Cartagena, Cartagena Province, Bolivar, Colombia, Cartagena
The cells of these former 18th-century dungeons now feature shops selling colorful souvenirs.
Dont bother, just a row of shops selling tacky souvenirs.
Staff were very good. Ceviche excellent. AC was definitely appreciated.
If you are looking for generic souvenirs this is the place, not my kind of place tough.
We went there for our first trip to Cartagena. Our friends want to get some local souvenirs. We have found some interesting stuffs there. The price was very competitive. Even cheaper than small shops outside along the street. We ended up going there twice.
Not all the shops were open everyday
Great historical place for artsy crafts and souvenirs
Nice shops for artisan goods from the region, the prices appear to be standard, and although it can be expensive, I think the work of some of the items is worth the extra money.
I found the gifts I needed here. Some of the shops were junk, but there are some really artists here as well.
Interesting building with nice arches. - 2022/08/18
With forty-seven arches and twenty-three domes, Las Bóvedas (The Vaultsis easily one of the mostarchitecturally interesting structures within the old city walls and was in fact, the final structure built.Constructed at the turn of the 18th century by theSpanish engineer Antonio de Arevalo, Las Bóvedas was originally intended as a munitions store for the fort and the local garrison. According to local legend, it was also eventually used as a dungeon during the civil war and due to its close proximity to the sea, prisoners would often have water to their knees at high tide. The structure is situated in the San Diego district, along the city wall between Santa Clara and Santa Catalina. These days, its an excellent place to find souvenirs. The area is absolutely buzzing with hawkers selling everything from trinkets to hammocks and paintings.
Very nice please, you can buy souvenirs and walk on the Cartagenas wall from there. It is also a safe place to walk wander around.
Very crowded and the stores are repetitive. Lots of sellers of "real Cuban cigars" at a price that scream fake.Having said all that, Las Bovedas is very colorful and worth going once.
Looking for souvenirs and local crafts? Well make sure you visit this spot. It used to hold prisoners, so.much history
Great little market in the back walls of the city. In the middle of the shops row you will find a little gem with real artesanías, great vintage salsa posters and great Agua de Jamaica juice!
Very nice , small and delicate. Not a bad place for some cute souvenirs
Some nice things for sale, so a good place to get yourself some souvenirs. Some stores charge outrageous prices though
Over 20 shops with all kinds of souvenirs. Pretty good prices but many of the shops are repetitive. Also limited food and drink choices. Nice to stop by but not a must.
This place is so nice and all the gift shops are really nice. Check out my little set up
La bóveda #4 was overpriced as we visited the other shops. Also noted giving us a "discount" for being national tourists. Prices should be the same for all. Discount was not a discount based on market research. Also little bags were $10,000 pesos more here than a few doors down.
Cute shops with lots of interesting items like bags, wooden birds, wallets, and other knick knacks. These used to be barracks for soldiers. The sellers outside can be more aggressive and in your face. Theres a restroom in shop #3.
The place to go to get all of your touristy shopping done. Nothing more, nothing less. Lots of hustlers in the area so be on alert.
Best place to find handicrafts and tell local people to tell the story about this place, which used to be for military purposes. Theres a great wall around where you can walk on the top and see the city and The Pacific. Visit this place and purchase some souvenirs from this wonderful city.
This is the former holding cells for the Office of the Holy Inquisition. It now contains a variety of local shops. Some are typical touristy fair. Some are actually shops of artisans. It is worth a visit.
Got dropped off here with family from Colombia, before we split up to go to dinner at Cande. Did a bit of shopping. Where the shops are at used to be jail cells. Go to the top of the wall and to the left of the watch tower is a good view of the pelicans statue.
This is a market place where locals show their wares for sale. It is located near the town center & there were many locals that came to our tour bus. ATTN: These people have been without any tour business for about 2 years now & they are eager to sell to anyone right now. I personally enjoyed bartering with them; individually its easier & you can get some really beautiful things. Be mindful to check the items you want to purchase over very carefully. We found that their workmanship was not always the best quality. The items could be easily fixed, but look over what you wish to purchase.
