We really enjoyed our dinner at Machiya, the food was delicious especially the katsune skewer dipped in egg yolk. The beef udon were nice and chewy and the Mille crepe was super smooth and tasty. Our only let downs were just the agedashi tofu which was a bit bland, and the katsudon which we thought lacked the nice “saucy” texture of the omelet and dashi. But the service really made up for it, with a nice and cute personal happy birthday letter which was super cute!

The food is good here, but there was essentially no service. From the point we sat down we were essentially forgotten, no one came to take our order and it was quite hard to catch anyones attention to actually order. Once we did the food came quickly. Except for our dessert. It might have been good but it never came. When we finally caught someones attention, we decided we didnt want to wait any longer so we got the bill while we still had their attention.

Ordered an oyakodon that was cooked so much, the egg part was basically a frittata. Rice was also dry and hard in some places. The miso soup was an absolute disaster: a cup of lukewarm dashi-flavoured water with 2 pieces of wakame, a sprinkle of green onion and very small cubes of firm tofu instead of the classic silky one, all for the "reasonable" price of 3.50. My husband got a katsudon with also overcooked eggs and breading that was falling apart from the meat. I give 2 stars only because the servers were kind and the decor was ok.

Not much options on the food menu for selection but the appetisers are good. The soysauce cucumber can get a bit too salty, but is nice. The spinach with sesame is definitely a hit and the fried tofu is good.Id go for the unagi as it was well cooked. Environment wise is nice. Very quiet during weekdays and the food is quite authentic.Dont forget to try the mille crepe matcha cake. Its thick and creamy. The only thing I didnt like was the Asian waitress had quite the attitude. Was not knowledgeable in Japanese food to be able to answer my questions and acted cocky when answering wrongly. Was also a bully towards my European friends when she kept pushing them to tell them what kind of green tea they wanted when they didnt know the difference between the three oh and I was hushed by her when I tried to explain what the difference was to them. It wasnt rush hour either since we were the only ones dining there at the time.Rude and unpleasant despite the food being good. The environment is amazing though. The top floor is neat and tidy it feels cosy and the bar is a great place to dine at as it has hooks. Downstairs is a bar, not sure if it has opened up but definitely quite well done.

Honestly? Quite disappointing. I ordered the gyudon and can say that even my homemade version is better. The beef wasn’t tender (they chose a cut that has no fat in it at alland the sauce has no depth of flavour. Also had the fried tofu as a starter and it was just meh. Definitely not worth the price and would not go again.

Had great expectations but disappointed in the end. Gyudon the beef is dry and not authentic, some pieces were stuck together and not properly cooked the way it should be. Miso soup is okay and had mushrooms in it which is a nice touch, but 3.5 for a miso soup is overpriced. My dinner was totalled around £18.xx

One of my new favourite restaurants. Very authentic. I’ve been wanting to introduce Japanese food to my friends for a while and this really was the perfect place. They don’t serve sushi, more so comfort food that I was used to eating at home in Japan. This is what made it so much more nicer, though.Upon arriving were greeted by a young waitress with short hair who was very welcoming and accommodating throughout our meal. She gave my friends a few recommendations which they all loved.A very generous amount of meat came with the Tonkatsu curry. The tonkatsu itself was crispy and seasoned enough to match the hot curry. As well as this, we ordered the tsukune and shake teriyaki which was even better than the curry. The salmon was seared nicely and the flavours of the teriyaki sauce were great. The tsukune with the sauce that came with it also tasted very good (even though it was very filling for a small plate).I will definitely be back and will be bringing more people here much more often.

We went there yesterday for dinner and were totally amazed! The atmosphere of this place is absolute authentic.Weve had the Misoshiru and Chicken Katsu Curry and both was simply perfect. As a special we also had the Wagyu Beef for the first time ever and we were amazed! The homemade ginger soda was also very delicious and I will try to make it at home. The team was so friendly and always smiling. It was our last evening in London and also something like a special day for us and we couldnt had a better dinner. We will definetly visit again when were the next time in London.A big thank you to the whole team!

I rated it 5 stars before pandemic but now lowered it to 3. They must have changed their chef and the menu has less choices now.I used to come here for all the amazing matcha desserts but now the cake is watery and a bit too sweet.

