At this Mongolian chain eatery, diners cook meat & vegetables in broth at the table.
Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot, San Mateo in San Mateo
Description
Privilege
Fast and friendly service. The bone marrow broth and curry broth were both very flavorful. The lamb was tasty in both broths. The robot waiters are fun. Parking can be a hassle though.
MoreDont go here unless you want to be skipped in line. They are seating people at the bottom the reservation list when we waited over 50 minutes. Very sketchy.
MoreI wanted to give five stars if I didn’t have to experience one of the servers rolling his eyes at me when I asked to refill the watermelon. The ice cream cones were never refilled until we were done eating too. This happened two weeks ago, and I almost wanted to call the manager but gave up as my family didn’t like the fuss. I hope the servers get better educated and be more respectful to the customers and refill food promptly.
MoreSolid spot with so many good options and high quality. Service was fast and my group and I had our own little space which was great. Seating is spaced out and they have a soft serve machine and sauce bar. Exceptional meat quality. Will be back :)
MoreGreat food with great price and cool servers. Including the robot one.
Looks short staffed, only two staff on the floor for front of house, he worked really hard but seems stressed out. Fun to see the robot delivering orders. Food was just mediocre. Sauce section didn’t have lots of options. Only one fruit option was available.
MoreThis hot pot chain store is nothing special! The service is abysmal. I waited for more than 10 minutes to get my water cup refilled. Would not say last time for me, but close.
MoreGreat quality ingredients and really flavorful broths. The produce was especially fresh. Love that you can take your leftovers home with you. Plus soft serve ice cream included at the end!
MoreHaving been to the Happy Lamb in Cupertino numerous times, we arranged to meet family at the one in San Mateo. Pleasant surprise, its much nicer than the other one weve been going to. Same fantastic service, same good portions of food for us to cook ourselves. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed being there.
MoreGOD DAMN this food immaculate theres no words to describe it my ex took me here did we break up....yeah....but that food was fire 5/5 recommend and hopefully u dont get broken up either 😍🤞
MoreReally great hotpot place! Good quality meat and various other options to order from, and you can get unlimited soft serve and access to the sauce bar if you pay a few dollars, I think it was like $2. It was also really cool because they have really cute robots that help deliver food to tables!
MoreService may not be as good as when there’s less people, but taste is good. Yuan yang pot is not spicy, FYI.
MoreQuite expensive than I thought but general their beef are fresh and good. Broth are limited. They have nice view and setting
MoreGreat Service, food and price.
One of the best I have ever taste, went there many times and always yummy, everyone who I went with all of them gives good feedback, this will be my top list to take my guest , and my family, it’s really good
MoreVery basic hot pot place, bonus star because it has little robots that deliver meat to you. (they even blink!)
MoreFantastic and fresh hot pot in a nice modern setting!
Food can be 5 stars but you’re cooking it yourself so you can mess it up if you suck at cooking ;). The spicy is spicy so don’t get only spicy unless you’re serious. The ‘best of both worlds’ is usually the preference.Service has been really friendly and cool most of the time. 3.5 stars for service because despite their friendliness it can be tough to get a hold of someone. So we’re at a 4/4.5 star review. This past week I made a reservation for myself and my girlfriend’s family. 8 of us. We showed up a little early. They were clearly busy so we waited patiently. For 5 minutes, then 10. I tried to say hi to the gentleman who appeared to be running the door and was ignored. After 20 minutes, literally, of being completely ignored at the front of the restaurant with 8 people, we left. We went next door to Chef Sha, which was delicious, and they were gracious. So, 4/4.5 stars minus 2/2.5 for embarrassing me in front of my gf’s family. Not sure if I’ll return. Not for a while at least. 2 stars.
MoreThe food at the ayce bar is not fresh. The waitor is lukewarm. That is not the worst - our party of 5 paid $58 tips, because we didnt see they already included 18% tip. We were kind enough to add 18%, until I looked at the receipt today, I found out. I will tell everyone I know avoid going to this place.
MoreThey didn’t wash the spinach, they are a lot of soil on them
Our new go to spot for delicious hot pot dining for my family and I. First visit here was to celebrate my Moms birthday and we were all wowed by the food, service, and ambiance. Weve now visited this place multiple times most recently lastnight and its still as good as the first try! If hot pot dining is something youre into I highly recommend to try this place out, you will not be disappointed!
