Kotor, Montenegro, Dubrovnik
This Romanesque Catholic church built in 1166 houses many gold & silver religious relics & frescoes.
Very interesting building and nice mass service.
Very overrated, full of ruthless tourists and really not that spectacular…
Definitely you have to get inside when you visiting Kotor. Worth to pay 3€ entry. Inside you will find a lot of historic relics. Beautiful viev from the top on old town.
A beautiful cathedral that stands the test of time and which you must see if you come to Kotor.
Amazing and lovely town, especially at the break of dawn when there are no tourist (except me)
Nice church and beautiful peaces in its museum
Nice cathedral, don’t miss the upstairs balcony with a great view
Neat church with a surprising amount of art and artifacts in the museum in it.
3 euros a person… and not worth the visit
Well worth the €3, the museum above is small but nice, it could help to have the descriptions of the displays but still nice. The view from the terrace is also a plus and although the actual cathedral has been extensively renovated it still holds an enchanting space.
Beautiful church, with rich museum upstairs!
Very beautiful Catholic church with incredible art and statues. There’s a museum upstairs as well—very cool with ancient artifacts (think 12th century A.D.), paintings, and even relics hidden in cabinets in a chapel closed off by an iron gate. From the upstairs balcony, you can look out over the plaza below.
We visited Kotor and the Cathedral in Oct 2015. Its older than the Notre Dame it houses a museum inside.
Its a beautiful cathedral with small museum, 3 euros ticket.
The Cathedral is located within the old city of Kotor and beside everything else I’m going to mention one interesting fact, the Cathedral of St. Tryphon in the Old Town, which is 69 years older than the Notre Dame in Paris and astounding 460 years older than the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome!
The Cathedral of Sv.Tripuna is the most important monument of medieval Kotor. It was designated on an older cultural site, in which in 809 a pre-Romanesque church was built dedicated to the same saint. The cathedral is open for tourists, admission is 3 Euro. It also houses the Museum of sacral art.
CATHEDRAL OF KOTOR- This is one of the highlights while visiting Kotor, Montenegro. There are lots of interesting religious Relics to see inside the church.
Nice old cathedral in Kotor old town. Nice to view it at different times of day to see the light change on the stones.
It seemed like a lovely cathedral from outside. We stood in front for a moment, taking photos and looking at the architecture, but when we decided to enter, person shut main doors in our faces, without any explanation.it was approximately 1200 or 1300 and it wasnt nowhere close to closing time.It was an absolutely shocking and disgraceful behaviour.I wouldnt reccomend this place because of the horrible attitude and behaviour.
The cathedral was consecrated on 19 June 1166. Compared to other buildings, the Kotor Cathedral is one of the largest and most ornate buildings in Kotor. The cathedral was seriously damaged and rebuilt after the 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake, but there were not enough funds for its complete reconstruction. The April 1979 Montenegro earthquake, which completely devastated the Montenegro coast, also greatly damaged the cathedral. It has been salvaged and the careful restoration of parts of its interior has not been completed until a few years ago. The Romanesque architecture, contains a rich collection of artifacts. Older than many famous churches and cathedrals in Europe, the cathedral has a treasury of immense value. In its interior there are frescoes from the 14th century, a stone ornament above the main altar in which the life of St Tryphon is depicted, as well as a relief of saints in gold and silver. The collection of art objects includes a silver hand and a cross, decorated with ornaments and figures in relief. It is only a part of the valuable objects of the Treasury of this unique sacral building which was the City Hall in the past. Today, it is the best known tourist attraction in Kotor and a symbol of the city: the Saint is depicted in the citys coat of arms, along with a lion and the Mount of San Giovanni.
Stunning views of Kotor from above. I heard that you’re supposed to pay for entrance but I went here after 5PM and no one attending the gate. Pretty steep and stony, so make sure to wear comfy shoes.
I enjoyed looking around the Cathedral. The photos of the anniversary processions were very interesting as because we dont have many big religious processions in England but they are more common in Catholic and Orthodox countries. The museum upstairs was also interesting. The view across the square was a bonus
Old town was very nice. Lots of walking on cobblestones, so wear the proper footwear.
This was built in honor of Saint Tryphon (local name Sveti Tripun), the patron and protector of the city, on the same site where an older church had already existed long ago. They say this cathedral is one of the largest and grandest of buildings in Kotor, with a rich collection of artifacts and a treasury of great value since it is said to be even older than many famous churches and cathedrals of Europe.
