Kilby Historic Site - Museum in Chilliwack, Canada
Awesome place to visit, no matter the age. Great activities year round. The people who work and volunteer there make it a memorable place to go.
We stopped by today and we cannot say enough great things! They were friendly and the overall feeling was very peaceful
The area is small, but the museum staff are really friendly and knowledgeable and the farm animals are cool to see. Also, it is quite relaxing sitting in the yard with a coffee or ice cream.
This is a quaint old place with lots of character. The food was excellent
Great cozy Cafe with homemade soup and sandwiches...always learn something new when visiting the living museum. Visit with the farm animals is always fun. Enjoyed the Bruce James Orchestra this past weekend
Cute little coffee shop with the freshest of food and amazing pies. The staff are very friendly and dress in old time costumes. A step back in time to a peaceful era. Garden seating available but too many mosquitoes to take advantage of it. Tours of the museum available
Great ice-cream!!! Ladies were super friendly since we arrived just after they had closed but still sold us ice-cream =)
Interesting historic site with nice gift shop and cafe.
Staff in the general store are very knowledgeable of the history, and great to talk to.
Interesting part of Fraser Valley history. Not worth the price of admission however
Lots of history here! The store is well stocked with snacks and gift items. There waa a Easter egg hunt for the little kids. They looked like having alot of fun! We made reservations for the Thanksgiving dinner years ago and on this trip we had the Easter dinner. Again the meal waa wonderful. Highly recommended. We will be back one day.The only downside to this trip was the campground. I remember it being more oriented to tenters but now it feels like a RV park with generators running loudly everywhere. Also no camp host.
We had such a great time here. The White Rabbit Egg Hunt was scheduled for the Easter weekend. The egg hunt was followed by a lovely animated reading from Alice in Wonderland. We will definitely come back for the Halloween event.
Seems nice place but it was still closed when we visited in the middle of March.
We had such a great time here. The Halloween event they put on for the kids was great. Old school trick r treating, scary ghost stories and spooky decorations. You can feed the animals on the farm and the birds are running around free range. We will definitely be back at Christmas 🎄
They opened just for our Seniors group and we had a lovely Thanksgiving meal, 24 on the first bus and 22 on the second bus. The meal was delicious. Their setup re the virus was just right. Nice and comfortable for our visit. Didnt visit the farm area as not enough time before our trip back to Chilliwack.
This place was amazing and Im definitely coming back. The staff were super friendly, warm and welcoming. The museum tour was very interesting. Several types of animals all over the farm, which you can be super close to and interact with.
This gem of a place is W O R T H the visit. Ernie at the general store shared so many pieces about the history that I cant really pick a favourite. Maybe the childrens shoe one.....or the train station...youll have to visit to know what Im talking about.I also love that you can feed the goat and sheep - wished there were a few more than just one to feed.... definitely dont want to overfeed them 😳 There are so many little places to discover and wander. Then once youre finished the café has some great food...and the little shop local goodies to buy. Thanks for maintaining an important part of Canadian history.
Step back into the time to the 1920s in a rural farm setting. A great place to take the family. Educational and fun.
This is such an amazing place to visit. Filled with so much history and things to do my kids lived it. Spent the whole day there doing all the things. The staff are great and helpful the only downfall was the Cafe was closed and we came from Maple Ridge with minimal snacks hoping to get a bite and eat in the garden. Overall it was still a great day and we will be back again! A must see historic site!
Ohh what an amazing place ..and their Yorkshire pudding is truly tasty!!!
Ive been visiting Kilby Historic Site for several years. Initially we came here for the Tourism Pass, then started taking my daughter here. I think its a well preserved piece of history located near Harrison Hot Springs. So if youre on a day trip, and you like artifacts and history, I think its definitely worth checking out. Upgrades and additions in recent years have been nice. Although I think a few more animals would be perfect, since thats my daughters favourite part!On my most recent trip (May 21, 2021), I got there 20 minutes before closing, and were rushed the visit the animals and feed the chickens. The staff were kind enough to let us stay and visit with the animals, even after they closed, and my daughter had a wonderful time. However, since we were rushed, I forgot they close the café at 16:00. So, as we went in at 16:05, the lady told us they had closed their till and cashed out. When I told my daughter that theres no more ice cream, and she was greatly disappointed (the body language only a disappointed toddler can make). I think the lady saw how disappointed she was, so she offered us ice cream, but only if we paid in cash and that she wouldnt be able to give us change. I had no problem with that as long as my daughter got her ice cream, because its a BIG part of her experience there! She truly looks forward to visiting the animals and having pie or ice cream with me. The lady gave us a MASSIVE portion of (DELICIOUSice cream, which then delighted my daughter even more. Because of what she did for us, and how friendly and welcoming the rest of the staff were, they really made what could have been a mediocre experience, into a spectacular one. I ended up making a small donation and the lady was grateful.Ive worked in hospitality and the service industry for 20+ yrs, and I sometimes forget to do the little things that matter. Its gestures like this that warms me and remind me to be better. I will definitely be coming back here as long as my daughter wants to, and I will definitely be making regular donations and visits to the café!Well done, and Im very grateful for the experience!Thank you!