Machiya is a small Japanese restaurant with a friendly bunch of staffs. The food was average to good - the images include Oyakon (Chicken and Egg with Riceand a Pork Katsu Curry. The portion is slightly smaller than other places and to others may not be as filling. However, the pork curry was delicious, curry was a light, tasty dish. Oyakon was average, was not anything special than just egg and chicken on top of rice. Could include more as this dish was £13.The interior and sesting below were beautiful; an outstanding space for such a small area. There could be more use for downstairs seating as it was a little darker and felt quite peaceful and romantic if seated here!My favourite part was the Matcha Crepe Cake - which secured the 4 stars along with the service. As someone who is not a fan of matcha flavours - this cake helped changed my opinion! What a cute panda design on the cake! You are able to view the menu and pay from the QR code in front of you. Free WiFi as well! Given right in front of your table.

Brill place! Fair prices for london and all the matcha items are good. Love the udon and salmon too. Come for lunch for the matcha desserts! They’re usually sold out by dinner.Edit: used to love this place (above). But as some other reviewers have commented the standard has dropped since Covid, especially for the mains. The beef udon recipe has changed, so has the salmon (now done teriyaki with lots of sauce). Oyakodon and beef udon no longer have the earthy dashi taste. Desserts are still good and staff are lovely. But the mains no longer have the nuance they used to, and taste catered to people who’d enjoy lots of sauce/ one dimensional flavours over delicate Japanese seasoning.

We went there after seeing the reviews and pictures of the food, but were utterly disappointed with what we got. The food looked and tasted basic/bland. While eating the food, all I thought was that I couldve made a better dish myself at home and didnt even finish the dish. Although the "Matcha Crepe" was delicious which is why its not a 1 star.

I was really craving for Japanese food and found this spot near the theater on my way back to the hotel. I ordered bunch of thing but half of it was decent but another half was pretty bad. Especially the quality of rice was very bad. Gyudon was also very dry too. Tho eggplant and tsukune was good so if u go there, I recommend to order just small dishes and no main dish.

A small place with a small menu and they do it well. The fried chicken is crispy. The unajuu (eel on riceis full of flavour albeit it’s slightly pricey at £20. The beef udon in a light broth tastes delicious and refreshing. Last but not least, both matcha deserts are amazing!

Tsukune was great! Moist chicken.Katsu was alright. It felt soggy and not as crispy as I might have wanted. Overall, slow service where my friends udon arrived more than 30 mins before mine. Overall, ok food not wow. I love japanese food. Still hunting for great japanese food in London.

Love the food this was the 6th time I’ve been here and it’s still lovely as always. I came here with my newborn baby and a friend, the staff were accommodating and friendly. The food was superb, I ordered katsu chicken with rice and my friend had the unagi which she said was yummy! I would definitely recommend to book this place before coming in as it gets very busy early especially lunch time.

Loved this place. Managed to snag the last table - you really need to book - and we were glad to have done so, it’s really popular and the place is very small. The back has izakaya-style bench dining and then there are about 8 tables of two in the main area.We had the chicken katsudon, gyudon, salmon teriyaki and agedashi tofu. The quality was great and it’s not too expensive for Japanese food. You do get a good amount, so it’s pretty good value for money. The only drawback is that since it’s so popular there’s a constant stream of people asking for tables and standing around waiting. Great problem to have as a restaurant but a bit disruptive for diners.

I came here mainly for their green tea desserts. For the main dishes I wanted they didn’t have available, so I resort to ordering something I didn’t really want and I didn’t enjoy it much since it wasn’t my first choice or second choice.Lucky the green tea desserts saved the day and the sweet service.🍵

The best matcha cake I ever had… I came there looking for a Japanese bakery that is in the basement of this restaurant but the bakery was closed. However, the nice lady told me they also have matcha cake but they are closing now as well so I could only have it as a take away. I was dreaming all days of having a nice matcha cake and a sip of espresso inside a nice cosy place so I declined the offer and the lady then showed me where else I could go and find the cake… I went there but they didn’t have it… so I ran back to this restaurant minutes before closing for the afternoon break and I took the matcha cake to go.. i took it and went to a nearby cafe Nero, ordered the cappuccino and sat down and wow.. the cake was so delicious, so tender, soft, moisture, the full matcha taste… wonderful! Thanks for the nice lady and her help!

