Modern & classic Christian artworks in contemporary spaces amid 19th-century church remains.
I loved how an old church was integrated into a modern building.
Closed when we went but able to see the bit that interested us (the ruinsthrough the gate. Impressive building but rather bleak from the outside
Unfortunately it was closed for a few weeks, but there is a viewing area around the corner from the main entrance, where you can look at some of the ruins
Amazing museum, well worth a visit, I especially found the excavations on the ground floor really nicely presented and set up for visitors. There are several floors, so much to see , also nice to see the reading room they have set apart as the guidebook is a very extensive read.Staff very helpful & friendly at reception.
The person at building entry denied me entry due to my mask. Their claim was that my mask is not "medical grade" which is both absurd and unfounded. Their reasoning was that it looked like a cloth mask. Of course it did, because its a multi-layer mask with a cloth outer face for comfort. Why a museum would deny entry to patrons for such an immature reason is a mystery, but in any case, as an architecture student who was very excited to see this museum, to say this was dissapointing would be an understatement.
Beautiful museum and you got a cool little book about the exhibition
My favorite museum in Cologne - quiet, peaceful, breathtaking. Go by yourself even!Today there was a live classical music trio playing in one of the rooms - the music echoing through the entire place - magical!
Beautifully designed museum and very interesting exhibit, but absolutely infuriating method of getting information about the pieces. Half the pieces only have a number. The other half have nothing at all. Where they exist, the numbers aren’t in order. You then have to look at a 163-page(!PDF that goes room by room telling you what each piece is. Except in the book the numbers are in order, and the book also has many pieces that are nowhere to be found in the exhibit. Non-numbered pieces are described too, you’re just supposed to engage in a scavenger hunt to figure out what the text is referring to. Please, just add brief text next to each piece!
Beautifully designed museum. The only thing that I found disturbing is that guards kept following you everywhere. Kinda uncomfortable if you want to take pictures or enjoy your visit.
Kolumba is art museum in Köln, it stands where once was a Gothic church which was destroyed during the second World War. Designed by Architect Peter Zumthor, a Pritzker Prize winner. This is a must visit for art and architecture lovers.!
Museum of Jewish artefacts plus a most interesting arcaeological excavation under the former church.
Exhibition almost as original as an architectural design. Hands down its one of the best museums in the city of Cologne.
Impressive museum and architecture project from the pritzker awarded architect Peter zumthor, it needs a visit and even if you don’t want to see the exposition you can still have a glimps of the archeological rests
Very interesting museum. I like the combined staging of modern and religious art since it is quite unique.
The building itself deserves 6 stars. Absolutely an amazing architecture exploring experience. Dont forget to visit the catacombs and walk around to visit the chapel! The collection includes an amazing Stefan Lochner painting. However, the presentation inside is unclear with maps in a free guide book and numbers that are missing or out of order. The descriptions are very academic - beyond comprehension for your average visitor.
I went to Cologne as I found flight tickets for £55 return and it was a bargain! The downside of it was it was there and back in under 20 hours so packed our running shoes. This was in the afternoon and the building itself was interesting. Entry was around €10 and was spread across three floor. I think my friend and I were there for about and hour and half. Thought provoking to say the least and definitely worth a visit.
I stopped in for a table and meal for 1 on a night off in Frankfurt. I had the schitzel, unfortunately it was pork and not veal (I really wanted veal!). But it was good nonetheless. The beers were large, in charge, and delicious. The servers did not speak English but we were able to communicate and they were friendly towards me anyway.
An architectural masterpiece. Such a beautifully crafted building, Zumthor and his firm have done a fantastic job in conserving the history of the site and the previous buildings. A series of well considered spaces and details provide the artwork shown here with a subtle yet scenic environment. The best bit however is the open chapel, definitely worth walking through.

The building and the history behind its construction is impressive. The exhibition was a bit disappointing. Not the works of art, but the way it was presented. There were no tags next to each piece, making the identification a very hard task...
Amazing museum, quite different to any other Ive been to.
Great museum must have seen
One of the best architecture buildings in Europe. Amazing atmosphere. The simplicity, but at the same time complex concept that use Peter Zumthor make you feel like you are in a sacred place.
Beautiful museum. I could only view some of the excavations and the rest of the museum was closed due to updating the exhibits
Fascinating objects set out beautifully in a stunning building. Staff were friendly and helpful. What I didnt like so much was that there are no labels on any exhibits. Visitors are given a book with details about the contents of each room, but I found this impractical (especially since several rooms are deliberately quite darkand distracting from the flow of the visit.
