Kylemore Abbey, Pollacappul, Connemara, Co. Galway, Ireland, Ros Comain
Waterside, Gothic Benedictine nunnery with restored Victorian rooms and free garden tours.
Amazing building and garden, such a storied history in this part of the world. 100% worth a visit, there is so much to see there.
Lots of things to see and beautiful scenery overall. Lots of different plants and trees from around the world. We ended up spending about 3 hours here. They have a shuttle to move around the place but walking is doable and lovely. Highly recommend this!
Stopped here last week and loved the abbey and gardens! It was nice to walk around the area and see all the sights. As we visited in the off-season, there was no wait for entry or to see the various sights. We started with the bus ride over to the gardens then rode back over to go through the abbey and chapel.Certainly worth a stop if you are in the area!
Beautiful gardens, wonderful walks, grand house with knowledgeable guide. The restaurant had fantastic homemade food. Very nice gift shop.
Super beautiful grounds, building and setting with a breathtaking drive through the Connemara National park to get there. The interior didn’t do much for me but that stunning building set on the lake is spectacular, and nice to be able to walk the lake and to the walled gardens. Loved the option to hop on a free shuttle to take you the substantial distance to the gardens if need be. Was also great to have a first rate cafeteria with tons of yummy food options.
Coming from Galway it is a beautiful drive. The Abbey itself is impressive and well preserved. The gardens around were well kept but what i liked the most was the gothic church that was just a short walk from the Abbey. Will definitely visit again in 2023.
Allow plenty of time to see everything the Abbey offers. The gardens, mansion, church, grounds etc. are breathtaking. Its a glimpse of how wealthy Victorian era people lived in such beautiful surroundings. Connemara ponies were a special touch.
The walled garden was my favorite! Had a packed lunch near the abbey by the lake. Spectacular views.
Had a thoroughly enjoyable trying at Kylemore Abbey. Loved hearing the history talk that covered the 3 groups that have called Kylemore Castle home. The grounds are beautiful and the walled garden was spectacular. Had lunch at Kylemore kitchen which was delicious, the "legendary" apple pie with warm custard was indeed the stuff legends are made of.
First time there and was not disappointed. Great scenery, wonderful walks and spectacular gardens. Abbey is worth a visit. The usual craft and food facilities at the location. Regular Shuttle Bus between Gardens & Abbey. Not to be missed
Really nice visit ! The castle itself is rather small but the park is a must do. If you can, skip the bus that takes you to the Victorian Garden and hike there, its a 1h easy walk in a gorgeous forest.
The most beautiful drive to get to this castle. I just wanted to stop everywhere.Watch for sheep on the roadYou can pay there with cash or cardBeautiful cafeteriaBeautiful castle, abbey (church& amazing gardens100% recommended to go with kids as well.To go to the gardens you can go by bus or walking. The walk is about 3-4km & it’s in a amazing forest.
Beautiful place for a day out, lovely shop and cafe. Interesting talk in the house and beautiful stroll around the walled garden, some connemara ponies in the paddocks. Our 2 children, aged 10 and 12, were well entertained and so were we.
Free car parking. To enter the Abbey you can buy a ticket at the entrance and it took less that 5 min. To visit the walled gardens, theres a bus that takes you from the entrance to there. If you prefer to walk, you can have the chance to see the little waterfall.
This is a magical place. The restored gardens are fantastic and a delight to wander around. The new interactive installation at the house is informative and utilises the rooms in the house to link the past with the present. Highly recommended for young and old.
Beautiful place, excellent food and trip to gardens. Be aware of midgets in the gardens (have repelent handy), for best experience from stunning nature.
There was a wedding when we arrived and it was just like a fairytale! The rain came over and the woods were nice to get good cover. The story is beautiful and the place also
A wonderful place to spend an half day exploring though it can get a bit busy when the tour buses roll in. The grounds are gorgeous and very well kept and appreciated that there was a bus that would take you from the Abbey to the garden as in our case there was a light shower and wouldnt have been enjoyable to walk back.
I love this place, but it looks nicer when you look from further. But otherwise, garden are very nice all year round, maybe except winter, inside area could be better labeled with explaining notes what we are looking at, but otherwise, worth a visit.
Breath taking with 3 places to visit as part of the entrance fee. Kylemore Abbey, the gothic Church and the walled Gardens... you wont be disappointed
Regardless of where you are at Kylemore Abbey, you can randomly point your camera, take a pic, and itll be post-card worthy. The Abbey, the church, the walled garden, the grounds... Everything here is gorgeous. Worth it for the views alone! The tour of the abbey itself seemed short, but I get it because its still in operation. 10/10 would go again.
