Loughcrew Cairns, Corstown, Oldcastle, Co. Meath, Ireland, Ros Comain
Neolithic burial chambers dating to circa 3300 BCE, with stone carvings & rock paintings.
Cold and extremely windy the day we went. Be prepared to hike. A little hard, but worth the hike once you reach the top. Great tour and experience to see the burial mounds and to listen to the history behind it.
Great to be selected to roam about at this ancient site.So spiritual, peaceful and some view. Please everybody respect it and dont climb the cairn , as is can lead to collapse of its structure.
Beautiful hidden gem of a site, make sure you have tour guide to explain the history to get the full experience.
A prehistoric burial chamber along with a number of other very ancient burial sites at the top of a stiff marked climb, offering fabulous views of the local area.
An underrated site, well worth the uphill walk. Took the OPW guided tour (freewith Rodney - really informative and enjoyable, learnt so much.
It s always beautiful to reach the top and get a 360 Degres view. With the sun and the free guide and such great neolithic monuments it was a real pleasure
Fascinating place, older than Newgrange and Stonehenge. Lovely guide book available for 50cent. Guides available. Good trek up steps and hill so not buggy friendly. Age 5+
Lovely place to visit 😊 Guided tour is recommended to get all of the history 😊
Rather off the beaten track, but maybe a better experience for it. A short, but steep climb rewards you with a 360 degree panorama. Series of neolithic monuments to explore. Some more interpretation would have been good. However, if you arrive at the right time on site guides can enhance the experience.
Its quite an uphill trek but worth it and very doable. Great views from up above if you get the weather & amazing to think these are 5,000 years old.
Steep climb to the top but worth it to see 19 counties the monuments go back thousands of years
That place its great for walk to feel a bit magical around this place
My husband, aunts, and I went to Loughcrew on our holiday to Ireland. I was glad I packed some tennis shoes (I’m normally in flip flopsfor the hike up to the top. It was somewhat physically challenging since it seemed like we were going straight up, but the view was worth it. We poked around a bit until it was time for the tour, and we really enjoyed learning from the guide. Would definitely do it again.
I realize how out of shape Im in when you take this walk up the steep hill to experience this awesome place. It was worth the walk up. The burial mounts was impressive. I could understand why this spot was used for putting your love ones ashes to rest here. The surrounding views of Ireland and the mountains beyond, even a lake, was seen from this location. All this happened many, many centuries ago. Its worth seeing if you have some extra time on your hands!
We managed to climb the cairn in less than 30mins with 4yo 2.5yo and a buggy with 1.5yo. Steep in places but manageable and well worth the spectacular views from the top. We actually went back the later that night to walk up and watch the sunset.
Beautiful part of the world and just as impressive as the Hill Of Tara. The tea shop is very good and you can always stay in the yurts if you want to stay over for the sun-rise!
This place is magical the scenic views of county Meath and you can see all the way to Tipperary. Its free and the opw are there everyday to tell you whatever information you
Such a glorious place. The views that day were a bit misty due to earlier rain but still incredible. The hike up didnt take long but was a bit of a climb with some steep grades. The site itself is fascinating and I want to learn more about it: what are the lines radiating out from Cairn T representing? Is that a stone circle in the next field over (sadly not accessible)? Would love to return and explore this site again.
The history and view are well worth the long long walk up hill to this amazing place
Lovely visit on a nice windy day plenty of walkers enjoying the view. Would have appreciated a hot drink in the visitors centre afterwards but it was closed
A stunning location. Knew so little about it, one of Irelands best kept secrets. It is a healthy uphill walk to reach it.
Megalithic cairns located high in the Lough Crew hills, of the finest views in Ireland
Its amazing place but entry to the biggest one was closed
Definite must see to experience Irelands ancient east . Megalithic cairns on hills around the area. Stunning views taking in many counties from the top . Glamping/camp site nearby. The hill leading to the main site is very steep so something to consider if you are taking small children or the elderly. Recon first.
Love this place. Walk up barefoot, short hike, enjoy the view and the peace!Dont leave without making a wish at the Hags chair!Walk down to the Campsite for a coffee and slice of cake,or headover to Loughcrew Gardens for a delish sourdough sambo
Enjoyed my visit, not to steep a climb , good parking available. Dogs permitted on a leash. Site is kept well, no litter.
Quite OK, but nothing spectacular and a lot, a lot sheep 🐑 droppings. Actually the view on the fields was more interesting than a thombs themselves 😅
One of the four great passage tomb sites in Ireland. Loughcrew is a series of tombs spread across several hills near Oldcastle in Meath. The tombs date from the Neolithic period and are probably in or around 5300 years old. The largest of these tombs is Cairn T, on the hill of Carnbane East. There is a car park and a little walk over the fields to the top of the hill brings you to cairns. The views are wonderful, as this is the highest point in County Meath and on a clear day you can see Slieve Gullion and other mountains to the north. Most of the tombs only remain as stone circles, but Cairn T has an intact central chamber, which is fenced off. However, even though technically you can get a key, the passageway is barred by a steel support after about 2 metres, so there is no real point in getting the key. The rock carvings can be partly viewed through the iron doorway anyway. A nearby tomb is completely open and also has some impressive rock carvings. The site boasts some amazing views, but it is not wheelchair friendly, and, as one is walking over grass and sheep fields, some form of waterproof footwear is advisable.
