Keahua Arboretum - Arboretum in Lihue, United States
Trees that lose a bumpy bark to one of a mixture of red and green.
Nice park to stop and wander through. Amazing eucalyptus trees to see with all their colors.
Gorgeous, but make sure to wear bug spray! We got about 4 bug bites each when visiting for 20 minutes.
Nice, calm, and colorful spot. Good place to stop off, see the beautiful garden and relax a bit.
The rainbow eucalyptus trees are amazing, the stream is cool and refreshing. The toilets, not so much. Basic facilities and a smallish parking lot. While i was there it was clear this is a popular spot for people to go off-roading on the nearby trails. The parking lot was pretty full or jeeps and 4x4s headed up or coming back from mudding. There are maybe 3 or 4 picnic benches. Lots of trailheads for hiking, but not much to do besides go on a trail, have a picnic, sit in the water, or take a look at the trees. Road coming into the arboretum can be overgrown on the sides and narrow so go slow. My kids were a bit disappointed because this isnt a park with a playground but they did have fun playing in the river.
This is a must see stop on your Kauai island tour. You dont need to spend all day here, but certainly worth stopping long enough to see the rainbow eucalyptus trees. The smooth bark and the multicolored surface to the trees seems unearthly. Ive been stopping at this place for years on my multi island visits. Parking may be limited. If so you can park down the road and walk, or do like I did and wait for someone to leave. Whatever you do, GO!
This was not really an arboretum, but rather an extremely small local park. It has a couple spots for swimming in the river and that is about it.
Very fun, clean, and the kids loved to rope swing
Beautiful groves of trees with a stream and trail heads nearby for hikes. Very quiet and low key when we were there. There was someone selling fresh coconuts and a few locals hanging out at the river.
I expected to see a variety of plants with informational signs. The only sign just identifys the place. The place is pretty with a nice stream. We saw a tree with a streaked colorful truck. Another visitor identified it for us as a Rainbow Eucalyptus. The road is crooked and narrow. I wont go again
Very nice place for a good hike (Kulau Trailto see the luscious green mountain view. Be prepared, quite muddy on the trail hike but wasnt that bad. While it was overcast, it mad the hike pleasant.
Nice swimming hole down river of this place. As for the arboretum itself there was not a whole lot here to observe.
This is a must see when visiting the island‼️ It is unbelievable to see so many of the Painted Eucalyptus trees all in the same area, as well as good hiking trails.
Sweet little arborteum full of rainbow trees. Nice picnic areas by the river.
Beautiful area. Didnt hike any trails sadly, but was glad we visited. Rainbow eucalyptus trees were what brought us there and they didnt disappoint.
Stopped here to hike the Kahalia trail that had amazing views!! The arboretum was pretty cool, although it doesn’t provide thr same education as a typical arboretum with labeled trees, but still beautiful!
Not much to see there. Not many trails and they don’t go very far. There are some hiking trails nearby. The rainbow eucalyptus trees were amazing. More of a nice spot for a picnic and going in the stream.
Great spot for locals and 2 hikes nearby. A shallow river runs between the arboretum, with a deeper water hole for diving. A one lane bridge separates the spot, with plenty of parking.
Everything was overgrown but I think that it just added more flavor to the spot. It felt hidden like you were finding a place that was rarely found. It was beautiful and tranquil.
The highlight was the amazing rainbow eucalyptus trees, the bark was like nothing I had ever seen before.
Great spot, but be ready for muddy trails if it has been raining. The Eucalyptus deglupta are beautiful. Other eucs there are over 200 ft tall. Impressive.
The Rainbow Eucalyptus trees are unlike anything I have seen! Majestic! However, there werent enough signs going to this place, and once we arrived, we wanted to know more about the trees. A little stand with more information or a detailed placard would be nice.
This area was nice and the rainbow eucalyptus were cool. Theres also a pretty stream. Im not sure if we hit it on a bad day, but it was extremely muddy and wet, and the walkways were horrible. The road was also a little flooded and we had to tip toe around the giant puddle even on the sidewalk. The bathroom was also in need of a good cleaning and was loaded with flies, I only used it because I really had to. If you like nature, this place is pretty, but the grounds maintenance could be improved.
This is a natural site. We didnt hike too far as the mud kept us close to our car.Still to see some of foliage up close was amazing.
10/10, theres a hiking trail and a 4WD car trail too
Gorgeous place to wander and picnic. Incredible birdsong. There are several sheltered tables and a latrine.
Amazing location, nice stream flowing and great place for hiking.
Really beautiful scenic area, the Rainbow eucalyptus were so cool to see.
Road is clear and ready to travel up to the first bridge crossing. Here there are several spots to swim in the cool mountain water. Some spots are good for"cliff jumping" off the 4 for bank info 8 foot pills, and others have rope swings. A few picnic tables are scattered around. There is an out house style restroom too.
