Lilongwe Wildlife Centre - Wildlife Refuge in Machinga, Malawi
This is indeed a unique place. Orphans or injured animals from all over malawi are recovered here.Vets and volunteers work together to take care of those animals until they can return back to Wildlife if it’s possible, or kept safe inside of the wildlife center. It’s important to say that visitors can take long walks all around the park in paths signed with different colors but none of those pass inside the clinical zone, so visitors are not allowed to see the injured animals, they can just meet monkeys or other not dangerous animals, visible in the bush from the path.
The animals are on reserve so there arent available for viewing. Theres a cozy restaurant /café there and a small arts shop. There are trails available for joggers or just long walks.
Make sure you get everything you need before going the management aren’t really helpful
No animals these days but lovely walks through the forest. Slightly marred by the new road construction going on around
Today we went for a walk on the trails at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. What a beautiful spot of nature right in Lilongwe!!!There was three trails, of different lengths and not tough. The signage for each trail was very well done, making it easy to get around. The red trail heads down to the Lilongwe River at different points and seating/picnic areas. If you want to stop and absorb the nature, read a book of have a picnic. We saw a fair amount of birds, some monkeys and a few small antelope. Crocodiles have also been spotted in this river and there are a few signs telling you to be aware of them. Hyenas are seen to walk along the Lilongwe River at night but not sure if you would spot any here in the day time. This was a lovely way to spend an hour or more and could be an easy trail run at the beginning or end of the day. This place is children/family friendly. The Maravi cafe is to the left as you enter the Centre. It has a lovely menu with options for Vegetarians and vegans. There is also a small shop straight ahead as you enter with lots of local art and crafts for sale and a playground for kids. They are open every day of the week from 8am to 5pm. There is a small entrance fee to go towards conserving this space.I will come back and explore more
Quite amazing, beware though as after rains in the wet season paths can be very slippery and wet
There were no animals besides monkeys. The only bird we saw was an Eagle. This place is more of an animal hospital according to what one of the guides told me.
Watch the show all the time and would love to visit
It has a lot of animals but the problem is that, its a small centre
Beautiful place within the city to relax and enjoy well conserved wildlife.
Nice place to spend some time.Very sorry for the animals
Good restaurant and events hosting place
Jungle within the town.....best place for kids ...they have a nature walk ...nice restaurant... amphitheatre....swings etc.
Nice atmosphere and good food. The Managers took their time to go around and personally greet everyone, which was a nice Touch. I was there on a Sunday where they had live Band playing. Only Suggestion for that is to play more local music and not old Covers.
Really charming and cozy place! All surroundings just make you feel like in kind of little jungle, or harmony park where are many possible trails and little ways for a walk, where monkeys are everywhere around you playing with each other. From the part of different animals, they do not have plenty of them, only few in a time, depends when you will arrive and or you will be lucky. Why? Because it is sanctuary (hospital for animalsso most of them are coming and going.Staff members work really good! They are kind, helpful and always welcoming! There is bar/restaurant where prices are high (europeanones, but around the area you can find picnic areas where you can bring your own food and drinks. If you are in Lilongwe I really recommend to you to visit Lilongwe Willife Centre!
Beautiful trails, lovely cafe and recuperating rescued animals.
This review is the café at the reserve rather than the reserve itself. It serves varied and interesting drinks and snacks in a beautiful garden atmosphere, a tiered leafy open-air area hung with pastel bunting. A little on the expensive side but served with warmth. Not suitable for those who cant manage steps.
Has an absolutely wonderful bar, serving great food and drinks. Often have events here as well, which are a delight.
I visited a friend that has a NGO just at the gate of the park. He lives there to help the community, give them job, food and clothes.Every night we have been there the elephants 🐘 from this park went out, broke the fences and damage the fields of those very poor people that struggle to have enough food to live with there families. Those people even risk their lives to protect their harvest !!!After having brought this matter many a time to the park they still didn’t do anything to protect those people around the park. It’s really unacceptable !
