Ganga Path, Kathamndu 44600, Nepal, Birganj
Landmark, ancient royal complex with various palaces, temples & courtyards, plus a museum.
It was a good place with worshipping temples. Situated near Thamel and Swayambhu Mahachaitya. Have many buildings there. Also so many pigeons are there. It was a great sightseeing.
UNESCO World Heritage site. Ancient, intricate, magical. Sadly, damaged by the 2015 earthquake but much remains and restoration of all is ongoing. This is one for the bucket list.
It was very nice and informative place. Here we can see the oldest architectural design. Without any machinery they build so many high rise buildings and theyre still very strong. Its q very nice tourists spot. Kids and students can visit here and they can learn more about past.
If you are not from Nepal youll pay 1000 Npr. If you will go with passport photo to the office you can get a ticket that will allow you free entrance to the rest of your stay in Nepal. This ticket is only good for seeing the outside. If you wish to go into the Palace and museum youll have to pay 300 Npr. It is worth it.
Kathmandu Durbar Square Carry It’s Own History which is Culturally, Historically important. It represents the History of Royal Nepali Family. Every Nepali and Foreigners who visit Nepal show go this place. 👑🇳🇵

Explore the culture or history of Kathmandu by visiting the Durbar Square. Located in front of the former Kathmandu Palace Kingdom. The palace here is stunningly decorated and the overall areas reflect the beauty of Nepalese culture.
Kathmandu Durbar Square is located in front of the old royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom and is one of three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.Surrounded by Temple ancient statues, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a meditative, religious site for spiritual seekers. Within the inner complex of Durbar Square is the site of the Old Royal Palaces known as the Hanuman Dhoka Complex. The Royal Palaces used to house the kings of the Shah and Malla Dynasty, who ruled over the city until the 19th-century. The palaces have since been turned into museums. The Durbar Square are is actually made up of two sub-areas. The outer complex is renowned for numerous interesting temples as Kumari Ghar , Kasthamandap , Shiv-Parbati Temple, Jagannath Temple, Big Bell etc ,while the inner complex comprises the old palace area ,Hanuman-dhoka and its. courtyards as Nasal Choke ,Mul Choke ,Sundari Choke, Basantapur Durbar and other. Besides the magnificent temples and shrines, it has other interesting aspects are various festivals , cultural activities and traditions people are following from centuries, which are presented in the Durbar Square. The major festivals include Indrajatra, Dashain, Gaaijatra, Machchhindra-nath jatra ets. These are the occasion when the people from all over the city gather here to mark their centuries old traditions. All the carving and architecture in this area are exceptionally fine which make the architecture in this Hanuman-dhoka Durbar square among the most important sights for travelers to see. I suggest all traveler to visit once in lifetime. Do not miss to past of Nepalese life style.
One of the best places in Kathmandu to hangout. The history and beautiful art of this place is really fascinating. If you are ever in Kathmandu then you must visit this place and experience the heritage and importance of this place.
Its always my passion to visit famous places. This time I had visited Hanumandhoka Durbar Square or simply known as basantapur .I was amazed to watch the artitecture and historical monuments in the place.I spent my memorable time with my friends. Its really a good world heritage sites 🕊️🇳🇵🌏✨❣️🇳🇵
Kathmandu Durbar Square is a chilling place for me and most of the people living in the capital. All the historical temples throughout the durbar square premises have their own legacy and story. It has always been fun hearing those stories. I also love the way how so many people come here to chill, make tiktoks, worship .etc. It was also enlisted in the world heritage site since 1979. Due to 2015 earthquake most of the temples were under reconstruction but now that every thing is complete the durbar square area looks even more beautiful. ❤️ I always have a good time while at Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Heritage place.... Lots of temples, great architecture.... Being rebuilt post earthquake....dont miss the Living Goddess..Kumari.... One of the must see places in Kathmandu
Unique very busy place in Kathmandu city center. This is a public square no entrance or delimitations with loads of people buying selling strolling begging and everything else but as soon as we were spotted as tourists some guys in a uniforms came to us to tell us that there was an entrance fee (apparently only for non localsto be paid. Not an issue of the amount but the attitude of the municipality dont seem correct ...
Loved the visit to this place, there were many small buildings, and all were ancient and beautiful, one of them Ill show you here. Also there were very small businesses set up by the local people.I did not like one thing and that is, there are lots of people there and there are lots of शिवलिंग over ther, if we see a शिवलिंग in front of us we have to make sure that the surroundings should be clean but no there was so much of garbage also there was a piece of meat near to the शिवलिंग which I did not like.I request the team, to make sure that the surroundings are clean.
