Madrasa Bou Inania - Historical landmark in Meknes, Morocco
very hard to find ( without a guideand it was closed (most likely for renovation since most monuments are undergoing construction/renovation until 2023). So if you want to visit meknes, i would suggest waiting a few years
Visiting the Madrasa Bou Inania was to me a complete immersion in the history of the imperial city of Meknes. The moment I step in this 700 years old edifice, I was amazed by its interct Moorish architecture and extreme attention to details. The Madrasa is simply a living testimony of the Moroccan craftsmanship and a work of art that has defied time.. I would recommend paying a visit to it..
While you visit this sweet spot .. you may dive inside the real History of Meknes and why not Morocco
beautiful interior (a little bit aged and cracks on tiles could be spotted), good rooftop view. There are small rooms on the top floor that you can overlook at the courtyard. there’s a room at the end of the corridor at the second floor that can look at the market.
Def worth visiting, is a bit pricey at 70 dirham but since we couldn’t get into the one in fes we went inside this one. It’s small but make sure to visit the old classrooms as well.
I’m giving it four stars because it’s pretty...€6 to get inNo info givenOld man with no teeth can only say “I don’t understand” in French... not much else. Felt frustrated at the lack of renovation, no information. It seems to be a thing here in Morocco. Rip non Moroccans off...
Atmospheric. One of the better sites
relax on the rooftop above the medina! 60dh entrance fee might be used to renovate this beautiful Place. Really chillling
Expensive for 5 minutes visit.60 dirhams/person
It is totally a waste of money. It is not well cared even though entrance fee is 60dh. If you have looked at the bou inania in Fes, it is really not needed to enter this one.Rooftop is disaster, you really cannot see anything at all.
Inside the Madrasa was beautiful. The small details in the wood and stone is stunning. The rooftop also provided an amazing view of Meknès. Tickets for adults are 60 Durham, free entry for Moroccans. Some of the walls in the classrooms and living quarters could use refurbishing. Overall, seeing Madrasa Bou Inania was a cool experience.
Its more than fine to pay 60 dh to see an historical place but it should be well mantained, with written information and you should get out with a renewed knowledge and this is not the case. You get inside, see the central garden (with indeed beautiful decorated wallsbut the fountain is not working and the entire building seems to fall down. No one explication, no one panel, not even the light to see what you should see. 5 minutes are more than enough for the entire tour and finally you have just learnt nothing at all. Shame to maintain a place like that in this conditions. If you want to feel robbed go and take a look yourself!
Nice place worth to visit.
Nothing to see inside really
It told a lot about the ancient ways and methods of education in Arabic medieval empire.
Its beautiful and peaceful
No entanto, vale a pena visitar.
A very very old school, has historical reputation. If you visit the city never miss the sight.
Advance warning to any potential visitors: this museum is in a bad state, there are absolutely zero explanations, and most of it is closed for renovation. They still charge you 60 dirhams to enter (about €6and they do not refund you if you tell them that you did not enjoy it and would like you money back. Instead, they stamp your ticket and send you to the ministry responsible for managing the museum. They obviously get a lot of complaints. The Marrakech Museum or the Madrasa in Fès are far better options at the moment (the Madrasa in Marrakech is also being renovated at this time). I’m giving it two stars because the engraved and Zellige tiled walls in the one room that’s open are nice, although falling off in many places. This place is a disappointment. I can see that some of the people below actually rated this after seeing the one in Fès which might mean that Google accidentally takes you here if you search for a Madrasa, which could be why the average rating is not like 2,5 instead of what it is now. :(We also tried a few other attractions in Meknès like the Mausoleum - which is also closed for renovation and the royal stables, which is very obviously not worth the 70 dirhams they are asking from you there. Overall, the only thing we liked so far in this city is our Riad, otherwise a grossly overrated city to visit.
It has only one proper room in an acceptable condition. The whole place seems really ruined especially from the terrace. 60Dh is way too much for this so-called museum. I suggest not to go here.
History still Alive
Really pretty madrasa but to be honest the entrance is quite expensive. 6 euros.
Super cool
The Design is so beautiful
One of the nice places during our holiday
Beautiful courtyard and an atmospheric terrace, however no explanations at all. Too expensive (60drh)
Beautiful and quiet visit. Lovely rooftop access and view. Its great to stop here to "rest" from the soul and medina around it.
Underrated like the most of mèknes places need more
Medersa is a school of Islamic studies. It is interesting to visit this medersa, that can be walked quietly. It has very beautiful decorations. It is open to visitors for non-Muslims and admission costs 10 dirhams (1 euro)
Beautiful place, it is a shame women cant get in
Stupidly closed for two years when we arrived. Ridiculous. One of the main sites of the town..... and its completely closed.... for two years. Comical. Probably to rob even more from the tourists.
Old Quoranic university, a must to visit
I was there for many times
This 14th-century university college has a fine, elegant decoration that covers every courtyard (ceiling, floor and walland combines three basic materials - cedar wood, stucco and mosaic. All this creates a harmonious whole. The first floor is surrounded by modest student cells. The roof overlooks the city.
The entrance fee is now 60dh, it is too expensive. The ones in Fes are 20dh and that is definitely reasonable.
It looks good
One of the Earliest Universities of the world.
Its a must see in Meknes! Amazing mosaics, decorative stucco, wooden cedar wood ceilings and fantastic view from the terrace. Its very well preserved and it gives you the feeling that it wasnt very long ago the last time that it was in use.It has 26 rooms cells each hosted two students so 52 in total. The students were confined in this room during all the revisions of the Holy Koraan with only water, bread and olives as a meal.
Lovely historical school with little dorms
Great place
One of the oldest schools in Morocco and Meknes, historical monument inside the old Medina of Meknes.
A delightful surprise. Not yet restored but in wonderful condition
Great historical site
Really pretty, not as nice as the one in fez. Use apple maps , roads more complete there. Walk near mosque then use google maps to pinpoint location . Advantage over fez is that you can walk upstairs.
Small but very nice, lovely view from the roof. We were the only people visiting at that moment and it was great. The narrow corridors will be hell if packed with tourists
Good places to visit
A must visit place in meknes. Its hide in the local market street and need some time to find but it is worthy.
