Museum in an old riverside power station, with renewable energy & electrical phenomena exhibits.
Inspiring building with different exhibitions. The architecture is unique and definitely worth a visit, the exhibition was good, but not super amazing. I also liked the shop and it’s a great walk from Lisbon entre along the sea..
Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely musem! MAAT is The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, is an outward-looking museum located on the banks of the Tagus in Belém, the new building is the centrepiece of EDP Foundation’s masterplan for an art campus that includes the repurposed Central Tejo power station! I recommend to everyone and I cant wait to enjoy it during the summer 😍
We really enjoyed Maat and the diversity of the exhibitions. We were in a rush but were able to see maybe 75% of the offerings quickly in about 90 minutes.
Unfortunately this museum prioritized design and style over true purpose of art exhibit space. Aside from small floor space, there is lack of interesting exhibits to make this a memorable experience. The exterior design and the surrounding landscaping while beautiful are something you can enjoy for free. If you are looking for more substantial body of work Check out the modern art museum nearby instead. That place is run like a proper museum.
Love this place. Awesome architecture, beautiful location and just enough exhibition to keep you on your toes
Amazing exhibit on display ,(late October2022)The building itself is a sight to see
This is a small but mighty museum. The architecture is stunning and it’s worth visiting for that alone. The exhibits may be limited compared to a huge museum, but we found it comfortable to go through them in an hour and a half, we left feeling energized rather than exhausted!
If you visit maat you have to visit the shop. It has some great souvenirs
Cost 9 euro for one adult. Can buy tickets at the door. There are two buildings to go through. First building is contemporary art. Took about 30 mins to go through. You need to put any back packs in a storage locker (required by security). Cost for storage locker is 1 euro that is refundable. Second building has some cool technology art and a lot of history on the old coal power plant. Very neat to see how power was generated. This part was at least an hour. Directions to the second building was not great, so we had to ask again. Its about 100 metres down the walk way. Overall it was a great experience!
Must see point in Lisbon. Definitely worth to spend the 2h time!
Really cool museum especially if youre engineering/design/environment conscious 💚Didnt go into the modern art museum but the architecture of it and the view from it are splendid!
Impressive building, impressive location. It was interresting to bs a part of guided tour. Recommendation for visit!
It was such an amazing experience at this Museum. If you are a fan of contemporary you should take your time and visit it. There is an exhibition in new building, but also at the old power plant that is an Art and a technical Museum at the same time, which is pretty amazing.
Beautiful building. Will be closed until early October 2022 while they set up a new exhibition so never got to explore.
Very interesting museum, especially with the old power factory located next door.
A must visit for modern architecture fans. Both the exterior and interior spaces are visually inspiring, framing the view perfectly.
Under the radar art museum! We were overwhelmed by the amount of tourists in Belem area and found this museum a great escape from the crowd. The bridge view is amazing and the architecture framed the bridge perfectly! Definitely recommend this place for a quieter get away from the popular area of Belem.
Beautiful building and a great museum. I would suggest starting at the Belém tour and walk the Tagus to reach the MAAT museum.
The expositions are quite small so it doesnt take long to see all. There is a nice rooftop for sea views. Its worth combining the visit with the old power plant turned into a museum next door.
We were here a couple of weeks ago and I cant say I really liked it. There were three parts to the museum of which the first two were very interesting. The first exhibition had curved screens that had videos of Tokyo on them, which made it seem like you were walking through Tokyo which was really cool. The second exhibition was about climate change was also pretty interesting but not too elaborate. The last exhibition had contemporary art which is just not my thing.I have to say, the view and the location near the water was beautiful. And perhaps more interesting than the museum itself
When we visited, the exhibit was very informative about the civil rights history and the class struggle of black individuals in Portugal. The view outside the museum, facing the river is stunning. I was originally more interested in the power plant history of the building, but that portion of the establishment was somewhat underwhelming.
Amazing place! The coal fired old power plant turned into a museum is entirely possible to be visited. There are fully detailed explanations of all the components: turbines, electrical generators, boiler, condenser, pumps and so on... Its just amazing. I highly recommend it. 6€ with student card from any university and 9€ without. Entirely worth it!
The museum itself is pretty small for the exhibits, I was done in under 30 minutes. They had slow-mo shots of different people in places around the world and then a small exhibit based on climate change. The design in the outside is cool and it has a rooftop to take pictures from
Spectacular view to the river and Ponte 25 de Abril, nice example of modern architecture, close to the Monument to the discoveries
Very modern and pleasant architectural complex next to the restored and converted power station. Im not excited about the interior art works but rather the architecture of the museum. To see the connected power station, partly converted into exhibition spaces and partly to show how it was like
It was nice. Is mostly contemporary art, but we really enjoyed the informative animation on climate change. The restaurant is very good and also has a great view on the river, definitely a must. The adjacent museum of the electrical plan is great. Very informative.
Excellent exhibitions. The building is one of the most modern and beautiful in Lisbon.A sunny sky helps.