The place you should not miss in Kotor, Russian style cathedral with immense decoration inside.
Original construction, in a small square of an old town section. Gives perspective on how people lived and valued their Church hundreds of years ago. Part of that great fabric of Western Civilization
Really nice old church. Make sure to visit inside, since it really is nice.
this fortress is a historical place. now a days, it is full of stores and resto.
Visited Kutor, Montenegro and spent some time in the Medieval City . The Cathedral was one of the highlights and walking through the Cobbled Streets, climbing up to The Fortress and relaxing having Coffee and Cake made a very enjoyable Morning. We journeyed by boat from Our Hotel, The Corine Kumbor and this was by far the loveliest way to travel to Kutor!
We love Zagreb, city looks very piece and cool . The church is city Icon you must go and get positive energy
Kotor is such an amazing town. Meandering through the tiny streets and discovering wonderful restaurants and cafes is so much fun. The Catedral is beautiful and small. The Museum upstairs holds some wonderful artifacts - small museum.
Historical place in tivat kotor, it was built in 1166, in a tourist place in oldtown kotor, a very small bazar very old shapes of buildings but very strong by look, this area called balkan mountains,This places is goid but only in night time, specially in summer,
A nice church in the old town of Kotor. Although entrance fee is charged, there is a small museum inside and it is tall enough for you to take a few pictures of the old town. Worth a visit.
Small little church dating back 850 years old worth going there while in kotor but not absolutely necessary. Decent view of the square from the terrace in front of the Rose window. Cant go up the towers. Small mueseum upstairs with a few reliquaries.
Very good view of kotor. It was kinda small and smelly inside. But good view nonetheless. Not crowded at all. There were people selling handmade arts and crafts. There were also people selling water and soda idd you got thirsty along the way. Ceiling was a bit dilapidated though. There were descriptions of the structure written in English which was very nice and helpful. It takes about 40 minutes to get up hear from the dockyard.
Rich in history this place is a step back in time. This is a way of life that has been preserved closely to the original time.
No tickets in Kotor old town . good
It is a nice and historic town.
Kotors old city is a beautiful maze-like city which is enclosed in walls. There are shops and restaurants there, along with one of Montenegros biggest attractions which are the steps of the Old Citys walls. Although beautiful, the old city is small, and theres no room to spend hours let alone a day there.
The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon in Kotor is one of two Roman Catholic cathedrals in Montenegro. It is the seat of the Catholic Bishopric of Kotor which covers the entire gulf, currently led by Bishop Monsignor Ilija Janjić. In 809, venezian people plundered some heritages from constantinople and preserved to this catherdral.
Great town focused on medieval touch and good for snaps. Souvenirs are nice and worth a look with couple of magnets to purchase from.
Amazing preserved medieval walled city / from the sea up to the mountains of Montenegro / with beautiful churches and constrictions which are still today in regular use by locals / outstanding for a 1 day trip or 2/3 days exploring
Lovely looking church with twin towers.its a shame you cant go up the towers anymore . The inside was quaint with some interesting items
A combination of orthodox and cathartic church that shows the harmony of the two church at that time as they fight against Ottoman Empire. The second floor has many relics the church received from many sailors at that time. Worth visiting the second floor as there is one important relic of one saint that is locked in a nice case.
Interesting church dedicated to Saint Tryphon whose severed head was brought to this town in a silver chest. You can see the chest in the cathedral but only the Pope can allow entry into the chamber. The facade has 2 towers with different height with different architecture mainly because they were built or reconstructed during different period and damaged by earthquake. The interior of the church is also unique mixture fresco (which is mainly used by orthodoxand framed painting (which is used by Catholics), demonstrating the peaceful coexistence between the 2 religion in this small town. The altar has a beautiful stone ornament depicting the life of St Tryphon, as well as a relief of saints in gold and silver
This impressive Catholic church dates back from the 12th century and it is probably the most striking building in the Kotor Bay area, not only for the history but for the fascinating frescos and other religious relics including gold and silver items.
Great place for game of thrones fans to visit
The oldest religious monument in KOtor ..it is.more then 950 years old, and still looks very nice ;)
Beautiful building. €2.5 entry fee though.
We went first thing in the morning and the crowds werent bad. Be sure to go up the stairs to the left by the entrance to see great art and artifacts. That area could be easy to overlook if you arent paying attention. If you want to know the names, dates and history, you need to purchase the guidebook.