Table was booked for 18:00 and we were running a little behind schedule. They were very accommodating by allowing us to shift the booking to 18:30.The service was great. The food.. incredible.I had the teriyaki salmon. I am not even exaggerating, it was the best salmon Ive ever had.The portions were a little small for me, but thats not a negative thing at all.Definitely a must visit! 10/10

Decent restaurant serving Japanese, mostly hot food, cuisine.Went in a quiet afternoon, there were just 8 customers in addition to myself.Ordered Tonkatsu. I had to ask for sauce as it’s not by default come on the side. Maybe they used to make the pork more tender and so sauce won’t be required.Rice was quite undercooked so taste a bit rocky.Overall average but a bit disappointed. Staffs are friendly and helpful tho.

Tried the savory and the portion is just way to small. We went for the dessert another time and ended up being told that takeaway is not available. In the second time, we went again and now Machiya only does 2 Macha desserts. All of them are way to sweet. The cake also taste like it was put in the fridge for a while. 2 stars for the service and the nice platting of the food. Never coming again though.

The food was authentic but it’s not as good as expected. All items we ordered seem to be lacking of salt/ taste. The beef on Gyudon was dry, however, the egg was very rich in flavour. Agedashi tofu severed with too much soup/ sauce (soaking the tofu which came soggyand the sauce also lacked of taste. The decor of the restaurant was simple and nicely decorated. The waiter was very patient and well mannered.

What a fantastic experience. The food was phenomenal and extremely fresh. We had the beef niku udon, grilled eel and chicken kara-age. The udon was delicate but with a deep rich flavour. The eel perfectly cooked and marinated in a lovely sauce to go with the rice. The kara-age was light and extremely fresh, served with a refreshing tangy sauce. The service could also not be faulted. The waiter was polite, extremely helpful and very considerate. The food came in a timely manner. To top things off, we were given complementary Nama chocolate (very soft truffle-like bites). They were freshly made that day and extremely delicate.Overall, this is the best Japanese restaurant Ive tried in the area and one of the best Ive ever tried. I definitely recommend this place and will be visiting it again. Good job Machiya! 👌

The food is good and so is the dessert. Both were first time for me. I give it 3 stars due to miscommunication between staff that ended up having other people gettinf our seat, and us having to wait for 30 min longer. The seating can be uncomfortable to some as it has no back support. Other then that we had a sake too. Overall, the cost for two people eating this and sake was 80 pounds so fairly expensive considering its just rice and a bit of eel on top. And we all know cooking and rice isnt exactly expensive.

Very nice atmosphere and very warm welcome. Be prepared to queue outside during peak times such as weekends as this is a small venue which makes the settings very intimate.Starters: The pickled cucumbers were vary flavoursome, the white radish were perfection. We then had Miso soup and agedashi tofu which had an amazing texture (soft and melty on the inside, and slightly caramelised on the outside).Mains: The teriaky glazed salmon and the grilled eel with steamed rice were mouthwatering and my personal favourite dishes. We then had aubergine dengaku which a sweet and buttery texture due the walnut grating on top. Lastly, we had the vegetable curry which wasnt spicy but very aromatic yet well balanced. As my friend eats meat and l dont, he also opted for the slow cooked pork belly (which he described as melting in his mouth), but also the teppan beef striploin which very well seasoned and served silizzling on a hot iron plate. Finally he had the gyudon with an onsen egg & pickled ginger layered on steamed rice.Desserts: DIVINE is the only word to describe the matcha mille crepe and the white chocolate fondant mixed with matcha*.*Matcha: finely ground powder of green tea leavesOverall experience: LOVED it, will definitely go there again. Highly recommend if you want to discover traditional Japanese homely dishes.

A queue before the restaurant always inducates good quality food. Though my dish looked quite modest the more contrasting were the taste. Perfectly steamed rice comboned with other ingredients made my day. A helpful waitress adviced pouring tea into the bowl, tea invluded into the dish, which made taste even more unique. Matcha icecream incredible. Highely recommend.

