Iceland, Hofn
This scenic lake occupies a volcanic crater ~3,000 years old & is reachable by foot.
Definitely a cool stop. I didnt see anything quite like it on the rest of the trip. Good little trail that takes you around the rim of the crater as well.
Paid £2.50 entry. Worth visiting both the rim walk and also at the bottom. Rim walk takes about 15 minutes. We didn’t not walk at the bottom but great place to take a photo
Beautiful and easy access crater! There is a fee (400ISk per person). You can hike to the like in bottom of the crater and also around the top of it.
Recently stopped here for a quick visit. They charge 400isk per person to visit, but really, its well worth it. Views are nice knowing what happened here 6500 years ago.Free parking on location as well.
Easily accessible from the road. For a small entrance fee an easy climb affords you amazing views of the crater and surrounding area. Walk around the rim towards the entrance and if you’re lucky enough to be able to sit on the two seater bench at the water’s edge, take a few moments absorb the beauty of the location.
Cool place to visit, near the golden circle. You can walk around the crater which takes around 15-20 minutes and make some nice photos! The parking lot is right at the entrance of the crater. As this is close to the GC there are a lot of tourists, so come early!
We went mid September which made it easier to park. Parking is free but there is an admission fee, that wasnt that much. You can walk around the ridge and go down to the lake.
One of 3 volcanic crators that was very interesting to walk around. Makes you feel very small when thinking about the power that would have released in the past.It is quite a drive from the city to just do this, so make sure you add on other bits at the same time.
There is a 400 ISK entry fee per person. The color of the water is so green and the walk around the circumference gives you the best possible view down toward the Crater as well as the panorama around you at eye level. Drones are banned and that somehow made me a little disappointed to deduct one star. But thats just me. It still is a wonderful place otherwise.
You can get there by drive to the Golden circle route this is in a private property land and by the entrance there was a 400 ISK fee. There is a path to go down the crater and what I find unique to this crater was the reddish color with the green vegetation all around with emerald color water inside the crater is just a wonder of the nature. A recommendation on the Golden Circle route is to definitely come here also to Gullfoss, or the "Golden Waterfall", the Haukadalur Geothermal Valley, with its many springs and geysers; and Þingvellir National Park. There are several tours but if you can rent a car with a WiFi hotspot you can just use Google map.
There isn’t a part of Iceland that isn’t amazing but this is just like every other place, you have to see it with your eyes it’s so amazing to see pictures don’t do it justice!I think it was a few ££s to end yer so doesn’t break the bank, you could happily spend an hour there walking around the top and then down and around inside near the water.
Kerid crater is an absolutely beautiful geological wonder. There is no photo I could take that could truly capture its colours and beauty. The walk around the crater up top took about 20-30 minutes, and then there is the stairs down to the crater itself. I recommend wearing good shoes, to help with the walk.Kerid was the only place in the golden circle with an entry fee per person, and yet the only place we went without access to a toilet. This was less than idea, after we spent 1.5 hours walking up down and around the crater. There wasnt any gas stations nearby, which made for an uncomfortable search. Youd think if they are charging per person to visit this site, they could consider that their visitors may need a WC while there.
Very cute spot to visit that looks quite different from other popular spots. Parking is free but entrance fee is 400isk per person.Paths around the crater and down around the lake, took us about 30-40 minutes to finish.
You can walk to the bottom to the lake or walk around the rim of the crater on top, there are 2 paths. If its a windy rainy day, it can get quite slippery. There are signs that tell people. You can take photos at locations created for taking photos, pretty easy to walk the loop, just 20 mins
The Keri’s crater is a collapsed volcano. It is quite beautiful and worth the hike down. It has numerous attractive plants flowers and vegetation to see at all levels.Pro-tip west hiking boots the path can be slippery. Try to take photos from all angles.
Absolutely amazing crater. The water is a pretty green color, and you can walk down and walk around or stay above and walk around. I recommend making the trip to go down. You can see the beautiful water color. Its 500 isks per person to see it.
This was a lovely little stop just off the road. We were there on a beautiful, sunny day and it wasn’t nearly as crowded as the waterfalls in the area. My husband and I walked around the rim at the top and around the lake at the bottom. If you have to choose, I would do the rim walk as it gives better views and the colors can look different depending on where the lighting is. You do have to pay to see it, although it is not a lot.
It was a stunning natural attraction. Great weather makes the color comes out more vividly. Two options to choose either walk around the crater lake to observe the panoramic view or go down to the lake side and enjoy it closely. Maybe more protection to this nature site by prohibiting people swim in the lake.
Iceland is a beautiful country with fantastic places to visit. This is my third time visiting Iceland. I would not rate this in our top choice of destination in golden circle. (Recently a ticket booth (400 isk per personwas installed to visit the crater)
Its pretty cool to see a caldera. Its 400kr to park. Busy place. There is a amphitheater seating area. You can walk around the whole thing, and walk down to the water. I wouldnt go out of my way to see this again though.
Nice location but one tip: go during the evening. During the day, its overly crowded with the many bus tours that stop here. So forget nice pics and calm views then. But we went at 20h45, and there were just a handful of other people there then.
Exactly what you would expect really, a big beautiful crater in the middle of nowhere. The water is an amazing colour and I’m told it changes colour depending on when you visit so it never looks the same, there is a nice viewpoint over the top of the crater, plenty of parking. You are able to walk around the ridge of the crater, however the paths are very narrow and quite scary at times which makes it even more interesting! You can also walk around the inside around the water, there are steps leading down.Unfortunately no facilities and once you have looked at the crater you move on as there is nothing else around, but worth the visit.
