Inchicore Rd, Kilmainham, Dublin 8, D08 RK28, Ireland, Ros Comain
Prison museum where many of Ireland's political prisoners were incarcerated, tortured and executed.
Our guide Anthony was absolutely brilliant. So passionate and informed about the history. He really made it such an amazing experience. Please keep hiring people like this as they make the experience for all so much better ! Well done OPW.
This experience was one of the best we have done in Dublin. The guided tour helped us get to know the history of the country and time flied while going around the prison. Absolutely loved it!
An amazing and at times very emotional tour of a building steeped in Irish history, from the famine right up to Irish independence. A must see for anyone visiting Dublin. Booking tickets online in advance is essential.
Intense experience with a great tour and museum after! The only downside is that apparently, the guides have a very strict time schedule, which made asking questions feel inconvenient at times. Maybe, they should calculate in an extra half hour for questions. All in all defininitely worth a visit.
As an American, I didnt appreciate the prominent role that Kilmainham Gaol played in the struggle for Irelands independence. The museum is well preserved (after apparent extensive renovations in the late 1960s). The museum staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Cost to enter the museum is very reasonable too. Definitely worth the price of admission. Transportation from downtown Dublin is not super easy although bus stops are nearby.
Excellent tour with an excellent tour guide (David). If you want a 200 year history of the jail and Ireland this is an hour you must do. Great value with access to the museum after the tour. Do not leave Dublin without going on this tour. Booking online in advance is advised as its extremely busy.
Amazing place to visit, so full of history. The Guide was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and really helped explain all that had happened around the site. Would definitely go again if I was in the area, a must-do in Dublin!
A MUST-SEE! But youll need to buy your tickets in advance and they only go on sale 28 days beforehandThere is so much history packed behind these walls that is waiting to be discovered. For one of the cheapest tickets in Dublin (less than 8€), one receives an informative 1-hour tour through the jail, learning all about Irelands history, revolutions, and the role the jail played. It is a great way to sum up Irish history through this specific lens. For those uninterested in history, one may recognize this as the place where The Italian Job, Paddington 2, The Tudors, among many other films were created. As an interactive experience, one has a chance to enter into a few cells and see what the conditions were like. Afterwards, there is free entry into the museum to see important documents and gain more insight into different periods of Irish history. Our tour guide was Alan (I hope I spelled this right), and he is a wealth of knowledge.
We were lucky enough to get Dave as our tour guide. Without his dedication this could have been an average experience but held at least 2 of those 5 stars all by himself. For someone like me who knew just about nothing of Irish history this was well worth the walk.Just remember to prebook your tickets!!
This place was unreal to experience. The prison has so much history and the tour guides were so informative. They did an amazing job restoring the prison as well. The tour took just over an hour and got to see the east, west wing and the museum. We had to buy tickets online.Note: if its full the day you are hoping to go online, check in the morning of. There was TONS of availability the morning of compared to being sold out days prior.Highly recommend this place!!
Booked this last minute, cant recommend it enough, such a interactive and interesting experience. The east wing is a must see while in Dublin. Molly our tour guide was great and we really enjoyed the whole experience. Recommend to book via the website prior to visiting due to popularity.
This was probably the coolest place we have visited so far. Excellent tour guide and saw a lot of the jail. Really cool to hear the history behind the building.
A fab place to visit to learn about Irelands past You need to book a time and the tours start on time. You go round in small groups and have time to take photographs along the way. The tour was very informative and interesting. It takes an hour to go round and then you can visit the museum. There is also a nice coffee shop on site which we sampled some nice coffee and cakes.
Very interesting journey though Irish history, wars and fight for independence. The tour is around 1hr.
Good place to visit. The tour thats included in the price takes around an hour, then you can peruse the museum at your own pace. Book online well in advance. There is a small cafe. If your coming to the Gaol via the Luas tram get off at Heuston Station and walk up through the Modern art museum which has free entry, although you can use the Suir stop which is the same distance.
