Kirbuster Museum - Museum in Kirkwall, United Kingdom
On a parr with Mary Annes cottage. Its free too left a donation probably inspired by the friendly goats. Look really comfortable to live in if you can do without modern day electronics
Fascinating history, really well presented.
Fantastic place. Tels the story of early everyday life on Orkney. Everyone who visits Orkney should pop in to the museum. It needs to be supported and would benefit from people leaving donations. I could spend a whole day here without losing interest. Guide is amazing.
A very nice and interesting Museum - staff are very friendly. Its like a time travel back to 1900.
A fantastic little folk museum, well worth a look 😊
Absolutely wonderful visit. We just sort of stumbled across it, I had no idea how atmospheric, educational, and beautiful Kirbister Farm Museum would be! Highly recommend this to all. A real jewel on the island ❤
An enjoyable visit to a really authentic view into Orkney life. The kids loved it, learnt a lot. I have experience living in old Orkney cottages and could relate much of what I saw to my own knowledge. An enjoyable 2 hrs, young kids will need to be watched like a hawk... but will find much to interest them.
What a gem of a place, Absolutely fantastic untouched original farm, History you can touch and smell. Free entry but please give generously so this " Museum" can stay open for future years, 5*
Love this, well done for keeping alive the local history
This may be one of my favourite places in Orkney. It does have parking. The main building is the last un-restored example of a traditional firehoose in Northern Europe. Do not miss this site and it’s fun for kids. The house is quite amazing with the real peat fire burning inside, it’s simply enchanting. It’s a free museum to get inside this awesome place. Out back is a magical fairy forest to walk through, a trow forest as they would say here. The trows have twisted and yanked down the trees in this area and have hidden some of the items they’ve stolen too! There’s also a putting green, I believe you must bring your own club and ball. Stop here, don’t pass it by.
This is an absolutely fascinating museum providing a glimpse into the way of life for Orcadians in years gone by. The staff are very welcoming and happy to answer questions and chat.
Amazing little gem of history, spooky but definitely worth a visit
Tremendous little insight into Old Orkney farm life. Its a small site and not far from the Birsay cliff and shore scenery. Dogs cant go inside, theres parking and its free.
A most interesting place for a look into the past, and a great place to take children to let them see how different life was from today. I visit about once a year to enjoy not only the cottage but the surrounding grounds.
Small snapshot picture of how life was on a croft
Always pop in here when we come to Orkney. Unique preserved "firehouse" where the smoke from the peat fire drifts up to the ceiling and through a hole in the roof. Farm museum dating back centuries.
An amazing step back in time, the surprise being how recently people lived here.
Authentic time capsule of rural smallholding still lived in until the 1960s. Real peat fire takes you right back there.
Gorgeous, beautiful place
Awesome. Its fascinating for someone who loves history and wants to see that old life which extremely rare but this is one place where you can see a room which was built in 1600s and still in same shape. Amazing
We all loved it! So much history and we loved the fireplace!!! We were astonished. It is a great place to be able to immerse yourself in the past. We donated and we hope all visitors would do the same to preserve this lovely museum. Lastly, thank you to the lovely man who explained the use of the glass bottles in the fence. :)
This is an absolutely lovely little museum it really feels as if it has just been left as it was, We really enjoyed our visit.
Lovely quick wee museum to show what old dwellings were like. Step back in time. Honestly could be a 5 minute stop and worth it, or longer if you would like to roam a bit more. Friendly staff and free!
Great little museum, fun hour exploring local history
Free museum, quite limited opening hours but beautiful bike ride to get there. Quite small, but very interesting, though the kitchen was smoky. Pitch and putt included, good fun.
Just love this place
An absolute gem. I spent ages here, exploring and thoroughly enjoying the farm. I had the place to myself. I had a sense that I wasnt alone which was a little scary. I would certainly return to visit again.
What a little gem. Lovely staff member greeted me and gave an overview before letting me wander around. Do stop by. Ideal stop on a cycle tour.
Fascinating place to visit
Free attraction great for families, couples in fact fascinating for all.
Well worth a look beautiful place x
Another good orkney museum lots of old farm implements etc same as corrigal farm museum o.i.c gonna shut it so please leave a donation good piece of orcadian history
Free to visit traditional Orkney farming croft. Items on display can be handled with care. Information boards available in each room. Small shop selling souvenirs and delicious Orkney Icecream in a variety of flavours.
Unlike most museums, nothing is hidden behind glass here and most if not all, feels very authentic. So you are able to "live" and "feel" the lives and experience of the people who used to live and work here. Well worth a visit.
Total hidden gem, really pleased to find this place, extremely interesting
Amazing, so well laid out, very informative, well worth a visit
Very cute small museum. Nice to visit.
Well worth a visit to this interesting time capsule, to see how farming life used to be like. Very atmospheric, with open peat hearth .
Free entry & car park, beautiful location, the garden is nearly as lovely as Happy Vally, we really enjoyed looking around taking in the sites an smells of a traditional stone cottage.Brian Flett was a really knowledgeable and friendly guide, you can tell he enjoys showing people around.I highly recommend a visit.
Really enjoyed my visit. Its a must do intresting to discover the old way of life.
Great place to visit and take in how life must have been for our ancestors. Even more amazing staff, so very helpful and courteous. Wonderful!
Found this amazing place completely by accident. It is like a walk through the fabric of time itself. The different stages of history in each room of the buildings. The fascinating artefacts and tools on display in their natural environments. Dont drive past, pull in, park up and check it out. It is quite captivating. Also it is mostly inside so excellent if weather is trying to dampen your holiday.
Great little museum worth a visit.
Great Gallery and permanent collection
Super place to learn about Orkney and old times. Good place to go with kids.
Great family visit.Free entry, very approachable friendly staff. Lots of local history here.Would cheerfully revisit.
So cool. Take time to see this relic of the past.
Loved it
Unglaublich beeindruckender Ort. Am interessantesten fand ich die steinernen Schlafkojen, die sich sein Skara Brae nur wenig verändert haben.
Une machine a remonter dans le temps. Un lieu authentique !
