Modern Mexican restaurant with many margarita flavors & whimsical, nightclub-like decor.
La Madre in San Juan
Description
Privilege
Great Mexican spot! Definitely give the cheese fondue a try.
Delicious vegetarian options! Piña colada was so fresh (but too small for the price)
MoreThe food here was absolutely phenomenal. Highly recommend to anyone visiting old San Juan
MoreThis place was so good we ate here twice in a week. The portions were perfect, and everything was really fresh. They made accommodations where possible, and nothing disappointed.
MoreExcellent Food. CleanVery food service
pretty solid mexican food. there’s not many late night options in old san juan, this is one of them. our server was great.
MoreThe service was so bad. Placed an order to go for one piece of fried cheesecake 😋 and it took them like 40 minutes. In fact, I had to ask the waitress to check on the food. We cant blame the kitchen for this mistake as it was ready but waiting on here. No apologies from her or the manager. I didnt tip not because Im black like the myth goes, I didnt tip because it was a bad experience. However, she liked the cheese cake so at least it was good.Ps, it wasnt busy at the time either.
MoreSooo tasty & great ambiance. Got the fish tacos and they were delightful. Service was good & fast - although took a little while to get seated (meanwhile we went to the cocktail bar they also own next door which was a bit pricey but also nice). Regardless, the location is so nice in a scenic alley with string lights and was a lovely place to spend an evening
MoreAmazing food in an amazing place. Cant wait to get back to San juan to eat there again. My waitress, cant remember her name, but she had pink in her hair and was absolutely beautiful, but she was the best ever. So friendly!!
MoreOne of the best meals that we had in San Juan. The food is spectacular and you can tell they put a lot of effort into it. The vibe inside is nice and they have some great drink options. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area! Go with the steak option which was tasty and seasoned well.
MoreMaybe today is a bad day for them. Because I just saw 2 bad reviews. The food is good, but the service was terrible. A lot for waiters walking around doing nothing or giving water. So me and my boyfriend asked for a food at the same time, but they bring his food 10 minutes early than mine. We both was hungry and he got embarrassed to eat without me, so we diced to share the same soup with only one spoon.
MoreWaiter with tattoos is rude and doesn’t know how to treat customers. My brother didn’t like his meal and instead of offering to substitute it she decided to argue with us that it just tastes like that. “It’s not her fault you don’t like it”.
MoreThe spicy colada was one of my favorite drinks Ive ever had. The atmosphere is super neat too. Staff was sweet and helpful.
MoreThe food tasted good. Not authentic Mexican food but it was delicious. Servers gave prompt service. Small place and they accommodated our large party.
MoreGreat and delicious food. Nice place
The cocktails were great, and the food was amazing!! Definitely recommend!
I was with family and we enjoyed every single moment eating, drinking & talking. We didnt feel like we were rushed to leave. The waitress was great. Im definitely returning there next year when I return to Puerto Rico for my vacation.
MoreAmazing fish tacos and octopus tacos, price point is about $15 for three tacos when we visited. We came twice because of how good the food was. Tacos were super fresh and very generous on the amount of octopus on tacos. There is normally a wait for dinner so you may want to visit a bar nearby after putting your name down. Drinks were good but expensive for how small they were. There is indoor and outdoor seating.
MoreHidden gem in old San Juan! Everything we had here was delicious! The fondue and chip was the highlight. We may have to take another trip to old San Juan just to eat here again before we leave. Dont let this place pass you by if you are in the area!
MoreOutstanding food, small eatery whose team works well together to give great service. All dishes were amazing and the presentation to other tables with various foods looked the part.
MoreThis was a very pleasant surprise. The food was delicious. My son says his burrito was his favorite meal of the trip. I loved the fish tacos and my daughter loved the taquitos.
MoreOne of the best meals we had while in PR. We loved the service, price, and the taste so much that we had to go there more than once while on vacation there!!
MoreDelicious food! I went a few times during my trip. I highly recommend the lettuce fish tacos and the chimichanga.
MoreThe best Mexican food I have ever tried :You probably will wait around 45 min on a weekend, but there is very nice bar next to it with great mezcal cocktails :)
MoreVery good service. The personnel was super nice and helpful. The food was good and the prices were very good for a restaurant in Old San Juan.
MoreSeared ahi tuna is perfection. I could eat that all day long.I was with a large group and everyone enjoyed their meal. Waiters were very attentive and checked on us frequently. Overall a great experience.
