Established in 1908, this refuge for native waterfowl offers a 10-mile auto tour & photo blinds.
Currently closed due to lack of staff according to a sign on their entrance.(Bathrooms still accessible though)
Beautiful experience
Its beautiful in its own way.. heads up though.. these are actual caves.. you climb into them. Some safety gear is suggested and even required for some caves. The ranger was extremely friendly and helpful. Camping was first come first serve. 10$ a night clean.. quiet.. with real bathrooms and running water.
Lake bed near visitor center completely dry. Sump 1B area on east side has plenty of water and birds, deer.Picnic area across road from visitor center very pleasant place to relax. The Discovery Marsh trail head, no water so no waterfowl.
There is no water therefore no birds. Otherwise is nice.
Picked the wrong time to visit, nothing going on.
Mich of the water has dried up, so there wasnt much in the way of marshes/mudflats. However, what we found in and around the refuge proved to be very productive birding.
Had a great walk!
The First Refuge in America..Its sad the the Water issue has had such a huge impact and where the Migrating birds can rest during there migration..The local population has been hit hard by drought and mis appropriation of Water and funding..Still a wonderful place to visit.
The lake is dry. Not many birds
My husband and I adore this Wildlife refuge. The land is beautiful, and the wind adds a magical touch. Weve captured some incredible photos, and always enjoy visiting here. Its one of our favorite special places.
Visitor center was still closed from the COVID-19 restrictions. With that being said, still worth a quick stop, very picturesque and nice views.Lots of birds, make sure you take a listen.
Very beautiful sunset with many birds singing around!
Low water levels in some areas
Great place to get incredible pictures of wildlife
Short trail up to great viewpoint
This is a beautiful wildlife preserve. Its just located in desolate area but definitely worth the visit if you enjoy observing nature/ bird watching 👌
Great for birding, even at this "slower" time of year. Wish birds werent hunted here though as makes them hard to observe and photograph.
Awesome adventure We will be going back
Fantastic, so many birds! Eagles, falcons, ducks
This place in the California-Oregon border has a different beauty altogether. The view of Mount Shasta is breathtaking in this sweeping landscape. Mainly a farm country, there is plenty to see and photograph. It is an winter heaven for raptors photography and landscapes. I visited for two days and already want to go back again before this winter (not much snowis passed. Just 6 hours drive from the heart of Silicone Valley, this place is a must visit for any nature lovers and enthusiasts.
we went during the annual bald eagle migration and it was beautiful! We counted 89 bald eagles!
Awesome refuge. I saw over a dozen species of birds and two coyotes. Love the place!
Saw one bald eagle on every pole!
Great place to see native and migrating birds.
Awesome place with amazing views.
Nice drive, several trail to walk.
This nwr is great. Walking trails. Auto route. Excellent visitors center. Facilities. We only get here a couple times a year. Wish it was more.
On the way to the Lava Beds.
Fabulous bird sanctuary.
This place is amazing! Fall and winter are the best times to see tons of different birds including bald eagles!
Fabulous experience with all the birds and the view of Mt. Shasta in tge distance. Stunning
Wild needs more room.
Nice place for birding, benches and a trail
Beautiful National Wildlife Refuge.
Loved it all
I do photography and the refuge is my playground. You never know what you will see and the landscape is gorgeous as well.
Truly beautiful location with a variety of wildlife! Definitely worth a visit. You will not be disappointed.
Hidden gem. We always view something different every time we go
Awesome place with many helpful staff
Beautiful place, great for Bird watching!
Beautiful area. Lots of wildlife to see and photograph, especially if you like birds. Short drive off the main highway.
Beautiful wetland with lots of birds.
We really enjoyed our visit. Saw tons of birds! Saw many interesting insects, rodents and a mule deer. We really got lost in our surroundings.
Came here off season, so I didn’t get to see any eagles or anything “super super” cool however, we drove around and go to see lots of pretty birds just chilling. The amount of mosquitoes were frightening so we stayed inside the car, but we were still able to see plenty from the car. Got to great shots of birds too!
Desolate and alone. Absolutel no Wildlife to hear or see except for the occasional bird over head. Altogether peaceful and Serene.
Nice place to stop and stretch and forget about the rest of your day. Plan on spending time here enjoying the scenery and wildlife especially the waterfowl
Wonderful place to visit in the wintertime if you want to see bald eagles, rough-legged hawks, ferruginous hawks and prairie falcons. It can be cold & windy so dress warm; down jacket, scarf, hat, good gloves.
Beautiful scenery. Staff very friendly, helpful, and knowledge.
Friendly and informative staff. Nice displays.
