Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen in Portland
Description
Privilege
We were in Portland to celebrate my birthday. We took two tours. One tour was a sightseeing tour so they drove by the restaurant and said it was a must see stop. Our tour on the following day was a food tour and we were delighted to learn they were taking us here to sample the menu. We had the Vietnamese coffee, the Sugarcane Shrimp (the only thing on the menu I wasnt thrilled with), wontons, and chicken wings. All I can say is the meal was amazing. So yummy that we decided to have dinner there the next day. We ordered the wontons and chicken wings again and added a Pork Bahn Mi. So delicious. Well definitely be back on our next trip to Portland.
MoreI liked it. Good pho. Great staff. Our order was messed up but they made it right immediately.
MoreDon’t be put off by the queue, this moved quickly. You can sit inside or outside. Inside decor was funky with dragon motifs and with a slick playlist. We enjoyed the shrimp spring rolls (they looked like a piece of artand they were delicious. The coconut chicken curry was spicy and fresh, beef pho had authentic flavours. We paired these with a few beers, the Sapporo can is huge! Highly recommend and would go back and order a chicken rice dish as this looked yummy.
MorePleasant meal! Counter service and then food is brought out to the table. Cocktails were rather good but came after the food. Tofu salad was ingenious and delicious. The chicken rice bowl was great, except the crispy rolls that came on the side were more like chewy rolls (and not so tasty). We had the green beans starter which was delicious—definitely would recommend getting it spicy! The tofu coconut curry was delicious, filling, fresh and flavorful. The tofu Tom yum pho had a nice flavor, great noodles, and lots of tofu—big portion. The stewed tomatoes didn’t seem to add a lot and overall it was much more like pho than Tom yum. Overall would recommend, great portions and a beautiful restaurant. Some of the recipe decisions were not what I was expecting however and could definitely be more excellent with a few tweaks. Just expecting more for the price!
MoreWe were visiting town and decided to give this place a try. Although I didn’t know what to expect of this place at first since it has this kind of hipster vibe, I was both very happy and pleased with the food and drinks, as well as the service. Our party consisted of 9 people and we were accommodated in the seating area outside, which was warm and nice. Next, the food was delicious and definitely exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend their banh mi and curry plate.
MoreI love the food from this place, and it comes in good sized portions! The seating, both indoor and outdoor, is nothing special, but the food is tasty and the atmosphere is casual (you pick the food up when it’s ready and bus yourself). I got the tofu rice bowl and it was excellent.
Morethey should grill the chicken or marinate the chicken and some sort of good marination so the chicken is not bland with the salad. I don’t like bland chicken lolWhenever I order delivery from this place they never provide utensils. When I asked for extra shrimp they just gave me two extra shrimp and I paid for extra shrimp… not 2 pieces extra lol.I do not like dining in here unless I’m going straight to the bar to buy drinks, I think the drinks are the best part about this place if you’re going to ask me. I have never had traditional pho so who knows if this even tastes authentic I wouldn’t know
MoreBest Pho broth Ive had in the PNW although the noodles were slightly overcooked which took off a star for me as I dont like my noodles to break while Im still eating my pho. Although Id give it a 4.5 if I could. Super cute place. Very popular. Went for lunch and was in line for a bit. They have a separate take out window which is nice. Downtown location so parking maybe a little annoying. We went for a weekday lunch. Would definitely go again. Staff was friendly and helpful.
MoreWe were staying at a hotel nearby and tried here for lunch. You order at the counter and are assigned a place to sit either inside or outside. We chose inside because it was a hot day.I had the coconut curry (mild by choiceand my friend ordered the pork rice. Both dishes were delicious and filling. They were served quickly (the restaurant was busyFun decor and atmosphere inside the restaurant.Highly recommend! The lighting inside puts a pinkish tinge on the food photos.
MoreAwesome decor and food! Was not expecting both amazing food and thoughtful decor but were blown away when we walked thru the doorsI also felt like we got quite a lot of food for the price we paid! A rarity in this city
MoreEverything was very tasty and fresh. The line to order was very long, and moving extremely slow. Ended up ordering pick-up on food delivery app and think I got served faster. Loved the papaya salad and summer rolls.
MoreThe service was average at best if you considered it just only bringing your food to the table. The food was also average tasting as well for Vietnamese food as the chicken was way over done and dry. Would come here more for the ambience .
MoreAwesome lunch. Be careful as the yummy food can easily exceed your expectations and capacity. A late lunch held our appetites at bay late into the evening. Also, we noticed they promptly close at 2:30 pm.Chicken curry, coconut shrimp, string beans, cream cheese wontons. Only downside, outside seating is takeout only.
