MUSEUM OF THE ATLANTIC - Art museum in Baranoa, Colombia
I have no interest in ships before visiting this museum. But this place do make me wanna know more. Especially those exquisite ship models impressed me a lot
It would take several days to really explore every exhibit and we were there for only about 1.5 hours so this definitely a limited, general impressions overview. The good: there is a vast collection of high quality ship models grouped by general type (ex. sailing, steamer, Canadian navy). It is a pleasure looking at these. And there are a few other nice collections of maritime related materials. The not so good: I feel there is a shortage of explanatory text to help one understand or appreciate what you are seeing. The exhibit room on the great Halifax explosion has a lot of interesting material but is poorly organized. From either entrance you start seeing exhibits on different aspects of the effects and response to a great explosion but you need to go to the exhibit in the middle of the room to learn about the explosion itself - and there is nothing that directs you to that exhibit as a starting point for exploring the room.Overall, how much you enjoy this museum will range from my three stars up to five stars depending on what you are expecting to see and/or learn during your visit.
Very cool museum. Lots of incredible model ships...some huge. They have a section dedicated to the Halifax harbor explosion in 1917 and another section dedicated to Titanic. Lots of history...and many different real life boats on display.
I loved visiting the Maritime Museum. I had no idea about the role Halifax played in the Titanic’s history, or anything about the explosion before visiting. I learned so much and really enjoyed the exhibits about both. I also loved the Sable Island exhibit and story. So fascinating! The museum was well laid out, not overwhelmingly big, and had lovely views of the waterfront.
Great value. Lots of interesting displays and boats. Interesting sections on the explosion and titanic. Can go in and out all day with admission
Visited while in Port, about 15 minute walk down the waterfront from pier 21. Very interesting collection and historical artifacts spanning several centuries. Very good overview of the Maritimes and connections to Halifax. The Titannic artifacts are a sobering connection to the souls buried nearby in the cemetery.
Informative areas about the Titanic and the Halifax explosion. Lots of models of boats. I enjoyed all the figureheads from the ships. Beautiful area along the harbor. You can even walk aboard a ship.
Great museum all about the Atlantic Ocean, covering everything from maritime wildlife to naval battles. We learned a lot and had a great time.
Love this museum! It is really great because you can learn more about the history of Halifax.I recommend to attend the guided tour about the Titanic, the guide is excellent and you learn a lot of interesting facts. Also, the story about the explosion is very interesting, there is a tour about that too.For the tours, just listen when they speak over the loudspeakers or ask at the ticket office when you arrive.
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is a great museum to visit. Beautiful exhibits and ship modals. I love the Titanic part but the story makes us sad. Those items got from the shipwrecks are really amazing ! A very informative and educational museum.
The museum is alright. Many of the displays are small and obviously static in nature. Some exhibits are interesting but overall a little on tne boring side. I was a little disappointed but the price was reasonable.
Loved the museum!Lots of interesting stuff for kids and adults. The only disappointment was that we could visit the CSS Acadia.Apparently, it is open only on Tuesdays, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm and Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 to 4:30 pm. 🤷♀️If you have a chance, jump on a group tour about the Titanic. Our guide was incredible! The most entertaining guided tour we ever had.Outside is a good kids playground.
Excellent museum and I especially enjoyed the contents of the Halifax Explosion where many personal stories are shared. The Titanic exhibition showcases some impressive artifacts from the ship itself when pieces of the ship were collected in 1912. Must visit when in town.
Again, a very interesting museum. Has 2 floors and has many items from different ships. You can take your time going thru.
A very thoughtful, informative museum. A must stop if youre interested in the Titanic, or the Halifax Explosion - there are many compelling artifacts for both. If your interest is model ships, you might get lucky and catch one of their model builders working on an elaborate ocean vessel (one model took 4,000 hours to make!). Youre missing out on a crucial aspect of Halifax if you dont visit the Maritime Museum.
Very interesting place. We went during a pretty busy time so it was crowded in certain areas but it was still fun. The parrot that was there was so cute. The layout was nice, when one area was too busy there was quick access to another spot so time wasnt wasted in one spot. I would like to visit again and possibly have a guided tour, so I can get more info about the topics, if they are available.
