland CBD. Google parking near it as there are quite few paid carparks. Staff is friendly, bookings are preferedl as it is quite popular Thai restaurant.
The place was nice. The food we had for dinner was really good, had no complaints. Until it came to dessert. There is about 4-5 things on the list. I tried to order the chocolate dessert and there wasnt any. So we tried to swap to a different one which didnt have enough portions for all four of us. So two of us swapped to the creme brulee. Which was the worst decision ever! It was green and too warm and tasted awful. Not the best way to end the night.
Great service and food, chicken soft and juicy, loved all the flavours. Pork dish was ok but not as tasty and soft as the chicken. I always enjoy going to this restaurant.
Good food and reasonable price. Lot of seating.
Got take away. Quick friendly and wonderful food - some of the best Thai food I’ve had outside of Thailand. Reasonably expensive though I thought.
I was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the recent reviews but decided to give this longstanding restaurant a shot (established 1989and I’m so pleased I did! The food was absolutely delicious, servings are generous and the service was great. I had the chicken red curry and wok fried vegetables and both dishes were very flavorsome with great amount of texture, crunch and the perfect amount of heat. Yum!
Visited this restaurant 24.8.19 for dinner. Although the food was nice, it was nothing special and it was over-priced. The service was awful... surly, angry-looking wait-staff who made no attempt to engage with us. They just snapped questions at us “ready to order?” and “you finished?” was all we got. No “how is your meal” or “would you like to see the dessert menu”. Rude. Would never go back there. If you want to run a restaurant for God’s sake put a smile on your face!!! There are too many good alternatives in Auckland so my advice would be to give this relic a swerve.
Nice place and food was with flavour. Good service as well. Food seems to be good as we were 15 of us and no one complaint that food is not good. So I think its a good place to eat for good tasty food. Will try different dish next time for sure.
We came in a large group of 30, wonderfulservice, great wine list with one of my favorites. Food was excellent and plenty of it. Will be back
Worst food In Auckland.Bland food, loud crowd, courteous staff, but will not recommend to anyone.
Great food. Though a bit dear then other. Have a nice bar to enjoy as well
We been there a few times, usually the food is awesome. This time, not so. Firstly the Tom Kar... well... tasted like something was missing- watery. The chicken in it was like boiled slices of chicken, quite tough and flavorless. Very disappointing Tom Kar that night. I ordered mango & sticky rice. Its great to see that on the menu but the sweet coconut cream on top couldnt have been more than ONE TEASPOON FULL? Come on Mai Thai, you can do better than that, there should be much more cream topping for the sticky rice. Thats what makes the dish so delicious, no need to skimp on that, the authentic dish normally comes with about a quarter cup of cream sauce. Please give more cream in a jug or bowl.
Been here a few times. Today I tried the express lunch. The platter was really tasty and I enjoyed the spring roll and the chicken satay. Asked to swap out the mains for massaman which was not on the list and they very kindly obliged. The meal deals really represent good value for money. Even the prices off the menu are very reasonable. The food tasted great and the staff are really friendly. I need to come here more often when I am in Auckland. Its a hidden gem.
Good authentic Thais restaurant in Auckland CBD. We had a seafood tom yum hot pot & a seafood som tum. Both were really nice & not too hot.Service was fast (probably because we came in at non-peak hours). Reasonable ambience.Interestingly, even we had booked online & mentioned that on arrival, it didnt seem that the restaurant staff paid too much attention about that.We were too full after 2 dishes & therefore didnt try other dishes (A quick glance at the other tables, other dishes looked quite appealing). Wed probably go back & sample them
There was a group of 7 of us tonight plus a baby. All started well with a nice high chair for the baby and a plastic plate and cutlery. We started placing our orders, and our entrees came super fast. As expected the food didnt taste the best. Asked for chili on the side and we didnt get it until we were half wag through our mains let alone with our starters. The mains presented well but lacked taste. There was extra salt in the red curry. The coconut rice had no coconut taste. Not a place Id be coming back anytime soon especially when there was no smile on our elderly waitresses face at all. Also overcharged us with the chili. Worst Thai place in Auckland. Thai places are usually super friendly and have nothing but good service and food. This is nothing but.
Food was delicious, well spiced and reasonably spiced. Staff were also friendly and accommodating to requests. Highly recommended.
Good tasting (and inexpensivefood. Large portion of rice! Friendly staff. You get water free of charge and the waiter will not try to force you into buying something other to drink. Recommended - especially if you plan to go to the Sky Tower. The Sky Tower is just 50 meters from the restaurant and you can see parts of it from inside the restaurant.
