Beim Strohhause 26, 20097 Hamburg, Germany, Norderstedt
Across the street from a train and U-Bahn station, this functional hostel is 3 km from both the landmark concert venue Elbphilharmonie, and the railway exhibits at Miniatur Wunderland.Simple dorms and private rooms have hardwood floors. All feature free Wi-Fi and shared bathrooms; some include bunk beds and/or sitting areas.Amenities include a kitchen, plus a cozy TV lounge with a dining area. Parking and lockers are available.
This was so terribly bad that we were laughing about it with my partner. Everything had a "cheap vibe".The rooms are packed with walls so thin we could understand the conversations of the travelers next door as if we were among them. The entrance of the building following Google maps is in a parking lot, and the view from our window gave on this parking is "improved" by ugly buildings and construction works. We paid more than 100€ for two single sized beds within a small room, no bathroom. Common toilets and showers without towels - we found ourselves lucky to find toilet paper given the rest! There would be more to say but Ill spare you and hope youll find it convincing enough to pay maybe a few extra euros to get yourself something decent and avoid these robbers.
I cannot say it loudly enough - this hostel has a weird vibe. Like not in a threatening or dangerous kinda way, like its just odd. Its clean enough, the folks that run it are friendly, the rooms, though small, are all OK.Its just weird. In a way I couldnt put my finger on.Not the best review possible but there it is.The price is probably the best around though, so there you go.
The location is quite good, close to a metro station and close to the central station. I shared a room with my husband and children. The room was big enough and clean, comfortable beds. Unfortunately the kitchen was not very clean. We were there during a heat wave and garbage was kept way too long in the kitchen. I dont recommend visiting with children. Also: before you go: check if the construction of a new railway bridge in the back is still going on. We were unable to open the window at night because the work continued all night and the noise and bright lights disturbed our rest. Sleeping with windows closed is never comfortable if you ask me, but during a heat wave its simply unbearable.
The staff was very friendly, and place was clean and quite central. Would stay there again if I go to hamburg.
Very nice
Good basic hostel provision. Staff were v helpful and friendly. Beds comfy. The only thing was the noise of the street at night. We had to keep our windows open due to the heat. Traffic, regular emergency service sirens and people yahooing and talking in the street below until 330 am. Get a back room if you can.
Shared bathroom and toilets was a let down but everything else was ok. Does not match the advertising pictures.
Cheap and comfortable. The wifi is not that great but for students looking for a place to crash for a while to take a tour of Hamburg, it is in a perfect location close to S-Bahn.
Great place. Had a great sleep. Definitely recommended!
The room/dorm was smelling really bad the hole time. And there was no cleaning of the room.
I stayed two months at the hostel and I can definitely recommend it for short or long stay. The hostel is located right next to a metro and S-Bahn Station Berliner Tor, there is a big supermarket 3 minutes walk from the hostel and a Lidl 7 minutes walk. Theres also a kebab shop right under the hostel, a vietnamese restaurant, several bakeries and McDonalds branch are less than five minutes walk from the hostel. The manager Chang [aka Mr Chang:)] and the stuff make sure that the hostel is always clean and tidy. The kitchen is very well equipped with a smart induction stove, a toaster oven and a microwave. There are many pots and pans and you can always find clean dishes to use.The showers are good with hot water 24/7.In the common area there are some sofas and tables, a coffee machine (1.80€ for a cappuccinoand free tee. Its not a party hostel - theres no bar but you can meet other travelers from around the world. The beds are pretty cozy, next to each bed theres a triple electricity socket so you can charge few devices at the same time. Theres also a small lamp next to each bed.The manager is very traveler-understanding which is really helpful in case you changed the plan after the booking, you can always speak with Chang and find a solution.
I have never had such a bad experience as with this hostel. After booking the room through the booking, I was informed that there was a problem with the payment card, after changing the details, the hostel canceled my booking. After making a new booking and paying, the hostel sent me a message saying that I am not welcome at the hostel due to my original booking. Hostel owner was very rude while we spoke. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!
