139 Reeders Alley, Helena, MT 59601, United States, Helena
Mexican dishes, including veggie options, provided in a laid-back setting with an outdoor deck.
Bummer that it moved from Reeders Alley all the way out to East Helena, but still worth the drive sometimes.
I had a good experience at Karmadillos. This was my first time here; I had the days’ special, 2 tacos & pozole soup. It was all very good food. The people that help me were very nice too.
Food had sat, restaurant dirty. Maybe a touristy “Mexican restaurant” but not recommended as a great local spot. Save your money and time. Not a reflection of Montana. Please try one of our wonderful restaurants.
This place is extremely expensive if its not just you and the food is over hyped I think. Not terrible but none of my kids liked what they got and everyone else was just so so on it. I prolly wont eat here much it was 70 dollars for four people
Stopped here on our yearly vacation after a long day in the mountains.... food was great.... owner was friendly and it was clean and tidy..... again food was good. I would go back if I am ever in that part of the country.
Food was mediocre and portions are very small. Will not be returning. I hate spending $60 to feed my family and my boys 15 & 11 are still hungry. We are not a fat family.
Outstanding food with beer from next door brewery. Santa Fe, NM flavors and large portions. Friendly owner.
This is probably some of the worst "Mexican" food Ive had. Not even Mexican, more Tex Mex. The girl taking our order was very nice and helpful, but the food itself was very....meh. From being able to see into the kitchen (where the staff looked just oh so happy to be there, staring blankly at the prep table), there were a lot of things that seemed to be cooked in the microwave. The rice was either old or not fully cooked and was pretty bland, the enchilada sauce was watery and seemed like it came from a can, and the tortillas for the tacos tasted old and were cold and dried out. The meat was decently seasoned, but nothing else seemed very good or even fresh. If youre in search of fresh and authentic Mexican food thats actually worth the prices they were charging, this aint it.
Rare to find authentic southwestern Mexican flavors in Montana, this place is just that. Every dish, even simple dishes such as vegetarian cheese Enchiladas is given attention and care as to make it flavorful and real-home cooked taste. Make sure to add rice to your dish as it also unique and interesting.
Outstanding! I love that they don’t serve rice and beans. Brewery next door makes it even better.
Best mexican food in town, unique flavors and a great staff and atmosphere!
Great service with a real authentic flavor. Being from Arizona and Texas it is great to have options with such a Fantastic flavor. One of the best places to eat in Helena!!!
This is the best mexican food in all Montana. Seriously, just excellent. Get the 3 enchilada plate with one of each sauce. Just awesome!
Good food, nice portions.
Great little mexican restaurant with its own spin! They rely more on seasonings and sauces than coating everything in massive piles of cheese. Definitely recommend!
Pros: The atmosphere was fun, the service was speedy, and the food was delicious. Theres nothing quite like good southwestern food, and Karmadillos definitely gets it right.Cons: They have a wall-mounted menu, and it doesnt list the prices. Its not a huge deal, since the prices are pretty dang inexpensive for what it is, and they do have a menu with prices on their website, but I did find it mildly frustrating.
I would not recommend this place. I have never posted a review for any place before. Highly disappointed in the food I received. Ordered chips and salsa (which seemed like two day old salsa and chips were awful. My takeout order was all over the bag when I opened the package and I held it flat on the way home. No "to go" utensils in the bag AND they forgot my salsa....so we had to go back to get it. Over priced and not good. Another note, dont bother mentioning their "free chips and salsa saying" it didnt matter....charged for them anyway. So disappointed as we currently are staying not far from here, have family soon to visit, but wont be taking them to this establishment!!
A surprise. Very good food, prepared well. Despite Google, it does have dine in. Even with the brewery not open it has an excellent clientele. My favorite remains the smothered burrito and the green chili pork soup. We have not been back enough to try the bowls. I am not a big fan of street tacos, but their tacos are average. Good, but nothing really special. Both their red and green sauce are very good. They have earned their business. It is not cheap by any means, but it is tasty so we return often.
