Largo da Sé, 1100-585 Lisboa, Portugal, Evora
Earthquakes have led to this cathedral being rebuilt many times in different architectural styles.
Great cathedral worth to see in Lisbon, near Sao Jorge Castle. The entry ticket costs 5 euros for an adult.
The vault area of this cathedral has an amazing gold-gem in-crusted piece. And getting close to the amazing stained glass window does also radiate with spiritual power. Well worth a visit.
very beautiful cathedral with a large collection from earlier periods and a great view, a must see place in Lisboa
The view of the suspension bridge and part of Lisbon street from the top was quite nice. I also liked the details of the ceiling in one of the rooms of the church. The church was quite bigger than I imagined it to be. Worth a visit.
12th Century Cathedral, must see. Follow the road up to the Castle afterwards. Worth all the walking uphill.
Definitely worth a visit. I’m addition to being a beautiful cathedral, it contains an impressive collection of ceremonial relics, and a lovely view of the city from the upper floors.
Nice collection, compare to other churches in Europe I didnt find it worth the price, but still affordable and nice area with cheap souvenirs .Architecture is beautiful and view from second floor is nice.
Beautiful cathedral with stunning architecture and historical artifacts inside. Good view from the upper balcony and a great place to watch the trams go by!
Cool place, not as tall as you’d expect, but definitely worth checking out.
Wonderfully kept 12th century cathedral, a real jump back to the Medieval age.
The Sé is located at a very photogenic location. You can take beautiful pictures with the iconic tramcars passing the Sé in the background. Its not only a church but also a museum with plenty of unique pieces.
This area was probably the highlight of my trip. The district this cathedral in is absolutely beautiful. If you are in Lisbon then definitely make some time to visit the Alfama district. Beautiful views of the city, great cafes and beautiful architecture.
Wow! There is some really interesting stuff here from relics of saints to ecleastical gloves and ostrich fans!
Really good architecture. Unfortunately the external facade is not very well mantained
It is not a must but anyway I recommend to visit this quiet place and enjoy silence of walls. You can find a lot of sacred paintings. Nice view from above on Tag river. You need to pay 5 or 6 euro entrance.
Hi The cathedral is great and beautiful. The architecture is historical. A lot of things to see. We really enjoyed the visit. The staff was friendly and organised.
Excellent cathedral with great architectural work. The stained glass is fantastic. Its a bit hot inside during summer time (35+ in August when I visited). Remember to take a photo at the front door with the tram and the cathedral together!
A beautiful and very special place steeped in so much history. Lots to see and information readily available. A stunning serene place of worship.
Very beautiful, huge , big and must visit place
Great monument, one of the oldest in town. 5 Euro a tour around it, well worthy. A museum is organized in some rooms, high escaliers with a great view.
A lovely gothic style Cathedral - along the way you’ll see some information signs but extra given to you in a booklet with your €5 entry fee.No photos allowed in the treasury - but here you will see great artefacts, clothing and paintings.
Beautiful cathedral with its high domed ceiling which you can see from the gallery with the rose window behind you. You can also go outside and walk beneath the window. Its a bit annoying that theres no one way system in place as its a bit of a tight squeeze with people going in and out but its likely that the cathedral just isnt designed to make that work. There are also relics from various Saints and an ornate ceiling to admire. For all that there is to see, the admission fee is very reasonable.
I do like raw cathedrals, have seen many around the world. These one didnt made an impression on me.
Lisbon Cathedral, simply “Sé”, suffers from not having a large churchyard to give it the status of a great church. The interior is cute but not exciting. Since its the cathedral, its worth visiting
Breathing Historical Beauty outside. I arrived very early and walked outside, all the way round this magnificent Monument. A great experience without having the chance of visiting the inside or cloister. Just imagining that 800- 900 years ago there were coming any goings around these walls and cobble streets by Great Men and Women of God...Saints...Praying inside and outside these walls. Awesome!
Se, as its popularly called, dates back to 12c. It was built by orders of Portugal first king Afonso Henrique after he defeated the Moors and took over the city from them.It stands proudly for almost 900 years at the foot of Alfama historic district in its fortress like Romanesque architecture. However, with all respects to its age, Lisbon has several much more beautiful and more interesting Churches to visit which are free btw, while Se is paying.
There really is no reason to visit this church if you have ever seen any gothic church before. as a matter of fact its more Romanesque than it is gothic. It is a small, dark, dungeon-like edifice that is as plain on the outside as it is on the inside. It now costs 4 Euro to enter, which is an outrage and another deterrent for entering this singularly unimpressive temple. I mean, even the rose window is off center... Dont go out of your way.
This cathedral, also known as Santa Maria Maiors Church was built in 1147 by D. Afonso Henriques but wasnt the first church in the same place. Its history is fascinating, Google it. 😎
Cathedral of St. Mary Major is the oldest church in the city, built in 1147. National monument since 1910.
