Small, contemporary zoo with gardens, a handful of kids’ rides, a train & concessions.
This zoo is great, but there are too many animals for such a small place. Some species seemed very stressed out about the crowd and they should have more green spaces to hide: the felines for instance are constantly turning in their cage and seem distraught. Same with the baboons sitting on a pile of branches with no green... I felt really sorry for the parrots in their tiny cages.... I think this zoo should be updated to respect nowadays criteria of animal welfare. Apart from this it was really nice, especially when we could build a house for guinea pigs. Also we could pet some goats under the careful eyes of the zookeeper, so it felt like the animals were very well taken care off. We were not allowed to touch them, which I found great and respectful. The staff was nice and everything was easily accessible.
Place is relatively small but enough to enjoy seeing animals, it has a good area to have some meal and also take out menu. The zoo has giraffes, elephants including gorillas, tiger and jaguar.
I visited this during the weekdays, and it was beautiful. There is a buffet restaurant near the zoo. There are some Kyoto specific rare birds. So, I recommend those who love zoo should pay a visit to this. The number of elephants there are quite a lot. For the first time I have seen Goral. I was expecting crocodile but I saw Salamander. I was able to experience Tiger and Tigresses both. I also experienced to see Gorilla for the first time.
pretty small zoosuitable for family with kids
Cheap, small little zoo with a surprising number of animals. Plenty of room for people but the animal enclosures are sadly quite small. The kids had lots of fun.
Don’t like zoos, and this is no exception. But in a way it’s good to get in emotional contact with those incredible living creatures, for understanding how precious they are to us as humankind and, in turn, how pernicious we are to them.
A lot of the enclousures seemed too small for the animals, and they looked a little missrable which bothered me a lot. The gift shop was also horrible, no kyoto zoo specific merchandise, just generic boring items you would be better off finding at any cheap store or on aliexpress. As for any positives here, there were lots of places to sit under shade here, and plenty of vending machines to get a drink and staff were nice. Overall id recommend going to the zoo in Osaka instead.
Condition of the animals, they should be free in their correct area
Not much shade, bring Sun screen.
First 3 habitats there was no animals. When we did eventually find the first ones…The habitats for each of the animals looked like it hasn’t been touched for weeks, cobwebs everywhere animals seem miserable, one of the Tanuki looked like it was about to die.The upside to all of this was it was cheap to get in.¥750
Its a medium sized zoo. Very nice and clean. It has many animals. Particularly amazed to see the penguins. Also they use elephants litter for composting. You feel delighted. There are a few picnic spots where one can go to enjoy.
This place is a shame and should be closed, like every other zoo who dont give a **** about animals care.Cages are so small, its really painful to see that.A really bad place. Its the last time Ive visit a zoo.
A small zoo but in a picturesque location, a little outside the centre of Kyoto but easy enough to get to via subway. Cheap entry and a good variety of animals with a petting zoo open at select times in the morning and afternoon.
Many animals and great facilities. Not too crowded, even on the weekend or national holidays.
Lovely zoo for an outing with little kids. Size is appropriate for toddlers and kindergarten children.
Such a great zoo for young kids and adults. Zoo with beautiful landscape and a small fun Fair. There is also elephant, tiger, giraff! By the way, all animals look healthy and beautiful. Zoo keepers did a Good job!
It is a very nice place especially for kids. We enjoyed seeing animals & birds. Also it is cheap only 620 yen per adult & free for kids. Only drawbacks were it is overcrowded in weekends & it is small one in comparison to Kobe Oji zoo.
Small but interesting zoo. Most of the animals seemed happy. Only 620 yen for adults. Good learning opportunities for kids and adults. You can see exotic and local wildlife. Good for families and couples.
i visited in 2018 and 2020. Its interesting cause many animals from many countries. But, the size is small. and its better if there is more trees cause is very hot in summer.
First visit to a zoo ever. Its was great!
Incredible animals from all walks of life. Elephants, lions, red pandas, rare birds and foxes. Theres a section for people to pet the animals as well. Well worth the visit for the entire family.
Generally a happy zoo except the larger mammals: when we were there the bear and one of the Amur Tigers were circling (stereotypyin tiny tiny enclosures 😭.There were also elephants, lots of birds, guinea pig and goat touching pens. The nocturnal animal section was interesting. But I think the zoo is too small to hold the larger mammals, so they should just focus on smaller animals or actually care about the well being of the larger mammals and give them more space or whatever they need 😢. I wonder if their caregivers feel sad watching them do repetitive behaviors all day like that😢.
The place is kept quite good but the cages are really bare and old. The animals don’t have enough space to move and some of them are visibly distressed (they keep walking back and forth). Zoos are a sad place, but I hope they will upgrade the current accommodations do the animal can live a decent life.
Really fun zoo and a great price. Very family friendly, smells way better than zoos usually do. Animals are obviously taken care of really well and arent too shy of humans. Highly recommend as a family outing or a date.
