A dining room with old-country decor inspires a menu of Scandinavian eats & craft cocktails.
Coolest viking place in KC. And the first time in I find out they’re closing because our community isn’t supporting it. It’s delicious. Great bar menu. Unique and rich with flavor. Vikings forever. WTF is wrong with you Midwest. Religion is poisoning you against expanding your culture. Krokstrom is brilliant. You will be missed. This is a pick of my kaffekask...the best coffee cocktail in KC. Kansas City sometimes you get so close to growing up into a big city and then you show your juvenility.
So sad this place is closing. The menu might seem intimidating from the unique combination of flavors and/or ingredients, but trust me when I say the food will blow your mind. We had the trout potato cakes, and it was AMAZING, the flying jacob, the flavor combination blew me away, and the flank steak, which was so deliciously seasoned. Do yourself a favor and check this place out before it closes. Its a wonderful culinary experience.
AMAZING food. So sad they are closing at the end of October!
Food was amazing and the service was second to none. Im going back tomorrow.
The food here is delicious!! The decor is cute though minimal, but dont let that fool you about the meal. Well definitely be back. The chef here is very talented! The stroganoff and swedish meatballs were amazing.
Krokstrom is an awesome restaurant just minutes from downtown. It also has the best brunch Ive had in KC and its very affordable. I had the roasted beets, raggmunk and the traditional swedish breakfast. Everything was delicious, Im sure Ill return in the future.
The chic atmosphere is lovely, the traditional Swedish breakfast was exploding with flavor! The horseradish potato, cucumber salad and Gravlac center piece is surrounded by lightly sweetened Lefse and dill eggs. Super delicious together!
I have never had Scandinavian food before so this was a unique experience. I would definitely go back.
Absolutely fantastic. This is one of a few "MUST" restaurants. Lots of street and lot parking available right next to restaurant. We were promptly greeted and seated and then quickly attended to by our waitress. Good variety of selections from the dinner menu and happy hour menu without being overwhelming. Remember that Thursday us "happy hour" all day and evening. We had the mussels and flank steak. Totally delicious and prepared just as ordered. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will certainly go back.
Egg coffee is something different to try. No bitterness in that coffee! Not a lot to choose from for vegans, but do-able. Nice atmosphere.
We went here for the first time today for brunch and everything was fantastic! The smorgasbord was a phenomenal assortment of pickled vegetables, fish, and cheese, and the entrees were superb. The Swedish princess dessert and cardamom latte were wonderful. Very lovely atmosphere and good service. This is one of the best meals we’ve had in a while - we would easily eat here again!
The food was awesome, the atmosphere was clean and pleasant and the service was great. Definitely going back to try more of their food.
Came once for brunch and once for dinner. Staff was a big awkward, but the food was wonderful.
Delicious Scandinavian Food. I had the Smörgasbörd due to my gluten and soy issues. While the crackers pictured did contain gluten, they inquired about my issues and brought out piping hot gluten free bread. The mustard sauce was hot and spicy, the paté flavorful and slightly tart. House red wine was a bold blend with fruity and chocolatey notes. All the meats, cheeses, and veggies paired well and were fresh.Meal itself was moderately priced. Spent about $65 for my dish and wine while my wife had a Swedish Fish soda and Swedish Meatballs after a Fried Beets appetizer. Cozy yet still slightly trendy atmosphere.
The space is charming, the service is delightful and the food is delicious, adventurous, and eye-appealing! They have a great happy hour and generous pours on wine 🍷🍾🥂
We had a great experience here. Its a little pricey, but everything was worth the price. We shared a smorgasbord and I had the Flying Jacob, which I was skeptical of because of the bananas. I shouldnt have been. The chicken was amazing and the banana tempered by the other flavors. The drinks were to notch as well.My only complaint about them is that they keep begging for patronage on social media...saying they will close unless they get more business. It just seems to be a bit desperate. Adapt your business model if its not working.
Portions were fairly small but it was amazing nonetheless. Would go back in a heartbeat!
I think I may not be a huge fan of Scandinavian food, but I did enjoy my food! I wish the servings had been bigger as I was not completely satisfied after eating. I wish we had gotten an appetizer!I think this place is great for a lite lunch or snack! The atmosphere was super cute and their music selection was fantastic. Our waiter was super sweet and a real treat! Overall pretty satisfied, just wish servings were a little bigger!Definitely will be back to explore the menu a little more.