What a wonderful place to see the Irish history and learn about the British Empire crimes.Me and my daughter loved the tour and we was so lucky to get Adam as our guide.I really recommend you to visit 🙂
I just loved it, the place, the vibe, the tour guide, the staff in general, the history behind it. And damn, the prison inside looks gorgeous as hell!I had a really lovely tour filled with historical facts mostly about the Easter rising (1916and a bit about the Great Hunger episode of Irish history. The main space with all the cells and the big staircases is such a wonderful area. The entry tickets are really cheap compared to other tourist stuff you can do in the city center and its actually much better. Like the St Patricks Cathedral is nice and all but paying almost 10 euros for a church is a bit of a rip off (coming from a country where visiting cathedrals and such is free).Would recommend to visit this place if you have time. Its hella worth! 🤗
Bought tickets online for a guided tour. We met our guide who was clearly very passionate about the jail and made for an interesting and somewhat interactive tour. Very good history lesson and gives a bit of insight into the history of Ireland.
This is an amazing place to visit. I found it a bit emotional. You take a step back in history and learn about the men who sacrificed themselves for their country The sadness if their deaths and the story of how they loved and lost was for me heartbreaking. The story of how brother faced brother in the civil war I found difficult to hear. 😓 Well worth getting the tour it cost us €12 for the both of us. FGF5
Fantastic tour. So amazing to share the same spaces as some of Ireland’s historic change makers. It’s like something out of a movie and it is well preserved and cared for. Our tour guide Dave did an excellent job and it was well worth the entry. Time was given at the end to peruse the museum as well. Be sure to book ahead.
Shout-out to David for an amazing tour and lots of great info, including detailed answers to all follow up questions and impressive knowledge of historical facts.
Dont skip this place when you are in Dublin. It’s a former prison with so much history. The guided tour was really enjoyable, informative and the guide tells the stories about this place so passionately that I almost shed a tear. Cool fact - this place has been used filming popular movies like the Italian job and music videos of bands like U2 :)
It was an amazing tour guided by Karl! Lots of facts and interesting stories. Such a pleasant experience! Thanks a lot! Highly recommend to visit :)
Did the tour last Sunday. Our guide Jonathan was so knowledgable and passionate about the gaol and the history of the country. It really added to a great experience! Would highly recommend this tour!
RESERVE ONLINE! Exeptionaly, if the website does not work ticket COULD be bought on-site.So a(n oldjail, whats cool about that?Well "the thing" itself for starters, besides its crazy history it has had with its captors it held along with the impact the jail and its events had on the unfolding of Ireland (and Dublin:shistory. Along with (non-sensicalsevere jailing that followed in the past for crimes, without taking into account age together with the impact of its many political prisoners have had.
Nice history tour about the jail and irish history. Quite sad but interesting to learn about what went on during the famine and war. Including the leaders of the civil war and which cells were theirs.Tour guide was very kind, simple to understand and broke down the tour well.We also paid 4 euro for students, cheap tickets to enter. Right outside IMMA and is surrounded with food choices to have after.
Our tour guide Ellen really made the life in the prison come alive. The tour takes 1h and there are tours every 15 minutes. The desired tour slot need to be reserved online ahead of time. The easiest way to get there is to take bus 79 (dublin buswhich cost 1.7 euros.
Very good trour given by Andrew. Make sure you book in advance since it is only accessible with a guided tour + self guided Museum visit after. After that you can take a walk in the IMMA park next door.
We loved this tour! Our tour guide was unbelievable! Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. A great story teller! The restoration and preservation of this gaol is amazing and well worth the visit! It was included with our OPW card which was nice but I would have paid the entry fee regardless. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Im not sure this is a must-see for Americans, but it does give you some interesting history of Ireland. I wish the tour was less one-sided, but the tour guides are very passionate. If you do go in peak session you must book at about 30 days ahead.
Excellent tour, and great to learn about the history of Ireland. The tours get to booked ahead of time so try to book ahead if you can. Otherwise check between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and there might be a few tickets that open up on the same day as well. It is 8 euros for adults, and 4 euros for students.
Before I came I hadnt actually known anything about the prison and the story behind it. Anthony was a great guide, as I learnt so much and it was quite interesting too. Great value for entry as well
You really need to do this tour! Excellent and informative guides, makes you realise how far weve all come! Be thankful for what you have today 😊
High recommend visiting here if you appreciate history and/or you just want to explore an amazing old jail. The tour was about 45 minutes and the guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about Kilmainham and its history. After the guided tour you can explore a museum at your own pace with plenty of exhibits and information. I only wish I had more time on the tour to take photos of all the creepy halls and cells.
