Large state park featuring over 125 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding & snowshoeing.
Very calm and lots of cool views. Gives the feel of the mountains without actually being in them.
Great park! They have lots of sites available for camping so even showing up last minute we feel safe to get a good site. Very easy to book Wisconsin state parks right on their website and the parks in this state are beautiful.
The hike is quite pretty in the fall. The tower has great views. The foliage is top notch throughout the hike. If you have a hot wife like me, its a great place to spend a few hours. Now for some beef: The state needs to stop hiring socialist park rangers who dont know how to do the most simple of things like inform visitors where parking is prohibited. Very poor customer service. In fact, the folks hired by the state should be chloroformed to sleep and tazed in the nuts to be awoken. Then they should spend the remainder of their careers hand cleaning the pit toilets.
Always a great time at WI State Parks! Especially gorgeous this time of year too.
Such a beautiful park with nice amenities. Cant wait to go back!
Beautiful views and very calm to spend a relaxing weekend.
Love this place! Lots of spots with privacy. Trails to hike, trails to bike. Lake to swim. Lake to fish. Near small town with ice, a coffee shop with breakfast, lunch and ....coffee!Firewood on site, as well as all around outside campground. Well kept bathrooms with plenty of toilet paper, haaa! And clean showers as well....Long-Lake memories forever!! ❤️
The Northern Unit of KMSF is quickly becoming a go-to for me. Its fairly easy to drive to for a weekend trip, yet still feels somewhat remote.Camping at Mauthe Lake is peaceful and relaxing, and there are numerous trails to explore in the area. However, many of the hiking trails in the area feel like they are primarily designed for cross country skiing. This means they are wide and have relatively smooth terrain, which I dont find to be particularly enjoyable to hike. I mostly stick to the Ice Age Trail, or some of the other trails specifically designated for hiking.
Great day in the beautiful Wisconsin outdoors. Boat ramps to launch into Long Lake. Not very crowded today but can be pretty busy on holidays, summer, and weeke ds. Worth the visit...lots to see in the great Wisconsin outdoors.
Great trails for hiking. Nice facilities and camping sites!
Lots of stairs. Of course stairs up the tower, but there are a lot of stairs leading to the tower. Not good for hip, knee or back issues. Id prefer a hill VS the stairs personally. Good view of trees. Probably best in fall. We stopped in spring so mostly just bare trees.
Like all of Wisconsins state parks. Great place to camp. Only short coming is lack of hiking trails. Just one short trail. Also no ice available to buy. Must drive to nearby gas station.
We are camping there now. Camp sites are getting bad. They cut down all the Ash trees, which is fine. But DNR did no clean up. Paths to bathrooms are blocked. Picnic tables are bad, rotting. Its convenient for us to camp there, and will probably go back next year. Not happy about it though.
Lots of cool little nooks and crannies hidden out in the forest. Walking trails oh, lots of Wildlife, cool little Kettle Lakes hidden out in the middle of nowhere. Find a trail take a day and go get lost to find yourself
Regardless of the rain, the facilities (including the pit toiletswere prestine! Probably one of the best state park camping experiences Ive had in years!
The park was beautiful, clean bathrooms and well cared for campsites. My wish is that people be respectful of others. We had neighbors whose dogs barked every time one walked by, the dogs even visited our campsite a few times, and then the owners were constantly yelling at the dogs. And they had crying babies and many visitors. Not the get away weekend we hoped for, but the rest of the park was a great getaway from our neighbors.
Very pretty, enjoyed a hike along the Ice Age trail. Great getaway from Chicago, around 2h drive.
Pretty awesome. I learned a lot about geology.
Had so much fun out here! We just pulled off on the side of the road and found a cute section for the dogs to run free ❤️🙏
Great trails, camping, and views. I would definitely recommend bringing a decent water filter or jugs of water if you plan to camp at Mauthe Lake though. The water available on site is pretty hard to drink.
Wide variety of parks, trails (hike and bike), and waterways to kayak. Favorite hiking is Zilmer (wide, not overgrown in summer). Kayak around Mauthe Lake and the MKE river. Parnell tower for the views. Ice Age Trail Center is also a must see.
10/23/21 Visited Long Lake Recreation Area Wisconsin Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit. Enjoy hiking: Golden Trees, Green Grass, White Cloud, Blue Sky, Clear Water, Colorful Coast, Smell of the leaves, Cool autumn weather...See more on Youtube, search: Long Lake Sweet Calming
The trails are well marked and when I went not muddy. But I bet the trails are muddy after a rain so pick your day. A wonderful way to spend an afternoon
It is simply amazing at this time of year. I already have over 10 lb of black raspberries from the forest and about a pound of red raspberries but theyre still ripening up right now. The blackberries are going to be ripening up in about 3 weeks maybe. Just walk the trails they are everywhere. And of course look just off the trails because youll spot the berries when youre not looking. And if youre lucky walking along some trails you may even find cherry plum trees. They are delicious.
Beautiful lake. Well maintained campground and toilets are clean. Not very crowded.
Loved the hiking trails through the forest. The Parnell Tower is the best place to get a 360 degree view of whole Sheboygan.
My dog and I truly enjoyed using backpacking site #3 for an overnight camping trip. Very nice campsite and the park trails are great.
Awesome hiking trails- well groomed and easy to follow- gorgeous views!
Stayed at shelter number 1. It was perfect for someone with pets or children. I was about a half mile from my car in case anything were to happen. The trails are beautiful and well maintained! Such a good time!
