Lake Clifton WA 6215, Australia, Perth
Observation boardwalk overlooking living rocklike organisms, called thrombolites, on the shore.
It was very windy and bit chilly when we were here but still it was a good experience and very informative. From the information at the shelter at the start and all the way to the information signs along the walkway it gives you lots to find out about these ancient wonders. High recommended
Unique but as it was high tide (mid day), couldn’t really see much. Good to visit if passing by or a short drive but wouldn’t go all the way out to visit.
Beautiful sites to see these thrombolites. The boardwalk, the ducks, the weather contribute to a delightful walk.
Thank you very nice.
Stunning scenery, environmentally exhilarating experience of these special living forms. Great carpark area, easy access to the jetty as well as the walk trail. Avoid the ablution block and use insect repellent.
It’s very peaceful beautiful spot
Nice experience, Very nice and quiet place.
Best time is summer to be there around November to March to be able to clearly see the LIVING ROCKS.The story of the formation of the lake is unique.Bridge walk easy access car park toilet available.Kids will love the story and when they will know that 2000 years old living rocks… it will mesmerise them… have fun
Such a different experience with viewing of the Thrombolites. Beautiful day and clear water.
Great place for a break and quick walk when heading south
Beautiful lake but I guess I came at the wrong time lol, 3.30 ish in end of September. Sunset time (during low tidewould have a better view.
Our 2nd time coming to see the thrombolites. Even though this time the water was calmer and clearer, we were hoping to capture nicer photos. But still very worthwhile to do to pp by everytime we go down south in the hopes of getting that perfect photo. The ducklings and duck just made it that bit better for our experience here.
Not the sites fault but when we dropped in the water level was high so couldnt see much, it was freezing cold and the wind was howling 😆 better luck nextime I hope.
Incredibly beautiful place. Clear water allows good view of the thrombolites even when tide is not at the lowest. Sunset was gorgeous, when the horizon took on an amazing purple hue. Embracing crepuscular rays forms a beautiful silhouette, perfect for making a memory or taking a nice photo. Time the tide if you want to have a clear look at the thrombolites.
Really old and calming rocks innit.
Nice carpark and toilet block. Board walk to view the Thrombolites is good. Lovely views of the lake in general and specifically the Thrombolites.
Beautiful place to visit...scenic and educational. Nice walk trail and walk along the broadwalk. Could see the thrombolites even with the higher Winter water level.
Great little stop on the way to SW - pretty awesome to see such amazing thrombolites. Easy walk to pier.
Beware on the last turn off to Lake Clifton when coming from Mandurah the sign Thrombolites is on the right hand side of the road only. I missed it and found myself back on the main road...This is a free tourist attraction worth visiting. This time there was no wind and now in winter the Thrombolites are under water.
We came at night near midnight to enjoy the milky-way. Beautiful night starry sky. We counted at least 5 shooting stars. Very safe and peaceful with a few photographers there too. Btw, photos taken using normal smartphone. Yes it was that bright and clear.
Fantastic opportunity to learn about origins of life and prehistoric lifeforms, these thrombolites are amazing to witness. Great for primary school and high school kids, especially those doing school on the road!
Never knew what a thrombolite was until we turned left down here. Interesting things and some great views of the lake.
The Thrombolites are best viewed on a calm sunny day, but it is also worth coupling the 5km bush walk (2hrswith your visit
Interesting place to visit. Actually living organisms and Thrombolites were 1st on our planet. 😄😄😄
Beautiful experience! The deck at the end for the lake was very windy but felt amazing. There are so many Thrombolites and its such an amazing natural creation. Theres a trail along, which is pretty standard and doesnt have a lot of views so we didnt complete it but its good for a walk regardless.
Lake Clifton is a perfect spot to watch sunset. It’s an easy stroll on the boardwalk. Amazing thrombolites, rock like structures on the lake shoreline. A perfect time of the year to watch them. Absolutely would recommend this place for anyone to visit.
Toilets are available and it isn’t a long walk from the car park. Clean area. Remember to take your rubbish with you.Definitely recommend seeing
Was easy access and parking for disability. Boardwalk easy stroll. Very well signposted and history available. Having public toilets was a bonus after a long drive.
Nice quirky spot, if you dont like spiders walk careful as there are lots of webs with some fairly sized spiders above you. They offer a historical session and walk as part of the tourist park.
Nice place to stop on the way, quite a few signs saying not stick to the footpath.Basic facilities at the car park: toilets, 2 picnic tables.
A nice hangout place with friends and for celebrating special moments. Nice sky view at a no moon day and sunsets are always amazing.A good drive from Perth won’t make you disappoint.
We made this a day trip and it was well worth it. I flew the drone over and it revealed a way better angle of the place. Has good parking but the toilets were not maintained properly so my girls could not use. Mind the spiderwebs on the path to the lake. Too bad i cannot add videos to this review.