I loved shopping here! Had great little shops that you can practically find anything youre looking for as a souvenir
Very nice group of shops with friendly attendants!Bathroom at the end of the plaza costs about 1,200 -2,000 COP to use
Best meal we had in Cartagena. Ordered about ten different things among the group and everything was excellent. Highly recommend making it a stop on your dining tour. Reservations recommended!
Shopping area in the walled city. Good for handcrafted artisan crafts. Pretty cool stuff. I got an indigenous crafted mask. The shops used to be an old prison, each shop was a different cell.
Quaint, appealing, colorful shopping area. We had time during our tour to enjoy this unique shopping area.A lady with a basket of fruit on her head was more than willing to have photos of herself with us. She was thankful and gracious for the tip we gave her.
For tourists... sell pretty much the same thing
Nice products but so EXPENSIVE that it now has prices like in the US or Europe!
Many beautiful/nice souvenirs to buy in this historical place. I didnt give it 5 stars because people who sell it are not so polite, especially when you dont want to buy emeralds, which you can find in other places of the city cheaper.
Great place for tourist trap souvenirs but not the best prices or products. Bus loads of tourists were being dropped off. Kind, friendly shop owners. A great option for those buying souvenirs in large quantities but prices were actually quite expensive. Walk around the side and above to get beautiful sea and city views.
Lots of different shops for painting , local crafts, and souvenirs.
Its fine, loads of mainly tourist stuff, you see similar things all over the city. There are a few different things and prices do vary and haggle a lot. Youll get hassled fairly constantly and mainly around buying water etc. Its ok, there are much nicer areas in Cartagena but worth popping to.
This is the place to get local souvenirs in Cartagena. Youll have some folks haggle you a bit, but not near as much as in the rest of the town. Seems like the prices are about as good as youre going to get since there is a lot of the same thing in multiple stores in one strip mall like area.
Good place to pick up some Cartagena souvenirs. Make sure you negotiate prices. There are a lot of the same things in the different stalls, but some have some unique finds.
Good place to get some souvenirs. I got some local musical instruments and a pin for my jacket. Prices are descent many of the shops have slightly different things so check it out.
This was the armory back in the days of pirates....lots lot vending going on here and with some negotiating, the best prices in town on souvenirs.
A lot of stores roughly the same items they sell. Therefore if can always walk down and most likely find it at another. Now some stores have unique jewelry which you cant find at other stores. Always room for bargaining. Most of the store owners are local meaning from Cartagena so feel free to ask them about places to visit. One provided me great locations for food and sights.
A fun spot to walk around shops and street carts
This place is pretty cool. Youve gotta wander through some kitschy merchandise but a few of the shops had some really cool items. One shop in particular, about the 3rd or 4th from the end, had a very helpful young lady with some great handmade and very authentic looking souvenirs. The deeper into the stalls, the better the items. Go exploring.
The market is really neat, with the storefronts built into the old armory. Unfortunately, many of the restaurants sell the same cheap mass-produced trinkets. I wish there was more diversity, and more local hand-made fair.
Quaint local style market, set in old cave style jail cells. Very safe and friendly area and some excellent art shops. Cons: tourist prices so dont expect any good bargains.
I am being kind with a 2. There is NO history here, just shops. If you are not interested in shopping, walk to the top of the building and look at the city wall up close and the city views. The tours push the shops, though. The ladies with fruits on their head are pushy and want $3 to $5 for a photo.
Great place to see more of the historic architecture while shopping for your typical souvenirs. Variety of t shirts, glasses, magnets, etc. mixed in with some more unique and handmade items. A few shops will take credit cards with minimum purchases or foreign currency with an exchange fee (you wont get full exchange), but you are best off with cash pesos and either a currency converter or understanding of cost. Also a little hesitancy or reluctance, light bartering, or mention of where else you have seen something (many of the souvenir items repeat throughout the shopsmay get you a better deal.
The tourist souvenir shops at the former dungeons. Each shop carries just about the same items, ignore the annoying hawkers that set up outside the stores trying to sell their junk.
So many shops with great trinkets and better prices than other places in the city.
Great for tourists. Not many had AC or fans. Prices vary from shop to shop. Its worth seeing if you want some souvenirs.
