Lissan House - Historical place museum in Omagh, United Kingdom
A favourite place ✨️
Wonderful old house, estate and grounds that oozed history and memories of times gone by. You could imagine the house in all its grandeur, full of vibrancy and class with many stories told and forgotten. Like a monument to begone days it survives with some parts more lost than others. Considering its not a national trust property and relies on volunteers for finance and practical services ,its a lovely testament to the special place it holds for the people of Cookstown and beyond. Really enjoyed my time here walking round all the different aspects of the house, like the stables ,gardens and house itself. Definitely worth a drive up the long lane to experience the magic of a piece of history. The Victorian age of wonder for the gentry, just like Toms midnight garden, I felt like Id stepped back in time.
I only found out about this place over a year ago and wanted to see inside the house and learn about its history. The tour lasted 2 hours but was mostly telling us about the painting. Its not possible to view the third floor but you do see the kitchen. Most of the tour is focus on the history of the lady who last owned the estate and who left the house to the Trust. I had more questions Id liked to have know but never learned through the tour. There alot of out building but most have or almost falling down. Well worth a visit to walk the grounds which is free. Its £7 for adults for the tour that only runs during the summer at 1pm and 3pm the lane to here from the main road is narrow with small passing places but no height restriction and is about half a mile long. Small tarmac carpark and a slightly larger gravel carparking. Public toilets open 24hrs with outdoor water tap for filling pups water bowl. If you have a dog then great place. Small river running through the estate.
Many thanks to Robert for a very interesting history tour at Lissan on a hot Saturday 13th August 2022 today and for a very pleasant day out! What are you doing next weekend? It s holiday time so get outside! And if you are local its practically in your own back yard and just waiting for you to discover and explore.Take a walk down memory lane with company and a guide to tell you interesting facts about this lovely place.Enjoy looking back and being transported to a different time zone here at lovely Lissan. The next tour is Sunday 21st August so make a note in your diary to come along and bring a friend. Cost is £5 and it is an opportunity for you to contribute to the upkeep of this wonderful place. But In return it is an opportunity for you to listen to a two hour running commentary on Lissan past with friends in such idyllic surroundings.
Beautiful place for a walk
Magnificent historic house. Excellent wedding venue. The guided tour is well worth it.
I found this place to be magical. My friend and I walked her dog along 1 of the many paths and discovered some magical things. The pictures should tell most of the story. The house was not open that day. Good carpark, excellent toilets, ordinary and disabled. There are picnic tables and plenty of bins. Lots of notice boards and info to read. House is open but not everyday. My advise check out website. Im not a photographer but tried to capture as much as possible as clear as possible. There were dog bowls of water provided. I thought the place was well worth the visit
Great place to walk around
Step back in time in this glorious old family home, lovingly kept by a dedicated team of volunteers. Its steeped in history dating back to the 1600s and is set back on its own land. Full of all period furniture throughout its 3 floors. The grand staircase winds up to all 3 levels leading onto spacious landings with corridors leading of to its many rooms. A lovely day out to walk the forest trails and explore the house itself.
Brilliant house and find
Brilliant and a little gem .the house is stunning no frills but does require help in keeping it in shape their is a trust but run by volunteers the local council could do more to help n my mind to keep it going .it was closed when we went but one of the volunteers offered us a tour it was fantastic just the two of us with the personal touch .I recommend to visit to get this house restored to were it should be its your heritage and history local council take note .ten stars
Lovely grounds for a walk, family friendly and rich with history, nice to watch the seasons change and all the beautiful colours here
First visit to this really quirky old house. Loved it. The estate has a lovely rivervwalk and lots of picturesque, crumbling outbuildings. The house oozes shabby chic charm and is wonderfully preserved full of interesting bits and pieces. You really get to step back in time. The tour we had was relaxed and we were allowed to take photos and get up close to everything. We loved it and want to go back again for afternoon tea.
Love our walks around here. New trial makes it all the more fun
Went to fairy trail very well done really enjoyed it beautiful grounds
Lissan House is a rare, untouched piece of history. It feels as if the last owner has just walked out the door and has beautiful features of various periods. The tour is phenomenal, I would highly recommend. The tour guide was a wealth of knowledge. For such a small fee, I would recommend anyone in the area visiting to go on the tour.
Listen to the birds singing, water flowing, explore the tree lined paths and enjoy a picnic on the lawn after a tour of the house..
Always beautiful around Lissan! Especially good at the weekends when the coffee stand is there. They appear to be doing work around the courtyard and walled garden at the minute
Lovely location for a walk in the sunshine
Lovely forest to walk be great when house is restored
Wonderful walks and trails with lots to explore including the main house. Currently closed due to covid atm
Beautiful place, with more investment would be a true treasure!
Had a great tour yesterday with a lovely man and his granddaughter (cant remember their names 🙈)This house is spectacular and the history behind it is so intriguing. The volunteers are wonderful local people who want this estate restored to its former glory and really rely on the proceeds of these tours or donations. Its a must see i will definitely be back in the future I only wish i lived closer i would definitely be volunteering to help in any way I could. Thankyou
Great tour and great groundsRely on peoples donations
Brilliant tour by lovely volunteers. Got to see so much of the house which was adorned with all the original artefacts and not the usual period objects. Wonderful day out thank you.
Pretty much closed up at the mo. Still a beautiful setting though. Watch out for the cows!
closed Tuesdays and wednesday but doesnt state that anywhere on their website
Went here with a group of people to invest paranormal activity and we werent disappointed. The house itself was magnificent and staff were lovely. Quite a few things happened during our time there. Really enjoyed it and cant wait to get back again to investigate it some more.
400 years of family history in this privately run stately home. It came second in a BBC Restoration series, shame because it could have benefited from the money. Do take a tour, it is a delight!
Beautiful house! Recommend the tour and the tea room. Great brownies
Lovely home full of history and quirks, deffs worth a visit
There is something so special about here it just draws u back time after time. Lovely tea room set in its original time. You can get a tour inside the house. The staff is lovely. There is a wee shop also with different bits and pieces in it. And the grounds are super to walk round. And there is also several times a year tours rounds the grounds. A special place well worth the visit.
Great old location in need of all the public support it can get. Go along and have a look.

Amazing house, friendly, informative staff. Well worth a visit, I will definitely be back.
Lovely place for a short, quiet walk, with or without kids and/or dogs. Well signposted footpaths and informative boards. Usually muddy, but wellies only obligatory if jumping in puddles is on the agenda.
Lovely autumn walk around it..but the house was all locked up so there were no bathroom facilities
Great day out hosts were a wealth of knowledge which was great and the icing on the cake literally was amazing in the tea room recommend a visit alone just for the cakes !!!!! Easier ways to get to the house Google took us a weird way but got there eventually!
Great place for a concert, hopefully many more will follow 👍👍
Great tea room. Well worth the visit
I visited Lissan house for the first time with my family recently. The grounds and walks are stunning. The house is full of character and personality that would remind you of that seen on the tv drama Downton Abbey. Hospitality and service were excellent.
Absolutely brilliant, good on yous to go without national trust.
Very scenic place with plenty of walking route to enjoy. Nice river flowing through the grounds to walk alongside