Easy walk along the boardwalk to the water. Best to go at low tide so they look more appealing. Colours in the lake are very nice also
Enjoyed our visit. Always great to see and read about these sorts of things. Well sign posted with plenty to read and learn. Toilet facilities and picnic tables
Over rated but considering it’s geographic and millions of years of history, this place has its own importance. The tide was high so didn’t get to see much of the ancient rocks.
Im sure on a nice spring or summers day this would be amazing to see but we visited on a day where it had been raining on and off and the wind was terrible. A plus though was the little robin red breast who entertained us with his antics on our car and in our wing mirror.
Great natural landscape to observe and learn about. Car park is small but can park on the lane way leading down to it. 2 trails, one is the boardwalk/jetty that is easy access, flat and in good condition that goes directly over the Thrombolites and has great water views. The other is a dirt trail walking track which is more bush based. The walking times are a bit dramatised
Beautiful, peaceful and fascinating piece of picturesque natural history.Amazing , been twice cant wait to see again
90 kilometers from Perth city, the place was indeed worth the drive. A perfectly serene lake amidst the bushlands. Though sunset was what I aimed for, I chose the wrong day. However, the orangish mauve clouds made the whole place flawlessly beautiful and the view was breathtaking.Watch out for kangaroos while driving especially after dusk. I had a close encounter with one even with me driving at moderately slow pace, phew!!!
I have enjoyed my visit to Lake Clifton with the Club 55 trip. From my perspective, it was an educational outing. I knew nothing about Thrombolites. After the visit I did some research to learn more about Thrombolites. I would recommend to anyone to pay a visit to Lake Clifton to view these "Living Rocks" There were signage & summaries to give visitors a brief of these Thrombolites. Great visit & educational.
Beautiful & peaceful place. Worth to visit. Nice place for photos. Carefully read the signposts. Dont follow the GPS. No water to wash hand in public toilets.
Incredible scenery, awesome wildlife! Saw Black cockatoos and colourful Orb spiders captured some great landscape photographs. Such a serenely peaceful place Ive put a mini guide below.Follow the wooden walkway through the swamp and scattered scrub you will see the salt marsh is overun by a green carpet of sea asparagus (West Australian Samphirea part of the succulent family, which acted as an important food and water source for the local idigenous Nyoongar peoples. The Aboriginal name for Samphire is Milyu (however the Nyoongar name for this plant is unknown). As you approach the jetty it is obvious Noorook Yalgoraps (lake cliftonshore line is domimated by the 2000 year old Thrombolites. Micro-organisms which as they photosynthasize draw calcium carbonate from the water to form these incredible dome like structures. Around 600 million years ago their ancient ancestors along with the Stromatalites (similar to the ones found in Hamelin Pool near Shark bayproduced the atmospheric oxygen vital for the evolution of life on land.Noorook Yalgorap (Lake Cliftonis 20km long and is the 2nd largest of the Yalgorup lake system which comprises of 10 lakes over an area of 55km within the Yalgorup National Park. The largest of which is Lake Preston to the south at 30km. Yalgorup is a Nyoogar word, Yalgor meaning lake and up meaning place of.The area is flush with a variety of wildlife with from iconic Black Cockatoos, Monitor and Blue Tongue lizards, Orb spiders and the incredibly unique Jewel Spider to name a few.Well worth a visit if you are in the Peel region.
Very interesting landscape. Perfect spot to watch a sunset. Would recommend and Ill definitely be going back to do the hike thats there as well.
Interesting place to visit if you’re passing by - lots of information about the thrombolites provided. Definitely not something you see everyday, so if you are in the area it’s worth the detour. There’s ample parking, and the walk is a short one from the car park to the beach with the thrombolites. Easily accessible for all ages.
A bit out of the way, but worth a visit! Best later in the summer when the water levels are lower or on a sunny calm day to appreciate the thrombolites properly. The adjacent walking path is also worth a trek to stretch your legs if you drove a distance to get there.
A beautiful place to visit of cultural significance. The lake is quite remote and is surrounded by nature and bush lands, which makes it a great place to escape to from the hustle and bustle.
A beautiful place to visit! The walk from the car park to the Thrombolites was quite short and is worth a quick stop if passing by. There is a separate walking trail that you can also do (about 5km, a 2 hour walk), but the trial covered with spiders and their webs when we went (late December(the path to the Thrombolites was pretty clear of them though). There is also a picnic area by the car park, but no bins (will have to bring back any rubbish with you).
Very unique and interesting place to visit .many overseas travels coming here because the uniqueness. You can take walk on the beautiful jetty and visit restaurant later on .enjoy the winery food .good day out with family and friends.
We ended up at the lake on a rainy day, but wow whst a surprise it was. The walkway opens up to the lake and the water was so vibrant. Just magic, these are only found in a few places around the world. These living rock like structures produce oxygen- only thought algae did that at the start. Just amazing
A special place created by nature seems untouched by time if you blink you will miss turn off for mount john road there is a cafe looks nice wheelchair accessible not far too walk to jetty bush toilets lol enjoy the wonder
