Archaeological park featuring full-size reconstructions of Roman houses, temples & an amphitheater.
Amazing restoration of portions of a Roman city built on the excavated foundations of the actual site. Highly recommended.
A great and detailed reconstruction of the ancient Roman city "Colonia Ulpia Traiana" (CUT). The park covers many different parts of Roman life and contains a lot of buildings with information boards. Our group had a tour guide who took us through the most important stations of the park (in Germanand I can only recommend that. Nice lady who knew her topic very well and made everything exciting for children. A must-visit for every Latin student!
One of the most beautiful and well created archeological site. The park is really huge. In trip advisor and various other review sites, people talk about spending nearly 3hrs here. Well, you need atleast a day to really feel and understand the history behind this place. The park could be entered through multiple entries which are primarily the 3 active gates of the park. The main attractions in the park are Hafentempel, Roemer Museum, Amphitheater and the walls and towers near the Amphitheater. There is a windmill in the middle of the park. It is converted into cafe and they dont allow people to go up to view from the terrace which is shame. Apart from that the entire archeological park is must see! It is only 800m from the railway station.
Best place to visit
The ruins are great for sightseeing and phototaking. The museum has many interesting exhibits. Toilets are clean and easily accessible. Worth a second trip just to slowly read all the descriptions.
Nice outdoor museum. Tour guides were very informative. After the tour we ended up with nice delicious gelato neary by the church.
Its an interesting place to visit, the museum is excellent, there is a lot of qide open space that could be used to sell more of the story about the town
Nice getaway for a Weekend
Everything was amazingly preserved and kept. Whole propery of museum, localitities is made and givebyou an great view of how things worked in the past. Excellent choice for visit.
Beautiful place to visit with the whole family
If you have any interest in Rome history, this is a must. Great park to explore (is very popular with school groupsthe reconstructed buildings are very information and great to explore. Must visit the museum. Food and drink available, and good parking facilities.
Surprisingly amazing!
Nice experience with lots of good information!
Great place, like a small Rome dont miss it.
Very big park on a historical site where the past is brought back to the present.I hope much more will be excavated and many more buildings reconstructed.Becouse what has been done is very much like the real deal with a very great kwality. Like the northern gate and the amphitheater are my personal favorites.Definitely worth a visit if you like history.
Outside walking in the fresh air, interactive and very interesting. Kiddo’s loved it and the playground is incredible!Lots of free parking
Quite and peaceful place. Be prepared to spend at least half a day here. Also be ready to walk a lot. Must visit if you are in and around Xanten.
Very interesting ancient Roman site. A pity that some parts were closed due to Covid measures.
What an amazing experience. If you in this part of Germany, this is a must on your to-do list. I will definitely be coming here again next time we in Germany. People and staff were so friendly and helpful. 10 out of 10.
Authentic replication of 1st century Roman settlement in this area. We spent 4 hours there and still couldnt get enough. The park is well laid, information is available in English German and Dutch. The museum is included in the price. Definitely worth a visit, this is an area of historical significance.
The LVR park consists of the XantenTempl, Colosseum, Windmill , LVR Museum, Shipbuild Museum which are nice and informative.A nice place to visit on a sunny day.. Lots of free place for kids to play around as well..
We got a ticket because we forgot to put the bleu card in the car.
Xanten was one of two Roman military strongholds in Germany, the largest being in Cologne. The town itself was built on the banks of the Rhine. Little remains of the old town as the stone used in the original construction was sold for other building projects over the millenia. But certain keys buildings were reconstructed post Second World War. These include the Harbour Temple, the Amphitheater, and the Roman Museum which is also a protective housing of steel and glass that shrouds the enormous bath house. The town sprawled over a large area and today it is covered by well-maintained grass lawns. We spent the whole day at this location. The museum covers interesting aspects of Roman life in Xanten. For only 9 Euros per adult, it was truly worth it.
We had a very nice time. Even with all the Covid measures in place. The museum was open at least and it was very interesting and informative.
One of the most fascinating places to see in this area. Even if you’re not too into history, it’s a humbling experience to stand below the pillars of the temple or inside the amphitheater and consider how old they are and what stories they could tell. The park itself is also real nice to take a walk in and because the different Roman buildings are spread all over it, you don’t just walk and walk and walk but can take breaks to admire everything and learn more about the history of the place from the educational boards. The museum is especially interesting for kids because it tells about different games Roman kids used to play and they’ve even set up some of them for visitors to give a try.The only downside is that it gets very exhausting in the summer because there’s almost zero shade. So even though it is fine to bring your own food and drinks, you may want to consider stopping at the restaurant for a bite. Not only does it give you the feel you’re actually having dinner at a Roman home, it’s also good for cooling you down. In relation to that, I suggest you go right from the entrance and then walk the park counter-clockwise, as that will have you visit the amphitheater (possibly the park’s highlightlast and then you can take a break before you leave the park. The town center also isn’t very far by foot and since you’re already there, you should definitely go and check it out Xanten’s really cosy and charming.