Really great museum. Something for everyone. Will visit again if I make it back to Halifax. All the exhibitions were interesting and well presented, from the Titanic, to the Terror and Erebus, to the demonstration of Morse code. Our 5 & 6 year old kids had a great time too. Sadly the Arcadia wasnt open, might be worth checking opening times for that before you plan your trip.
I am no museum expert. I had meh expectations going in to this place. But I was very much delighted by this place. So much rich history all explain and very nicely laid out. From the Halifax explosion to shipwrecks to the titanic. Very well done and enjoyable. Never thought being educational would be a huge positive but this place just kept you want more. Spent easily a couple hours here. A very large collection of very intricate models are all around. Fascinating to think of all the work out into those. Absolutely worth the money.Great place for adults and kids. Nice gift shop inside as well. I bought a shirt. No review on the shirt yet.
This Museum displays a clear history of Halifax. Second floor has a lot of boat model. Strongly recommend to visit once if you are new to Halifax
Amazing exhibits anyone who enjoys history definitely needs to put this museum on the must see while in Halifax!
A wonderful visit to this old ship that saw service in WWII. The staff was impressively knowledgeable and excited to share stories about the ship. Fun to do this with the kids...and it is free.
Nice museum, really enjoyed the halifax explosion section! Had a lot of cool facts and items from the event
Really neat museum! So much to see and learn about! Definitely must visit!
A fabulous adventure right on the Halifax waterfront. Travel back in time to experience life before steam. Experience life during the steam age as well. Items from the Cunard line on display and a tour of the Acadia! Well worth the admission price. I spent an entire day there. I was only planning on a couple of hours. Its a real treat.
Well worth the visit. Great displays on Titanic and Halufax explosion
I never knew sunken ship history could be so fascinating. I loved it! Of course the Titanic section was great too. Loved the model ships....they were amazing! The Halifax Explosion exhibit is engrossing and made me cry. Very well done.
Gerry was the coolest to meet, he really knows his stuff. The museum is beautiful and the ship section with the creaky wood floors is my absolute favourite. The smell is amazing. Would love to see more scents incorporated into the museum to really bring that feel alive. 😊
This place is a lot bigger than I expected. We looked around it for about an hour and a half and had to call it a day because of time constraints.Theres multiple fascinating exhibits here including maritime history, the age of sale, the age of steam, the Titanic, and the halifax explosion. Theres also a truly brilliant section on mikmaq culture and how this has been neglected and obstructed by colonising people that was incredibly eye opening.
Visited this museum whilst in Halifax, it is situated on stop 3 of the Hop on / hop off bus loop around the city. It costs about $10CD to enter. The museum is over two floors and has an outside wharf where you can walk around various ships and artefacts on the wharfside. Halifax maritime history is displayed on the ground floor with a large section about the devastating 1912 explosion. Upstairs there is a huge display of Cunard model ships and items recovered from the Titanic sinking. There is a small gift shop and toilets on the ground floor but no cafe.Extremely interesting museum, give yourselves at least 90mins to two hours here.
Great place to sum up history of the Maritime provinces, challenges in their exploration and how we got where we are today. We had a free guide that spoke about seemingly boring subject of medicine in sea and he was amazing. We learned so much. Titanic exhibit was the peak. My son kept of asking questions on the event. Strongly recommended. Enjoy!
Reasonably fee to enter about $10 CAD. Excellent displays and use of space. Exhibition go from native inhabitants to Titanic to Halifax explosion to WW2. Lots of model and small ships. Nice harbor viewing deck to enjoy Port of Halifax. Well stocked gift shop. Went to see the Titanic exhibits and was not disappointed. Seeing the Titanic Wreckwood was a surprise element I didnt know was a thing. They have a reproduction Titanic deck chair you can sit in.
I enjoyed learning about the history of the area as it relates to the sea. There are pictures and artifacts from the many shipwrecks over the years. Theres a whole section about the Halifax explosion in 1917, and another section about the Titanic and its connection to Halifax. It was educational and really well done. It took at least two hours to get through it and I probably could have spent more time. Theres also a great gift shop at the end. We had a great morning here!