MoreGreat meal and fun Friday night scene near the Downtown hotels. Wait to order at counter where you are assigned a table. Lemongrass stir fry was top notch. Two covered outdoor seating areas and amazing interior.
MoreI was recommended this spot by some friends and it absolutely didnt disappoint. The smell of this restaurant from several buildings down was like a sirens call to me, bringing me in. It was busy, so be mindful that a wait is expected, but the wait is worth it. Friendly staff greeted us and got our order taken. There arent many options but you dont need a huge menu to get expertly crafted goods. I ordered the luc lac and a cocktail that blew my mind. I will absolutely be going back here again. Great for a date night spot!
MoreBeautiful Asian style art in the restaurant and extremely fast, excellent service. By the time we ordered and got our forks and chopsticks and sat down, the food was out. This was about a turnaround time of 2-4 minutes for our order of beef pho, papaya salad and chicken coconut curry. The salad and curry portions were huge! Enough curry and salad to feed 2-3 people so we had to take leftovers!Definitely recommend if you need a fast casual dine in restaurant to eat at with authentic flavors. There are also outdoor seating options.
MoreVery cool and unique place for Vietnamese food. It is also a bar. I like the atmosphere and food. They are really high tech and you can order with a QR code. The papaya salad, luc lac steak cubes and steak rolls were so yummy and lots of flavor. I like it
MoreLuc Lac was very good! The lime vinaigrette that comes with the side salad was surprisingly amazing! That wasnt even the main but definitely very good. Pork Crispy Rolls were meh. The fried rice paper overpowered the taste of the pork filling.
MoreI’m Vietnamese, breathe, cook, and eat Vietnamese food throughout my life. I actually avoid trying Vietnamese restaurants while I travel due to multiple disappointments in the past. When I found Luc Lac restaurant, its massive reviews, and high ratings, I decided to give it a chance. We ordered “com bo luc lac”, “bo tai chanh”, and egg rolls. This is what I discovered:Bo luc lac: $23 good rice, the beef was a little bland, very chewy outside but tender inside due to possible deep fried technique.Bo tai chanh: $10. decent taste, about less than 10 pieces of beef that were the size of a quarter coin; basically too little meat and plenty of cilantro, green onion.Egg rolls: $8 (4 countsthe only authentic part was the wrapping; the filling was negligible and tasteless. The dipping sauce was just a generic sweet and sour sauce from mass production carried in any Asian market. The worst of the 3 dishes I orderedWill I come back? Maybe, because of the above average taste. Definitely NOT, because of the price.Husband’s take: way overpriced and overrated.
MoreLuc Lac is such a descriptor of Portland. Good food with weird twist in a great place with a non traditional look. Ambience was hip hop with colored lights, tattooed-esque dragons on the wall meets diner seating and bar!10/10, would eat here again. Had their triple meat pho, and it was so good - I didn’t add sriracha to the broth! That’s a first for me.Bahn mi was good too, but my gf ate it all before I got to really have more than one bite.Got their slushie, totally Asian because it’s not too sweet. LolTheir take on Thai iced tea also, could be sweeter but great flavor.Oh we also got their lemongrass spring roll. Good, not amazing.
MoreDefinitely an experience eating here! It was an interesting mix of a retro bar and vietnamese cuisine. The music was upbeat and has a bar-y feel. The food came SO fast. We just ordered and right before we sat down, the food came. I’ve never experienced that speedy of a service. This is even faster than McDonalds!🤌🏼 you serve yourself in terms of getting your own utensils and water cups.Chicken pho 4/5 - chicken breast was very soft. Portion was huge! You could share with another person or divide it into 3.Shrimp spring roll 4/5 - I think the spring roll is a little pricey. However, it was dense and good. I love the peanut sauce on the side.
Moremodern vibes & great date night spot — food service is super quick too, especially for the quality of the food! would HIGHLY recommend the pho, the broth was so fragrant and the beef brisket was tender & practically melts in your mouth!
MoreBeautiful decorated and designed. When you enter the place you start looking around from top to bottom.Great ordering system and fast. The cashier was also very knowledgeable and niceThe food was amazing must try everything
MoreFound this spot during a recent business trip to Portland. When I arrived, there was a line out the door and down the street - a great sign. I had some time so I got in line and it moved reasonably quickly. You order at the counter and they give you a table number. The food came quickly and it was fantastic. I got the wings small plate and the Luc Lac plate with the marinated tenderloin. Both were excellent.
MoreHappened to walk in because it was one of the few places that were open a little later. Juicy, slurpy, spicy, wonderful food! Had the brisket pho and crispy rolls with a fat Sopporo. Belly was happy!