The relatively “recent” history of this property is truly amazing. I loved hearing the stories from the guides as we walked through the house. The gardens are so beautiful. I could have easily spent the entire day on the property but an hour or two would do for those on a tight schedule. I would highly recommend this to anyone that is traveling nearby. Thank you to the caretakers for making this property available to the public.
Kylemore Abbey is absolutely stunning. Nestled in rolling hills and a calm lake, the building and grounds are just magical. The Abbey has many rooms that are accessible with tons of artifacts throughout. We walked the grounds and saw the Neo-Gothic church, which was small, but very nice. There is a shuttle from near the gift shop that runs up to the walled garden. The gardens are beautiful - very well maintained and just impeccable throughout. The horses and pigs were a nice addition to see also. We grabbed a bite to eat at the restaurant, everything was pretty good. Id highly recommend stopping here on your journey.
This is an amazing place for a full day family picnic. I started my visit with castle then visited the garden which is almost 2 km of trek . This place has historic significance of how queen and later nuns helped the society. Also, this place have large siting restaurant where veg and non-food is served . I really like the carrot cake and chicken wrap
Very nice place to spend couple of hours. The castle is great and the views around are even greater. A walk in the well maintained gardens are fabulous.
The gardens were absolutely amazing and beautiful and some of the most beautiful plants I have ever seen. Its well taken care of! The Kyle Moore Abby Castle was beautiful but you only get to tour a very limited part of it. The walk along on the trail with the creek and the waterfalls were beautiful!
Beautiful castle that is now a monastery a monastery. Fantastic grounds to walk around browned. Spectacular countryside scenery.
The abbey is really beautiful and there are a lot of walking trails onsite. The only problem is that you will not be able to leave if you do not have a car! Apparently, there is an automatic gate which should open for the car and it does not open for the pedestrian, there is no pedestrian gate or the security phone. So I had to run to the parking to find a car which will leave soon. As we were leaving some time after the closing, it was quite tricky to do.
Stunning location and historic building. The gardens are worth a visit, stunning views. The newly built coffee & shop area is seriously lacking in charm but the cafe has delicious treats and the shop sells delicious jam, made by the Abbey/nuns.
Beautiful abbey surrounded by amazing scenery. We got there on a good sunny day but Im sure its gorgeous no matter the weather. All staff friendly and approachable. Not to be missed.
Gorgeous castle/abbey in a beautiful setting. Theyve done a great job with the castle tour. Lots of interesting information and beautifully presented. The mini cathedral and the rest of the grounds are also beautiful. We spent about 3 hours and had a great time.
Is the abbey amazing on the outside? Yes, especially sitting in front of the lake. Can you see anything inside? No.You get access to 4 (out of 70+rooms and they are all nice but for the price of the tickets I was disappointed. The gardens are neat, nothing too special, there’s lots to see but it’s mostly fruits & vegetables being grown. Didn’t do the woodland walk. If we didn’t make it, I wouldn’t have missed it.
Mesmerizing location! Would have liked an extra hour here but was with Galway Tours. Would have had plenty of time had I not taken long with lunch.
Such a stunning property! We will have to come back to see the gardens but the Abbey itself and the church and the walking trail are all so beautiful.
Its a good place to visit, in middle at the nature. Stunning and relaxing 😌 It also has access to all the amenities you will need toilets and area bar.
Spent 3 hours here. A good walk on the trail from the visitors centre to the amazingly well tended walled garden, then a shuttle back. The Abbey and Gothic church are beautifully situated, open to viewing downstairs.
So beautiful with an interesting history. The drive in is fun too. AmaZing cafe. Excellent food. Did not see the gardens so can’t comment.
One of the most beautiful castle (which is actually an Abbyin Ireland and a must stop when visiting Ireland. It is stunning, there is a restaurant where you can eat some of the more traditional food of Ireland. There is also enough parking space for cars and buses. The Abby is inside the Condemara national park and is also a very scenic drive.
Such beautiful surroundings, the views alone are stunning. We heard a cuckoo three times, the first time Ive heard one in 25 years. The Gothic Church, very sad story behind why it was built but what a fantastic legacy, Margaret Henrys life and memory will live on forever. The house itself is beautiful, but the walled gardens, wow. There is a shuttle bus running from the house to the gardens so we took it with the intention of walking back, but its a decent enough spin to the gardens so we got the bus back too! The gardens are stunning. Make sure you bring your camera and good walking shoes. We visited the cafe, the food was lovely. Toilets everywhere, every toilet was clean and well stocked. The gift shop is lovely too and we bought a few souvenirs, very reasonably priced. Had a lovely day.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my visit, a calm and relaxing place. Quite beautiful with an interesting history. I will come back to see the garden in bloom.
