Guided walking & scooter tours are popular at this large World War II–era network of caves.
Next to the caves there is a small cafe/restaurant with great views and accessible either by car (parking next to the cafeor on foot following the path from saint Pieter fortress. Cool idea for families and long walk for dogs.
Just a wonderful experience. Very interesting
I visited sone years ago and it was great to come back. The tour is interesting! Bring a coat and a flashlight! I recommend combining the visit in the cave with a boat trip from Maastricht.
The tour was really an experience. When the guide switched off all lights when we were in there to show how dark it could get in there - was stunning! Also - the height of the caves and how cold it can get inside - is something you have to see to believe! Must visit!
This tour was Amaziiiing! And that was all thanks to our tour guide, Regina. She made the tour super interesting and fun! It was fascinating to get to know all these stories and history of the place and the whole experience absolutely exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended!
Thank you Ruud for the captivating tour full of historical insights and fun facts. Its definitely a must see for any visitor that is looking for a new experience ☺️
A nice adventure .. when you take the cruise trip from the centrum the ticket can include the cave tour as well which is about 1 hour .. nice guides .. a piece of history .. be prepared for a short upward trek (around 5-10 minsto get to the starting point. The series of tunnels/caves are really big and have a high ceiling so not claustrophobic and wont get you dusty. Air quality is also decent inside.
This a unique experience and a must do in Maastricht. These caves are built to extract limestone in old ages. The tunnels extend for a vast area in the hill. The guide was very informative about the history about the place. We booked the English language tour. There were 16 people for the tour. Tour takes just over an hour and was very interesting. Ticket was 9.50 per person and was well worth it.
Very amazing experience. Loved the history behind the caves. I was super impressed to know the complexity behind the formation of caves.I will highly recommend to visit this place if you are around.
Pretty impressive. The marking on the wall closest to the roof were from the miners dating back to around 1560. It was stated that the black spots on the roof were from the oil lights back in the 1500s. Will recommend the trip to other people!
Very nice and informative tour. Very good for families, especially for rainy day! The guide was very clear and easy to follow
When I visited the caves, and I I saw the galleries, its hard to believe that everything was made by human hand, fantastic galleries with even more fantastic paintings.
Well worth a visit with a good story throughout the guided tour.
A fantastisk tour through the caves.Cold and dask but verry enlighting......Worth visiting
The guided tour was very cool, lots of interesting facts. Would recommend
Amazing experience. Very interesting, lots of history, wonderful guide (thanks Martha). Should definitely give it a visit, if not only for the view possible from the restaurant.
If you are in Maastricht, why not go and see some historical places. Is not great but is really nice, the staff is quite friendly and is amazing to see how the caves came to be what they are today.
A wonderful place to visit! Age old "caves"...Mines actually....... silence and darkness....... with a knowing guide, a great experience!
Great cave to visit! We did the museum (or art?tour and it was a great to with a very good guide who told a lot of things about the art in the mine and some other things as well (general stories). And although the tour took about 2 hours, it felt shorter.
Very interesting place to visit. Good guides that give a lot of information about the limestone exploitation and history of the galleries. They are not actual caves. More like mines.
I love visiting these caves. We even saw a bat the last time we were there. And the restaurant is good as well. And dogs are allowed to join the tour.
I really like this tour because they give a lot of information about the history of these caves. They can answer all your questions, so they are really well informed. Its not a cave made by nature but the stories, arts and guides are great.
Super good, nice tour guide! Booking the tour before is very important.
Good for one time visit. Tickets are comparatively cheap. Nothing much to see inside the caves as its not natural butan made due to excavation of lime stone
It was a great spot to learn more about WWII history. The guide was very funny as mentioned by other reviews. I was a bit surprised that our 4 year old had to pay.
Great Tour, Funny Guide, really good time! Very little money very well spent, would always recommend!