Such consistency. One of the rare treats in the area, now in East Helena, with a panoramic view of the vast southern mountains. Its a definite must for Southwestern cuisine. Now with table service!
Best tamales Ive ever had! and Ive been to all 50 states and 57 countries. The weather and indoor atmosphere were perfect. The place is high on a hill so it has a cool view, too. Will be back for more. Check out their fun signage:
This was the absolute worst restraunt i have ever ate at, i have never left a review in my life but i felt I had to warn anyone who might think of going here. The food is over priced and my chicken enchiladas made me so sick I lost my entire weekend. Not to mention the staff are extremely rude!!!!!!!! I would highly recommend you go anywhere but here!!! Not to mention you pay before you are served thats 35$ for two people eating plus tip that I will never get back.
Great food. Kids burrito for $3 was a full size burrito. Probably the best deal. I had a veggie and beef tacos. The beer was okay but the veggie flavor were amazing. Nice outside seating area. Only a few tables inside. They did have a highchair outside already.
Karmadillos has one of the, if not the most unique location in Helena. Sitting right on the top corner of Reeders Alley, diners have a fantastic view of historic downtown and surrounding mountains. But, I wasnt too impressed with the food. I ordered the special, which was some sort of mix of chicken, beef, pork, and buffalo on a bed of rice and topped with salsas. Flavor was okay, but the rice was extremely under cooked. There was a bottle on the table with a warning label on it, letting the consumer know that the contents are not ketchup. Okay, it must be salsa/hot sauce then? I wish they would have warned me about the heat level instead. That stuff must be made with ghost peppers or something, because it was too intense for me.
Such a great place to eat at any time of the year. I take every visitor I have here because I know theyll not only be blown away by the great food, but by the beautiful view from the deck.
Just outside Last Chance Gulch. 5 min by foot. The nachos were excellent.
Great food in a very cool part of town that has its own small village feel. Nice views from the outdoor seating including a fire pit, and friendly staff, make this a great spot!
The restaurant was in a pretty cool location. It could have been nice.. but wasn’t. As soon as we walked up the waitress was smoking a cigarette right outside the door. While we were ordering the only two people who worked there were gossiping about their drama. We were hoping that the reviews meant the food would be good.. WRONG! The sauce on my enchiladas tasted like dish soap and even though I asked for chicken I got pork. The food was disgusting. The salsa was nothing to brag about either. If i could have given them zero stars i would have. Find somewhere else to eat.
The food is excellent with great outdoor seating and attentive staff. I am already anticipating my next lunch with friends or family here!
Absolutely amazing smothered burrito and shrimp enchiladas. "mind blowing, existence shattering, altering my universe". If you thinking am exaggerating you need to go and get some! Reasonably priced too :)
One of our favorite spots. Friendly staff, great service and delicious food. Especially on Fridays for the shrimp. Make sure you get the word of the day from their Facebook page for free chips and salsa.
Friendly staff and solid food. I have higher expectations for Mexican food but for Montana, it wasnt bad. Wish I would have tried the enchiladas. Cant go wrong with the chips and salsa here.
I love going here, it really never disappoints. Actually thats a lie, one time they were out of salad and so I couldnt eat their taco salad, it was a sad day. That being said, I had their delicious enchiladas with the red sauce. Ive never ventured to try anything else than their chicken but Ive never heard anyone complain over their meal. I highly recommend their wine margarita, with a salted rim of course. The beans they have are incredible and in all honesty I could eat those alone for a meal, so yummy. This place is small so winter months it can be crammed. If you can make it on a warmer day then do so and make use of their outdoor seating. They even have shade so you dont get a sunburn. The owner is there a lot and hes a super guy, always making rounds to see if everyone is satisfied with their meal. Love this place.
What a great find! The atmosphere is awesome, the people are very friendly, and the tacos were fantastic. Dont pass through Helena without stopping in here, and if you are lucky enough to live in Helena and have never been here you have been missing out!
Good food and neat location. Largely self service. Dogs allowed on patio.
