Storied monastery & popular Christian pilgrimage site with an active church & expansive views.
Wow! Just wow! This monastery is just amazing. The scenery is just amazing with mount Ararat in the background and this church and everything in front… I was amazed by the view and surroundings.
Beautiful spot on the border with Turkey, in the shadow of Mount Ararat, Armenias national treasure.
Nothing amazing. But if you have some time to kill outdoor, its still not bad when its not too hot.
Nice monastery but the view to Ararat is the best.
Visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds. Glad the coin-operated tower viewers have been added since last time, but through them you can see what appear to be Turkish troops keeping Ararat from the people who love it most.
Beautiful place! Best view of Ararat.
As a historical place it’s definitely above 5 star however my 3 stars is to warn people about scammers with 5000 drams pigeons. Keep away from these guys if you don’t wanna get robbed. This gotta do with poor work of administration.
Great place for a photo with the monestery and the mountain is at exactly 500m from where you need to park your car
Stunning location. Well worth the visit.
Such as Novarank, in the same day, you must visit this Monastery, at least for the view on Mt Ararat. Nice monastery , peacefull atmosphere, and de not forget to visit the crypt you can access with ladder. Compulsar visit in Armenia.
Very historical and beautiful church by the border. Armenia is full of history and culture.
the view is just breathtakingly.....the background you can see the great Ararat mountain.
An inspirated Churp - close to the border and next to the mountains Ararat and Masis
Khor Virab (Khor Virap Monasteryis definitely one of the amazing Monastery in Armenia as the view is just breathtakingly wonderful with the Mount Ararat in the backdrop. It very near to the closed border of Turkey, so expect that if youre a tourist your phone will receive a notification welcoming you to Turkeys mobile phone network operator as it happens to all of us when we were there. In the Monastery, you can go down to the underground confinement, however, we didnt try as we are afraid of the very narrow stairway. Its really worth visiting if you are in Armenia. Please be mindful and respect those who are praying when entering the Church.
A very popular tourist site, can see 🗻 Ararat. Just be cautious as some locals will come with pigeons, talking about some legend where u release the pigeons with your hand and make a wish, you could end up paying AMD 5000, for it. Unless you really want to do it.
Definitely worth to visit. Holy place.
Beautiful view of Mount Ararat. The dungeon in which Saint Gregory was imprisoned for 13 years
Beware of the sellers/touts offering you to release the pigeons as a tradion, then asking you to pay big money.
Definitely one of the nicest monasteries in Armenia. It is at the Turkish border and in the background you can see the great Ararat mountain. You can park the car at the beginning and then walk a bit upwards. Parking cost me 500amd, not sure if this is the normal price, at other monasteries it was 200amd. The entrance to the monastery is free.Go a bit early if you want to avoid big crowds and make sure to read a bit about the monastery before visiting it. There’s not a lot of information there.
Want a calming & beautiful site. I would come every day if I could.
Monastery at the base of Mount Ararat. A must see!
Nice View to Mt Ararat where The Noahs Ark is situated...
Incredible historical place and so nearby mount Ararat
Well known monastery with views of the mount Ararat when there is a clear sky (thats not always the case, but it was mine 😊The nearby cemetery feels ancient and has this eery feeling that all cemeteries do not possess. From here you have views of both Turkey and Iran !
Take the bus 467 at 2pm on south station (Sasuntsi Davidfor 250 and to get back you can hitchhike easily if you dont find the same bus to get back. I really like it. Unfortunately was cloudy so I couldnt see Ararat but even tough was worth it, the place is nice and historical. So you can go even if the weather is not that good.
Were very lucky to have a great weather during our visit. Mt. Ararat waa very visible.
If u are interested in history n stuffs definitely u will love this place.Since we are nt that kinda people,we din spend much time .we loved the beautiful view of the mt Ararat. Also from the top of khor virap we can see the Turkey border too.
Just a monastery and beautiful view of Aravat (turkey side)
Khor Virab was a beautiful monestry with view to Mt Ararat. Unfortunately it was very misty that day so we couldnt see that far. It was really interesting to go to the pit where St. Gregory was kept in prison
Khor, what a view! Mount Ararat offers a stunning backdrop to a stunning historical Christian monument.
