Amazing place.
Beautiful place and weather is usually cold. Sceneries are unlimited. Clean and beautiful Indeed.
The area is under Karakorum range in North most part of Pakistan neighbouring China. This is alpine mountain area with elevation above 4,000 meters. The rich diversity of dlora and fauna increase its importance as it contains very rare and endangered species including Himalayn Ibex, snow leopard, Lynx and others. The temperature is always freezing and very rare it is above freezing point. The Karakorum highway constructed across the park is stunning to watch as it is called eighth wonder of world by some geologists.
Beware that this national Park is a whole different place than khunjerab pass which is commonly mistaken for same spot. This national park is situated in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.it is Pakistans third largest national park, and is adjacent to the Natural Reserve in China called taxkorgan. If you are lucky enough, youll find the best weather here.
You cant stay here for more than 6 hours due to deficiency of oxygen.
Khunjerab National Park, Gilgit-Baltistan, PakistanKhunjerab National Park is a national park in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Khunjerab National Park is Pakistans third largest national park, and is adjacent to the Taxkorgan Natural Reserve in China. Khunjerab National Park was established primarily as a means to protect the Marco Polo sheep (as well as snow leopards and bharalliving in the area. The borders of the park were mapped by Schaller in 1974, after a short field survey. The park was formally established on 29 April 1975 by Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who said that "it must become a world famous park".
Beginning towards a beautiful road trip. The landscape is unrealistically beautiful and magnificent. Magical mountains and pleasant river which follow us throughout the journey with its musical sound on the highest altitude of the snow covered mountains. The landscape changes after every few minutes. In the beginning it started with the Rocky mountains and then the green mountain appears and later on the snow covers them. And its become a mix of different landscapes. You can clearly see the snow melting and converting into fresh water and making its way to the river. Ever second of this journey is priceless. Its end of the August not to cold but still there is snow and the freezing wind that creates another level of excitement. Its just a glance what I see. Visit this mesmerizing place its definitely worth it.
This is the most blessful land and Im really witnessed by Visiting this side of Pak, the park is naturally preserved over a long long range of mountains. He first time I came to know Markhoor and Ibex and different and avg hunt for Markhoors licence is around 10-15 Millions PKR and for Ibex its around 200k-400k. The wild life is quite rich here, population is increasing to positively higher then ever before. Temp is the key measures to life here. Locals are up in the mountains having few valley(swhereas we stoped at this check post of Park national guards, got interactions meet and greet with the officials and found these and many others interesting facts.
Great landscape with extreme weather, a must visit place in life
Petrol pump facility On way to khunjerab pass from Hunza valley.

Khunjerab National Park is Pakistans third largest National Park. The park is adjacent to Taxkorgan Natural Reserve (1,400,000hain China. This park was created on 29 April 1975 by the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on the recommendation of Wildlife biologist Dr. George Schaller. Over half of the park is above 4,000m. Khunjerab Pass, the gateway to China via the Karakoram Highway, is at 4,934m. Much of Khunjarab National Park in Gilgit-Baltistan tops 4,500m (15,000 ftand has one of the largest concentrations of the elusive snow leopard. As in much of Pakistan, the military is complicit in profiting from the trade in endangered species.
This national park is a wonder land. a frozen land through out the calender. a home to very rare species like markhor, snow leopard and yaks... Oxygen concentration is quiet low due to high altitude... And cherry on the top, this national park is home to worlds highest paved border between pakistan and china.
Khunjerab means Death Valley, earlier I wasnt aware of its name from local (wakhilanguage, but after visiting the place it is really a death valley, because its really a remote place and among highest paved highway, snow falls any time of 365 days, this border exists at 16K ft altitude after covering some 1k km on KKH which is amazing felt like driving on glass.. the place is home of Snow leopard, bear and markhor. its a must recommended place.. Especially in summer.
Reaching one of the highest borders in the world is no joke! U need lots of patience and much desire to see it. Khunjrab is cold and chilly, people with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases might have problems due to low oxygen at such high altitude. The place needs lots of traveling though the roads are well maintained and comfy. U’ll go through tunnels and can view the loveliest Passy cones on the way. Snow covered Karakoram peaks and the marvellous Attabad lake too! Which offers a range of boating experience. Safe travels!
Love this place but its low in O2....
Passed through it via KKH. Stopped at the toll collection point. But since it was not scheduled in the tour program, we did not visit the park the way one should. I can say this much that a lot needs to be done to support the precious animal species of this region.
