This is one of the places I bring my family visitors because there is so much story and culture. The grounds and the buildings are well maintained. The grounds are open even when the office is not, so people can walk but are not able to see the inside of the buildings.

This was such a good experience. The people, "living" there in 1850, were so very informative. Learned quite a bit about the area, and Canada in general. The restaurant was closed for a private party, so didnt have the chance to enjoy that. We did however, truly enjoy the Adirondack chairs that are situated looking out at the Red River. Hats off to all the employees there. Definitely worth a visit.

This place reminded me at once of the TV series "Outlander" season 4 onwards. Surprisingly, the first settlement house that greets you is the James Fraser house who is also the name of the lead character. I loved the way staff are dressed in period costumes as it added authenticity to the surroundings. You will experience how they skin animals for their needs, fabricate steelworks, go to a shop, bake bread. Youll find some native houses but I wish they could add some people to be more interactive.

Despite not being able to enter buildings during Covid, Parks Canada has set up outdoor stations to share historical story and fact...actors are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The emphasis this year on Treaty 1 really helped me to want to learn more about our complicated history and the reality of the Indigenous experience from the time of the Treaties, and how it has affected their people. A beautiful spot, well worth the visit.

Love taking our kiddos here to explore the well-preserved site of Lower Fort Garry. This is a national historic site that has just reopened with live interpreters dressed in mid-19th century costume. Currently, you are unable to go into any of the historical buildings but many of the contents are on display outside. Treaty One is 150 years old this year and there is a special activity set up around this. Its a beautiful way to spend 2-3 hours. Restrooms are open.

Its an absolutely beautiful place thats worth visiting. The fact that the original walls are still present is really cool. Its unfortunate that due to covid we werent able to go in the buildings but walking around was just as cool. Definitely a must stop.

Despite the covid restrictions, we were able to fully explore the grounds around the buildings in the fort. Interpreters working there shifted in and out of character, telling us about the history of Treaty 1 land and the impact HBC had on the land, trading, and relationships with the various indigenous and Metis people living in the area. I felt it was a balanced recounting of Manitobas history and I appreciated that many of the people working there spoke of their mixed indigenous and european ancestry. It helped me to understand how complicated and nuanced our shared past really is. Thank you for opening my eyes and helping me to learn more in such a loving and gracious way!

The work Parks Canada has done to make this a fantastic experience during a pandemic is exceptional. Its quite possible that the overall visitor experience is better now than in the past, even though you arent allowed in the buildings. I would encourage any young families who need a staycation event here in southern Manitoba to make a trip out to Lower Fort Garry.

The last time I had been here was when I was a kid in the early 1980s. Had we not been affected by the pandemic, the buildings would have been open to the public. The main building, though, would have been closed anyway due to a water leak.I really appreciated the great demeanor of the actors who were present to give us glimpses into the lives of the people who worked and resided in and around the fort.My favourite part was hearing the cook tell us what drinks he made there (tea, hot chocolate and even coffee though that wasnt typical in the late 1800s). Theres more but I suggest you visit the Fort to find out.

A must visit place if you are in Winnipeg. The stuff is doing a great job recreating the history of the era and the place itself. Knowledgable and friendly, they were eager to answer our questions. The exhibits were very nice and took us back in time. They were also serving awesome freshly baked cookies made in wood burning oven.

Was 12 years since I last went here. The last time, it was more crowded due to free Canada Day admission. There was a special activity/scavenger hunt for the kids due to National Historic site day. The park is populated by costumed actors re-enacting life back at the forts heyday. They also happily provide information and answer any questions visitors may have. There are also special activities. There was a group taking part in making bannock and butter. The site contains many structures, each displaying/preserving the purpose it used to serve (homes, blacksmith, store, clinic, etc). A nice peak into life when the country was still being built.

Me and my kids enjoyed visiting this venue. The personnel/actors on site are dressed in old fashioned clothing and even speak in old fashioned English. There is a working blacksmith and bakery. I have also played a few games with my kids. It wont be interesting to toddlers though, IMHO. Kids starting age 4-6 have a better chance to like the place and enjoy the visit.

Went during the middle of the week in the summer so not many people around, which was okay by us. Always a great experience when we come here! The staff are informative and explained many things. The blacksmith made a nail for our out of town guests and pictures are welcomed! Love the history of Lower Fort Garry.

I love our national parks. Theyre always very well maintained and lower fort Garry was no different. Cheap entrance fees and the staff go out of their way to answer your questions and show you how something worked in the mid 1800s. They play the part as best as they can.

Very well maintained and very good atmosphere with staff dressed in 1850s costume. All questions answered and dialogue is is done in period. This place is very historic and well decorated with authentic decor in all the buildings. A real pleasure to spend the afternoon taking in all there is to see and do. Bring a picnic lunch or dine in the Provisions cafe in the information centre. Well worth the price of admission.

Most of the buildings were manned by staff in period costume who acted out the activities of people from the forts history. The main governors house was closed when we visited which was unfotunate. There is a shuttle service for visitors with mobility issues but it was not well publicized or offered to people with walkers. It is a long walk from the visitors centre to the Fort. The cafeteria was quite nice with reasonable prices. You can even have events there such as weddings with a tent for receptions of up to 300 people.

Plan to spend some time here. Take a picnic. Hang out on the grounds. Its dog-friendly, even in the buildings. Interpretive guides adopt characters. Play along. Many would do well in improv!Highlights are the Blacksmith and the Bake House. Demos are frequent.Obviously, a superb place to take kids. In 2017, admission is free. It will still be worth it when they charge again.

It was a really cool place with rich history and events, but some of the actors seemed to be annoyed that they were working there, and gave the inquiring children I brought from my summer camp clipped, condescending answers. I enjoyed going and so did the kids, however the attitudes of the actors were a bit of a letdown. Recommended, especially for history buff adults.

Nice historical site. A bit difficult to walk around during the winter with all of the ice, but its really nice during the summer with the lush green grass and flowers. The museum is nice to visit. Definitely recommend going during the day when there are tours going on. Its a decent sized fort, so you have lots of ground to explore.

A beautiful large stone fort with well-informed actors in each building who stay in character the whole time and provide an excellent background of early pioneer life on the prairies. Its a lot of fun and great learning experience for local history buffs. A must see for all tourists and foreigners, especially families. Best to go during the summer months. Plan for about 2 to 3 hours to walk through it all. Bring a camera for really nice photos. There is also a small interpretive center and restaurant nearby.
