A treat if youre looking to learn about Helena.
Relaxing easy-going fun. History and sights for all ages
If you have a chance, GO! A very relaxing, historical, and knowledgable trip about Helena.
Took my mother on a tour and it was great! She loved it!
This is now my go-to activity suggestion for anyone wanting to get a feel for Helena. Great tour, tons of cool history and the route took us through really awesome areas that I hadnt seen exploring on my own. We had a great driver, super knowledgeable and friendly. He came and had a brief conversation with just about every passenger as he checked/punched our tickets, which really elevated our experience. Two things to note for anyone going soon:1On the weekend it looks like the parking was fairly easy. But during the workday this road and the parking lots are pretty full, so you will definitely need to review the parking info on the website.2It seemed like the timing of the descriptions of the things we were seeing were geared towards the middle/back of the train. We were at the front and felt like we were getting the info a tad late and spent a lot of time turning around to look at things. So, while we still had an absolute blast where we were, if youve got the choice Id probably suggest trying for seats a little further back.
Great tour knowledgeable tour guide with great sense of humor
I have lived here for 41 years and never took to Tour Train in Helena. It was great to listen to our Tour Train Guide he was wonderful ❤
Love the train Buffalo Bill is a friend and coworker from the schools in Helena really a great tour guide.
The tour train has small wooden seats, clearly designed for two small or medium-sized people. We booked in advance for two adults, 3 children, and 1 infant. (Clearly 3 seats worth of people). The driver asked if we could condense, so that they could squeeze more people who had not made reservations and were on a wait list onto the tour, pushing us into two seats, and having two children who are much too large on our laps. It was hot, and uncomfortable for both the children and adults. They also did the same to the group next to us, and pushed 5 people into a clearly 4 person seating arrangement. Their child was around the same age as ours (approx 8 years old), and was drenched in sweat, and clearly uncomfortable, as were the adults. This is not child friendly, as they seem to think that large children should be in an adults lap in 85 degree weather, even though you pay for a seat for them.Overall the tour would have been lovely and relaxing, had it been adults only, and they shouldnt charge for 8 year olds if they arent going to be allowed a seat.
Booked well in advance for a morning train ride, Buffalo Bryon was a delight for my train loving grandson and history buff Daughter-by-love!!! We old folks lsrnd new facts above the quaint town weve called home for decades!! Highly recommended!! Book early; book often!!
Terrific tour guide. I believe his name was Nick
This was a great tour with lots of history. With it being an hour it was the perfect length, and gave us an idea for places to go back to and check out in Downtown Helena. Our conductor was a history teacher and did a wonderful job of mixing landmarks, history, and current setup of the area.
Great tour! Brought friends along that were Newbies; I was on the tour 20 some years ago...still informative and MAYBEbrcause I forgot too much! LOL Young and old all gleaned from our VERY knowledgable Conductor, "Buffalo Bryan" who also is a retired History class teacher!
This is easily the most fun you can have on a miniature train. I say that having ridden at least four and there cant be that many around the world right? Our train conductor Matt aka Skid was fantastic, he drove the hell out of that train and provided top notch banter the whole time. I learnt about Helena, I learnt about Montana, and most importantly I learnt about myself. My only regret was not doing the tour first thing on arrival because like a fool I went last minute before leaving only to learn about dozens of awesome places I didnt know existed!Dont sleep on this gem, or on the train itself, get around it, get amongst it and get into it, its fun and informative for all ages, youll love it.
The tour guide , I think his name was Matt, was wonderful . He shared alot of information and I live in helena and learned some things. He was fun and upbeat. We took 2 of our grandchildren and they loved it . I highly recommend it!
We don’t normally sign up for kitschy tours. However, our B&B host highly recommended this tour. We are so glad that we did go. In the space of an hour we learned a great deal about the history & geography of Helena on the History Train tour. At only $10 each (seniorsit was a bargain, and highly entertaining. We also got half-price admission to the Natural History Museum, which was a surprisingly well-curated history of the Helena area. It focused on “native” artist Charles Russell, but added a fascinating collection of “People of Montana” portraits by artists from early 1800s to current time. And that was before we entered the Native American History rooms. I could have spent double the time there! A bargain!
Very nice tour of this beautiful town! Many gorgeous historic buildings! $10 for seniors, $11 for adults. Very much worth it!!!
This tour was fun and informative! We loved cruising around town in the train and the guide, "Shotgun", provided lots of fun facts. Highly recommend for all ages!
Grandparents and children both enjoyed the tour around Helena. Make sure you show up early if you want a good selection of seats; we arrived at 1015am for the 11am tour on a September weekday. There is a trailer with souvenirs and snacks that are open before and after the ride.
Awesome!!! My ribs hurt after the ride from laughing so hard and I learned so much about historic Helena! I will recommend this to everyone!