MoreThey have reopened after the name change from Little Sheep to Happy Lamb and the interior remodel. Inside looks updated and nice. I like that the brick wall was kept intact.Broth still delicious as ever along with their food quality. Service has been improved as there is now a robot that drives around to drop off food.Dinner definitely gets busy despite covid so come early or be prepared to wait.
MoreWe go there twice every monthIts my favourite placeYou get raw vegetables and a pot of soupWe take Half spicy and half originalHouse sesame bun is a good choiceThey serve hot tea before the food comes in which is not the best option and can be improvedOverall 5 stars coz i love it
MoreWhile not a hot pot connoisseur, my daughter and I had a lot of fun at this place. Our server was kind enough to explain how to order and what to do without making us feel stupid. Weve never seen robotic servers before, and that added to the novelty of eating here.
MoreLove the service robot. Its gimmicky, but really endearing.Food is great of course. The soup stocks are very flavorful, as well as the sauces. I loved the lamb and how well it pairs with everything. The table setup is good, too. They put more finesse than you usually see at a hot pot place. Recommend it to anyone who loves hot pot.
More2021 Update:We were very excited to see that renovations were complete and were happy to come back once we had our vaccines. We even spotted the robot waiters crossing around inside - how cool! But then we managed to get in, and right away there was a problem - they replaced the old tabletop resistive coil burners, which worked fine, with new induction coil burners sunk down into the tables, with vent fans. These induction coils emit an ear-splitting whine in the 15khz-19khz range depending on how high theyre turned up, which was louder than the (fairly noisybackground chatter in the restaurant. Trying to enjoy a meal while being assaulted by the same sound a dental drill makes was very difficult indeed. I got some earplugs from the pharmacy over the road, but they only barely made the noise tolerable, and made conversation a real chore.Sadly, because I have taken care of my hearing, I cannot comfortably eat at what used to be one of our absolute favourite restaurants. I will not be back, which is a pity because the food is still great. I can now only recommend this restaurant to people who are at least partially deaf.-------------Original review:Really nice place to eat. The food is phenomenal (six stars!), but the service can sometimes be a little inattentive or not strong with English (four stars!), so Id say this is a five-star place.Prices are not unreasonable if you dont go completely mad - keep in mind that the more expensive cuts of meat are still being *boiled*, so those fancy textures arent necessarily worth paying for. Our favourite meats are the Angus and the Fatty Beef, which are two of the cheaper options. We typically also get Broccoli and Napa Cabbage. We get the regular broth, as the spicy broth is beyond our tolerances. Those are the two gluten-free broth options, but there are about four more which we havent tried ourselves. We go here quite a bit, especially with close friends who dont mind dipping chopsticks straight into the communal pot! =)
MoreGreat food, great service. My daughter love when a robot brings the food from the kitchen.. love it
MoreThe new layout is awesome. It feels way more spacious and luxurious. This is by far the best hotpot chain. The safety precautions due to covid are nice. You must be wearing a mask when you walk in, but you can take it off after youve been seated. They make you sanitize your hands and take your temperature before seating you.
MoreReasonable price! Good attitude service. Meat dishe is in good position, except the 5 dollar Napa cabbage. That is a bit pricy for a small bowl
MoreWe had an extraordinary experience in this restaurant. We enjoyed the first-rate ambience and the menu. The staff are very attentive. I am glad we finally managed to try this restaurant.
MoreOne of my preferred places to grab some food. great location, neat, and excellent customer service. Highly recommended!
MoreI often take my friends to this place with my highest recommendations. I go to this restaurant often. This recommendation is always successful. The the food there is great and the crew is welcoming and cooperative. Every time we visit this place we pass a pleasing time. I warmly recommend this restaurant.
MoreHenry was very kind. Very considerate. The whole staff was sweet/polite. First time there. Party of 6. Went for my birthday. I got a special treat. Staff was very informative. I would recommend this to all my friends and family. It was about a 15 minute walk from Intercontental San Francisco. On the way back , we did some shopping.
MoreIm legitimately surprised at how popular this place is. It was recommended by a friend, but frankly the food was subpar and completely not worth the high price. Both broths we got (the original milk and the mushroom tomatowere "meh" at best, and only the most premium meat (worth ~$20 for 6 thin slicestasted good.Maybe the one time I visited was bad, but the only redeeming quality of this place (and the reason I am bumping up my rating to 2 starswas the excellent service. The servers were attentive, helpful, responsive, courteous, and very quick.