Step back in a 1920s village frozen in time in Harisson Mills. Its an enjoyable stop for the kids where they get to pet and feed goats, sheep, pigs and chickens. The general store is a standout, packed with well-preserved trinkets and tin cans. After your walk-through the village, make sure to stop by the cafe and try their tasty sandwich sets.
I was here with some people with special needs. We did a picnic and fed the chickens and rabbits. I was a nice sunny day. The staff was very nice and helpful. Would definitely come back!
I visited Kilby Historic Site and their lovely cafe with family, my youngest loved seeing all the farm animals and the historical site was really interesting to visit. The view from the cafe into the garden was beautiful, it really was a quaint, peaceful sanctuary of a place! After eating in the cafe and walking around the site, we ended with an ice cream from the gift shop which Id really recommend!
Since things are closed for now, we had a different experience. It was great to see how they’ve been able to preserve what’s left of Harrison Mills. We really value their efforts!! It would have been nice if there were more signs or information boards for us to read about the history of the area.
Tremendous! The collection of artifacts is second to none for its time period.... it really is like stepping back in time. We had an extremely knowledgeable attendant that answered all our questions and then some! We look forward to re-visiting when the boardwalk renovation work is complete.
Easygoing, friendly staff. Beautiful grounds and healthy, unscared animals. The museum is fun, and there is a pretty and quaint restaurant on the grounds. Looks to be fully wheelchair accessible.
Adorable place! A must for old timey history lovers. They have an enormous and spectacularly impressive collection of historical artifacts and farm animals to feed and perhaps pet if you dont mind getting your hands dirty. Very reasonable price and really interesting history in a hidden corner of the Fraser valley.
Great place to learn about the local history, with ties to New Westminster, and the farming community back to the 1800s. Self-guided tour starts at the store/cafe and beyond to the general store museum, chalk full of items from the era. Then through the post office and bedrooms. Along the way are audio recordings to listen to, and even a display dedicated to Sasquatch lore. Then wander the grounds to see chickens, turkeys, goats and bunnies, as well as old timey farm equipment. Beautiful little spot to spend a few hours, sample some ice-cream, and imagine what life was like back in the day....
Very clear to see in 1920’s life style in Kent
Great place for a lunch interesting history and a petting zoo type of farm for children to explore. The grounds are beautiful with flower beds etc. A great place to go to get away from city go go for a relaxed afternoon near farmlands with mountain views.
Awesome Place for Kids, Families, and History Bros. The Farm with the Small Animals are Cool to. Worth it Spot to use up a Few Hours of the Day. Also the Lake and the River Beside this Place is Great.
I really liked this place! First you go into the Shop and Cafe which is very cute.On the outside part, you can see all the cute farm animals and pet them. Also a lot of history. Panels telling you a lot about the history of the place and the hotel fulfilled with antique stuff. It is very interesting to see. After walking around we had lunch there. Staff is very friendly and the sandwich was very nice and the soup delicious . Everything very fresh!I would recommend to stop by this place if you are passing by Kilby.
Nice place for a quick stop. Museum a little pricey at $10. Good ice cream.
I love time travel movies, tv shows and audio books. This place is like stepping back in time for me. This the whole site is fascinating and we are lucky it has been saved and preserved. So many things have changed in the last century and to have a living record of life before any of the things we take for granted now existed. Online shopping, a mall? No, there was a General Store. Drive in the country? No, there was the Train and the River (no roads until the 1920s).I had no idea Harrison Mills is a ghost town and the Kilby Historic Site is was remains of the CPR village.
We went for the Christmas at Kilby dinner with our elderly parents. The historic site was closed for the season but while we waited we were allowed to walk through. The farm animals were out and the museum general store was open. It was very interesting if you enjoy social/domestic daily history. The dinmer itself was delicious. A traditional turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing, 4 vegetables and bread rolls. Endless coffee and tea. Huge portions and exactly how one would expect a Turkey Christmas dinner to taste. Choice of pumpkin or apple pie. The pumpkin was delicious. We bought an apple pie to go. All in all with the great friendly service (somehow they even found hot sauce for me and my parentsit was well worth the price. Kilby Heritage Site is a very neat place to visit.