Best state park and nature preserve forest area nearby Milwaukee. Scenic drive is ideal for a quick visit/drive in a sunny day.
We spent a day hiking between Greenbush Picnic area and the Parnell Tower on the Ice Age Trail and spent the night at backpacking shelter B5.The trail is very well marked. Some rocky areas and moderate inclines.Shelter B5 has a dirt floor, high hooks for one hammock, fire pit, and a one-holer pit outhouse. Benches along the inside wide enough to sleep on, enough space in the floor to set up two small tents. Parking is maybe .2 of a mile away and there’s a hand water pump near the parking. There’s a scenic highway that’s worth checking out, if you have time. And a ton of trails in the area. Definitely worth checking out.We noticed shelter B4 had a cement floor and one set of hooks for a hammock.
Love the area especially with the changing fall colors!!! Will camp at Mauthe Lake camp ground this next Summer fir sure!!!
Such a beautiful place to ride 😍. The bathrooms in the horse camp are clean, there are both indoor and outdoor stalls for the horses, and electric hookups. The trails are very well maintained!
We learned about this place from another camper last year and decided to check it out this year (2020). It is a quiet beautiful campsite with a close-by beach. Very clean and well-maintained with fairly good spaced-out campsites. The surrounding landscape was very charming and relaxing. You may blame Wisconsin for such typical beauties:). It is now added to our list of campsites for future visits.Note: We happened to be there in August and were met with countless annoying mosquitoes! Just be prepared in advance :)
The trails are not well marked or well maintained. The scenery is beautiful. The lake is clean. The beach is nice. All in all it is not a bad place to visit.
I backpacked with my 5 kids to the hiking shelter B6 in the Zellmer loop of the northern Kettle Moraine. We went at the start of July. Pluses: were that it is a short hike in from the trailhead-less than a mile- so for a first try backpacking for the kids it wasnt an overwhelming thought. We saw deer, frogs, Lunar moth other cool bugs, and blackberries were ripening along trail. The campsite had a spring next to it- it is recommended to still treat it though. The campsite had firepit, pit toilet, and a shelter. Here are the down sides that we laughed off as story plot items- mosquitoes and deer flies oh my. Be ready to deal with those. Also, the hiking shelter...bring a tent for sure. I brought a 2.5 man tent thinking most of us will just use the bench in shelter...at night time out came the mice- cute as they were, it meant that 5 people slept in the little tent and I slept in hammock swatting mosquitoes all night. The shelter also smelled like, well wet mouse droppings. So, overall I am glad we went but I dont think it was good enough to do a second time in the future and obviously I would be better prepared and hopefully you can be if you have read my review.
Always a beautiful park. Great trails for hiking with my dog.
Lapham Peak is connected to the Northern Unit trail of the park although it is a further walk from the actual State Park entrance which also has roads leading directly to the observation tower. This is a great park to visit for an easy hike or quick jog in the woods.
We checked into the Visitor Center, the Ranger was very helpful, polite and knowledgeable. My daughter bought me a State Park Pass, for Mothers Day, a gift that keeps on giving💞🌳🌲Was cold out, but we dressed for it. Had a great hike! Lots of activities offered throughout the year.
One of Wisconsin gems, great place to take the kids after school. Love family time spent together in the beautiful woods.
End of the trail at county road FF in Sheboygan County Wisconsin. Or, the beginning. North bound trail picks up again 35 miles away in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Thanks for the LTD!! Dont know if I should have helped myself to it, but, hang a gift from a tree limb, anyone might take it. Happy Holidays!!!!
The trail network here is awesome. A nice section of the Ice Age Trail runs through the park. Theres shelters to camp in along the way. They are pretty covered but not mosquito proof. Id have mosquito netting to cover your sleeping area or the door and windows. The shelter door we saw was 9 x 7. The windows were 4 x 5 I think. There are benches lining the shelters to sleep off the ground should you want too. The Parnell Tower and visitor center are great stops.
We camped at the Horse Riders Campground right outside New Prospect while riding the Colorama Endurace Ride. It was a great weekend. The campground is very well kept, the individual and group sites are very nice. On the individual sites each one has two corals and high ties. The group camp has multiple high ties and about 30 corals. The Colorama Ride was great as well! The ride manager had it very well organized and made this event the very best endurance ride we have been to yet! All in all an exceptionally fun weekend and we will be back!
Loved the section I visited and the ice age visitors center was one of the best I have seen that is not a national park. All the staff I encountered were very friendly and good for a chat about various state parks. My biggest issue is the map they have is a bit confusing and difficult to understand. Had trouble telling where each section was and what was road vs trail.
Beautiful and well maintained trails. There is a little bit of something for everyone here: hiking, boating, fishing, camping. The trails were a majestic experience, definitely recommend.
This is a really cool state forest. The trails are well maintained and the facilities are top notch. I took the purple loop which is 6 miles. There is a variety of envionments from pine forest to marsh that you walk through and near. I highly recommend this beautiful park.
Great outdoor opportunities for myriad activities, many state park campgrounds to choose from. Unique terrain to explore along the Ice Age Trail.
Its beautiful, must visit place if you want to take experience of real forest hiking n camping.
Loves the trails, ventured off a little bit and climbed a few trees, found lots of mushrooms, but no morels. It was overall a wonderful day!
Slightly disappointed with the park. Plenty of acres to roam but many areas of the park are being logged off. I just dont understand how a State Park can do slash cutting leaving the areas in such disarray. Very disappointed while on the Ice Age Trail. This was not a walk to remember!