The square is one of the most visited and historical places in the city. The square is a complex of temples, museums, and history. The museum you need to buy at the entrance of the square and there are washrooms and a charging point in the museum. There are many cafeterias near an open market. It also has a house of Goddess (Kumariin the square. The square is well connected to public transportation and usually crowded on weekends.
Historical place used to be a place for the ancient kings.Lots of temples and beautiful area with so many historical temples and building carving with wooden materials. Must be visit once in a life to know the culture and more intresting things. So much calm and overwhelmed. Best place to visit during the morning and evening time..
Another masterpiece of the Malla era with its structures and edifice; a place so bewitching, the world heritage site indeed.... Kathmandu durbar Square is the heart of the very city which has encompassed through glorific and dire times yet stood tall.... Beautiful temples all aligned with the Palace of the Living Goddes; Kasthamandap together with the blessing from Lord Ganesh and protection from the divine guards of Swet Bhairav and Kaal Bhairav this place echoes history along its streets.... The Tall Taleju temple standing up and looks roundabout and the grand Bell that chimes through this entire city; it is a place of grandeur, moments and togetherness... Be in cultures or festival this place always brings life and people closer.... Truly Amazing and beautiful....
This is another historical place. Also a place for shopping all kinds of stuff. There are a lot of roof top cafes around. Feels warm in the evening. Place looks lovely with so many people around. There is also a pedestrian street where vehicles are not allowed.
Nice heritage place for sight seeing…You can find the culture of kings and their ancestors, the way the worship the way they hold the history of keeping whole Nepal in one place.
This complex has many temples and shrines. The museum is under renovation. But doing reading prior to visiting this complex is very useful. I recommend Thomas Bells book "Kathmandu." It helps me to understand religious backgrounds of Kathmandu including Durbar Square.
This place speaks a lot about the culture and heritage of the country. Its basically a complex comprising of temples, shopping stores, eateries etc. I highly feel that this place needs a lot of maintenance. Hope the govt. does that as its a touristic place and more importantly its a place of the national importance.
The Royal palace of old Kathmandu valley with well preserved historical monument ,sculpture ,art , temples still stands with same dignity which catches your attention even after massive loss in earthquake. The major Interesting things to see here are Kumari (The Living GoddessGar, Kastha Mandap, Shiva Parvati temple, Bhagwati temple, Kal Bhairav and Taleju Temple etc..Vibes u get being within the durbar square is very calm and pleasant.Best place for gathering and can enjoy every sip of tea or coffee.Must visit place.
A beautiful relic of old Nepali heritage. It is wonderful to visit, however the lack of reaource to properly maintain and restore these historical structures is not there. Many of these sites are covered with graffiti and garbage, while left to the effect of time and nature.
Best place to hangout with friends and family. Best place in Kathmandu valley with full of religious and cultural heritages. We can enjoy every kind of food in this place. The famous temples are Sano Pashupati, Kathmandu Gadeshstan, Kastamandap, Hanuman mandir etc.
Its just awesome !Great aesthetic looks, great design, representation of great Nepalese history !High religious value !Its under rejuvenation process because of damage due to devastating earthquake. It has large area coverage,so expect a little walk. Its free for local people, and little charge varies as per BIMSTEC member and other nations.
The Kathmandu Durbar Square remains the most remarkable legacy of Kathmandus traditional architecture and history. Its an excellent place to spend a whole day with family and friends. Evening here is so magical that you wont forget in your life. The Local market is famous for jewellery, clothes, artifacts, and coffee. You have to bargain as things are a bit overpriced.
Durbar Square is the most popular landmark in Kathmandu. It is right in the center of city. It has several temples and buildings which are several hundred years old. The 2015 earthquake in Nepal has damaged several buildings which are being rebuilt slowly.I think they should have a protective boundary around the whole complex, otherwise lot of people, dogs and bikes are going everywhere in this beautiful area.
World Heritage Site in Kathmandu. Huge devastation occurred due to earthquake few years back. Renovation and Construction work of the Durbar Square area is still ongoing.
A good place to shop jewelry. I found one auntys collection really unique and bought some jewelry from her. You need to bargain here as the things initially might seem a bit expensive. There are a lot of good cafés here also. This market also has beautiful traditional structures and temples.
Great place to visit...Must visit and know the culture and traditions of Nepal. The Local market is also best at this place, You can get good quality clothes and other accessories in budget price.Recommended to all Must Visit.
its a beautiful place, seen in 2003. Sad the way the earthquake has devastated the iconic and historical site BUT it appears that restoration is at a standstill? Just another observation, there were less tourist but more locals who were spitting and throwing garbage all over.