MoreWe heard good things about this place. The food was great! Service however was pretty terrible, aside from the water guy. We asked the waitress for a few more minutes to look over the menu and I think she forgot about us. After 10 or 15 minutes sitting there we had to ASK her to order. Someone also came by and picked up my husbands empty drink glass and never bothered to ask if hed like another. The food took a while. Someone else cashed us out, not our waitress. They could do better.
MoreOverall we really enjoyed our dinner here. I like outdoor seating, especially in a beautiful place like old San Juan. Our server was very friendly and accommodating since our Spanish isn’t very good beyond basic phrasesThe fondue was delicious, and plentiful. We had our fair share and still had about 1/3 left to take with us. This could easily serve 4-5 people. I would’ve liked more pico since that flavor blends so well with the cheese but it was still deliciousMy wife didn’t really enjoy the way the octopus was cooked. It wasn’t bad but in her opinion it could’ve used more seasoning. The carnitas were out of control..seriously I’d give them 10 stars. It was the perfect taco setup and the cilantro cream sauce was the chef’s kissWhenever we return to PR this spot is top of the list.
MoreTL;DR: If you think my review is too long, then just have this takeaway - Go there!!! Its very good!Service: Server was kind and efficient. Pretty much perfect service.Food:French Toast - My god... This thing was so good. The bread was just the right amount of soft coupled with melted chocolate, cajeta, and agave nectar. One of the best french toast dishes Ive ever had! My only complaint is that the separating paper was left in the bacon when it was cooked. 😂 This isnt too big of a deal to me though since it was easily removable and the taste of this dish was so good.Huevos motuleños - I dont even know where to start with this dish. It was phenomenal. It had a perfect balance between the cheese, eggs, and ground beef (which is more like a delicious southern chili). Dont skip this one.Tamale (with jalapenos and cheese- The tamale had a good flavor but the masa was too thick. The masa needs to be thinned to allow the flavor to permeate. Other than that, it was very nice!Drinks:Watermelon Juice (not pictured- It tastes like fresh watermelon. What else would you expect? 😂Espresso - Unfortunately, this was not too good. Maybe skip this oneMargarita (Caribbean cherry- For those that dont know, a Caribbean cherry is tart. So, keep that in mind. Though if you know this, youll love this margarita. Its very tasty!!!Margarita (watermelon- like the margarita above, this was also very good. Cant go wrong with a margarita here!
MoreGreat atmosphere! They were a little busy, but the crispy pork belly tacos were amazing. Recommend the watermelon margaritas with spicy salt.
MoreBest enchiladas Ive ever had! The waitress suggested the enchiladas and they did not disappoint! Nice outdoor seating!
MoreThe food was delicious and the place was adorable but the hostess was terrible. Tried going two different nights and she was incredibly rude, took our names but never called us. Told us it would be an hour and when we went back up an hour and half later, after standing in the rain, she had marked our name off the list but we never received a call. They said they were getting our table ready but it took another half hour before we were seated. The night before we went to El Asador across the street and got sat right away and the food was delicious. The food at La Madre was good but not worth the wait or disrespect. Every other person who was waiting before us had the exact same thing happen to them.
MoreAmazing place! The food was great, but the best part was the variety of margaritas they have! I got a hibiscus one, my sister got a cucumber one (very refreshingand my cousin got a tamarindo one as well! I was able to get vegetarian tacos which were also great!
MoreCame here on a busy Sunday night, and after a long wait for a table we had an even longer wait to be greeted by our server. When we did get a drink order in, that again took a very long time to get. Finally, I’m pretty sure our waitress forgot about our food order! So bad in fact that we were able to order another round of drinks before she remembered to put the food in! When we finally got it, the food was pretty good but really not worth the hassle. Hoping we just came in on an off night.
MoreTasty food but wait for seating, drinks and food is LONG. Our wait time was about 45 mins but I think it was worth the wait. Not a great beer selection (only two local beer options). I got the orange tequila shrimp which was tasty and different, I recommend.
MoreJust as good as it was in 2015! We had to visit two times just to try all the things we wanted to on the menu. Try the tortilla soup and fish tacos!
MoreThe guacamole was DELICIOUS!!! Fish tacos, pork belly tacos, octopus tacos… all delicious! Would go back for gallons of the guac!