We didn’t expect at all the beauty of this place and the surrounding area. The coffee place at the top has an amazing view overlooking the Maas river and the underground tour was amazing. Our guide was very attentive, knowledgeable and funny and really kind to our kids. Definitely a kids friendly place with a lot of history and unique atmosphere!
Extremely impressive and great explanations from the guide. Highly recommend it. Would advise on bringing warm clothes as it is pretty cold and very humid.
Beautiful hill with restaurant, views, caves.
I liked it a lot. Buy your tickets online, and wear a jacket, the temperature will be +11 C.
Picturesque place nevertheless it is industrial zone and access is limited at least if you follow the laws. Amazing colour water as well as you can see how exactly man made actions changes landscapes.
Amazing tunnel system that has been created over 700 years.
Interesting but did not live up to my expectations Very little signs left of the use of these "tunnels" as a bomb shelter during WWII. Some of the " graffiti" was interesting.esp. Nepolian and Fröeble.
This is a great place to explore. Specifically if you have interest in history and want to know more about that. Learnt a lot on how these caves were built. You get a parking right there but make sure to pay for the parking. We didnt know it was paid parking and ended up getting a fine.
There is some wonderful history to explore in this area. The cave tour was great, and they offer it in a few languages. Tour guide Ruud (English speaking tourwas very informative and open to questions. I would highly recommend this very economical tour if you are in the area.
Fascinating place, with amazing history and stories, told by a very enthusiastic tour guide. Felt a bit rushed as we started late and had to be on time to catch the last ferry ride back. Lovely views from the top of the hill.
A must see when in Maastricht. With a guide you go into the caves. All is dark in the caves and your group gets some lights to see. From time to time they make you put out the lights so you can see how dark it is, believe me you see nothing. Its quite interesting to hear what all happened in these caves and who lived here, not going to tell everything, just go and visit.
Huge network of man made caves. Very interesting place to visit and know the history of it.
Impressive. Unique history. Combine with a boat tour
Its pretty freeze down there, remember to grab a coat!
Really good experience to have and really nice place also to take a walk around or in bike if sunny time.
Its a very nice stop for those who like these historical places. The guide we got was great, kept people interested the entire time. Too bad the tour was in Dutch only.
It is interesting to see man made tunnel system in this size. The initial problem is that it is advertised as cave and we were expecting something made by nature.
A treasure. Great history. Very interesting .
The caves are absolutely amazing. People have been working for 700 years to dig the massive tunnels. To my own surprise you find some stunning wall paintings inside the tunnels as well. If youre around, make sure to book a tour! You wont regret it.
I liked this tour a lot more than I thought. Its about the perfect length of time and the guides know all kinds of stuff. There are English tours given on the weekends.Be aware that the actual start is a good few minutes walk (5 minutesabove ground for dress purposes. It stays relatively cool inside the caves so in the summer you may want to bring a sweatshirt if you get cold. Our guide chose various points throughout the vast system to kind of give you a feel for what you csn find down there, how people used it throughout the years, and some of the local legends. On your way out, stop andbhave a cave beer "grottobier" that was lagered in the cave network, just over the boarder on the Belgian side.
Its just beautiful place and shows in a great way how time passed on.
The Tour was great. You get to see a lot and very clear speeches. They also give you time to make photos. They told us they do different routes everytime, I think thats nice for them and for us if we want to go in again. Dont forget to dress right: 9-10 degrees Celsius inside;)
We went here on a rainy day. Last minute decision while buying our tickets for the boat tour. This was an amazing tour trough the caves.A very knowing and joyful guide made it an amazing hour. Went deep down into the caves and did a "walking in the pitch dark" experiment. Which is not always in the tour. Would go back if we could!
I really wish I could rank this place 6 stars! We stopped by here as part of our boat tour, and didnt expect much. After a short walk from the boat, to the entrance of the caves we were already impressed. The enthusiasm from the guide was fantastic. We were very impressed with the tour and the caves! I wish we had more time.