We walked up to the top which took about 20 minutes. We were very lucky to have a nice sunny day. The views from the top is fantastic. Well worth the walk up the hill.
This was the first stop on our camping holiday. Around the boyne valley the camp site is lovely with three sites 1 for tents 1 for campervan and 1 for glamping.. has all services you need .. wifi at the reception area phone signal is ok .. staff are very friendly and helpful.. the weather wasnt great but its Ireland the loughcrew cairns are a 15 minute walk from the site and old castle town is 5 min drive all in all great place to stay .
Great site with lovely view after a short walk to the top of the hill. Take the tour, it will give much more information making the place all the more intriguing
Well worth a visit in the off season when you have the place to yourself. Fantastic views from the top. Takes about 10 minutes to reach. However, the cairn itself is locked as the OPW are carrying out "essential work". But reading the other comments, it seems this is going on a long time with no sign of it reopening any time soon. The OPW also have the monument littered with "Danger, no climbing" signs. As its not exactly mount Everest, I suggest you ignore these and follow one of the tracks onto the top of it. From here youll get a lovely view of the smaller ones around. Overall its well worth the views, especially on a blustery day in the off season. Enjoy.
Great tour, great guide. He knew what he was talking about and the history is amazing! Amazing views too!
Incredible structures, lovely views, and a nice little hike. Please note only one cairn is on public land.
Absolutely stunning and all the more amazing to think this was built over 5000yrs ago.Was there on a damp and drizzly morning, but when the mist cleared the landscape revealed all around was well worth the climb and the wet feet.
Beautiful spot amazing views a little bit of a steep hike up but wont take long. Its not wheelchair friendly at all Im sorry to say.Personally I think its better then Newgrange bit more to look at in your own leisure.Bring a picnic.Dont leave valuables in the car.Its an amazing natural healing place.
Visited the passage tomb in Loughcrew, had not known about it before but was well impressed that this old, about 5000 years old, structure was preserved on the hill for all to see. Unfortunately the inside of the tomb was closed for the day for upkeep, but still a free walk around the site where I was well able to take in the splendour and significance of this ancient irish site.A bit of a steep walk up to it though, up a little hill, but it is well worth it though as not only do you get to see the passage tomb but also to take in the amazing views from atop. Plenty of lovely green fields on show, and a lot of white dots (sheepcan be seen far off in the distance.Went on a lovely summers day and was very enjoyable. Also was amazed at how busy it was, with a lot of tourists up and down the hill while I was there, busloads of them of all age groups.Interesting and worth a look.
It’s so beautiful, peaceful and gorgeous here. There’s free entrance but the park ranger (?will give you a ticket so they can keep track of how many people are visiting. Definitely recommend wandering around here and getting lost in such a scenic place.
Must see in the Cavan/Meath area with amazing views of the countryside. Its even older than newgrange and far less of a tourist trap as its free and easily accessible.
Didnt get there in time for a guided tour, but it was a great hike with breathtaking views! Could not access the tombs, but you could see the carvings on the walls just inside the gated entryway and the satellite tombs were open to the public.
Absolute hidden gem, great for family day out.Walk up the hill is a bit steep but suitable for all age groups will reward you with 360° views and piece of history.Dont forget to get coffee and cake on the way back while your kids play on the playground.
beautiful view.Reallt nice to see. There really needs to be some kind of security to prevent people climbing on it. it wont be there too much longer, if people continue climbing on it and moving rocks.
Nice place full of mystery. The wheel of time makes feel its presence. A real holistic place. Have a look at their calendar for special ceremonies.Dont forget to stop for a tea and enjoy the art exhibition in the shop
These ancient hills and tombs, together known as Slieve na Calliagh, is not overrun by tourists and the view is breathtaking. The climb from the small parking area (fits 10 -/+ carsto the highest point (in Meathat a leisurely pace takes approximately 12 mins. Its not an arduous climb and most children would easily manage it as would any active grandparents. I have to say it is well worth the visit there is also historical information boards dotted around the site of interest.
I absolutely love this place! Away from the crowd, you can go there anytime you want. There are guided tours from OPW and you can access Cairn T when they are there. Theres a little car park and a bit of trekking up the hills. Very close to the Cairns you can take a five minute walk to the tourist centre. I hope this place will remain as it is.
Ive been to Newgrange, so nothing against that park, but Loughcrew is INCREDIBLE. In part because it is so unknown: when we were there, there was only one other person. Bit its also BEAUTIFUL. The trek up the hill is not easy, but it is so worth the time effort and energy. Its an amazing cairn that you can view and visit at your own pace. Go check it out! Its a great site!
A great spot any time of the year. Still hidden and you can sometimes have the place to yourself. OPW are there with the key until August so you can get inside the monument to see the 5000 year old carvings.
A secret gem! Not as touristy or crowded as newgrange but an amazing historical site. Quite a walk up the hill so wear proper shoes and have moderate fitness. Apparently you can go inside if you speak to someone down the hill but we missed this as we were just passing through and thought we would take a peek!
One of the best views in Ireland on a fine day. Apparently you can see 18 counties (more than half of Irelands 32from atop the hill. There is a campsite nearby for people who have campervans/tents.
Really nice rockcarvings in one well-preserved passage tomb surrounded by some plundered satelite tombs. Fantastic view to other hills and a general fantastic view - even in the rain. Somewhat of a climb up green hills.