A huge thank you to the Kilmainham team! I was welcomed by the security person in front if the gate who kindly spoke to me in French, big kuddos to him ! As I was a bit early he recommended me to visit the nice French garden of the hospital near the prison. Great walk before starting the tour. The prison visit itself is an amazing experience. The guide shared his emotions and passion with our group, he really brought us to tears. Every single place was a surprise, the building, the stories, everything was incredibly interesting and full of emotions. The 3 floors museum visit with artifacts was a great wrap up. This is a must to see in Dublin.
For anyone interested in Irish history this is definitely a must, on any trip to Dublin. The guides are really knowledgeable and informative.
If youre in Dublin and you want to know about it history, you have to go to kilmanhaim Gaol. it was a prison where 16 leaders of Easter rising were killed. The Place has that important vibe and at the final of the guided tour you can see a Museum with objects of that time. Highly recommended.
Today we managed to visit the museum. We now know many interesting stories about this place and the people who were held in this prison. Thank you for providing us with tickets and an interesting tour. Ireland with Ukraine)
Highly recommend if you enjoy history. Book ahead as they tend to sell out the tours. Our guide was excellent and passionate about the information he shared. The prison has a fascinating place in Ireland’s history. There were younger children (under 10on the tour and I think it was too long and a lot of information for them. I wouldn’t recommend children unless they have a passion for history.
Great experience and tour! Couldn’t recommended it highly enough. If you want something fun to do for an hour and a half I would definitely go here. The tour guides are a blessing and are very entertaining to listen to, you can tell they are passionate and interested in the topics they are talking about. The gaol itself is beautiful and ancient and if you have studied in criminology or are interested in it, they have the panopticon prison here!! After the tour you are allowed inside the museum (free of chargefor as long as you like and it’s a 3 story building with some very interesting artefacts. Would definitely recommend!!
Really glad I got the chance to visit. The guide was excellent, and gave an interesting insight into the the history of Ireland. The tour of the prison felt just right, and gave you an opportunity to explore all you would want to. I wasnt expecting the museum at the end, which added to the history. Well worth a visit.
A must visit for any history, heritage or architecture fan. Amazing attraction and such a sense of history. If you’re an Irish patriot you will feel the hairs on your neck stand and your heart fill with sadness.
Orla our tour guide was AMAZING! We learned so much and she kept our attention the entire tour. I’m a history nerd so I could have stayed for hours, but my friend who is not even said how great the tour was! I would highly recommend this tour. It was full of Irish history and interesting facts.
This museum must be pre booked in order to enter. The jailor gave a good history of the prison which can be emotional when you hear the stories which happened in the 19th century. It was a worthwhile trip for me. I enjoyed it very much and so will you.
One of the greatest tourist attractions in Dublin city. Our tourist guide was well informed and engaged us throughout the tour. we had great time knowing about Irish history
Note that they release cancellation tickets for the day between 9:15 - 9:30am!Otherwise you need to book in advance as its a very popular tour.Andrew was a funny and informative guide, we enjoyed the tour and stories that he told. The gift shop and café are closed due to Covid it seems, but still a worthwhile trip to learn about important Irish history.
Really interesting to learn about the history of the jail and some of the famous prisoners. The tour guide we had was really good and knowledgeable. Cant belive its free and only a short bus ride from the city centre on 13/40. The tour lasted about 45 minutes and then a look round the Museum afterwards. Definitely a must see!
A must visit for all tourists in Ireland , the guided tour was really interesting , full of information ,and they are happy to Answer all of your questions. Highly recommend .
Very intersting place to visit, giving you insights into an important part of Irish history from a different angle. I strongly suggest to book a tour, as our guide was friendly, very well informed and enthusiastic to explain everything.
They have spent millions on this place, Good tour guide, a couple of places we missed due to covid, but where isn’t effected by the pandemic. Amazing part of Irish history, well worth the visit, booking essential.