.(04/2018)This is one of our favourite Thai restaurants in CBD.This restaurant is conveniently located over Victoria Street West and can be easily spotted on the roadside from a moving vehicle in normal traffic. Easily accessible.Well managed, organised and nicely maintained.Spacious and comfortable seating. There is dedicated section for catering to big groups.Beautiful ambience and cosy atmosphere.Well timed and cordial service. Helpful and cheerful staff.Good variety of authentic Thai food including plentiful options for vegans and vegetarians.Fresh preparations. Delicious food and good presentation.Table service. Offers takeaways.Reservation can be made in advance and is recommended for big groups.PayWave facility is not available at this location.Good for groups, celebrations, family, kids and catch-ups.Normally busy during peak hours.Good place for quick bite.Outdoor seating is not available.Could not notice wheelchair accessible seating or high chair in plain view at this location. There is no dedicated parking area available for this restaurant although ample paid parking can be found around.Entrance is not wheelchair accessible due to the stairs.......................................(08/2017)Well located over Victoria Street.Congenial staff and lovely ambiance.Friendly and fast service.Delicious Thai food.Good for groups and celebrations.Enjoyed the experience.
Too oily. We ordered spring rolls and red curry. Both the dishes did not taste so great. The service on the other hand was good. The staff was pretty courteous.
This place is around forever, I wouldn’t rate it as one of my favourite Thai restaurants, it is certainly not upmarket (although it’s not that cheap either), not modern nor stylish, but it’s not pretentious, serves good Thai food, very spacious and great for group dining. Had hens night there once and they even allowed some insane entertainment in their semi-private area...🤩🤩 BYO too.
Being such a well known place, I expected more. For the cheap and cheerful surroundings, I expected the menu to be a bit more like that too. I dont think it mattered to many of the patrons on the Saturday night when we went in - lots of drinking, celebrating and noise. Because of that, Id think twice before taking a young family in on a Saturday night.
Going from few years to Mai Thai but was disappointed by the taste yesterday. In Auckland the choice and level of international food has gone so much better in last 10 years, and anything less than best does not work anymore. Though the service is good as always.
The food is good but the quantity is less. Used to be excellent. Lunch specials are fine.
Great service, happily took a last minute booking on a saturtay night of a group of 9. Food came out fast, the staff were very friendly and accommodating and the food was delicious 👏👏
Staff forgot to smile; who wants to work during Xmas! Apart from that, red curry felt like it had raw chicken, and carrots were stale. The fish is recommended (saved the day!)Not worth the $$. Ive eaten better at the alley ways!
We paid above average prices for dishes that tasted like they came from a cheap Chinese restaurant. Admittedly we accidentally got two stir-fry style dishes because our server, who seemed like she was new, goofed up our order, so maybe the curries or other dishes are better.
Dont be fooled by the exterior, the inside is a nice classy Thai restaurant. Its huge! I ordered my typical Pad Thai and I asked for spicy and it was delicious! They dont dumb down the spice level here.
Food is overpriced for portion size. Quality of food ok. Definitely not the best.Asked for a table and got moved to a busy part. I asked if we could move to another table and told we are only two and cant get use a table for four as they are busy. Half of restaurant remained empty and was nearly completely empty when we left 20 minutes later. Waiting staff needs to be more customer centric as coming across as rude. I dot recommend this place due to quality and quantity of food and service levels.
One of the oldest Thai restaurants in Auckland. Good reliable quality food and consistent service. Bit old decor but otherwise ok.
Delicious food but they insist that all the people at our table had to buy something of a minimum value. We had a leaving dinner for a friend and people who came to say good bye had to end up buying something when they didnt want to. It was a shame that they made us do this as otherwise its a nice place, but this definitely put a dampener on things
Very busy Thai Restaurant, one of Aucklands originals. Service at dinner time with a full restaurant was intermittent. Food was tasty, reasonably large portions but a bit on the more expensive side of Thai Restaurants. No wheelchair access - you need to go up a staircase to get here. One of the few restaurants that still do BYO wine. There are also some spaces where you can have a group in their own dining area. Staff were friendly.
I took my 1.5L bottle of wine. (One cork in the top, obviouslyThey then argued saying it was 2 corkage fees. Excuse me?? M8 I tried to google "wine bottle with 2 corks" and even google cant come up with that nonsense. Would not recommend unless you dont mind paying double for one corkage. ☻
Rude staff, average food. They made the function I was celebrating really difficult. Imposing all sorts of silly restrictions on ordering, and then redacting them. If youre in the market for good Thai food I suggest you go elsewhere.
most terrible dinning experience in a while. we came into the retaurant at 8:30 on a sat night, placed the order, and the waited for half an hour with only drinks served. asked the waiter, he told us there was a big table before us. then waited for another 20 mins, we asked again, the waitress told us the dishes are still being cooked. we chose to leave the reataurant, the male host said sorry, but i doube he meant it.