Animals are kept in incredibly small enclosures (eg. tigers, lions, pumas, hippo etc.Animals do not receive enough space to roam around and some enclosures are obviously not well maintained. Price is relatively cheap but nothing much to do there. Would not want to see this torture of the animals again :(
Animal in good conditions, kids are free admission
Great zoo for younger kids. They have a small amusement park and food allowed to bring in. Small zoo though
Not large. But Clean and everyone in there look happy and healthly.
I took my kids to this zoo a few times while our stay in Kyoto. It’s an amazing zoo. They have quite a bit of collections. The animals are well taken care of and the facilities are nice and clean. The zoo is well layout with clear directions/signs. They have petting area. It’s a kids friendly place. They also have a little library at the cafe area. I highly recommended this place.
Great place to spend with the family, kids till age 16 is free and Adult 600 yen. Its not a big zoo but its enough to spend one hour or two, bring something to eat before if you want to sit outside with the animals and eat. You t have there restaurant in the sec floor entrance building, no need to enter the zoo to get there. We came with a car, there is a big underground parking very close to the zoo, check on Google map!
Nice place to visit. The feline area seemed super small and I felt bad for the lion and jaguar. Their enclosure wasnt that very big. I wouldnt want to keep a dog in there. However the park was nice walk around and the price was rarely cheap, free if you were 15 or under.
Nice zoo near Heian Shrine. Cute place with lots of exiibits. Kid friendly but not too much English signage. I liked the red panda!
Very clean zoo with lots of bathrooms. Lots of variety of animals that were easy to see. The animal enclosures seemed kind of small though 😕but overall great zoo.
Lots of animals to see, giraffes, penguins, goats, flamingos, sheep, elephants, all for 600 yen. Definitely a must for tourists.
Large zoo, the big cats were forced into small cages for people to look at and were very unhappy and discomforted, we were refused to buy a disabled ticket by the lady on the till so we had to pay for full price tickets.
A small Zoo with animals mostly in cages. Reasonable for what is it. Allows for close proximity exposure with the big cats and the tickets is relatively affordable at 500 yen per adult. I estimate its good for a couple of hours to half a day in duration.
A very sweet little zoo! Very clean and pleasant. Do not allocate more than an hour or two, however. The zoo may be seen thoroughly within an hour and a half.
Amazing zoo which I highly suggest going to if you are in the Kyoto area. A ten minute walk from the train station and almost parallel with the local shrine (which is also a must seeit is easy to get to and well marked. Lots of animals that you may not have seen before along with some big animals too! Bit sad to see some animals like the lion and tigers in such small enclosures but my knowledge on that is little.
Very reasonable price for a zoo, but a pity that, because it is run by the city, the facility is small and the animals do not have the space they need to be happy and healthy.
Kyoto zoo is a good place to visit. They have a lot of different animals tho the amount of each species are very limited. my daughter really love the little fox. The tiger cage also interesting. They design the cage so that you can take a good pic of the tiger heading your way. There is also a small theme park kids can ride ships, mini train, bump car and ferrish wheel. Each attraction need 1 coin, you can purchase the coins in the vending machine inside the theme park, 1 coin = JPY 200 (17 Nov 2018)
The enclosures for the tigers, lion and bear are ridiculously small, they are roughly 2x4m2. An absolute disgrace to any animal. If Japan has no regulations on animal spacing they seriously need it. If you are an animal lover the first area with the animals above will make you want to leave. As background Ive been to Tokyo zoo and the only enclosure there that bothered me was the elephant one.
Small but very enjoyable Zoo. Animals look happy. Everything well organized. Very reasonably priced. We enjoyed the visit a lot. Highly recommend!
Its small and reasonably priced. Overall the animals looks like well taken care off. However the lion was skinny but could be due to old age. Pretty good way to spend 2 hours
leave early in the morning to be able to park near here. Parking prices start at 800 yen 1200 yen. 5 minutes walk.Pay 600 yen for adults. free children. strategic location and close to the city center. so its easy to take a bus or train.
Zoo is little small is feels little bit artificial. However, Considering the varieties of animals and things to do for kids it’s worth visiting!!
Good zoo with a large variety of animals. Its kept pretty clean and the animals appear to be treated well. The Mandarin ducks and red panda were beautiful.
Excellent zoo! Huge variety of interesting animals and the enclosure are designed so you can easily see everything.
Big zoo! The animals care takers seem passionate and attentive. It is a small fee to enter making this a great place to visit often! They also have a large variety of animals!!
The ticket for adult is only 600 yen. Nice place to visit but it quite small. *** the cage for tiger is too small!!! Also the lion cage. Sooo pitiful!
We spent a few hours here in april filled with the colours of spring, my only complaint is the bear stayed in his cave the whole time. Zoo is a smaller zoo, would have liked to see pandas or koalas.
