Udon noodles, rice dishes & other refined Japanese eats are the draw at this compact, stylish venue.
Koya City in Konya
Description
Privilege
I had a fantastic duck noodles in a delicious broth. We also had a tempura plate for share, that was great too. Definitely will go again!
MoreOrdered the Buta Hiya Atsu and it was very flavourful! Just wish the serving was a bit bigger. For dessert we got the ice cream sandwich and it was delicious! Such interesting flavours and a great way to end our meal ♥️
MoreSeating in to have lunch. Ordered tempura udon. About £15. 1 tempura floating on the soup with some Udon noodle. No wifi while i could see available connection under the restaurants name. I was told by a rude and slow lady staff, wifi is only for staff.
MoreI enjoyed my udon soup, which wasn’t too salty. However service wasn’t very welcoming and I was charged £2 more than the fares indicated on the menu. Unfortunately I was too in a hurry and only noticed it when I got home.
MoreA very simple and authentic menu,The pork starter was delicious and would highly recommend. Turns out I don’t really like udon noodles, not my cup of tea (a bit toughBut the soup it was in was nice. Lovely service and it was a really chill vibe though. I wouldn’t go again.I wouldn’t recommend the shrimp heads, they’re literally what it says (the part you rip off and wouldn’t normally eat). It was deep fried in a batter and was a bit taste less.
MoreGreat noodle bar in the city.Gluten free menu is available on request
The genmaicha tea was great, highly recommended. We had the kitsune and tenzaru udons. Would recommend cold udon as it tastes better to me.One of the staff members was professional and helpful. However some others left us wondering if we are not welcome at all...
MoreCame here for my 30th birthday with the family. Amazing food, something really different and had some delightful tipples. Fair warning, some of the beers only come in half pints...
MoreI saw a waitress was wearing a t-shirt with a ‘Koya Mail’ logo on the back, in the style of Royal Mail; cute, but perhaps a bit too accurate, since the service was as slow as Royal Mail at their worst. We were seated and given water, but that was the last of it. We could not order, couldn’t get any attention from the staff. We tried the QR code on our table, but it only allowed us to pay for our (non-existentorders. Looking around at those tables with empty glasses, and those tables trying even harder than we were to attract some kind of service, we decided to give up and go elsewhere. I’m not blaming the staff, but more the management who need to streamline the haphazard system, or if they’re unable to then to embrace the technological options they already have at their fingertips. We shouldn’t have to waste a chunk of our evening out trying and failing to order something as simple as beer and udon.
MoreThe tempura is massive, the udon nice. The staff could only give us one hour due to being busy but with no booking. We probably stayed two hours, but they didnt bother us. Nice vibe. The outside seating is under a roof.
MoreAfter a couple of terrible food in City of London (gastropubs), we went for the Japense Ramen to compensateFantastic choice, great mushroom ramen and a pricey but if you are into roasted flavoured teas worth it Kuromamecha (300 ml); White fish ramen was quite good as well
MoreTasty noodles, broth decent and the Happy Ending ice cream sandwich a delight. Whilst the staff are pleasant they seem to be in their own world and not checking in at all on tables. Had to go up to ask for things twice after waiting some time. Whilst the food is good the service puts me off coming back.
MoreIve tried a few noodle dishes here and theyve been great. Plus they do Kernel Table Beer. One of my fave beers, plus at 3% alcohol Im not worried about having one at lunch.
MoreFresh Udon noodles, you can taste the difference. Loved it! Tasty broth, tempura. The shrimp tempura is huge! Very friendly staff.
MoreGood noodles, authentic dashi soup, good price. Prawn tempura was huge, crispy and piping hot, really enjoyed it, would recommend.Nice touch to get free, filtered water
MoreVery disappointed. Came down to London because we love Koya so much but the seaweed salad is bitter, too much ginger and not properly cut. It’s at least 30 cm long and soaked with other seaweed that is not crunchy but too soft and tasted weird. The beef atsu atsu udon wasn’t those thin beef but two large pieces of braised beef. The flavour is not there and the udon used to have a very good texture but it’s not the same now. I would definitely not go here again if this is the standard. Maybe the Soho branch is better? Not sure now.