Great, short walk through the wildlife centre for about 4000. The guide was kind and full of information about the animals during our approx. one-hour walk. Itll just be luck if you come when they have more animals around to see. Animals do come and go for different reasons. Check out the Fusion cafe inside for coffee, free WiFi, and friendly owner.
Did a guided tour so informative and laid back. Planning to do it again.
Its a nice environment, the food at the cafe is great, the monkeys certainly keep you on edge.
Good place for family, however there isnt alot of Wildlife.
Before walk around, I tried to eat for lunch. The atmosphere is totaly different with outside of the Life centre. The double espresso and steak salad are very gorgeous and make me very excited. But when T-bone steak had come, I realized it is not the Michelin star restaurent. It was not mid-rare, totally charcoal. It gave me a certain lesson Do not order the steaks in Malawi, NEVER
Nice tour guide and easy walk through
They are doing a superb job under difficult circumstances. As an aside the "Fusion" restaurant is the best food in Lilongwe.
This is a nice place to go when you want to embrace nature deep in the heart of the city
Great environment and good view of wildlife
Best place for kids. Adventure activities available for kids
Interesting little place, I like it. Lots of monkeys. Playground for kids. No lions anymore but I saw: monkeys, baboon, python, alligators, a wild deer...I like the walking trail set upAttractive eating area.
Great and serene environment for the wounded and orphaned animals
Very cool place to get some rest, natural environment, waking up to to seeing the monkeys come out from the bush & play, has a theme of the Flintstones cartoon setting....all brown wood design gives the rooms & hotel in general a unique experience......fast internet connectivity....... enjoyed my stay here.....tops my list for now.
Don’t visit expecting your typical zoo. It’s about education for people, and rehab for animals. And to this end they achieve fantastically. To add to it, some great guides, beautiful walks and scenery, a great little cafe’ and some interesting animals!Well worth a visit
Lovely and relaxed area to chill out and have a drink. They do lovely coffees and the staff are very friendly. The tour of the animal sanctuary is also good
The Cafe there is amazing. Great aura that it sets off
Baboons, Monkey, Aligator can only be visible. Not sure if others are available or hiding behind the bushes.
A nice day out. They do such an amazing job rescuing animals and then once able releasing them back into the wild.
Taking care of distressed animals can be a painstaking experience. The staff here pride in being that good foster parent t such wild animals. Raring them to be able to adapt and be ready for the wild life again. The place has nice greenery. Makes your walk such a soothing experience as you listen to the varying stories of each animal under their care.Serves nice meals too.On a good day you can be spoilt to good Malawian music.
Friendly place to go. Lovely owner and staff. Great for meals and coffee
Great restaurant and great staff...
Lovely place for a Sunday afternoon lunch... Very relaxing
Nice cafe to sit and work or just chill at. Lovely setting.
very nice place. many animals to see and guides are very friendly. best time to go is when feeding the animals as most come out to eat and you get a good view of them.
It doesnt cost you much to get inside as there are not that many animals to see. I saw a lot of monkeys and baboons as well as a python. Its not as exciting as what you think. But great mission though
Terrible service, not child friendly pathways while they have lots of children visitors. The lady managing is also rude, when we raised the safety issue for kids, she was rejective.
Beautiful gardens and knowledgeable guides. They do great work rescuing African animals from around the world
Midst of green. Excellent ambience and great view with good food. Must visit for romantic couples.
Great animal sanctuary and a nice place to bring kids to learn about wildlife. Guided tours every hour. Good variety of animals to see. Nice childrens playground as well.
The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a hub for everything that is wildlife protection in Malawi. From ivory stock burning to manifestations to the safe keeping of sick and wounded animals. The only of its kind in Malawi, its very important this place is often visited and thus supported to keep them going.Pay a small fee to get in and do the lovely walking trails to see all sorts of animals.Take your kids to the awesome playground and sit back and relax with a coffee or milkshake. Great restaurant, they serve wild pizza!
Decent playground for the kids. Havent been on the tour yet. Food is ok, large portions. We had a good experience one day and not so great the next with the service. Pizza chef is out on Tuesday and pizzas run out by early afternoon also. We missed em both times.