We were visiting Hamburg and needed a place to stay for the night, we contacted this place and then went there. It was clean and affordable. We opted for the 8-bed dorm room because it was cheap and also privacy was not a problem for us. You just have to fill a form and pay to get the place. They give you clean sheets and you have to make use of them and make your bed and cover pillow and duvet. Plus they have clean bathrooms and kitchen too. The person at the reception is also really nice. Overall, satisfactory experience and will contact them again if needed.
Highly recommended.Clean, neat and with a good atmosphere. The owners are very friendly.Very well connected, with a metro stop at the door and the central train and bus station only 10 minutes walking. There are also many restaurants, of all prices, in the surroundings.I will definitely come back
Very nice and cozy hostel. I got everything here and feel comfortable. The receptionist are also friendly. I will highly reccommend for my vietnamese friends when they travel in Hamburg.
I definitely recommend MAC City Hostel for your stay in Hamburg. Totally trustworthy. Special thanks to the man who works usually in the morning at the reception. Absolutely professional with the delivery case of a lost suitcase from Hamburg airport.
Perfect for when you sleep 3 hours after partying in Hamburg. I wouldn’t recommend if you actually want a decent place to stay however.
Nice, clean hostel and friendly staff. Great for the price. Free car parking nearby.
Clean beds and clean toilettes. Not many backpackers though and hence the experience is not nearly as interesting as in other hostels
Great location. Very close to everything. The facilities could be better. Overall good value for money
Good internet, good walking distance to city centre (15 min). Very cold and thin walls (noisy), so use earplugs.
A hostel with responsive and helpful staff.Contact through booking messages about change of dates was not an issue, and they suggested rearrangements of two rooms that led to a lower cost. The locations is great, right next to an u-bahn entrance, next door to sausage, kebab, fries fast food, bakery, and three minutes walk from a large supermarket. Some things inside the hostel was not yet fully finished, and had some of us step up another level for showers. I would expect construction of new bathrooms to finish up relatively soon, and will at that point be very nice.
Easy to find and well signposted. 2 mins walk to the U and S underground stations. Staff very helpful and accomodating. If the sign isnt on the entrance door, the reception is based on the second floor. The lifts smell like urine and is fairly small so best to avoid it and walk up the stairs unless you have heavy luggage or mobility issues. The unit is a shared complex so there are other residents that use the building. All female dorm room is bright and clean. You will need to set your own bed up with the sheets provided. Cushion is pretty flat but it can double up. Bathrooms are mostly clean. Overall a decent stay.
I loved it here. We walked from the train station with our bags, but the underground goes right to the door if you want. Its clean and tidy, the staff do a great job and the owner is there too. One of the bathrooms is being renovated. The female one had already been done on our floor. Nice showers with good pressure. Hair driers on the wall. Nice tiles.Small kitchen but seems to work. The nicest pots and frying pans. One of the wow factors is they have a water dispenser with chilled water, tap water or my favourite sparkling (which is free to use). They have a coffee machine too which you pay a small amount for.I would come back here again.
Only stayed one night before getting train to airport. Ideal location next to u bahn or s bahn for airport. Beds rather creaky (get some wd40! )
A bit overpriced, my room was an 8 beded bedroom facing the main street which was very noisy and I couldnt get proper sleep. Sinks in the showers room need regular attention as they are always dirty.
I really like the bedding. Awesome. Different kind of tea to drink :)It was rather cold in the room first time. But after few manipulations we made it warmer and it became more comfortable to sleep. Strange placement of the WC and the shower. But everything is clean tho. Weird place to stay, however everything is ok. Especially for that price. So. Recommend.
Very clean place. Nice staff friendly. Modern rooms. Quite and confortable.
What to say, I really didnt like this hostel. The location is bad, very far from anything but at least its in front of a major subway station with several lines. The staff is nice, they are helpful to an extent, nothing special. It doesnt look all that clean but its clean enough. We were supposed to share a room (4 of uswith 4 other people but when we arrived they gave us a room just for us which we thought would be a good thing. However it was a very small room that barely had space for you to stand in it, let alone find space for your suitcase. Its almost at the level of degrading for the money youre giving them. And yes, they are not cheap, at least not for the things theyre offering.Theres also a kitchen that you can use which looks ridiculous and small. I doubt that you can do much there, I only ended up using the fridge and thats about that. All in all a terrible hostel for the money youre paying them. I honestly dont have high expectations for hostels, I travel a lot and I always try to find the cheapest possible option that has at least something above the basic stuff. But this hostel costs double then what other hostels with the same things costs.