More13/07/22The main course udon meal was great alongside with the homemade pickles and amazing specials! There were only limited selections of soft drinks which was a shame. However, the food did take very long since the woman serving me forgot about my order and every time I would call for her she would ignore me and head towards the bar on her phone facing the other way. After finally getting her attention, she was quite rude and dismissive.Fortunately I called another person who was able to rectify the problem with her friendly customer service! I asked for the supervisor, which happened to be her, to report the inattentive service of her co worker and she was very friendly and apologetic. Amazing how she has to deal with incompetent co-workers who definitely need to be retrained or dismissed. The food was great and I would recommend! I was hesitant on writing this review but customers should be aware of poor management training for certain staff!
MoreOver priced, tiny portions.and fairly bland. Even though its an open kitchen watched 2 chefs putting ingredients into bowls with their bare hands. Lots of good Ramen place sin London and this is not one of them sorry guys!
MoreA comfy place for your udon cravings.
Stopped in here during a trip to London and I have to say it was absolutely worth it. The food was the best Japanese food Ive ever had, the staff were lovely and handled my allergies very well and the price was decent. Will absolutely be returning next time Im in the area! (Also re the picture, the rice dish looks far nicer than that when it comes out but I was so hungry I started eating it before I got a picture haha)
MoreI ordered the black sesame vinegar cold udon special, the udon & sauce were very yummy! The chashu was ok and I think the dishes were overpriced (2 udons for £35), but overall it’s a pretty ok experience!
MoreFood is always nice, but on this occasion we felt taken advantage of. The octopus tempura is delicious, but the portion size is insultingly small. Probably wont go back as often, unfortunately.
MoreAlways delicious broths but at this branch the food is very slow. It’s a shame they charge so much extra for things like pickles, which really should be complimentary. The toilets are also not very clean.
MoreCome to Bloomberg Arcade and Koya here about once a week, good vibes in/outside. Always easy to find a table without reservations. Staff are nice n friendly. Food wise I still prefer Kota Soho more - Big fan of Ten Toji Don, yet they don’t have it in this City branch. Classic Udons are the same.
MoreWas on the way bk home decided to get off Bank as I saved this place to visit. The Udon has great bite to it with the Tempura nicely battered and deep fried (it did get slightly soggywhich I expected to come separately. Staff was friendly and greeted us immediately since I guess it wasnt too busy for a Saturday evening. The Green Tea was flavourful and calming indeed 👍
MoreWhat a great service we got. Amazing staff! We had varied opinions on the food. We did not enjoy the pickled plums but I guess that is an acquired taste. The braised pork was delicious and so were the marinated mushrooms. The chicken wings were nothing special, quite bland. We ordered the duck hearts and we all liked them very much.As mains we had 3 Niku Great taste, sweet broth, amazing noodles and a bit portion of beef shin. However 1 of the bowls had a lot (a lotof fat.We also ordered the venison broth. While the flavour was good there was almost no deer at all to eat. Just 2 or 3 tiny bit that were so small that could be swallowed even without chewing.
MoreCustomer service:Very welcoming lady, very quick to assist.Food:The food was not exactly what I was expecting. I ordered the curry rice, and I was surprised to find whole uncut vegetables underneath. The sauce was not unbearable but I wouldnt say its worth £11.20. I found the portions to be on the smaller side and were not as filling. The side miso soup was quite salty.Interior:Everything is kept clean and organised. I really appreciated that. Heat lamps are installed in place if you chose to sit outside when its cold.