MoreHip-hop and Pho?! Sign me up.The place gets pretty crowded (for good reason, the food is bomb!So plan ahead.Great drinks menu here, too!
MoreAwesome environment! Staff were Super Friendly and Helpful! Lemongrass Stir-fry was on point and the Cream Cheese Wontons were Delicious!
MoreGreat vibes. The plate presentation was nice. The food itself is good, but nothing thatll make you want to smake yo mama . The drink had one giant ice cube with "LL" engraved in it. I thought that was an elegant touch:and the drink was strong. You order and pay at the counter before sitting. It also askes for the tip at time of payment. While at the table, zero customer service. They drop the food and drink from the bar off and thats the last you get service. This was the 1st time here, if I had known, I would have done that part differently.
MoreWent here following the hype. Yes the place is funky. Yes you need to queue as its ALWAYS busy. Yes the ingredients are very fresh. I had the combo vermicelli bowl that looked amazing but the meat was cold, chewy and tough. The salad and the fried rolls very tasty. Overall a LAClustre experience...
MoreGreat Vietnamese restaurant with solid selection of food and drinks. Got the coconut curry that was amazing, tons of veggies and chicken included. Friends got the vermicelli noodle combo both which comes with 4 meat skewers and a delicious veggie blend
MoreOne of the best Vietnamese places ever. However, do not do Patio seating or delivery, Dine-in is where it’s at. I was in Portland for 3 days, and ate here every day.The food here is really great and amazing value for what it is (~25 PP). Definitely get the Pho and Fresh Spring Rolls. The fried prawns were also amazing. Did not get the chance to try anything else, but these were more than enough to eat on repeat.Location is a bit sketchy as is all of Downtown Portland, but you can park in this small unmarked square a block away from the restaurant which will minimize the risk of getting mugged. And even despite the location, it’s still very much worth it.Patio is pretty unmaintained and dirty, and you get to-go containers which makes the food suck. Pho is stuck together, and food gets soggy inside a box. The meats as part of the Pho get stuck together as well. Which is why I highly recommend against anything other than dine-in.On the other hand, inside the restaurant you get chic furnishing and clean tables, the food comes to you in a well presented manner and everything is at fresh-out-of-kitchen temperature.
MoreCream cheese wonton ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- didnt like the sweet and sour sauce too much, ate it with mae ploy sweet chilli sauce instead- was super delicious as take out. Popped it in the air fryer.Pork bbq bahn mi ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- I absolutely loved every part of this. In fact more than the luc lac. I loved the pork and I loved the bread and vegetables.- so flavorfulLuc lac ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- medium rare was perfect- the meat didnt bleed- the rice was delicious
MoreLuc Lac was great! The place on a weekend night was packed, so lines were long but worth the wait. Food was served quickly, and was extremely good. The namesake Luc Lac was fantastic, as was the pho.The price point on the food was great, although the luc Lac was the most expensive (and also worth it). You could easily spend less than $15 for a single meal here. The tipping point are the drinks, which are very yummy as well! But the price point on a bar drink matches some of the full meals!Would 100% come back here, just skip the drinks if youre on a budget.
MoreLooking for some amazing Vietnamese food? Check out Luc Lac and you won’t be disappointed. My first time - I recommended the Shrimp spring rolls, pork banh mi, and the house special Luc Lac.Parking is street only. Enjoy!
MoreLoved this spot. We ordered at the counter and sat down and our food came out crazy fast in only a few minutes. I got the combo vermicelli bowl and didn’t totally realize how much food that was. A huge piece of chicken, pork, pork sausage and shrimp were on it. If I went back I would probably just go for the pork. The fresh spring rolls were great and the peanut sauce was 💯. I also was obsessed with the Grilled Pork Banh Mi and would get that regularly if I lived in Portland. We went right at 4:30 and when we left a little after 5 there was already a line at the counter. My sister also said they used to have an amazing happy hour deal but doesn’t look like that exists anymore.
MoreBest banh mi ever! Everything else was just ok. The Luc Lac would have been better if the pieces were cut smaller so you get more crispy surfaces, the large chunks were quite challenging. Wings flavor was a bit strong/salty.
MoreThe staff is very friendly and helpful with the menu selections and how the restaurant is set up. You grab your own utensils and napkins but everything else is brought to you. You also grab water where the utensils are. The portions are a good size for me, not to much that I feel bloated but enough to fill me up with out needing appetizers or anything extra. The soup base is good and a very familiar flavor. The toppings were great the meat and other ingredients were of good quality and texture. The noodles are the same as with other places that is usually very consistent no matter where you go, its not like ramen on udon. I really enjoyed this restaurant and I was happy that I gave it a chance.