tldr; amazing park, totally worth visiting. The park spans over a very big parcel of land, which would take around 40-60 minutes to tour around, depending on your pace. Thus, prepare for a long walk with some confortable shoes and some water. The park has various amenities on site, like toilets, tourist information and an enclosed museum that looks like a deposit from outside.Outside there are various Roman structures that were reconstructed to provide the allure of those ages. Taking a walk among the tree alleys or among the multiple guard towers is a real delight. Also, visiting the main gates is a must.In case the museum is closed (due to covid for example), it is a good idea to go around it and near the river side you may find various informational boards telling about the history of the place, how it appeared and developed through time.Hope you get a nice weather for your visit and enjoy it at its fullest!
A very fine place to visit and the park in Xanten is like cherry on top!
Beautiful place to see..Great Roman History preserved.Especially the Amphitheatre. There are other monuments and a Museum to see. There is the Xanten Lake nearbyThe whole park is huge and Beautiful. Also the ticket is free of cost..
Wondeful place. Roman history in full glory. Amazing museum. Amphitheatre. Open area. Kids play area. Nostalgic hotel. All amazing.
We had a beautiful time there, lots of interesting buildings beautifully restored. You really feel the history here. The food was limited due to pandemic restrictions, I wish there wouldve been more vegetarian options than fries.
It was ok. You need a full day to see it all. And you can learn a lot about the romans anf their daily life.
Really quite splendid. My spouse and I took a trip to Xanten as history fans, and we were not disappointed in seeing this park! Its very spacious and perfect for a picinic, though we enjoyed the cafe and Roman dishes they served. There is a place to get and get coffee as well as a coffee shack, to satiate all dietary needs if you come unprepared as we did.Absolutely recommend this for people with kids!! There is a very fun play area. Pets are also welcome. Perfect family space; lots of benches and all you need to enjoy 2 or 6 hours here.
fascinating place to visit, mightve had a better time if wed been able to find our way there better, and even more so, to find our way back to Dortmund afterward. Ill let my photos speak for me, as much about the place left me a bit speechless, coming from North America where evidence of human habitation in ancient times is not so in-your-face as it can be in Europe.
Awesome place. Lots of history. Nice to spend the day. Really lots to do for kids.
What a great place. The tour was interesting and restoration work that has been done was great to look at. In addition we had the opportunity to eat "food from the time" at the restaurant. While I wouldnt make a habit o eating here the food was good and I would enjoy visiting the museum again.
Information in English, German and Dutch. Nice park, a lot of information and a big exhibition / museum. Not expensive, 9 euros for 1 adult. You can spend easily half a day here.
Really interesting , i was there 15 years ago , now is even better , just close too early 18.00 oclock im April start to be too early
Really unique place to observe ancient Roman (re)builds and artefacts! And during the next coming years, theres more to discover...
Big park. Lots to see. Its better if its good weather.
Fascinating park with recreated Roman buildings and interesting museum.
Ruins of a 2nd centuary Roman city. Need to appreciate the way the place is maintained. Very hospitable staff. Worth visiting
Its a good place to see how the romans lived alongside the Rijn.
This has to be the best Roman museum-come-recreation Ive ever been to. The park that surrounds the museum is filledwith recreated roman buildings, ontop of the old roman settlement. When I say its the size of the city it is. For more fanatical history fans youll need several days maybe to take it all in. My dad and I spent 5 hours walking easily and still didnt get to see everything. We had to rush the museum, so theres definitely room for another visit. The gift shops (there are twoare amazing, plenty of toilets, and even a roman bath! 11/10
Very cool site to discover what a Roman colony looked like
A super place for the whole family. A full day is easy to spend here, we took a picnic and blankets to make the most
Very nice park, indoor and outdoor museum, great place for picknick, fun activities for kids, not crowded. We spent 5 hours there.
I came back here after about 20 years and was very disappointed - in the location and my memories. Its a large park but its mostly empty. There is a litte Colosseum which is nice, also a rebuild Romanian tavern and a hidden little room where you can watch a short movie about the interesting antic making of the buildings. But basically you only have 4-5 buildings, a modern but rather boring museum full of stones and replicas and sheep. Not really worth a visit. Also its partly in a very bad state with unfinished construction sides and messy site fences...
Worth a visit, great place to spend a day outside, even with kids!
I had a really good time visiting this archaeological park. The installation is really interesting and we can see they put a lot of effort into preserving the roman findings
Great place for whole Family! We felt like in Gladiator :-I can cordially recommend to experience it!