MoreTLDR; come here for some proper, authentic udons! A tad expensive but worth it over all. Don’t confuse this with Koya-ko which is a rip off (see my other review)Pretty much the only place in London with some proper, decent udon. These tastes freshly made with just the right amount of chew.We had the Sakana (fishand the Buta (porkbowls with a side of the braised pork belly. All of which were delicious in their own way. The Sakana was extremely light, in a good way. The braised pork was simply heavenly with that melt in your mouth feeling. There is a variety of broths and toppings to choose from too. What really makes the menu versatile is the ability to have the udon / soup served hot or cold. This is perfect for all weather and something I appreciated tonight as it was pretty cold!Atmosphere-wise, Koya offers covered outdoor and indoor seating. Both are decorated in neutral tones for a comfortable dining experience. The heaters outdoors made it a pleasant meal despite the cold weather.Slight down side to Koya is that the price is slightly on the expensive side. I have to note that this is already much much better value than their Broadway Market (see my Koya-ko reviewbranch which takes a street food theme of smaller portions but charging full price.
MoreThe mushroom broth was warm and comforting. Loved the sweet walnut miso, and the udon was perfectly al dente. The tofu was crispy on the outside and soft, complemented perfectly salty pickle and sauce.
MoreTempura is excellent - probably the best Ive had in london. The cold dipping broth however could have had a bit more flavour. Udon texture is great!
MoreNice outside area and clean toilets. Tempura veg for start was lush but worth £9.30? Absolutely not. Mains flavourless and yes, massive prawn but the batter was soggy and mainly in the ‘broth’ (basically just warm water). ‘Poached eggs’ (in the shellfor £2.30… what a joke. Used a whole thing of soy sauce and too much seasoning on the table to make the “broth” taste of something.Wont recommend, definitely won’t come back.
MoreCouldnt give more than 2 stars since the udon was too hard and overall the food was not good. Thought would be bettter than marugame since its more pricey. I gotta give to the breadcrumbs for the tempura because they were good and make sure if you come here only order these because the udon wasnt good. Not recommended for the udon. Marugame has better ones and more worth it!! Not recommended unfortunately from me better go to marugame. Ive tried so many japanese food and this is not for me. Cheers! I hope this helps!
MoreHad an excellent time at Koya City! Ate the Buta Hiya - Atsu, it was divine. The side of tempura shrimp was very delicious, light and crispy batter, not heavy at all. I will definitely return. Very friendly staff and there was a heat lamp for those sitting outside which was very much appreciated. I would also recommend the fermented tea!
MoreDecent and tasty Udon, tempura was bad though as it was soggy! Would prefer if the Tempura was left out of the bowl to retain the crisp of the batter.Loved the soft boiled Egg, perfectly cooked, creamy and vibrant Yolk!
MoreSet in one of the only areas you’d want to eat in near Bank station, Koya City has an outdoor seating area that consists of benches. We were a group of 11, so we were seated outdoors under the current regulations. Inside there are smaller tables and it is air conditioned very well. When we were there music was low volume but played songs from artists including Robbie Williams, fountains of Wayne and Natasha bedingfield.Everyone was given chopsticks and one napkin each as standard, and they were generous with the cold tap water on a hot day. No extras are on the table - no additional napkins, dipping sauces, or bits that you might expect in a Japanese restaurant. The menu is accessed through QR code and orders are taken at the table by a server. No real detail is given on the menu and googling will not necessarily bring up an accurate picture of food, so best to ask server or look for Google maps location-specific pics.House white is delicious but a bottle of the cheapest wine is £46 which is extremely overpriced for the cheapest bottle.Cold udon noodles come on the side of a simple broth. They are deceptively filling!Katsudon is the best thing in the menu for meat eaters, and the katsu pork is a delicious starter! Miso soup that comes in the side is rich and comes in a container that makes it easy to tackle while you tuck into rice.Definitely an improvement would be some table sauces or toppings to sprinkle on your udon or rice dish.Overall really lovely experience - wouldn’t recommend seating if you have back problems though!
MoreBest place for udon in London. Wish they would have more branches around London. A chewy and soft udon noodle with clear yet tasty soup. Satisfying meal anytime.
