Piața Albert Huet FN, Sibiu 550182, Romania, Sibiu
Dramatic 14th-century church with a baroque organ, historical artifacts & a lookout tower.
Grandiose cathedral with beautiful views from the tower. It is the centrepice of Sibiu. Keep in mind that the climb to the observation deck is steep and some people may feel dizzy!
Very nice cathedral, including a tower climb. The entrance fee is relatively high.
Saint Mary” Evangelical Parish Church is one of the most impressive buildings in Sibiu. It was raised in the 14th century on the location of an old Roman church dating from the 12th century. The building is dominated by the seven level tower with the four towers on the corners, a mark showing that the city had the right of condemnation. With a height of 73.34 meters, the tower is the tallest in Transylvania. The cathedral’s tower is situated at the balcony on the southern wing and includes a Baroque style organ made by a Slovak craftsman in 1671 which replaced the first organ brought in Sibiu in 1585. The new organ was built by the Wilhelm Sauer Company (Frankfurt/Oderand installed in this church in Sibiu in 1915. At the present there exist two other organs made by this company (in Berlin – Tempelhof and in Talin - Dom). In 1997 the organ undergoes complex renovation works, nowadays being the largest in the South-Eastern Europe. The mobile inventory of the Evangelic Church in Sibiu, one of the most impressive gothic halidoms in Romania, is particularly valuable. Even though a series of cult pots, made in gilded silver by famous craftsmen in Sibiu such as Sebastian Hann, are not accessible to the public, other valuable pieces can be admired by the visitors inside the church. In the choir, in the church axis, one can find one of the most beautiful bronze fonts existing in our country. It has the shape of a calyx with a sole, foot, knot and basin, being decorated with a series of gothic inscriptions. Also, 228 booklets in relief adorn its surface, most of them being figurative representations of Byzantine influence. The font dates back from 1438 being the work of master Leonhardus. It is supposed that it was cast in the bronze resulting from the Turkish cannons captured by the inhabitants of Sibiu in 1437.
Nice views from the top
If you want to have the best view you must climb on the top of church tower. ⛪️🗼
Very high and attractive church. Yet, still need to pay few Ron to enter the church
Very nice cathedral!
Good looking white church that overviews all the city of Sibiu. The rooftop tiles of the church have a really good looking pattern that shows it’s true colours during the day.
Looks amazing from the outside and from the inside. A spectacular organ! We climbed up the tower as well. A lot of stairs but the view is worth the climbing. Great view over the city centre. Entrance is only 10 RON.
The construction is indeed impressive, however I find it disturbing to charge tourist while locals can get in for free. I didnt get inside because of that. The orthodox churches dont charge guests for entrance, no matter the historical value.
Took the tour, climbed the tower. Despite being under renovations, it was really great. Fantastic views from the tower.
Spectacular church on the outside, maintaining an austere Lutheran atmosphere on the insideIt is recently renovated, pice of admission is 2 euros + another euro for the tower. The staff guiding you are nice and competent and pictures are allowed insideOf course, as with any such attraction the tower offers breathtaking views of the town even on a cloudy day, well worth the fee
Very beautiful 😍The gothic architecture is grandiousHighly recommended. The price of the ticket is only 10 ron/2 euro for visiting the church. For visiting the tower it’s another 10 ron. Totally worth it. They income on visitors tickets is used for maintaining tue church ☺️
The Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary is the most famous Gothic-style church in Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania. Its massive 73.34 m high steeple is a landmark of the city. The four turrets situated on top of the steeple were a sign to let foreigners know that the town had the right to sentence to death
Beautiful imposant cathedral
One of the most beautiful of it’s type in the country, now not opened fully because of the rebuilding process, but the guide made the visiting part enough! Cheap entry and beautiful!
Landmark of Sibiu! The Catedrala Evanghelică din Sibiu (Sibiu Lutheran Cathedralis one of the oldest and most impressive Gothic churches in Transylvania. The current church was built between 1371 and 1520 on the spot where a 12th century Romanesque basilica once stood. One of the most striking features of the church is the tower, this 73.34 meter high tower is the third highest church tower in Romania. Interesting detail: the four small turrets indicated that the city could impose the death penalty. In the rather austere interior, the lavishly decorated epitaphs are striking; the last person buried in the church was Samuel von Brukenthal, governor of Siebenbürgen 1777-1787. Those who want to enjoy the sounds of the 1671 church organ, the largest in Southeast Europe, should come to one of the Wednesday evening concerts. So there are plenty of reasons to visit this church!
It is the cathedral of eparchy of Sibiu, inside hold funeral wreaths of important figures of Transylvania like Samuel von Brukenthal. Now it is in restoration but you can visit the clock tower were you can see the whole city.
A very old, beautiful and imposing building. Even though its partially closed for restauration, by visiting the tower you can have a perspective on how masive the building is and also it gives you a nice view over the city (in my opinion a better view than the "Turnul Sfatului").
When we visited Sibiu the cathedral was under renovation so we could only visit 10% of it, but still worth it if you are in Sibiu.
We didnt get to see the main church from the inside, but we went on a guided tour up the clocktower which was absolutely beautiful. The guide was nice and spoke very decent english but most of the time up there was used gazing out of the windows.
This is the 2nd highest building in Romania.