Super cool place. Beautiful scenery, and a launching point for a few solid hikes as well as. Parking is easy, theres tons of spaces.
After parking over the river, walked up through the grove of beautifully colored Rainbow Eucalyptus trees - which appear to be the highlight of the forest arboretum. Wandered a little further but for the very novice tree spotter didn’t appear to be much more to see. There is also a very pretty set of Rainbow trees in a somewhat more accessible spot driving into the Kukiolono park and golf course in Kalaheo.
Kauai is the best of the Hawaiian Islands. The Arboretum lets one get a feel for the tropical nature existing there.
Painted Eucalyptus trees are nice to look at. I went after a recent rain so it was a bit muddy. Not the parks fault, just weather doing its thing.
Rainbow eucalyptus trees are beautiful, and are the first thing on display. Very easy to access them.
We used to love coming here because of the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees and the serenity and almost reverence of the area. Now, the trees are still beautiful but the restrooms were boarded up, the trees had been damaged by people carving them, the picnic table was destroyed by vandals and big ruts had been cut into the road around the park by four wheel drive vehicles which destroyed the natural beauty.
Cool mountain air, tree-lined roads and large grassy fields offer a refreshing change from the sunny and warm beach air. The Keahua Arboretum is planted with native and introduced plants by the University of Hawaii and is used as an outdoor classroom for students and visitors. Cool off in the cold mountain spring water and enjoy lunch at one of the numerous picnic sites scattered throughout the park.
This is a wild place. There is no upkeep. All natural.
Rainbow eucalyptus- we randomly ran across pictures on pinterest and had to find these while visiting Kauai. The area is quiet and beautiful and these trees are amazing. Take the time and take a look.
Nice drive to get to Keahua Arboretun, but although there is a nice group of rainbow eucaliptis trees, there is no identifying signage on any of the trees and area is quite run down...outhouse is disgusting. There are a few picnic benches, but not maintained.
quiet beauty of the forest, peaceful place to picnic, cool sparkling stream to relax by....
Beautiful park, with Rainbow Eucalyptus trees. I had never even heard of these before. There is a river nearby. Not much to do other than a little walking and maybe play in the river. A few places to have a lunch. It is a bit of a drive, even for Kauai...
We went before 10am on a Sunday. The road itself winds through residential but is all a paved 2 lane. There is a trail head about a quarter mile before the actual arbortoreum parking lot that has maybe 4 spaces in it. Sounds like this is a 1.8 mile trail. We got about 50 yards in and realized that it was completely overgrown with grass to my shoulders and muddy with water running through. Some people on their way out said they got about 200 yards in before they had to turn around bc of the conditions. Past the trailhead, is a left parking lot, a one lane bridge, and a right parking lot on the other side. When we pulled there were multiple cars in the lot. People were bathing in the river and it looked like they lived here. Basically, if you have come to see the rainbow eucalyptus, park in the parking lot on the other side of the bridge, and walk across the street. There is a section of mowed grass that winds down to the river and a covered shelter and one that winds up to overlook a meadow with a covered shelter. There is a restroom facility here, but poorly maintained. The whole grounds are actually poorly maintained with what looks like people that live here, or people that use the grounds as their personal playground. The trees are something to see, but almost all have been carved up with initials or insignia. Super disappointing to see. Also looks as though trucks run through here to go mudding and carve ruts in otherwise grassy areas. Besides aforementioned buildings, there is no arbortoreum building or signage to really tell you what and where. The road turns into gravel so believe me, you wont miss it.
The arboretum was beautiful but kind of misleading. When we got there it was not very well marked. The hiking trail appeared to be well keep. Its called an arboretum, but it was mostly only rainbow eucalyptus trees. It is also next to a river that was really nice and there was access to the water if you wanted to swim.
Beautiful area, lots of picnic tables and a river to swim in. We just went for the colorful eucalyptus trees.
Very cool tress!! The trunk colors are so neat, looks like theyre painted. Nice green grass to hang out on and picnic tables, trash cans. The river/stream is nice and some kids were jumping off the edge into the water. The bathroom at the top is horrible though, didnt even open the door all the way-it smelled so aweful.
This review is a little late coming considering Im back in the great white north. Back to project at hand this site is a nice drive to an area that Im pretty sure not many tourist visit but if want to see some painted eucalyptus trees this where you find them.
Not much to this place really other than a grove of rainbow eucalyptus trees. Definitely a great picnic stop and it looked like there was a swimming hole just down stream. Theres a new bridge so you no longer have to fjord the stream.
Awesome views and rare plants nice place to get your feet wet.
Very cool almost secret feeling place, Definitey worth a stop. Bugs were not bad bit some bug spray wouldnt hurt.
Drove to this place and saw many people playing on the crossing where the pavement ends and dirt road began. Continued on for a few miles and it was amazingly nice as well as muddy. Powerline trail head is near here. Stopped on the way back to look around and it was a nice place to stop and have lunch and enjoy the river and trees.