MoreCame here as a suggestion from a friend, and was delighted by the selection. Even the gluten free selection still had plenty for me to choose from, though the star of the night has got to have been the strawberry oysters that were on the specials board! Absolutely worth a visit
MoreMy 3rd time in Koya and each time has been positive - Service is always great and polite, not overly attentive. Outdoor seating is spacious and comfortable. Additional bonus that the bathrooms are very clean!I decided to try their special "ham hock, green beans and mustard leaves" this time. The broth is a bit plain/simple and clear, and doesnt taste too salty. I didnt like the raw green beans and mustard leaves as much and I prefer the other "traditional" udons Ive had:- Niku Hiya Atsu - Beef (Cold Udon with Hot Broth(£11.90)- Saba - Smoked Mackerel and green leaves (£11.40)I also got the genmaicha which had about 4 small cups and was £5 - nothing to write home about. There is service charge as well. A suggestion: It would be nice if tempura or other deep fried items be kept separate from the broth as it would get soggy too fast!I will definitely be back to try other options, though I might stick to the more traditional options!
MoreAmazing! Quality ingredients, reasonably priced. Nothing better than a warm hug of udon on a chilly London day. Looking forward to coming back!
MoreAbsolutely delicious, fresh udon noodles! We also had a bunch of small plates, like monk fish, katsu pork, seaweed salad and tempura. It was all so good! I can’t wait to go back. There is decent outdoor space with heaters. Wish they had better beer options and dessert.
MoreSimple but delicious udon noodles. I think some people might feel that some dishes arent packed with flavour, but thats how its supposed to be. If youre after bags of flavour and want to try the udon, then go for the lamb cumin. Otherwise, was very happy with the beef.
MoreWe had a lovely lunch at the City of London branch of Koya. We had tried to get in to this restaurant pre-covid but it was too busy. We ate pickles, marinated mushrooms, vegetable tempura, udon noodles with smoked mackerel and the seasonal vegetable and curry rice donburi bowl. Everything was beautifully presented and very tasted. We sat outside which was nice. Id definitely go back again. The staff were helpful. I liked it so much that I wrote a review for my blog.
MoreThe udon noodles is undercook !! Too hard to chew on and the dipping sauce is not tasty, I feel like the instant sauce from Japanese supermarket will taste better than their udon dipping sauce. The fried tofu and braised pork was good, just disappointed the udon texture is unpleasant.
MoreThe service and some small dishes were excellent but the quality of their main offer ‘Udon’ was quite disappointing. I’ve been a fan of Koya since it first opened in Soho before the closure. They seem to have come back with more outlets, kudos to them for the success but I remember the quality of Udon much higher in the old days (or am I just being old and beautifying the past😂tempura was too crispy and crunchy, it totally missed the subtle fluffiness of well fried tempura butter and stock was too salty without much umami🤔
MoreGreat place for an after work catch up, with quick, attentive service. The prawn tempura was delicious, wouldve been even better if the tempura prawn was served on the side and not soggy from the broth!
MoreI cant rate this place enough. Ive been here so many times lately and introducing it to anybody who is willing! I love sitting at the bar and watching the chefs cook. I recommend the pork and miso or duck hotpot. For the pork and miso get the cold udon with hot broth, that way the uson noodles retain its delicious chewiness. Get the udon with an extra side of tanuki batter! Lovely bit of crunchiness texture.
MoreThe specials never disappoint - rump cap tataki, and udon always cooked the way I like it. Only let-down was the thick battered prawn that was meant to be my prawn tempura. I will still go back, the udon and the specials are just too good.
MoreAmazing food, great settings and fair price consider the location. Texture of udon is just right. Good presentation. Egg was spot on and lovely colour. Some unusual ingredients that i dont expect to findd at this price point.slightly understaff but we went offpeak during weekend. highly recommended. definitely reaching "Rarity" level in UK.
MoreScallops from the special was absolutely amazing! Great dish for a scallops lover like me! Asparagus was special as well. Tempura prawn with tempura vegetables was good (veges was I guess just warmed up before serving but portion was very generous with hot broth on the side), and to finish milk ice cream with beans and honey... OMG that was incredible!
MoreKoya’s much anticipated first outpost at the Bloomberg Arcade serves up a largely similar menu as their Soho location. Staples such as udon and small eats are equally well executed. The tempura remains one of the very best in London. Don’t be put off by the prawn heads - these are crunchy and tasty and make fantastic snacks to go with your beer!