The Lisbon Cathedral is a monument to the post-earthquake state of Lisbon, Portugal. A true engineering marvel of the Portuguese renaissance. Entering provides amazing views of city, but not the best. It has a large museum inside filled with lots of majorly important items from the roman catholic church such as popes clothing, ancient biblicial books, golden crosses, challices, etc. The cathedral is also filled with countless paintings that are hundreds of years old. They are something to marvel at themselves
Admission wasn’t free but was cheap, and it was beautiful and peaceful.
Beautiful Cathedral. Great exhibition and views across the city.
This cathedral has some great architectural work. The treasury has a lot of interesting relics and other pieces. The rose window has beautiful stained glass that you can see up close. The sculptural work on top of the numerous tombs is very impressive. We are excited to return once the archaeological excavation of the cloisters has finished as it should bear some incredible findings.
Cheap to tour, worth visiting in the middle of many other worthwhile stops.
It is not free as google maps says, and it is not worth paying to enter there. There is a small “museum” where you are not allowed to take photos, but the “museum” is not interesting at all, it took me 10 minutes to go through the whole place and I was pretty disappointed.
Really beautiful 😻 i am not religious but it is worth the visit to see the art and architecture of this cathedral!
Wonderful spot for reflection and prayer in the heart of Lisbon. Important to note that there is a 4€ unlike what google maps suggests.Despite the dissapointment of the fee, the cathedral is still a beautiful building, with different chapels to pray in, and a viewing balcony showing specatucar views of the city.Only a stones throw away from tram and bus links, its very well connected to the rest of the city and is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Lisbon!
Looks great from outside but didn’t go inside
Cool building for sure and makes sense why this is Lisbon’s cathedral. It’s impressive although not as great as the ones in Spain. It’s worth checking this spot out though
First of all, this place is NOT "free" like Google maps claims. But the entry fee is only €4, and probably worth a look around. Its an amazing structure. They have a balcony view from above the front door (under the circular stain glass windowout to the street. On the other side of the stain glass window is the balcony looking down been to the pews. When the organ is playing it sounds amazing from the balcony above (I guess its the way the sound travels within the building). On the second floor is a fascinating treasury museum, but they dont allow you to take any pictures in that area, so Im sorry I dont have any to include with my review. After visiting the upper levels, you can come down the stairs and walk around behind the front area. There are several shrine rooms with various religious displays.I think I spent maybe 45 minutes to an hour to see most of what was on display. And, as with most of the tourists sites, theres plenty of souvenir and food shops around and down the hill from this cathedral.
The Cathedral is one of the oldest monument in Lisbon. A beautiful example of Romanesque architecture
Amazing how old this place is, built from 1100s to 1300s. Interesting museum of some catholic artifacts. Building is just so grand and impressive for its age. Location is great on the way to the castle , old moorish quarter and scenic overlook
Amazing and historical experience that you can never forget, beautiful
The “Sé de Lisboa” is one of the most iconic building in the city. It is located in the beginning of the “bairro alto” and is easily accessible by tram (highly recommended trip, by the way)You can visit the interior to see its wonderful architecture and very peaceful atmosphere. On the second floor there are some windows and a balcony where you can admire some beautiful views of the city.
Passed this church several times before but never have chance to visited, sometimes there are grand wedding ceremony. Finally visited it today when I walked down from the view point above. Free to see the church but €4 to see their treasures. Interesting points to me: 1. It is the oldest church in Lisboa; 2. It is where Antonio de Lisboa received baptizado; 3. On the wall of stairs to the treasure room you can still see Sinal da Cruz -- a mark of Cross which is believed made by St Antonio to dispel devils.
Very nice building. The interior is not as decorated as the Italian churches, but has a very nice spirit. Its free to enter, but you have to pay to go up.
Shows the rich history of the cathedral within the city and how it has survived many earthquakes and changed over the years. Would have been good if you could walk all the way to the top, but still nice views of Lisbon and the water from inside.
Full of mystery, sculptures, painting and historical artifacts. It cost about 5 euro to visit museum and photography is forbidden there. The rest of the cathedral is free to visit.
Lovely ancient church but the cloister is closed. I think its probably still worth a visit but I was looking forward to seeing the cloister. They have an interesting collection of 17 and 18th century robes and reliquaries. Inside the seu, I think the 12th century sensibility (possibly even a smidge Romanesqueis still apparent in the architecture. It feels weirdly tall which I found unique. There are several interesting medieval sarcophagi that you can admire up close. It will be great once they finish the excavations and you can see the cloister, the iron age, the Roman, and the Muslim layers.
Only visited from the outside since we got there right after it closed. Nice place to take photos. Great area to explore on foot.
