Defensive medieval castle with art & historical exhibitions, cultural events & guided tours.
Very beautiful castle - definitely something to see if you are visiting Kaunas.
Very beautiful and quiet place!
Not much to see inside. A much nicer sight from the outside.
Nice to have see it if you pass the way..
Must visit place if you are in Kaunas. Whole Santaka park is beautiful.
Great in Summer ☺️
Leaves wanting for more. Impressive, but Im a lil hater comparing to trakai 😁
Had a lot of fun here! Was also beautiful and interesting.
It very nice, old teutonic castle. It is a pitty that is so small (compare e.g. to Malbork in Polandbut still it is worth to see it.
The castle at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers was built in the 14th century to defend against the onslaught of crusaders. This is not only one of the first stone castles in Lithuania, but also the only one that has two rows of defensive walls. A settlement that grew into the current city was created around the Gothic defences. Kaunas castle first mentioned in written sources in 1361. According to legend, Queen Bona Sforza’s troops mysteriously disappeared in the tunnels underneath. Although it was restored multiple times, the castle lost its importance in 1408 when Kaunas was granted Magdeburg rights and the life of the whole city moved to the Market (Town HallSquare. The castle was home to a prison in the 16th century and the souls of the prison’s inmates have not found peace to this very day, haunting the castle still by night. At present, the castle is a Kaunas city museum branch and annual cultural events are held in and around it.
Enjoyed too see ! Open space for childrens to play ;)
Remains of a medieval castle, not much left but fixed up nicely. When we were there, there was two men dressed up as knights demonstrating how knights fought, very cool!
To see if you’re in the town.
Nice place to walk!!!
Not the biggest or the grandest but worth a visit and it’s a nice historic bit of window dressing for the town.
small but cool castle tower with a history behind it.start from the basement!!
Wonderful place especially on sunset times....
The remainings of the castle is part of a nice area in front of the river where is possible to seat and enjoy the landscape.
The castle, the prison in the basement, the 2nd floor, the statue, the river, the view in general, they were all just beautiful!
I am interested about Kaunas Castle
Kaunas castle is not only beautiful on outside, but museum in side. Recommended to see place.
A small but pretty castle in nice open and green surroundings, at least to one side.
Beautiful castle with small museum.
Beautifil castle, perfect location to visit, near old town, river, park💯🙂👌
Calling it "castle" it s a little too much. It mostly consists of ruins of a small tower and some walls around. I wouldnt say it is anything special but the park around and the walking paths are really chill and well mantained.
Its like a fairy tale insideHistoric things all around, the view from the tower is mesmerizing! Go, you wont regret it!
Loved this place- interesting, small but well done with basement and 3 upper floors that affords you fabulous views of the city for €3 entry
Kaunas Castle from 14 century. Not open Mondays
Nice castle which has been restored well. Its well worth a look around. It has been made into quite an attraction with various activities for all ages. If you get the chance there are some newly excavated parts of the old castle grounds which are worth taking a look at. They are now surrounded by more modern buildings.
Nice little castle. Can go upstairs for free and take photos from the view point. Very central and close by to everything.
An interesting historical place. Very steep spiral staircases.
Its a beautiful place to come and walk a very large territory and there is a park nearby there is a river, you can sit near the water and just dream
Really worth a visit. It is full of very interesting artefacts that are well displayed in their relevant settings. Superbly displayed and cared for, with detailed explanations of their functionality. Whole rooms are re created, you are transported back in time. Fun for adults and kids,it gave a good insight into Lithuanias glorious past.
Beautiful place to visit if you are in Kaunas. You can also walk in the park near the castle which is also good. Nice view with river. Sculpture Freedom warrior is also nearby. Lucky if you can go there in a less crowded day.
Partly in ruins but still imposant. This area has a nice view to all directions of Kaunas
Nice renovation of the ruins to what it would have looked like in its 13th to 16th century peak. A bit small on information but not expensive so good for a visit along with Kaunus museum
An amazing spot for tourist looking to get some further insight into Lithuanian culture, this city is even more interesting in winter giving it a certain medieval feeling and spooky feel in the cold. Really cool when lit up at night!
Its a nice area with a great vantage point from the tower, however, I cant rate it five stars because its not at all obvious which part is historical and which is reconstruction.
Awesome how peoples of Latvia was able rebuild they wonders after communist devaststion. Great work.
Nice castle with a small but interesting exhibits, starting down below from the entrance and culminating in the top of the renovating tower. Enough things to keep children entertained, no disabled access.
Was smaller than expected. Didn’t go up the castle for that reason (thought the view wouldn’t be as splendid+ didn’t want to pay for the entrance fee. But the castle from the outside was good enough for the visit.
Nice place to see, if you up for a nice walk and see beautiful things this is a place to come. Everything nicely done up.
Original Kaunas castle was built in mid 14-th century, and became one of the main objects of attacks of Crusareds. As a guide I must tell you these were technologically highly advance medieval knights, that included personalities like Henry Bolingbroke and later King Henry IV. Though majority of attackers were Germans. The most blody battle ensued before Easter 1362, when almost all crew of Vaidotas, son of Duke Kęstutis were killed. After Žalgiris (Grunewaldbattle, the castle lost its importance. It was abandoned for ages, only in Soviet Lithuani the main tower was refurbished, and it underwent the major exploration and restoration already in Inpendent Lithuania of 21st century. Today it hosts concerts, history festivals and many festive events each spring and summer // Kauno pilis pirmą kartą minima XIV amžiaus viduryje, daugiausiai dėl nelaimingos Kęstučio sūnaus Vaidoto vadovaujamos įgulos žūties 1361 metais. Iš 300 karių liko keliolika. Po kurio laiko lietuviai pilį atsiėmė, tačiau po Žalgirio mūšio ji neteko strateginės vertės. Kauniečiai čia augino daržoves, aplinkui kūrėsi žydų kvartalas, o iki XX a. dabartiniai grioviai buvo užversti. Pilis pradėta gaivinti ir muziejinti dar Tarybų Lietuvoje, tačiau restauracija ir renovacija ypač išsiplėtė pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais, kai čia vyksta daug koncertų, švenčių, istorijos festivalių – tame tarpe, Kauno gimtadienis ir Hanza dienos gegužės pabaigoje.
It is a small but nice castle. The ticket costs 2.5 euro.
If you like castles, you must visit it. This castle is one of the oldest buildings in Kaunas. There is a museum inside, so you will learn some history here too.
Beautiful place... The place was foggy in winter ⛄.. There is a place 500m from this castle where two rivers meet.. View around this castle is very beautiful.. There are few equipments near castle for morning walk / exercise.. There is a tourist information center and a big church in a lane beside this castle..
Huge area for sightseeing, it is allowed to climb to castle. Near it you may rest sitting on the benches. New statue of Vytis is very great! Higly recommend to visit this area while visiting Kaunas city. Nearbt there is cute restaurant, during the summertime you may sit outside and enjoy the beatiful view while having a lunch or dinner
A part of my heart always will be here. Its not just a castle with a big history, its a place in the core of the city, where nature and human being go together so perfectly. Big fields for walking and picnics or even for festivals like "Operetta in Kauna Castle"; playgrounds for children activities, equipment for sporting people, long footway leading to the old city and Santaka (confluence of the to biggest rivers, where Neris joins Nemunas). All in one place: history, nature and entertainment.
Nice castle and green surroundings with a clean playground to spend some time with children. Perfect for a nice Sunday walk on a sunny afternoon. From time to time there are performances around the castle and once a year in the second half of May there is a big market with local traditional products and food.
Small entrance fee to get in. Self paced tour to the top. Not very large. Something to do.