At first glance the menu here seems composed of foods whose tastes are completely unidentifiable, which makes ordering a challenge. Order anything. Seriously. You will NOT be disappointed. "Comfort food" is the perfect description of the wonderful cuisine available here, and if you plan around happy hour its pretty easy to try a number of different dishes at once fairly inexpensively. I will definitely be back to sample the menu items my friends and I didnt manage to get to yet!TL;DR Try it, youll love it!
Had a wonderful evening and meal tonight. We tried a bit of everything - potato sausage, salads, salmon and the meatballs among other items! Service was excellent and attentive at all the right moments. Previously had lunch here but love the dinner even more. Definitely a hidden gem that deserves all accolades it gets. Food was well seasoned and salmon was flavorful and perfectly cooked. We will be back again and support this lovely restaurant!
We love coming here for any meal. The food is delicious and you cant find it anywhere else in KC. Recommended especially for a nice night out.
Absolutely loved everything. Alex was a perfect server. The traditional breakfast was a great choice and the Semla, egg bun was delightful. Coffee drinks awesome!!!!
I enjoy trying new cuisines, so I tried this place on a whim while visiting KC and ... well, I love everything about it. The food was outstanding, the drinks stellar, the bartender was so helpful and friendly, the atmosphere was superb, and the music was badass. I am also wild about the exterior of the building. If this restaurant was in my city, I would be a regular. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Ate there for happy hour with a group of 9. Everything was reasonably priced, service was good, food was great. We shared several items off the happy hour menu and also ordered the smorgasbord. I ordered the pork belly open faced sandwich and it was delicious. There seemed to be plenty of street parking and parking behind their building as well.
Amazing spot, amazing food, decor, and services. First time and was very impressed. Lets help support this amazing local business!
My wife is swedish so it was pretty awesome to be there with her family and have some of the dishes that they grew up eating. Food was delicious and the desert was off the chain! I would recommend the princess torte. Oh so good!
My family is from Sweden its always fun to eat and see things from my childhood. Ill go back to sample more of there menu!
First time. I liked the place, food mmm probably I will need to give a second chance. However, the pork belly was great. The bread that comes with the pork belly feels elastic/gummy. We didnt have a good server thats why friend decided to skip dessert.
I dined here with a large group of neighbors and we had a great time. The drinks were a show on their own and presentation was on point. I shared a potato appetizer with a friend and enjoyed the green bean salad and a bowl of carrot soup with dill olive oil. Everything was delicious. My friend ordered the mushroom strudel and told me I had to try it even though I detest mushrooms and - wow - its the only mushroom dish I could ever see myself ordering on purpose. Our server, Alex, was super quick, accommodating, and he has a great sense of humor. Were fortunate to have such an impressive, unique restaurant in Kansas City.
Delicious food, with a unique flair, in comparison with other local offerings. Revisited for brunch shortly after a dinner here. Was a bit disappointed that the "pastry" indicated with the Swedish American breakfast turned out to be lefse, after we ordered it separately as a starter - an alert of the duplication would have been nice, but did not seriously impact my enjoyment of the food that was delicious overall. Best place to try reliable mead choices.
My mom was born and raised in Sweden, so I grew up very much immersed in Scandinavian culture and visited Sweden countless times throughout my childhood years. When my husband and first I moved to Kansas City and heard there was a Scandinavian restaurant in town, we made a point to stop in. It was absolutely amazing. We have since transitioned to a plant-based diet and hadnt been back.Upon hearing that Krokstrom was having a rough time, I made a reservation for Valentines Day a week in advance online for my husband and I. I made a note that we were both vegan and would greatly appreciate any sort of accommodations. I thought they would maybe tweak 1 or 2 things on their menu to cater to our needs, so I ate a snack before arriving (thinking there wouldnt be much wed be able to eat).We arrived a couple minutes before our reservation at 8pm. The host immediately asked if we were the vegan couple and said that he would alert the owner that we had arrived. We were seated and told that the owner had prepared a full course meal especially for us (none of which was on their menu). I sat there in awe as each course was brought out one after the other (5 total). The amount of effort and care put into our meal was incredible. Each dish was absolutely delicious, and I can honestly say that Ive never had a vegan meal that good at a restaurant. The last course was brought out by the owner and chef herself, giving us a chance to meet her and thank her for the amazing experience she and her staff provided us.Krokstrom has proved that they truly care about their customers and the food they prepare. They literally rolled out the Red Carpet for us. Ive never been treated that well at any restaurant. We will most definitely be back and spreading the word around. If you havent checked them out, please do. It is worth every penny. You wont be disappointed!