Great place, smaller than expected. There is a cafeteria with reasonable food prices. Walled garden nearby on a shuttle ride. Overall relaxing walking around. Pig pen on the ground.
Interesting tour and history. Beautiful location. Lovely walks and gardens are beautiful. Delighted to have visited here on such a fine day too! Certain Hollywood actor/ sexiest man was there with his family also which made our visit all the nicer! 😀
Stunning place and well worth the visit. Staff, helpful, gardens are magnificent and well maintained. Shuttle bus driver was supper friendly , polite and patient . Beautiful place to visit, Enjoy
I visited Kylemore Abbey on the first day of opening for the new season in March 2022. Wow! What a place! The scenery is truly breathtaking and the grounds are extremely well kept. Learning about the house and its previous occupants is also very interesting, plus there is a free shuttle bus to the Victorian Walled Garden (a nice addition as just walking around the grounds/house can be taxing enough). You can easily spend a full day here if you include the gift shop and grabbing a bite to eat in the cafe before/after roaming the grounds. If youre in the area of this amazing place, be sure to stop by. You wont regret it!
Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden is one of the most famous attractions in Connemara, and it’s easy to see why when you see it in person. When you arrive at Kylemore, the first thing you’ll notice is Pollacapall Lough and Kylemore Abbey in the background. Photos you take will instantly look like a postcard with the Abbey and the mountains in the background, and the reflection of the Abbey on the Lough. It’s one of the most beautiful sites, worthy of admiration! When you visit the Castle, you can access the ground floor which is rich with information: furniture and decor of the day, Victorian fashion exhibited on mannequins, audio-visual displays which highlight stories and information of the Abbey and it’s residents, and text-based information displays. When you visit Kylemore, you can take a shuttle bus from the from the Abbey which runs every 15 minutes, or you can take a scenic 20 minute woodland walk to arrive at the gardens. Personally I enjoyed taking the walk through the woodlands and enjoying the view of the surrounding forests, mountains and the river. There are also information boards on display giving information of specific features of the walk. When you arrive at the Walled Gardens, there is a tea room available which serves welcome refreshments and homemade food. You can also admire the Connemara Ponies which graze the nearby field. At the Abbey there is also a Craft Shop, Pottery Studio and Restaurant that can be enjoyed. At the time of writing this, the entrance for an adult costs €15 and is well worth the cost for the experience of visiting Kylemore. In conclusion I’d say with surety that adding Kylemore Abbey to my Connemara itinerary was a valuable experience that I won’t forget in a rush.
Recommend to visit this place. Its not a shot drive but theres so much to see on the way that youll enjoy expending more than 4 hours there. The castle is one of the few ones Ive seen that are meant to be a lady castle. The gardens are beautiful .. even just the walk from point a to point d.The only thing Ill have to give a heads up its about the castle guide tour. They take you into a room and have seat for more than an hour to tell you about the story of the owners and how it became an Abby but sadly its to long of a talk and honestly you can read and see everything they tell you as you walk around the castle.
Beauty and peace. This beautiful Abbey is located in a very remote and secluded area, surrounded by green hills. When you enter it, you feel like that you are far away from the dusty world and the ordinary life outside. It gives you a sense of purity and peace deep into your soul. The lake in front of the Abbey, was so smooth and shining, like a natural mirror and reflects the Abbey into it.The garden was not very big, but carefully designed like an oil painting, with multiple colors of flowers, brings you a sense of beauty and tranquility. It was such a beautiful and peaceful experience to visit!
Oh yeah, this castle, the garden, and the walk along the river, was an all day adventure. Take some good waking shoes, a good lunch, plenty of water, a good camera, and a mask. This was one of the more elaborate castles, it is very well kept and maintained. The hostess are very kind and helpful, again this is a self-guided tour. However, there are some hostess that can answer most questions.
Loving the Victorian interior so much! Surprisingly not as big as it looks from the outside, but beautiful all the same. The detail placement of each stuff and ornament makes you feel nostalgic and wonder how the life of the Henry families back then was. I especially love the dining room. Both Kylemore Abbey & the Victorian Walled Garden are truly a feast for the eyes, not to mention the surrounding lake and woods. I would say spare 3-4 hours here to fully explore the whole place.
Wonderful day at the Abbey. It is a lovely, calm and relaxing place where you can have a walk. The gardens are amazing. The price worth every cent because its well organized and every member of the staff is lovely. We made a history tour with a polite and kind girl that expose everything with passion.Absolutely to visit!!!