Very nice time traveling back to the good old days!
While walking along the river side and to the museum, imagine yourself going back six, seven decades ago. Enjoy the serenity of the countryside, looked far up to the top of the tree line to see if you can see any bald eagles. Though I did not see one, a trip out there to be part of the nature was amazing.
Neat place. A reminder of early settlers of the Fraser Valley. Kids can feed the farm animals, and there is a grassy play area for them. Had a cafe and a store. We were there for the Eagle Festival.
We had our family Thanksgiving dinner here and I just cant say enough about how lovely it was. The meal tasted like it came right out of your own kitchen. The serving staff made you feel like you were in your own kitchen or at least your Moms kitchen. You couldnt make the meal for what theyre charging. We toured the museum and the General Store which was fascinating and very well done. The guides in the museum were so friendly and a wealth of information and we had a great time. We will be back!
Loved the Museum. The gardens were beautiful. I expected more though, BUT, to be fair those expectations were based on Historic Sites I have been to back East. I was surprised when I discovered theres such a big difference between Military Forts & Settlements and Pioneer/Settler Forts & Camps.
Had a great adventure ... enjoyed the museum and living farm... as well as an Art Display of artist painting scenes on site, each with their own unique Vision. We also had a nice lunch of good quality homemade style comfort food.
This is a great place. Explore the historic buildings, have lunch in quaint cafe, stop in for ice cream, and check out the gift shop. Such a small place and so much to see and do. Like to visit here several times a year. Always something new
Really really cool. This is like little house on the prairie . They have a general store and hotel from the 1920 era. The place is quiet , and staffed with really friendly and helpful people .
Very small, wouldnt spend more than an hour there. A restaurant onsite. Staff was great and knowledgeable. Lovely visit if you dont have much time.
An unexpected gem. A nice place for all ages, pushchair friendly. Excellent cafe selling lovely fresh food at very reasonable prices. And the apple pie and icecream is delicious.
Everyone here is so nice and friendly! It was pretty interesting seeing this slice of history. Being an animal lover, my favourite part was the animals. They had some goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, roosters, and turkeys if I recall. I think a couple more that I dont remember, Im not sure. There is one white goat in particular thats a little over eager - always looking for more food (but in a nice/funny/cute way). I think he had a bell on him for a reason! I would definitely recommend buying the bag of food for the animals. You can eat here, but we didnt get the chance to when we visited because we arrived a little late.
A nice place to come on a Sunday. Sunday is the best day because they serve a roast lunch. The quality was ok, I think the meat was over cooked which ruins it a little for me. The lunch was a big portion that is filling for the rest of the day. After lunch, it is worth visiting the museum. The best part of the museum was the store and hotel upstairs. The post office was interesting too. It was nice seeing all the old products. This place is well preserved and everyone should visit at least once.
Excellent spot for a day out - or for a camping trip! The animals are so friendly and so are the staff - my kids love going to Kilby and enjoying the ice cream too! Close to home and a world away - totally worth checking out!
Fairly small historic site, but nicely maintained, with surprisingly knowledgeable guides. The lady in the general store was helping curate an upcoming feature exhibit on a talented scientist from the area. The store itself is remarkable, with everything from fashion and footwear, electrical and plumbing, pharmacy and lending library, grocery, dairy, deli and bakery and more in one large, very well organized room. Behind, through separate access, you can see the tiny post-office, kitchen and dining/parlor. Upstairs are exhibits on packaging, local history and fashion, as well as some example bedrooms. Below are storage, garage and other basement/workshop space, with a seriously intimidating old boiler.Another guide maintains the outdoors space, giving guided tours, answering questions, and taking care of the many assorted and very friendly animals, including rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks, pigs, sheep, and apparently, some cows. An orchard on one side has cherries and super old apple trees. The old barn, now gift shop and restaurant, houses a 50 seat dining area with simple offerings, takeaway drinks and snacks including fresh baking and ice cream, and washrooms. At $10 for an adult ticket, the price is a bit high, but probably necessary to maintain the place. Check the calendar for their frequent special events.Visiting on a cloudy Thursday in June, it wasnt too busy at all, but Id imagine things would pick up on weekends and sunny summer days when kids are out of school.