MoreGot string beans and Thai coconut tofu curry. Both at level 3 spice, which was not overly spicy for me. The spring beans had a good snap to it and the curry was nice and creamy.
MoreWe visited Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen before we hit up the Justin Bieber concert at Moda Center. Few things: (1if you’re vegan they got some options here (2get the papaya salad (without shrimpand (3tofu the spring rolls (however these were mediocre). Ambiance is definitely 100% energy is great. The water dispenser takes a REALLY long time to fill a glass, but the entire outfit makes up for this one minor negative point.
MoreAwesome atmosphere, very up town, funky vibe. Music is bit loud for conversations, but cool. Feels a bit like a night club. Food is beautiful and tastes great. FRESH the way its supposed to be. Friendly staff.
MoreI so love a great bowl of Pho, and had been wanting some since moving to Portland and my Son’s took me here after arriving from a long flight, let’s just say everything about this place is amazing!!!! From the decor, the service, food, drinks, music and more!!! I will be returning a must have🥰🥰🥰
MoreLovely place and very accessible! The food is great and didn’t have to wait long. I also love that it is open until 11:00 PM. Not a lot of restaurants are open that late. LOVE THE PHOOOO! I also like the environment they did great with the decor!
MoreAmazing food and such a great atmosphere! We had to wait a bit because it was so busy (a great sign for a restaurantand the staff was friendly and seemed to enjoy their work (also a great sign). The hip hop was turned up loud and the food was stellar. We wish we were staying longer so we could hit it up again tomorrow! We’ll be back!
MoreI was walking around downtown exploring and looking for lunch. I happen to see Luc Lac down the street as there seemed to be a line. One of my rules is that when it comes to food in a foreign city, you follow the lines.I found it was a Vietnamese restaurant and I have my standard staples of pork Banh Mi and spring rolls. I also saw they did green beans, so I ordered those to go as well. My hotel was a few blocks away, but the food was still hot when I got to my room. The banh mi was tender and had a lot of meat. I think the spring rolls could probably use a little more shrimp for what it cost, but it was still good. The green beans were also pan-fried very well and tasted excellent. I had probably ordered too much as I could not finish the green beans but knocked off the rest.I would definitely come back if in town again.
MoreBeen trying to get here for 3 years and it was worth the wait. Staff was friendly. Patio seating was nice and spaced out with a heater above the table. Food and wine were perfect. Definitely will be coming back again, next visit
MoreDue to covid, this restaurant does not do indoor seating. They do have an outdoor seating area that closes at 10pm. If youre interesting in grabbing food to go, they are usually open until midnight!I love pho so I was super excited to try this place before the reviews were amazing! I will have the say I loved the vermicelli dish we ordered. That was by far the best in terms of flavor and variety of meats. They provide a good amount of food as well. Would definitely recommend this place if youre a fan of Vietnamese food!
MoreLuc Lac was one of my favorite places to visit for lunch when I worked at a office downtown! I returned on a rainy day to have Chicken Cocunut Curry, one of my favorites! It did not disappoint with tender chicken, crunchy green beans, bamboo and chunks of pineapple which are such a tasty contrast to savory spice. The restaurant has built excellent structures for sitting outside. There are picnic tables with a hanging heater at each table. I miss the whimsical dining room and hope to sit there in the future, but what a great adaptation for outdoor dining! I am looking forward to another rainy day trip.
MoreHad the coconut curry. It was equally as good as having curry in Thailand. The depth of flavor was amazing. We thought level 4 spicy would be hotter but overall cannot complain. We also tried a Banh Mi which was also excellent. The pork was juicy and flavorful and there was a perfect balance of mayo and fresh veggies. Will definitely be back next time we visit Portland. We also had a cocktail and a raspberry sour which was super fruity and not overly sour.
MoreGood cocktail menu, food is delicious (only minor ding would be the beef was not medium rare as selected, closer to well done), the outdoor patio spaces are nicely laid out and the heat lamps do an excellent job so hopefully they can keep those going through some lower temperatures. Would definitely come back.
MoreOverall the food is ok, but definitely over rated. Doesn’t worth if you’re visiting Portland and only has few days, please try some other good restaurants.Beef train pho is the worst dish, the soup taste weird, and the rice noodle too soft, you can’t even eat it with chopsticks. The taste is so bad, I have to throw it away.Papaya salads, cane shrimp, shrimp spring roll are just ok, lots of Vietnamese resultants can do better than this one.The most famous Luc Lac is also disappointed, the beef is hard to chew, very salty. The rice flavor is very simple, I can even make better fried rice by myself easily.