Fun little tour around Helena. Tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. Had a lovely time.
Wonderful tour of Helena! I enjoyed the train ride and seeing parts of Helena I probably wouldn’t have seen if it weren’t for the tour. Great for all ages.
Had a fantastic tour with Matt I grew up in Helena and have taken the tour numerous times since I first went with my grandma when I was 4. I learn something every time and if there is something NOT to miss when you visit Helena in the summer the tour train is it!
It was so much fun! The trolley was well kept and clean. The tour was super informative and our tour guide has lots of interesting facts about Helena! It was well worth it! We loved it and would do it again!
Matt, was great! Our host and train engineer. Very knowledgeable about Helenas history. Great personality. Matt, good luck in Conrad!
Fun for all ages! The 1 and 3 year old loved the train, whistles, and waving to people, and the adults loved learning Helenas history. Our conductor (i forget his name, I apologizewas fantastic and funny. Kept the history interesting and was very knowledgeable. We will be back!
Friendly owners and staff. They go out of their way to make sure you enjoy Helena and your experience. Lots of amazing information and facts.
Fun! Kid friendly. Lots of interesting and cute stories from driver. She walked down the train beforehand getting to know her audience. She even gathered local coffee recommendations for us.
Great tour from very informative history teacher conductor. Its about an hour showing some of the buildings and people that shaped Helena, Montana and our countrys history. Learned a lot on this tour and recommend doing it if youre in the area with some time. Definitely worth the money!
Fantastic tour, great people. Learned a ton of the history of Helena, definitely worth a ride with them!
Enjoyable way to see the town of Helena. Matt (Conductorwas informative and had a good sense of humor. Would take family on the ride again when they come to town.
Awesome tour, good to see a lot of things that you dont normally see. Plus its great to know more about the citys history. Totally awesome. Would recomend.
Tour was great way to see Helena and get a history lesson! Highly recommend.
The tour was timely and the employees were helpful. We were able to purchase tickets online. The tour conductor was so friendly and sweet. She talked to my husband and I, as well as our children. It was a delight to them to be included in the conversation and addressed individually. You want to arrive about 30 minutes early to have more seating options and park easily. It begins next to a museum where you can further explore Montanas history. The tour guide is funny, charasmatic, and entertaining throughout the train ride. It is open to the elements so plan for weather. We had originally purchased tickets for a rainy, blustery day but that tour was cancelled and we were offered a refund or to reschedule. I really appreciate the family feel and friendliness of the entire operation.Whether this is your first time in Helena, you recently moved here, or this is your home town, the train tour offers gems of stories and facts to all audiences.
Great way to see the best sites in Helena!
Excellent day to go. The conductor was friendly and informative. It was an awesome day for us. Even with social distancing everyone able to seat comfortably. We sat up front and had such a great ride....Thanks bunches

Highly recommend! Very informative an hour tour on the train. My family enjoyed the beautiful historic building and houses and their stories!
A very enjoyable way to see Helena. The "driver" aka train engineer provided almost non-stop commentary sharing history and tidbits of trivia about the buildings we were driving by. My daughter was waving at people as we passed them and most would wave back. Made us feel very welcome.
Fun and inexpensive way to tour the city. Lots of information about the history of the area, and views of historic old houses and other buildings in the area. The driver was very entertaining.
Took the kids and they had a blast. The staff was very friendly and the tour was full of interesting information. Not to mention the beautiful cool stuff you get to see.
Was well worth the price. Conductor was well informed on history of Helena. Enjoyed the trip around the town. Reccomend it to anyone can find time to get to Helena.
My girlfriend and I rode the tour train on our anniversary, and it was a hit! Short (1 hourand sweet. The conductor was friendly and entertaining. I would recommend it :)
What a great drive around town in a train! Family who runs this great ride are some of the nicest people...takes you thru all the old mansions & stories of the Gold Rush daze in MT history.Must do in Helena...right by the Capitol building & museum.
Went with the family. We had a great time. The kids enjoyed the ride while the wife and I were entertained by the tour itself.Lots of interesting history in the capital city of Montana. Things Ive never heard of about the city I was born in. So even if you love in Helena its worth a ride.
We were happy to be able to take the tour. The 2 year old with us was so excited to ride the "train". The couple who sold and took the tickets were very pleasant and cordial. It was a chilly day and they graciously supplied us with blankets. The tour guide was very knowledgeable.
Strongly recommend taking the tour if you’re in Helena. It was a quick and easy way to see around the city. They show you all the popular spots, give you some local history, and provide some humour along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was AWESOME! The conductor was very informative, funny, and personable with all the passengers. He took time to show his patrons the train, take photos and cater to everyones needs. It was definitely an experience that our 2 year old son loved, he even let him ring the bell!Loved learning more about our capital and seeing the beautiful architecture in our capital.