The historic Lutheran Cathedral is located right in the center of the old town of Sibiu. The building is very imppresive from the outside as well as from the inside, and is worth visiting. For 20 lei one can see the exhibition of stone carvings on the wall from various years. Unfortunately, lack of English explanations is making it hard to understand what exactly does we see. For another 20 lei one can climb to the Cathedral tower for an amazing view of the town and the mountains surrounding. Climbing up on the tower is highly reccomnded.
Visit the tower for a beautiful view of the city. The stairs are suwpr messy and there is barely no light, but the view from the top is worth it.
Loved it!!!! Very very beautiful and the staff was very friendly. The guide explained very beautifully and the atmosphere were very eerie(it was raining and we were the only people there). Some parts are in renovations unfortunately now but its worth a visit nonetheless.
Ancient, special, about 200 stairs to overcome for beautiful view over the city . Can watch the ringing bells if you go upstair in hours that bells ring.
A huge and towering cathedral, it can be seen from a distance. Unfortunately, the cathedral is undergoing renovations and visitors are not allowed to go inside. A staff member, who spoke little English, simply told me that it was "closed." I found out that its closed long-term. See my photo. From Wikipedia. The Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary (German: Evangelische Stadtpfarrkirche in Hermannstadt, Romanian: Biserica Evanghelică din Sibiuis the most famous Gothic-style church in Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania. For three centuries it served as a burial place for the mayors, earls and other personalities from Sibiu. This practice was banned in 1796 but one exception was made in 1803 when baron Samuel von Brukenthal was laid to rest in the crypt. In 1671 a Slovakian craftsman built an organ to replace the previous one that was built in 1585. Today the newer organ is the largest in the southeastern region of Europe. During the summer, there are concerts every Wednesday night.
Such a wonderful cathedral! I would highly advice to climb on top of the tower. It is physically demanding but so worth it!
The main part of it is still closed. You can visit the tower with a great view of surroundings. Still in a process of renovation.

Unfortunately it is under restoration so inside you can only visit one chamber and go up in the tower (wich is nice, great views).Loved this church! When we went there there was also a demonstration of iron artifacts creation using old medieval methods of the merchants of Sibiu right in front of the church. They often have temporary exhibits inside. It is worth climbing in the tower for wonderful views of Sibiu.
The main part of the church is closed for renovations that are not expected to be finished until at least the summer of 2019. In spite of that they are still charging for a small exhibit in the entrance area. For an additional fee you can climb the bell tower. The path up was narrow but it was a fun climb. The view from the top is very nice. This is definitely worth doing.
Impressive architecture, it takes more than 100 steps to get to the top of the building but the sights from the towers over the town of Sibiu are simply priceless.
The highest view point in Sibiu! The climb is not that bad..we loved it here!
The view from the tower of the Lutheran Cathedral over the entire Sibiu is spectacular. You can see the roofs of the traditional houses and the mountains that surround the city. Price for the ticket is not expensive but going on the stairs to the top can be a real adventure because stairs are made of wood (old woodand are only consolidated by iron in some areas. Eventhough this is a must try in Sibiu
You have to see even the tower! Great view
I love it as every one rated beautiful view from the top. The colorful roof. Inside there are vivid figures on the wall and on the organ. I also attent evening concert(6 Pm every tuesday, 10 lei, just play organs.
A beautiful cathedral, gothic style.
All about the views; I think this is the highest point in Sibiu. At the top, you can open the windows, but beware of pigeons; theyre trying to get in. Dont forget to close them when youre done.
Go to the tower, the view is amazing. If youre interested in the history and art, let a tour guide show you around (included in admission).Very cool.
A must see in SibiuBeautiful to see, dont miss the chance to climb to the top, it will look scary but it is worth the climb which itself takes you trough all the dark parts of the church (the climb is not for small children)The view from top is beautiful
Nice view from the tower.
Go up top into the roof for a great view of the city
Awesome views over the city.
The view from the tower is absolutely amazing.
Very very beautiful Lutheran cathedral. It is possible to visit the tower too, from there you can have a wonderful view of the historical center.
Impressive cathedral, the roof is so beautiful. The climb to the tower is a MUST.However, I missed some information about the details, we bought a paper and it didnt even say anything interesting.
Excelent place to visit especially by climbing to the top and see and amazing view. The climbing its a must do if ur there its exciting.
Amazing! Make absokutely sure that you DO NOT MISS the climb to the tower. The view up there is breath taking, but even more so, the climb up to the tower is like out of a Indiana Jones movie (or Assassins Creed game). While at the ground floor, go around the back, theres an entire room of funeral stones, dating back to the 1500s, with amazing craftsmanship. The cathedral also pipe-organ concerts every now and then, as well as quires singing.Put this on your list!
Best attraction in Sibiu. Really good view. Honestly though the climb up was even better - something out of an Indiana Jones movie. Must go here while in Sibiu
The Cathedral is the second biggest church of the country, with a height of 74 meters. The Cathedral was finished in 1520 and until the passing of Sibiu and then the entire Saxon nation to Lutheran faith in 1545, both the church and the entire city were Catholic. The interior is newly renovated and the Cathedral gives you a feeling of peace, when you enter it (costs about 5 Lei per adult to enter). You can also climb the tower (for a tex of 2 Lei), but the most special thing about the Cathedral are the Pipe Organ concerts every wednesday from 18:00. If you visit Sibiu, the Cathedral is definitely worth seeing.