The food was awesome, the space was interesting if not handicapped friendly. The service was sub-par: the young lady at the counter got my wifes order wring in spite of repeated requests to omit the crema. Then the young man who delivered the food was a bit snippy when he brought the corrected burrito.
Very beautiful location!! The outdoor highchairs are a little uncomfortable because of the proximity to the back of the AC. And therere lots of tiny bugs flying around while eating. Otherwise the service was great and the staff were very nice!
I liked this place overall. I tried the enchiladas and the shrimp burrito. Both were good. They serve some Mexican beers along with some local brews. There is outdoor seating with nice views.
Food mediocre and overpriced for counter service. Ordering process could use some help - an iPad just doesnt cut it for taking orders with a line of people. In other words, be prepared to wait. Not a bad place just needs some work on getting orders through quicker. Also skip the margarita and get a beer instead. Trust me.
It can be a little awkward to find this place the first time you go, since its up on top of the hill overlooking the library and Reeders Alley. Its a beautiful view from the patio, though, and the food is delicious--well worth a minute or two of confusion. (Or you can do what I did: take a regular out to lunch and theyll show you the way!)
It was a truly wonderful experience! The owner was very cordial and the food was delicious! I will go there every chance I get! Mind you its 90 miles away but well worth it!
Perched in a historical corner of Helena, this little southwestern food joint is a fun place to eat. The staff was friendly, the food was very tasty, and (when we wentthere were few people. The outside seating is nice, and the place has a lot of personality.
Good post-ride/hike spot. Deck is awesome with good weather. Flavors are on point but definitely "New Mexican" not "Mexican." Love the unique sauces for each meat. The portions are rather small for the price. Look on their Facebook page for free chips and salsa.
The food was great (nachos are so good! Toppings served beside chips instead of on them!and we stayed on the patio to talk for a couple of hours to enjoy the view and summer breezes.
Excellent little mexican food tucked away from the bustling streets. Its even positioned up the back hill a bit, but dont let that deter you. You get a great view of downtown Helena as you enjoy your meal on their front deck.
Great food and the atmosphere is even better! I am never disappointed. The green chili is delicious, and they have a great selection of beverages to compliment.
Great food. Spectacular views. Very secluded and accessible by either a tall staircase or the steep Readers Alley with a few shallow steps. Not readily wheelchair accessible. Most of the seating is outdoors on patio. Be aware that they are closed on Sundays and Mondays as well as for about an hour between 2 & 3 PM to switch to dinner. Expect to pay a moderate ~$20 for two to eat here -- meals, sodas, and a shared appetizer. The salsa is incredibly good. The soda is a buck more than expected, but free endless refills. Staff is friendly and courteous.
I went to Karmadillos with a colliege and his wife right after we finished some work training. Karmadillos has very modern, triangular canvas strung up across the deck to keep customers cool. They also have tables outside with umbrellas. The restaurant is perched right on the side of the mountain so it gets a nice cool breeze too. This place never disappoints, especially if you like Southwestern food. They have a delicious Ghost Pepper salsa that will leave your mouth burning, but your heart yearning. The sauce is just hot enough to make you sweat, but has the perfect amount of smokey, savory flavor. This place is a must. Dont forget about Shrimp Tacos on Fridays!
Fantastic food, the pork tacos along with the chips and salsa made for a perfect dinner. They ran out of a few options such as chicken and a few beers, but everything was great. The food has a bit of a kick but leaves a pleasant burn.
I came based on all the good reviews. It was gross. My tacos were drenched in liquid and when my husband bit into his burrito, a river of runniness gushed out and he had to let it drain for a solid 60 seconds. We left a 20% tip before being told that we had to serve our own sodas. The staff was spacey and slow. They calculated our total incorrectly. There were 4-5 of them just standing around while one person slowly scooped ingredients into the taco. Really disappointed with our meal and the service.
Great and friendly staff and owner for every visit. Authentic Southwestern flavors and one of only a few locations in Helena to find a cold Shiner Bock beer. Definitely recommend visiting this place if you are Downtown. A great deck with a view when the weather is right.