Receptionist kept busy on phone did not say appology to customers waiting for long. The rooms, hall and toilets are nice qnd clean.
Friendly staff, clean dorm, though the showers had to be reached by exiting the hostel, using the staircase to reach another instance of the hostel where the showers were located. This was a temporary solution I was told though. The staircase also led to other apartments in the building and in the corridor there was a man sleeping overnight. Not saying that this lies within the responsibility of the hostel but was a slightly uncomfortable situation.
Decent location from the train station, although its a bit of a walk into town. Theres a metro right outside however, that can take you in and out without much hassle. The hostel itself is a little hard to find, tucked away between some shops and up a few floors, however once inside the building is very modern and clean. The wifi is decent and the rooms are pleasant. The shared bathroom can be a little busy but there are enough facilities that you never have to wait to use anything.Staff are friendly and make the checking in process stress free.
Best location ever! Great room, comfy bed, and great security. Nice staff!! Kitchen stinks, tho...
Okay, this place is awesome. I got stuck in Hamburg (missed my train fmlwas with my daughter age of 7 there. Was getting dark and I started to get frustrated... after quickly rooting out some dodgy places online, I decided to take my chances and take a 15 minutes hike. Was worth it! The hostel is a family business - the entrance is kind of hidden between two big shops, only a small A5 sized sign says MAC City Hostel on it. After finding the 2nd floor in a small elevator, in a kind of homely little hallway/hall I was greeted by a sweet receptionist who spoke perfect English and was very courteous to me. Got a nice little (clean!!!Room right away. Toilets and showers were clean - though shared. I met the Taiwanese owner: he made me feel right at home, and was very helpful. I have had super bad experiences before with cheap hostels, after MAC I wish there would be a hostel everywhere like MAC. If I ever get stuck in Hamburg again, will go back for sure. Place runs card system for the different floors, and keys for the doors, felt safe there. Super Market can be found like 1min walk from the place, and a few kebab joints in the vicinity. If I would be a backpacker I would totally hit this place. Sad I didnt take pictures - was very tired and didnt think of it.
First time staying at a hostel and I like it. Their service is really great; we booked 3 beds, and they upgraded it for a private room without paying extra. The rooms and the bedsheets are clean. Bathrooms are shared but theyre clean. They have free water and tea and you can spend your free time in the common area watching tv, which we did to follow the worldcup games. I recommend this place :)
Excellent hostel. I believe is run by an Asian/Chinesse couple. It is clean and crowded. If you decide to stay avoid the dorms/6 mix bed rooms. It has bakery next door which opens early and most importantly has supermarket 200 feet away.
Extremely clean and nice hostel. Also really cheap considering how comfy it was. Only downside I can think of is the location. It was a bit far from the downtown area. Great breakfast and late night snack places right next to the entrance!
Floor wasnt cleaned (trap under my bed), they started drilling at 9am, shower was dirty and the one and only toilet seat was full of ass hair. The location is amazing (Berliner Tor U-bahn entrance 10 meters away from entrance of this Hostel). The bunkbeds are at least 200 cm which was amazing being a tall person, thickness of mattress was fine. We paid €220 with 4 people for 2 nights in March.
“Great hostel with excellent connections in Hamburg!”Had a very pleasant stay at MAC City Hostel. Stayed in a 4-bed female room which was spacious. Each bed has its own light and socket. The hostel is conveniently located in front of a tube/train station with excellent links to Hamburg city centre (10minand 30min to the airport. It was very clean and extremely warm :Showers on the second floor were under maintenance so had to use the ones on the 3rd floor. I never had to queue for a shower though and facilities were spotless - hot water always and excellent shower pressure. Free tea is a very nice touch. I would definitely stay here again! Thanks for a perfect stay. This is isnt the hostels fault but the rudeness and lack of respect of some people who stay in hostels. I barely slept on the first night as some guests were partying, drinking and playing music until 4am in the common area and you could hear everything as all the rooms are located around this area.