MoreCozy place , good drinks and tasty food. Definitely a great restaurant to check. Please waitress, let me know if you need a phone number of MY boyfriend😉
MoreFood and service were on point. The sides were filling and delicious and the fish tacos were very authentic and tasty. Highly recommend for anyone wanting something different or just quality in old San Juan.
MoreGreat place with excellent service. Tried the Jalapeño Colada which was excellent with a small hint of spice. The chicken mini burrito rolls was a recommendation from the friendly staff and they were not wrong. Guac and chips and the veggie tacos (substituted meat for refried beanswere good as well. Definitely a recommendation for people wanting to get their Mexican cuisine fix in San Juan. Place has indoor as well as outdoor patio seating both filled up pretty quick around 5:30 PM.
MoreGreat place, very clean and easy to find. Their delectable entrees are amazing with service that Is hard to find during the pandemic. The decorative room is pleasing and very relaxed. Try their jalapeño colada yummy!
MoreGreat food and service. They take the health regulations seriously which is a plus. Pretty fast service considering the number of customers.Overall 5/5
MoreThe cutest spot in Old San Juan. They have an outdoor and indoor seating, so depending on weather you can choose. We had our breakfast here, we ordered Chicken Tacos and the Chicken Crepas. Also ordered the hibiscus fresh juice, the juice was ok but something different to try.The food was great and the quantity was perfect!!!The guacamole and the fresh cream were really fresh and the crepas were well made.Highly recommend the CREPAS.10/10 to this cute chic place in the heart of Old San Juan!!!!
MoreTheir food was great! Mojito was great too. The staff was very friendly and the building was so beautiful!
MoreWe had high expectations on this place. It is well located and the image and ambiance was really nice. The menu was interesting therefore the expectations were high and we were excited to dine in.We ordered the fondue (Monterrey Jack melted cheeseand the presentation was good but the chips were stale. They brought fresh chips after we asked. We ordered then our meals. As to the food, we had Carlys Special. The plate described Salsa verde (no salsa verde was in the plateand the Tamal was too thick and cold.My wife ordered some Sopes and they were ok. I do want to say that you could tell that the chef DID KNOW how to cook and season but I think that it needs a little more authentic hit.Overall the experience was OK and so will be my rating. I was full but not that satisfied.
MoreWe visited Old Town while vacationing in San Juan, PR. We happened upon La Madre while taking in the sights, and it was the highlight of our trip! The staff were gracious, the digs eccentric and gothic like, and the food disappeared from our plates and remained forever etched in our memories. I will post the pic s... because this place is Amazing! If you travel to Old Town and bypass this hidden gem, you are foolish. I would go here every day I could if I was a permanent resident because it is just that good.
MoreAlright! So this place is cute: 5 stars. Ambiance: 5 stars. Food: 4 stars (the French toast bread was very tough possibly stale but the Tostados were AMAZING!!!Location: 5 star Price point: 3 stars (a little pricey for what I got portion wise. Quaint, trendy little corner cafe. Just charming! They play great music here and thats actually a big deal to me. Many who read my reviews know that I am well-balanced and my reviews are unsolicited and therefore impartial. I have never given a one star rating before ever but this was by far the worst customer service experience that I have had in San Juan. It was so bad it was kind of confounding. Ive never seen anyone work so hard to make me feel unwelcome. We were in route to another place and did not have time to reroute or I would have surely left. We were given no water refills no silverware and the service did not improve even after complaining. I do not want to believe my race was a factor in my treatment but I cant rule it out. Our food took 1 hour and 15 minutes to come out. The staff kept addressed my colleague and would not directly speak to or look at me. I do not recommend this establishment and will not be back.
MoreWe found this little place in Old San Juan when visiting Puerto Rico and got the chance to have brunch and dinner there a few days apart. Brunch was about an hour wait which was fine considering it was one of the few restaurants open for brunch. The fruit cocktail was very refreshing and all the fruit was sweet and juicy. Breakfast was overall good. Dinner was especially delicious! I had the crispiest fish tacos which were bigger than your average and one of the tastiest tacos Ive ever had. 100% recommend the tacos
MoreLa madre is a must visit for mexican food when in old San Juan. I am a vegetarian and they had enough options. The vegetable quesadillas, Burrito and enchiladas were just delicious 🥰 Even their freshly squeezed juices were good.
MoreThe food is amazing here. Taste authentic. Drinks were amazing. One of the best places to eat in old san juan. The service was fast. Our waiter was really helpful and told us the right items to order. Thanks for the great food and the experience.