Simple and authentic, a great tasting meal at a pretty reasonable price. All dishes tasted great and theres a good selection on the menu. The restaurant itself is cosy and there was a little wait for a table but its worth it. Service was great and all staff were friendly. There is even a cool bar downstairs with very nice seating and moody lighting. My only gripe was that the food arrived at slightly different times, but that wasnt really an issue.Overall definitely a recommended visit if youre in the area and fancy a little more than the Japan Centre.

This hidden gem of a restaurant has quickly become a firm favourite. Amidst the many other Japanese options in the area, with seemingly similar offerings, this one stood out. It can be best described as sophisticated comfort food. Hearty, but packed full of flavour. And contrary to other reviews, we found the portions to be more than sufficient- you’re definitely getting beyond what you are paying for.On the two occasions we’ve been we’ve tried:Machiya hot wings: perfectly seasoned, very satisfyingly crunchy, but admittedly a slight bit too on the hot side for our taste.Chicken yakitori: this starter was the star of the show- it’s difficult to improve on a dish so standard in the cuisine, but Machiya dazzles. A perfect balance of sweet and salty, juicy and tender; a must try.Chicken katsu: mixed thoughts on this- the meat and its crispy coating were very solid, but the sauce was far too thin and lacked the homely feel of the dish. Ultimately there are better options available.Katsudon: the positives of the above, without the lacklustre sauce. Definitely would recommend.Oyakodon: very generous portion, well seasoned chicken, fragrant rice- what else could you want?Abura soba: this is an unexpected item on the menu that is truly enjoyable to eat. The noodles are surprisingly flavoursome, the pork belly is just divine (complaint would definitely be not having enough though!and the egg yolk adds a creamy texture that ties the entire dish together.Matcha ice cream: unlike other places, they don’t skimp on the matcha. Strong, authentic flavour, but the bitterness still manages to not be overwhelming.Matcha fondant: ending on a high, this has been the best dessert we’ve ever had- no exaggeration needed. The matcha and chocolate create a heavenly blend that is further exhilarated by the warm, gooey inside. It’s small, and admittedly overpriced, but just so good. And we hope to go back for many more.

Nice Japanese Restaurant and very popular. Lots of people were coming here including us with Groupon vouchers and they had a specific limited menu for this. The main menu has these options plus more. The beef stew was ok but just like any other stew, there was nothing outstanding about it but nothing bad either. The chicken dish as shown in the picture was ok too but again nothing particularly special. Staff were friendly though, good service and short wait for food. Some of the Groupon menu choices you had to pay extra for rice which wasnt included.

A bit of a wait to get in but once you do you’re treated to amazing food. Staff appear when necessary but are otherwise out of sight, which is good in this busy place. The spicy wings are notably spicy and great value to share, even the half kilo. The special squid rings were delicious. The katsudon rice bowl was a good amount of food - the dish overall was decent but the tonkatsu tasted too chewy for me. Overall great find in London though.

Machiya is definitely the best homecooked Japanese restaurant Ive been to in London. The soba and the chicken wings were both very very tasty. The matcha mille crepe was also perfectly creamy, rich, and decadent.I was a little bit disappointed in the tonkotsu though. The pick seemed a bit dry, had two pieces that were just made up of fat, and the katsu part kept separating from the meat — those are all the parts you need to get right to make a proper pork katsu. As a staple in Japanese home cooked cuisine, Machiya has some work to do on their katsu!

Pretty presentation but the meat was generally too salty. Two of us had a hair and piece of egg shell in their plates so complained about it. Got both of them replaced afresh but it took a quarter minutes that by the time the replacements arrived, our appetite was already gone. Bar downstairs seems very nice with jazz music playing in the background and Id recommend for those who want to have private conversations. This place has a nice selection of sake and Japanese drinks.

Visited here today for the soft opening, I like the space, its a quite small space but it works well and has seating for 25-30 or so upstairs with a cosy little cocktail bar downstairs.Staff were really polite, service was good. Between two of us we ordered a really good spread across the menu and everything was really nicely prepared and presented, I definitely really enjoyed the food.Ill definitely be back, Id also like to come a little later and spend more time downstairs.Overall, Id definitely recommend, its from the same people as Kanada-Ya and the authentic quality is still there. There will be queues outside here most days, just like there is at St Giles High Street.