Very informative and entertaining for both adults and children. Location is great: you can visit Maritime Museum, boardwalk and Pier 21 Immigration Museum in 1 day (if youre limited with time like we were). Add to that many events that take place on this stretch plus cute little shops and restaurants, and enjoy your time in Halifax.
what a wonderful place excellent to visit and see the history of the area. Great exhibits of the Halifax explosion and about the Titanic. Staff were very helpful.
I really liked the museum. The gift shop was surprisingly very reasonable. I bought a fleeced lined jacket for 35.00. I cant do that at Walmart. The parrot was a lot of fun playing peek a boo. Merlin is a great ambassador.
Great place to visit if youre interested to know about the history of Halifaxs shipyard and harbours. They have most of the ship miniatures of all time. Also the famous Titanic and SS Atlantics recovered artifacts. Curbside Parking is available. Free entrance on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 9pm.
I highly recommend this museum for a bit of history about the area. Particularly the explosion that flattened the entire dock in the early 1900s. This was by far the most interesting part of the museum! There are also some artifacts from the Titanic. I will say that that was a bit less impressive than the explosion portion. It was really built up as a fine collection of Titanic artifacts, but there were not very many and what there was tended to be not terribly exciting (like a cabinet and a deck chair). There are guided tours of the Titanic section only that you can join. We were there at the time that a tour was being given and it was very crowded in that section. We could hear what the woman was saying and it was not really more informative than reading the signs. So I would avoid that if you want a more leisurely way to view the artifacts.
This place was such a cool find!! I need to start by saying the people who work here were fantastic, greeted you with a smile and so friendly!! I was excited to come and see the Titanic exhibit and didnt really know what else to expect from the experience. I ended up loving the entire museum start to finish. They have a few great spots in there for some fun photo ops and a little observation deck up top overlooking the gorgeous waterfront. Tickets were priced right and we even got to wish Merlin the parrot a happy birthday! Check it out if you are in the area.
Very good museum to see history and models of ships and mechanics involved
Easy way to get lost in Maritime history for a few hours. We loved the room full of older sail boats. I did find it a bit difficult to find some of the more popular exhibits. Could use a bit better signage (floor or overhead).
Super interesting museum. Get to learn About the Halifax explosion, and see artifacts from the Titanic. Neat place. They also have a beautiful Macau that might be suffering from anxiety.Entrance is free in Tuesday’s after 5pm.
I love this museum, it has so many model ships/canoes/boats to see and admire. I like that it also shows the Miꞌkmaq people and their ways of life, traditions, etc.
This museum was pretty good. Interesting stuff on the Titanic and Halifax disaster. On the second floor, there was a small theatre that played those Canadian Heritage commercials (on loopfrom like twenty years ago. Such a walk down memory lane from my childhood.
Really great museum. The employees are full of knowledge for all your questions, especially Titanic and the harbour explosion. They have a blue macaw named Merlin and he is a ginormous sweetheart. He likes to nap in the afternoon, but he will chat with you if you approach him right. Sorry to spend so much time on the parrot, he was such a darling so no ragerts.
A lot of good historic information. You must go here if you come to visit Halifax, even if is just 1 or 2 days. Good for children and adults.
Loved the time spent here. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Good size and can easily spend over an hour. Good place to go as a family or solo. Price is very cheap.
For $5 this was a total gem. So much history and a whole section on the titanic and the Halifax explosion. If you have an interest in boats there are lots of full size and models. The Titanic exhibit has quite a few items salvaged while recovering bodies. Very sad . Also recommend going to Fairview park cemetery where the recovered bodies were buried.
Nice museum! We found the first floor a bit boring (except for the story of the St Louis which was new to us).. the top floor is more interesting with the Titanic and those incredible models!
You must visit this place!!! The entire museum is worth the visit but the Titanic exhibition is precious!!!Pictures of the rooms and their menus!! Everything is so interesting.
Visit to this museum was absolutely worth considering the fact that it provides a lot of first hand information about Titanic. I’m not a big fan of museums, but this one was an exception. I had an amazing time learning so many things about Titanic and other Atlantic related facts.