Popular place! Although many restaurants dont open on Monday nights in Auckland, so I guess that helps. Nevertheless, this place has been here for years, so longevity must suggest they do a lot right. My Penang curry was tasty and served quickly, although the pumpkin was a little undercooked. Food is a little pricey, but the restaurant is licensed and it was great to enjoy a wonderful Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with dinner.
Yes all restaurants cost alot but you really shouldnt spend the Money or Time at this one. First of all Staff grin when they see you arrive ( I noticed this alot with others as if youre bothering them AND the Food isnt fantastic ( dont believe me then go try it ). Overall youd be better off at any other Takeaway .
On my birthday I decided to have a dinner at Mai thai. It was around 9.30 so a few people on our table table had already eaten dinner and were ordering appetizers and drinks. This should have been fine but they rudely tried to make everybody on the table order a main to get more money from us. This was unacceptable as everyone was ordering something just some didnt want a main. They told us that they had turned other people away for our table even though there were plenty of available tables and tried to force people to order more. They then told us that we needed 4 more mains on the table so that we had 12. Everyone had ordered over 20minutes ago and they would need to re do everyones order as some people were sharing . We refused. They then told us that our whole table could only choose 4 things from the menu? What restaurant place tells you what you can and cannot order??? Just so it would be easier for them. No the end we kept the original order without the extra mains but one womens food didnt come, she asked about it twice, and it didnt come, everyone had finished there meal and were talking about leaving. So she went and found the manager and tried to cancel it. They refused. In the end she had to get the whole meal takeaway as she had no time to eat it. Very disappointed with the bullying management. Made my birthday dinner very stressful. Would never come here again.
First time here last night and defenitely coming back again. Very tasty food and staff are very friendly and making sure everything is ok. Special thanks to Ken and the waitress who serve us...
Great Thai BYO in the city! Food is authentic, staff are friendly, and the environment is comfortable. Expect a table or two of rowdy teens getting drunk on a weekend night.
Ive been here for more than 5 occasions and been always impressed with the quality of food. We mostly order Tom Yum Soup and either deep fried or steamed whole fish. Staff are helpful and cheerful. I wouldnt hesitate to recommended and bring friends to this place.
Had a stag do dinner there last night and was throughly impressed. Service and food was awesome and staff were very friendly and helpful. Looking forward to returning again.
Tried to over charge us for corkage!! Added 4 extra corkages onto the bill and then after we showed all of our receipts they still wouldnt let us leave and threatened to call the police! Lol
Do not go for lunch unless you have a couple of hours. Took ages paying the bill, as the waitress was arguing with a member of our party that she had more than she was paying for. It turned out she was confusing myself and this other lady. Even after I advised her of her mistake, no apology. How appalling.
Lunch table for 20 people. Had a lovely meal, food very nice indeed but petty squabbling over a couple of drinks that were wrongly written down spoiled the experience. It took ages to sort out & left me with the feeling like weve just been accused of trying not to pay.Disappointing aftertaste, wont rush back.
Have to 100% agree with everybody who says that this place has bad service, it really does! We were waiting ages to even get our order taken, waitresses/waiters were very sluggish at clearing away other tables plates etc and cleaning it up whilst the other waitresses/waiters pretty much stood around doing next to nothing. I have previously worked and studied hospitality and this is not how you treat your customers. Plus you are meant to tell a customer when there is a surcharge for a public holiday and ask if it is okay, when we brought it up with the counter lady, she said there was one when there was not one to be found [we double checked]. As for the food we had ordered sweet and sour tofu and the pineapple tasted extremely acidic, it felt like we had drank a whole bottle of vinegar as its after taste. Will definitely not be coming back. Grasshopper down the road is much, much better! Highly recommend Grasshopper and not this place.
Mixed minds about this. Great food but very slow to be seated and took a long time to get orders. WOuld try again but would have to make sure that I didnt have to be anywhere in a hurry after that!
Had booking at 8pm to celebrate moms 65th birth day. Was waiting for a table for 40 mins. Mentioned few times to the waiter that my mother was a diabetic and needed to eat on time as shes on insulin. Waiter kept saying that the table is ready and will be seated soon. At 8.45pm we left with no table. Place was packed. If they are so busy and unable to accommodate they should not accept any other bookings. They just want you to wait in the bar and keep paying for drinks. When I mentioned this to my friends, they also mentioned that they had to wait long time and food wasnt even good. NEVER AGAIN!!!
Having been to Thailand the food at Mai Thai definitely average for the price - $18-$23 mains anyone? My partner and I ordered the Pad Thai and Green curry which should be top notch in any good Thai restaurant worth its salt. However the Pad Thai was quite bland and the Green curry very average. We had a booking for a group of ten and were told upon arrival by the manager that it had been cancelled (apparently sometime an hour or two before we were due). So they begrudgingly told us to wait at the bar and eventually seated us in a back room after a good 20 minutes or so. No apologies, no freebies offered for their mistake. Wont be going back