A tucked away church at the border between Turkey and Armenia. The views from there are just breathtaking and the site is beautiful. Highly recommend.
Fantastic monument in a great location - one of the most important objects in Armenia - decidedly worth seeing.
A small cloud didn’t move from the top of the mountain. I took that says come back and climb the mountain from Turkish side.I like this beautiful Virgin María.
Amazing natural beauty all around. You can go downstairs to the pit where St. Gregory the Illuminator was held imprisoned for 13 years. There are small climbing trails to go up to the top of the mountain, etc. It is so beautiful everywhere there! We can see Mt. Ararat and the smaller Mt. Aragats right next to one another.
beautiful views of mount Ararat, ancient church and monastery. Dungeon where Gregory who Christened Armenia in 301, was held for 12 years.
Beautiful monastery on the top of a hill with stunning view to the Ararat and the mountains of at least thee more countries. It is well worth the driving.
Not far away from Yerevan and definitely worth the trip. Just make sure you have good visibility that you can see Armenia’s Ararat Mountains, which are currently on the territory of the so called Republic of Turkey.
It’s not far from Yerevan. You can get ther in 45 minutes by car and it’s worth it. If the weather is good you can clearly see biblical mount Ararat and also the borders of Turkey. The Monastery is telling story about Saint Gregory, who is the official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Must to visit place just about 1 hour from Yerevan. Has the most beautiful view to Ararat mountain.Tips: There is underground room which is interesting to visit.Buy some fruits along the way, they are organic and yummy, support locals.
We visited this place yesterday and it was a unique experience. Beautiful monastery without the backdrop of biblical Mount Ararat behind, its located bordering Turkey. Expansive views are also available of the landscape at a vantage point above the church which is no more than 50-100 meters of climb.
Just WOW is not enough this place is like something never seen before the beauty the view is absolutely mind blowing the history behind the monstry the view of mount Ararat is mind blowing its a must visit place for all
Impressive views of Mt Ararat from in front of this small monastery. Stop at the vineyards 1 km from it for some nice shots to capture the monastery and mountain. Go in the late afternoon to get the best photos and to avoid the hordes of visitors who descend on coach tours.A taxi from Yerevan is cheap and will wait for you.
Perhaps the most important and symbolic church complex in Armenia. Its only 45 km away from Armenia. Easily reachable. By taxi it costs around 8000-10000 drams. Located only a few hundred meters away from the Armenian-Turkish Border.
Great scenery all around, worth the trip - we did it with a marshrutka (minibusno need for expensive drivers
The Khor Virap is an Armenian monastery located in the Ararat plain in Armenia, near the closed border with Turkey, about 8 kilometres south of Artashat, Ararat Province, within the territory of ancient Artaxata. The monastery was host to a theological seminary and was the residence of Armenian Catholicos.
Historical spot close to Yerevan which also offers a great view of Ararat mountain. Watch out for scammers placing a bird into your hands (!as soon as you exit your vehicle and then demanding money when the bird inevitably flies off.
Historic church where the Armenian king was converted to Christianity. The church and monastery themselves are well worth the trip, and the view of Ararat is amazing
You will get a good view of Mount Ararat, believed where Noahs Ark was resting. Gregory the Illuminator, patron saint and first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church was imprisoned here by for 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. You can get down through a small hole with vertical steps to see the prison 6 meter down.
Under the shadow of the magnificent mount Ararat, this monastery has a very interesting story about the founder of Armenian church. You can step down the stairs where he was supposed tone in jail for 13 years: wet, smelly and suffocating.
I visited here along with Garni temple and Geghard monastery on a daytrip. This was the last of the 3 I visited and the one I knew least about but it turned out to be by far the best part of the 3.You get beautiful views of Mount Ararat in the distance while on inside you can climb down a long ladder down to a small room where the narrative goes the founder of Armenian church was held for over a decade in a pit full of snakes and vipers. The snakes are no longer there.Well worth the journey if you are able to do it.