The architecture is awe-inspiring. Its small enough that you could see the whole place in 15 to 20 minutes, so Im not sure why all the guides online recommend several hours of exploration.
Historical Durbar (Palaceof Kathmandu valley at Basantpur of Kathmandu. Renovation work is in progress. However limited access is open for public visit.Nepal government is having technical as well as bilateral support from various countries to renovate historical sites of old Kathmandu.Visit the place one during your stay at Kathmandu.
Good but under a major rejuvanation process. Most temples closed due to renovation.Lots of people visiting during evenings.Worth a visit, if not now then in the upcoming years when all the damage due to earthquake is undone and a new durbar square is brought to life.
The famous place since ages. It was the royal court from the ancient ages. Previously the kings family used to sit and work on the hearings. Along with the prolific architecture of Wooden carvings this place is having a lot of temples and areas of shopping. A beautiful place to spend evening and mornings. A must visit place.
Beautiful place, spend at least half a day. You can check the time and pay respect to the living Goddess.Origin of the name Kathmandu... explore.
As a historical place its really awesome. But its very costly for common people. The story of this place and the old structures and the designs are very surprising. Overall its good.
One of the most beautiful places that you can visit inside the Kathmandu valley amidst the city crowd. Youd need a ticket to get inside the durbar square which includes the museum as well.
One of the attractions in Kathmandu. Historical place. But now under renovation and restoration process. Lively place, full with locals and foreign visitors.
Heart of Nepal ..Lots of youngsters and tiktokers making videos here ...rich cultural heritage can be seen ..Kumari darshan is also a part of culture which is sold to the visitors. Can be managed in a better way and cleanliness requires urgent attention as this is the first place where every tourist comes to. Its a kind face of Kathmandu.
Basantapur/Kathmandu Durbar Square in front of the old royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom is one of three Durbar (royal palaceSquares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s very good place to visit and see they beauty of arts and architects. The pagoda styles temples and statues. Just a wonderful place to visit…It’s a great experience to be there..
Would have been so much better if you weren’t constantly hassled by sellers trying to sell you things or offering to be your guide. Nothing makes them go away and it’s not in my nature to be rude to them. It really ruined it for me though and I couldn’t wait to get away and couldn’t even take a photo without the constant hassling.
Lots of temple and kings palace to be seen..this place is quite huge so expect a little walking. Got to know many ancient cultures related to Nepalese people. A must visit place. I dont exactly remember the temples name but saw a black mandala by dalailama on the entrance door.
This should be a secret and beautiful place for religion. There is much room and space to bring offers. But al the old temples are under maintenance and it isn’t possible to get in, for nobody. You have to pay 1000,- roepies to get at Durbar-plein. I think it’s not worthy but at the other hand you will support the construction by doing this
Lovely place to hangout and worship. Architecture is old and magnificent.. Shopping can also be be Great experience as there is adjacent market..!! Nice and clean place..!!
Cultural and Historical place of Nepal which reflects the mesmerizing ancient art and crafts of people of Kathmandu! Its remarKable to know that the temple and monuments were built centuries ago!
Basically famous for Religious and history with malla and Shah dynasty. One of the best place to visit in Kathmandu valley. Within few minutes of distance, you can find anything youre looking for.
If you are traveling to Nepal you must visit this place. This is a historical landmark and a lots of Hindu and Buddhist temples are here. Large earthquake has destroyed this place so bad few years ago and it’s rebuilding in traditional style.
The name "Nepal" is first recorded in texts from the Vedic period of the Indian subcontinent, the era in ancient Nepal when Hinduism was founded, the predominant religion of the country. In the middle of the first millennium BC, Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini in southern Nepal. Parts of northern Nepal were intertwined with the culture of Tibet. The centrally located Kathmandu Valley is intertwined with the culture of Indo-Aryans, and was the seat of the prosperous Newar confederacy known as Nepal Mandala. The Himalayan branch of the ancient Silk Road was dominated by the valleys traders. The cosmopolitan region developed distinct traditional art and architecture. By the 18th century, the Gorkha Kingdom achieved the unification of Nepal. The Shah dynasty established the Kingdom of Nepal and later formed an alliance with the British Empire, under its Rana dynasty of premiers. The country was never colonized but served as a buffer state between Imperial China and British India. Parliamentary democracy was introduced in 1951 but was twice suspended by Nepalese monarchs, in 1960 and 2005. The Nepalese Civil War in the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in the establishment of a secular republic in 2008, ending the worlds last Hindu monarchy.
Kathmandu Durbar Square (Basantapur Durbar Kshetrain front of the old royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom is one of three Durbar (royal palaceSquares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