One of the best modern art museums Ive been to. The modern manta ray building had two very cool exhibits on which were great but for me the highlight was next door in the old power station (which is included in the very cheap ticket price). The building makes for a fantastic space for art and the exhibits - both the permanent and the temporary - were world class.
Very much enjoyed the museum especially regarding the cultural differences and uniqueness that makes up Lisbon. Also, in addition to the struggles that immigrants have had and continue to experience.
Cool museum with some fun exhibits when we visited in June 2022. Its a small place so worth going next door to Tejo before or after, tickets include both museums.
Bloody brilliant. 2 well put together exhibitions. And you get not only the main building but the power station with extra exhibitions. Well worth the money and a great way to be immersed away from the hot sun for 1 hour or 2. Bravo MAAT
If you’re a student or YA visiting this will be the best €6 you will spend on the entire trip. Spent about 3 hours exploring various exhibits at the power plant and MAAT and is genuinely mesmerising. Exhibits are sensational and will be something for everyone here’
Great location with a interesting show.Perfect for art lovers and people who wanna enjoy the incredible view from the top of the building.
It worth to visit. Modern art. Great view on the bridge. There is cafe you can seat and enjoy the view. The best view from the top. Its open area and you dont need tickets.
We didn’t go in but it’s worth a stop for the views alone! A great spot to watch the sunset too.
Fantastic art and technology gallery, with some fascinating exhibits. Whilst we were there, there was a video installation, which was very disorientating but very cool. There was also a climate change computer that calculates your personal carbon footprint .The building itself is beautiful and very photogenic. The sweeping lines look fantastic on the coast.Tip : book your ticket in advance to avoid queue. We turned up and there was no queue, but when we left it looked pretty long.Tip: don’t miss the power station next door included with your ticket price. It’s epic too.
I visited only the electricity museum which was great! Its the original power plant and the machines and equipment are in a very good condition. Its very informative too.I recommend taking the GUIDED TOUR to learn more about the engineering part.
Modern museum, expected that it was bigger. Still amazing and worth a visit.Beautiful view of the area from the rooftop.
Very big and lot to see. One hour for each museum (€9 entranceat least for visiting them. The electric one is entertaining as per it has multiple electric games at the end. Recommended.
The building presents 2 different faces to the public. The view from the rooftop is ecstatic and serves as a perfect spot to spend some time beside the sea, specially during sunset.
A really fun and interesting experience! The exhibits were very cool and interactive. Dont miss out on the views from the roof and the cafe where we had a lovely lunch!
Beautiful museum, with a viewpoint and a spectacular view. You can admire the beauty of the Tejo River, boats making tours, Puente 25 de Abril and Cristo Rei de Almada, on the other side of the river. Five stars.I love Lisbon!!!
MAAT is the museum of Art, Architecture and technology. I visited this museum the first Sunday of the month, when it’s free entry, there were some interesting exhibitions, I liked the uniqueness of this place. Everything is well organised. I totally recommend a visit!
A cool exhibition spot, but the exhibit we saw was kind of sparce. Not sure if its normally like this, but we were in and out in like 45mins - would have liked a little more bang for our buck. Also this particular exhibit had a huge flashing light out the front that couldnt be avoided and was concerning for anyone with epilepsy.
A very nice view point! You can make nice pictures from the bridge there. Worth paying a visit on your way to Belem Tower.
Their coffee shop offer amazing views over Tagus River. The architecture of the museum sets expectations quite high, so once you finish visiting you might be a bit disappointed as there is not much exhibited. The tickets also offer admission to the other museum next door, Tejo Power Station which we found more interesting.
MAAT is a museum dedicated to art, architecture and technology. It opened to the public in 2016. The museum is located directly on Tagus River. From here you can walk to Belem Tower, Geronimos Monastery, The Monument to Discoveries, as they are between 12-20 minutes walking distance from the museum. The modernly designed structure can imply the mouth of a shark if you chose your photo angle carefully. To reach the entrance you need to climb Several steps that extend to a considerable distance to form sitting areas where you can take a break and enjoy the view and the nice weather of Lisbon. You can also take the mildly rising ramp to go to the roof of the museum that serves as an observatory deck.Admission fee: 9€ (reduced: 6€)
Had an amazing tour around the museum that lasted for hours and i still think i havent seen it all. Occasionally there are interactive exhibitions and they can be pretty good and fun. For the money i think it is really worth taking a tour.
Does have everything! Building itself is a sightseeing and lot’s to see inside.Cool interactive exhibitions that bring new perspectives to climate change, dividing borders, sea-life, therapy etc.. + former power plant exhibition.Do visit both buildings and walk over the white bridge that the newer building’s rooftop continues as. There is a cute house at the other side ;)
Contemporary and abstract art combined with engineering and generators - very different but worth a visit. Extensive exhibition housed in contrasting buildings. Lots to see and do, great place to spend a few hours and reflect. Great insights into old traditions and how energy was generated from coal. The use of art is thought provoking and innovative. Worth a visit