I feel like the reviews I read were false. It was dirty and the sheets hadnt even been taken off from the last person when I arrived. The area it was in was really run down and gave me a bad experience of hamburg. Pay a bit more and go somewhere else.
Its OK. The room had a bad smell from whoever stayed there before us. We let rent desk know and they changed the sheets and duvet, then apologized. We sprayed with Fe breeze from the local supermarket. The toilets and showers were OK. One shower is missing a rubber washer so didnt work.. easy fix but needs doing. Staff friendly. Well equipped common areas. Common TV but only German channels. Room was tiny bit adequate. The u3 underground is right outside the doors and makes access to station / city very easy. It was OK for the price bit Ive had better for similar costs.
This was a very nice surprise!!! The girls we met at the reception were super nice, friendly, helpful and down to earth. The room was MUCH nicer than I thought it would be, and very clean. The bathrooms are also very clean, and I have very high expectations for cleanliness! If this is what hostels are like, Im definitely booking a hostel for my next trip instead of an over priced hotel room 😁❤️ I love it here! It is also very close to the subway, which is easy to figure out, even if your first language isnt Dutch or English 😁 Especially with the help of the people who work here 😊😊👍🏼
I stayed at the MAC City Hostel just for one night. The bathroom is clean, whereas showers were pretty dirty but absolutely ok for one very quick shower. Rooms are clean and bright and the staff was really really nice! I recommend it for a short stay.
Lets start with the two stars MAC earns. The hosts are nice. Just outside the door is the U3 station, cheap eats and a giant grocery store. My room was clean.Where it looses stars... There are 2 showers for women, limited hot water. You have to cross the lobby / shared lounge to get to the bathroom. Kitchen was in disarray, food left out, minimally equipt. The doors are never locked. There are no lockers in the rooms and the lockers provided are small and not very secure. No breakfast option, coffee is €1.50-3 euros from an automatic machine. It was soooooo hot in the room and my 4 person room was on the main drag so noisy. And adjacent to the lounge so lots of traffic / noise just outside the door. I can deal with that, but be warned if you cant.Seriously considered moving but only stayed 2 nights so I dealt with it... but was here for work and really impacted my ability to stay awake / be focused because it just wasnt a relaxing, secure, comfortable environment. But hey, it is better than an overnight bus or train ... or the train station.
The prices were high, €35-€45 per person per night for a bed in an 8 bed dorm. The place has zero security - everyone can just walk in. You only get a small, flimsy locker for you valuables. You have to make your own bed and dont get a towel. The washrooms are at the other end of the floor and are not that well kept. There is only one toilet and the showers dont even have locks on them. Youre supposed to undress behind a shower curtain in the main bathroom. NOT reccomended!
Quiet rooms, perfectly friendly, pleasant staff. Bathrooms and kitchen not the cleanest. Reasonable location.
Lovely location, great links into the city. Comfy bed but not good pillows. Very new and modern decor, nice bathrooms and helpful staff. No noise dampening, you can hear everything going on from anywhere in the place.
Amazing place for little money. Old building but great rooms and hotel inside. Very good location in central hamburg. Top pick.
Expensive, but it is Hamburg. Good location; can walk to many places or take public transit (subway stop nearby). Clean linens and room with comfy bed. However, hostel charged my credit card in full many days before I arrived -- which I was not expecting. Only one shower in mens bathroom (other was out-of-order). Kitchen area was very messy. Dining table hadnt been wiped down (with a soapy clothin a while. Lots of "junk" stored next to main desk.
The location was wonderful! Super quick train ride from the airport, drops you right on the doorstep of the hostel. Its also very close to the main bus terminal and train station! Although its about a mile away from the city center, you could easily walk or take the train into town. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. The bed was the most comfortable bed Ive slept in in a hostel! The owner and workers are also very nice and almost always on hand.