Everything was absolutely delicious! Definately going back for the salmon. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to the menu.
Friendly, good food, lots of regular customers that love the place! The flank steak and sauce I chose was very good.
My favorite restaurant in kansas city! Creative, delicious and consistent. Everything is outstandingly yummy and full of surprises.
First time here for brunch was great. Delicious food, bottomless mimosas and friendly service.10/13 Update: Changing my 5 star review to 3. Ive been here several times now and the food was great as always. The service, however, left much to be desired; waitstaff was very inattentive to their only table at the time. After excellent service on previous occasions from Shannon, todays visit was a huge letdown. For the price, it was not worth the drive.
Went for the prix fixe celebration of beets. Both the dishes and drinks were very well thought out and presented in addition to being completely delicious. Both chef and bartender clearly really enjoy what they do. Crane brewing makes a really fun beet beer. 100% would recommend. Will definitely be back the next time Im in KC to try the regular menu as well. Also, although it was a set menu, the owners made special twists on the dishes to accommodate the vegetarian diners that were with us.
Food is ok. Oysters were horrible, 4 oysters for 15$ on a burnt toasted bread with old lettuce in the middle. The curried chicken had a very small piece, did not worth 25$. It came with Jasmine rice not well cooked. I had the wild mushroom strudel, it was ok. We also had pear cider, that was good. Service needs work, not bad but no friendly or inviting at all. I expected more for a place that has a beautiful exterior and nice pictures. 👎🏼
Unique experience in dining, from the ambience to the food... thoroughly enjoyed!
I just had brunch here for the first time and it was lovely. They have an awesome section of unique breakfast Items and creative drinks. Very quaint interior.
Ive been here three times once for late night drinks, for dinner, and Saturday lunch. All three times I experienced wonderful service. Their drinks are inventive and delicious which you can say also for the food. Speaking of, it is a mix of classic Danish with modern flavors and plating. Some of the best food Ive had in Kansas City. The environment is warm and welcoming with a variety of places to sit.
The food was fantastic. We got the fried beets appetizer, which was great. The main dishes were tasty. The cocktail menu was unique. The staff was friendly and attentive. We have been here a few time before and look forward to coming back.
I had a craving for swedish meatballs so I decided to try this place. I was not disappointed! Everything was authentic, delicious and the portions were decent, not too small. The atmosphere is comfy. I loved the antiques and tasteful decor. I will definitely recommend this place to friends and family. 😊
Amazing food! I strongly recommend this restaurant, especially if youre looking for something new or unique to try. Dont let the menu intimidate you, the workers are very helpful and patient. I had the house red wine with my meal and it was delicious. They also have an area with cute and unique retail items for purchase.
Holy moly! What a wonderful place! Had a few hours to spend while waiting on my daughter and popped in there and what a nice place they have! I was having such a hard time deciding on what to eat because EVERYTHING sounded so good! Its a "must" to eat there! Trust me!
Food, drinks and service was good but nothing mind blowing. Food did not taste as authentic as I hoped and was a bit pricey. Biff Cheek Stroganoff pictured.
Great, friendly staff. The food is mostly Swedish but not completely traditional.
By FAR my favorite dining experience in KC! My husband and I visited last weekend and I was just so enthralled with this whole place. I love how the decor makes it feels as though someone has invited me into their home for a meal. The drinks were wonderful, appetizer was awesome, dinner was divine! All of the adjectives!! 13/10 will be coming back.
Delightful swedish market/restaurant. Goy a smorgasbørd, chips and dips, and Danish mead flight. All delightful.
Fantastic authentic food with amazing service. We started with a flight of aquavit the traditional spirit and a flight of mead. Followed by the Smorgasbord and a Zucchini and whitefish salad which was uniquely decadent.
Great scandavian cuisine in heart of the midwest. So many great dishes and cocktails. In a great area of KC. A must try for food lovers! Great for brunch too!