There’s a big view point at the top to access whole crater, you can also go down inside to see crater, very scenic with a beautiful lake at the bottom, would recommend visiting!!!(They do charge for it , kids under 12 free)
Parking here can be very tough, this site attracts a lot of visitors (and rightfully sobut the lot is too small so it takes time during peak hours. Get ready to wait, sometimes on the road. Its worth it though, the view is tough to beat
Interesting volcanic crater, 6500yeqrs old only, you can walk around top of caldera and then go down and around lake at bottom. 400ISK entrance fee c.$3, free parking
Need to pay for entry, parking is free. Awesome landscape . The walk around is crater is fun. Can be windy so carry clothing accordingly.
One of the most beautiful things that I ever seen not only in Iceland, but all in my life! It’s part of Golden Circle and it’s so near the main road. There is a ticket to enter, but not so expensive. Amazing!
Gorgeous! The water’s so blue especially when the sun is out. The property is well maintained and the view from the top is amazing. Worth a visit!
Amazing short hike. Go late at night there will be no one there. During the day is packed with people. If you have a good voice this is a cool place to sing. You have to pay to enter. Worth paying if you see it as a donation.
Beautiful unique site to see. About 400 króna per person to get in which is about £3 but they keep it clean and paths are maintained so small orice to protect a beautiful site. You can walk round the top and the bottom of it. Would definitely recommend seeing.
Beautiful crater with a short hike around it. There seems yo be more trails to walk if youd like. No bathrooms or other facilities. I am giving it 4 stars because I am comparing it to Crater Lake in Oregon which is a 5 star hike with absolutely gorgeous views.
Cool spot where a volcano sunk into the earth! Very calm and serene atmosphere. Water was a nice warmth in mid June. Great views from up top. We walked down the stairs; 139 in total with inclines in between as well. Great pictures halfway down the stairs where you get a balcony type view. At the bottom there were cool/unique views. It was worth the trip.
Area very well maintained. Water is gorgeous when the sun is out. Hike around crater is pretty easy. Plenty of places such as rocks and other sitting areas to take amazing pictures overlooking the crater.
It was beautiful, a lot of colour and was majestic. You can hike around a few craters but only the one had water at the bottom. $4 to enter, free parking. Privately owned
Lovely place, geologically, quite an interesting site. Quick hike around the crater gives a few nice angles to the small water reserve at the bottom of the crater. The stair down to the lake is very well maintained and theres a bench right next to the lake. Photos naturally come out magical. The 400 isk fee is not much but the receptionist guy was reluctant to provide any info without scoffing/sounding sarcastic.NO DRONES are allowed, hope that saves someone 400 isk if your primary motive is to take some cool drone shots.
An absolutely stunning experience. You can walk alongside the Crater or all the way down to the bottom. It has a mostly paved route, so its helpful for those with limited hiking experience. There is a small entrance fee.
Impressive, a must see in Iceland. If it’s on a sunny day like when I was there even better as the color of the water is amazing. Parking in the area and a nice walk round the crater is possible and recommended
Great views, small payment to enter, about 400 ISK per person as i recall. There are no toilets. Round trip took us about 30 minutes with break for tea and chill :)
Its a cool place to visit. And the little walk down and around is nice. I didnt mind paying for entrance, because I see what they do with maintenance of the trail and so on.
We spent a very pleasant couple of hours walking the rim and then the base dipping our toes in the lake to cool off on a beautiful (rareIcelandic day. There are stunning views whichever way you look. I’ve visited summer and previously in the winter and loved it on both occasions. There is a small charge for adults to enter but it’s very good value and cheaper than a coffee.
Entry fee is about 2.80€ per person. Crater is really beautiful with crater lake at the bottom. It is possible to go around it at the top and walk down the stairs to the lake.
A super relaxing, magical place and where you hear the birds singing. The color and tranquility of the water in the crater is incredible. ✨️
Beautiful, not if you’re afraid of heights. Wear hiking shoes, there’s no specific path and you are one with nature. It’s a hike back up from the bottom so you should probably do that first before going around the Crater.
Why is this called an eye of the earth you will understand seeing it through your own eyes. Definitly worth a visit, even the fee of 400. Plan some 40-60 minutes.
Great place and a must to visit. I would not suggest going when snow covered as youd miss the.amazing colours of the surrounding rock. All thats missing is a toilet for comfort relief.
Nice place to stop.400 isk per person. You can count ~30mn if you want to walk around, make it 40 if you take your time and walk down to the lake.If its sunny, might be nice to bring a sandwich over, there are a few places where you can sit with a nice view.
Cool place but winter isnt the time to visit as the colors are masked by snow. It was a nice stop to break up our day so I would certainly recommend it if you are in the area.
Amazing Views and Photo Opportunities! Can get VERY VERY windy so bear that in mind! Well worth the effort to visit.
I am sure that the pictures not make justice to the beautiful scenery. The Crater was frozen when we visited it, and give to us another wonderful scenery to see in Iceland, theres a parking lot available, you can walk to the bottom (there are stairsand up is safe to walk to, just be careful with the path as there are loose stones that can make us slip.
We got denied on our 1st attempt due to road construction but was able to return a couple days later. Was sunny round 1 and then a storm blew through and frozen the lake and powdered the parameter. Still glad we got to experience it.
