Havana Cathedral  is one of eleven Catholic cathedrals on the island and is located in the Plaza de la Catedral in Old Havana. Here Christopher Columbus’ remains were kept in the cathedral between 1796 and 1898 before they were taken to Seville Cathedral.

Beautiful old world style cathedral with a beautiful plaza in the middle. This cathedral makes you feel like you are in a European city and a great reminder of the importance Havana has always had in the world stage. The surrounding areas and plaza have interesting sculptures and there are shops where artist sell and show off their art. Definitely a must visit.

Havana Cathedral A.D 1777. Magnificent Roman Catholic Cathedral. Erected in the heart of Old Havana by using natural coral stone. You may see a splendid altar made in Rome inside the cathedral. There are many gilded sculptures, and there are small side altars. Two bells cast from an alloy of gold, silver and bronze have a fantastic and unique sound. The Cathedral has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.Plaza de la Cathedral usually is the most crowded tourist spot in Old Havana. It’s an impressive and historical place. It’s obvious.Definitely worth to visit. I admired in February 2018.

The cathedral is very nice from the inside. Worth the visit. Also do not skip climbing the tower. You get a really good view from the city.

Beautiful old cathedral in the middle of a lovely square, with cafes all around. Church is open for people to go inside. Very busy area, in the old part of Havana.

One place worth seeing in Cuba.

This is a wow factor both inside and even more so on the outside. The aged beauty that has been preserved carefully is an awesome awe inspiring sight that should not be missed when visiting Cuba

It’s located in a beautiful square in the northern part of the Old Town. Its facade is pleasant to see with its two steeples, especially in the afternoon, the sun illuminates the building.This 18th century baroque cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is one of the oldest cathedrals in America.When it is open (often before and after the service), the interior is interesting to watch, while being very sober.Admission is free, there is no guide available for a visit.

Wonderful big church with a square in front of it. It also has statues around the square to take pictures with!

La Catedral is a Must Go! This place is soo beautiful! A piece of the Old Cuba and what Cuba was in the past. Is History! Beautiful coffee places around this amazing building. In the back you can find more history: amazingly conserved old cars! Colors, beautiful and amazing cars that worth the ride! This place is just a wonderful place to visit! No doubt!

Grand historic cathedral, the art this both colonial and modern. Admission is free, wraps for womens legs is provided as required. Located on a colonial plaza.

Wonderful place to visit if you are in Habana vieja and you want to be a bit cooler than the outside. It is an architectural icon of the city and one of the main cathedrals in central America. There you can learn some information about the Spanish background of the city

With its curves and flourishes above doors and windows, the Catedral de la Habana is Havanas finest example of 18th century Cuban Baroque. The porous nature of the locally quarried limestone, which embedded with coral fossils and seashells, handicapped its ornate style. On the south side of the square across the cathedral is the Casa del Conde de Casa Bayona, thenoldest house in the area and today the Museo de Arte Colonial.

Great place to walk around and find good deal on souvenirs. You need good shoes and the whole day to shop. Lots of Cuban culture there.

If you like Cathedral, its good to visit this but if it doesnt mean much to you then its not that amazing. Theres no harm visiting but its not that appealing. For Havana, I guess its one of the most visited and biggest.

Havana Cathedral (Catedral de San Cristobalis one of eleven Catholic cathedrals on the island. It is located in the Plaza de la Catedral on Calle Empedrado, between San Ignacio y Mercaderes, Habana Vieja. The thirty by forty nine meter rectangular church serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana. Christopher Columbus’ remains were kept in the cathedral between 1796 and 1898, before they were taken to Seville Cathedral.The largest missionary group in Havana were priests of the Society of Jesus. After extensive petitioning and the purchase of a piece of land in the Plaza by Diego Evelino Hurtado de Compostela, Bishop of Santiago de Cuba, a permit was granted. The cathedral is set in the former Plaza de La Ciénaga. In 1727 plans to build a church, convent and collegium were approved and the project began to take form. The plaza is located on the site of a swamp that was drained and used as a naval dockyard before the cathedral was built. The Jesuits began construction of the cathedral in 1748 on the site of an earlier church and it was completed in 1777, well after King Carlos III expelled the Jesuits from the island in 1767. The cathedral once held remains of Christopher ColumbusIn 1796, after the Peace of Basel was signed and Spain ceded most of Hispaniola to France, the remains of Columbus were moved and laid to rest in the cathedrals Altar of the Gospel. The gravestone read "Oh Remains and Image of Great Columbus, Be Preserved One Thousand Years in the Funerary Urn." The remains were returned to Spain in 1898 after the Cuban War of Independence.

The baroque façade of Catedral is instantly recognizable. Two large, asymmetrical bell towers frame the grandiose stone exterior, considered one of the most beautiful in the Americas.In contrast, the Neo-Classical interior is much more understated. It was hard not to feel underwhelmed after visiting so many ornate churches in Europe, but that didn’t mean we still didn’t appreciate the simplicity of the Cathedral’s beauty.The Cathedral was not originally called Catedral de San Cristóbal. It was renamed this in 1796, when it began housing relics of Christopher Columbus. Well, at least that’s the popular belief, but there are no official records to prove that.

Another square to visit in Havana called Plaza Vieija even though, contrary to its name, it is not the oldest square in town. A number of international fashion shops in the area and the chocolate factory with the best freshly home made bonbons in a close-by side road.

This is one of my favorite places in all of Havana! You MUST go here!