This is an outstanding piece of architecture. Cant say much about exhibitions quality, but just the building is worth a visit.
A unique museum with the modern side by side with the ancient. Many beautiful artifacts were exhumed in Cologne, some from the first century, and are exhibited with thoughtful (and thought-provokingmodern pieces. Beautiful architecture, helpful staff. Highly recommended.
A wonderful museum in which the unique architecture as well as the silence let you appreciate each exhibit. A really peacefull experience. The exhibitions are also quite unique, mixing contemporary arts with historic pieces. I would suggest to anyone. The price is clearly worth the hour/hour and a half you will spend there!
great architecture, nice renovation. keep the story well.
Sublime. Blown away. Perfectly curated exhibition. Master building. Love the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor’s work. A must visit gallery. I could easily live in this building.
One of the greatest museums! All the details in the building ans exposition so carefully and tasteful selected, I went twice in two weeks. Also ticket prices is more than reasonable (around 5 euro). The info brochure is for free and almost a book with nice design.
An clever juxtaposition of old and new, ancient and modern. The art can be quite odd but the building is magnificent.
Absolutely the most elegant museum that I have ever been. Incredible architecture details and art. There is a unique atmosphere.
The Roman archaeological area is amazing. The displays in the rest if the museum compare the old with the new. Very nice guide to read along with. Very organized museum. I have been to this museum twice, the second visit was better than the first. Simply because I saw it differently and appreciated it even more.
My favorite Spot in Köln, I make sure to visit this museum every time I am there - I am in love with the architecture of the building, I always enjoy walking in. The staff working there is super friendly and being in this museum gives you always a good feeling. The reading room inside the museum is a place where you can enjoy reading and thinking.
Lovely building. Beautiful in every way. The staff are a disgrace. Ive never seen such rudeness at closing time. They deserve to be fired en masse.
A modern museum in the centre of Cologne, containing the ruins of a big gothic church, many exhibits, mainly of archeological and ethnografic nature, but also pieces of art dating from the 1st to 21st centuries.
Unique collection. Great gallery layout.
piece of art by Gottfried Böhm and Peter Zumthor
One of the best exhibition/museum I’ve ever visited .... an amazing hidden gem in the city centre. Highly highly recommended.
Interesting space and architecture. The exhibition inside is less interesting but nevertheless worth a stroll through.
The absolute most beautiful museum I’ve ever seen. The staff were very friendly really nice as well and the student price is very affordable.
One of the most inspiring musea I have ever been to. Visitors become part of the art themselves in this minimalistic concrete building, built upon the ruins of an ancient church.
Didnt have a clue what was going on because there isnt a word of English, but the people standing around were fantastically helpful (even though they looked rather serious). The museum is really excellent and the curation and display of art is outstanding.
Nice Museum, super friendly people. But there is no English guide there. Better know some German. Anyway I like the building itself. super cool
Contemplating the centuries, even millennia, of layers of architecture that are the foundations of this place sets the mind to wonder the ephemera and eternities of human culture. The art exhibitions in the lobby and upstairs continue this theme; during my visit there were interesting juxtapositions of both ancient and modern works sometimes without any obvious thematic connection, sometimes commenting on each other, always provoking feelings or thoughts.
Interesting building with good architecture but it can be a bit underwhelming when you see that many of the materials have cracks in them which Zumthor probably didnt calculate. The doorman was supposed to open the door for me... which he didnt and the atmosphere in the exhibition rooms is a bit off as there is staff in every single room and it feels like theyre watching every step you take. The reading room was my personal favourite.
Very nice museum where history and modern art is naturally tight together.Located in the center, cheap tickets and much to have a look at.Definitely worth to visit.
Kolumba is a very special museum which blends architecture, art and religion in one. Designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the Museum was built on the ruins of a Gothic church Kolumba and it was wrapped by new wall inside the lower 2 floors of the Museum as a part of the exhibition in a form of ruins. A small chapel is also designed next to the ruin. The display in the 3-floor museum is also interesting as there are both traditional religious art artefacts with some contemporary art installations, placing side by side or even crossing-over each other. Certainly, you cannot miss the White minimalistic exhibition spaces and its small garden designed by Zumthor.
An amazing space. It is a must to go and see when you visit Cologne. The architecture is (one ofthe main events. The floor looks like it floats... the stairs are inspirational and the art is impressive (i am not in to such historic pieces, but they have some amazing modern pieces to satisfy everyones preference). As a very side note and observation... go to the bathroom near the entrance. The interior are all steel, but you would never really notice it... amazing.enjoy.