MoreVery good services in general, with Cathy, in particular, during our last visit.Cathy, the hostess and server, is amazingly cheerful and helpful, with a very positive customer service attitude. Very exemplary of all.Hot pot items are fresh and of very good quality. Environment is spacious and comfortable.Portion is not as generous as expected and price is still reasonable.Been there a few times, highly recommended.
MoreA very fun and delicious dining experience. We got the half-and-half broths, and found them both wonderful (they did do our spicy side mild, apparently, which was plenty for us). If four of you, I recommend the veggie and mushroom platters, then getting a few meats/tofu, and then a noodle dish for the end. Perfect.
MoreHere it is a la carte pricing as opposed to the more common all-you-can-eat price of most hot pot places. For most people, the price will end up more than an all inclusive price. Dont expect a cheap dinner. Quality was excellent, however, in ingredients and broth. On the other hand, the place lacks the choice of sauces and condiments that are practically a stable of hot pot places. There is, oddly enough, another hot pot place right next door. I have not been so cannot compare.
MoreWe came in today for lunch after a long time. Nothing has changed. The broth is still really yummy. We always take the half and half broth. The vegetables are fresh and the quantity of meat is a lot. We ordered tofu, oyster king mushrooms, American loaves beef and a premium lamb leg and ended up with a $45 bill for two. It was a very filling lunch and the quality is good.
MoreThe spicy broth is the best I have had so far at a hot pot place.
I used to come here a lot, and it’s not cheap. $$30, 40-50 to eat a la carte hotpot. Tuesday’s there’s a buffet which I’ve taken guests to or eaten myself. Today the hostess said it’s only for two people as I came by myself again. Discrimination and nowhere are there terms and conditions. What’s the difference? Can’t spare the $4 broth? Never coming here again. Good riddance. As an aside, I am reporting this establishment to the San Mateo city council for false advertising. I already phoned the manager and let him know about it. Sorry, but discrimination is discrimination.
MoreMet a friend for her birthday here while driving up the coast. We were looking for Mongolian BBQ but his was close enough. I’ve never had Mongolian food, but it was great! Very spicy, but not hot. You cook the meat in one of two broths (one spicy, one not spicy at all). Good stuff.
MoreService fairly attentive, good value servings, but table top hot plate not operating properly and we had to make do.... by moving soup pot around, complained, but no point as place was packed and moving was hopeless.......
MoreAnother very good hot pot spot. The spicy broth is delicious, and the food selection is plentiful. Service is a bit slower as it took a very long time for our 2nd order, but that is probably because the venue is packed. $10 corkage fee, which is reasonable with some fine wine.As for the meat, it was fresh. The veggies we ordered also were very fresh! We were all shoved into one round table, which was a bit tight, but nothing that we couldnt handle. Make sure to book early as this place gets very busy on weeknights also!
MoreThe most delicious hot pot broth in my opinion. Usually get some beef and lamb, and alot of the veggies; Napa cabbage, shitake, spinach and fried tofu are favorites. We usually end up taking a long time here, 1.5-2 hours...
MoreThe restaurant is very clean and serves fresh food. If you have never experienced hot pot before, this is the place to try it. They have a large selection to add to the broth that simmers on the induction cooktop. The staff are super helpful and very attentive.
MoreGood selection of meats and vegetables. Meats were cut thinly and tasted great! The vegetables were all fresh and came in reasonable portions. The only problem we had with the place are the service was very, very slow and only got slower after our initial order. We had to flag the waiter down multiple times while they were hanging out by the bar.
MoreThe food quality and quantity are both acceptable for the price, ask the server if u are ordering to much. They were kind enough to point that out for us. The hot sake is truly heart warming. Recommend the house meatball sampler/combo
MoreGreat place for hot pot! You get a lot of different options of meat and vegetables for your meal!
MoreThe wait was supposed to be 45 min but we were seated in less than 10 and received excellent fast service the whole time. We got the "half and half" broth which was the perfect amount of heat as the spicy broth is VERY spicy and get more so as the broth cooked down. Everything was delicious and they have a TON of a la carte options. Usually hot pot can be pricey but cocktails were $6-7 and we stuffed 3 people for about $60.
MoreDefinitely a fun experience. Its like Asian fondue if youve never done hot pot before. The hot broth is very spicy! I enjoyed getting half and half spicy and non-spicy broth so I could mix it. Its easy to order too much food here, but they are good about letting you take it home with you. We were there very early for dinner (before they openedand there was already a line forming! Not sure how busy it gets, but based on that experience you should expect a wait.
