The building of this huge, arched dam in 1959 forced massive resettlement of the Tonga people.
The Kariba Dam has a double-arch wall - curved both vertically and horizontally. It stands 128m high, 617m long and 13m wide at its crest, and 24m wide at the base. The wall spans across the Kariba gorge, creating a border crossing between Zimbabwe and Zambia, where people and vehicles can go from one country to the other.
place to be now... at least the work being done on the plunge pool is worth seeing🤗🤗🤗♥️♥️♥️
Kariba Dam is in between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Enjoyed ma time at the Kariba dam wall 🧱🚢🍾🍷 #Lake Kariba
HISTORY NEVER TAUGHT IN SCHOOL: WHO DESIGNED LAKE KARIBA?Kariba Dam was designed by the French engineer and inventor Andre Coyne. A specialist in “arch dams”, he personally designed over 55 dams, Kariba being one of them. Lake Kariba is the largest man made lake in Africa. It is a source of power for two countries; Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Found constructions going on but it was still a great experience. The views are marvelous.
Kariba dam is awesome... The boat cruising, tiger fishing etc .. The magnificent dam wall is a a must see... #Nyaminyami
The Kariba Dam, a double curvature concrete arch dam in the Kariba Gorge of the Zambezi river basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe. A beautiful place to visit for some air and experience great architecture designed by the French engineer and inventor Andre Coyne.
Twas amazing to drive down & see the dam but even more amazing to look at the 25 -30 meters dam wall..
It was superb but the heat just needs a Zambezi.
Zimbabwe has made it easy to get a pass and enjoy the views of the dam. HUSTLE FREE. The engineering is art. As much as the water levels are low, its still a beautiful view of the valley
Its our main source of power in the country, so I cant say anything bad about it 😂😂 but its generally a beautiful site
Kariba Dam is the worlds biggest dam based on water storage capacity. Located at the former Kariwa (KaribaGorge, the dam creates Lake Kariba, which has a storage capacity of 185 billion cubic metres of water and a surface area of 5,580km2
Awesome.... Beautiful sites and Serene environment ..
Kariba Dam is one the biggest man made dams in the world. Its water bodies comes from Zambezi river and Victoria Falls. It is owned by the Zambian and Zambabwean Government. It was built to facilitate with the production of Hydro Power Electrical supply. It being the oldest and biggest it attracts tourists from both local and abroad.
It is beautiful the work that can be done by men😊
Largest man made dam as in volume of water, presently the level is dropping rapidly due to a severe drought in the catchment area far north Zambia, Angola and Congo, 18 bodies lie buried in the wall, when they fell into the wet concrete being poured it was deemed more dangerous and costly to try and remove the corpse and hence remain buried in the wall, one day when the wall is broken down they will find intact remains as the concrete sealed the bodies from all air, other than that both sides of the wall offer very different landscapes
The place is quit good and the environment is okay I really enjoyed with my friend ...I think next month am coming again for a better views of the lake ..
It was a refreshing experience and the place is worth visiting
One of the largest man made civil infrastructure. A spectacular view of engineering of a dam wall holding huge mass of water. A great place to see whether crossing the border or as a holiday destination. Several water activities are offered with the sunset cruise as one never to miss. The drive to the heights gives one the view of the dam as well as the town. Elephants are normally seen around the location or near the human settlements. There is a fish farm as well as a crocodile farm all within 30 minutes drive. There are a number of lodges that are overlooking the dam. Great place to see and better of to stay for a holiday.
Great engineering displayed here, holding back the worlds largest man-made lake, Lake Kariba. The valley below the dam wall is a spectacular view.
The largest man made water lake in the world located on the Zambezi River. Beautiful Civil Engineering structure
Very strong Small dam that forms the mighty Lake Kariba.
An exciting visit to this man made wonder. An extraordinary and breath taking experience as we witnessed one of the largest man made dam walls in the world. It sits on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe and is both Countries number one generator of electric power. After the rain season ends which occurs between the end of October and the end of March when the water levels in the dam are filled to the brim, the Kariba North Bank Company which manages the dam and power plant opens up the spill-way gates to create one of the must see scenes of water cascading down into the lower gorge.
It was such a reminder of what can be achieved when people put their minds together. Built in 1959, the dam continues to meet a significant portion of both Zimbabwe and Zambias electricity needs. We spoke to a guy who has been working there for 30 years and it was great to get a bit more insight on the workings of the dam
The Dam is massive, i love the complexity of engineering that took place for the dam to be erected. The environment will leave you feeling fresh and connected to nature more especially on the Zambian side just before the bridge. The place is safe and quite sometimes wild animals such as baboons and monkeys are found, having food staffs such a bread can proof to be unsafe. The lower part of the dam is heavily colonised with crocodiles please do not go there. otherwise its a good place to be...
The view of the splashing waters from Zambian side of the dam was just so nice. The lake was also clearly visible from this angle. It is also free to cross from the Zimbabwean broader into the Zambian side hence no passport is required for such a splendid moment .
Zambia: Kariba Dam Plunge Pool rehab project
The best place ever, we enjoyed the road trip and few animals that we had a chance to see.
The Kariba dam is a man made wonder that goes beyond your usual proportion. Home to the famous tiger fish and Kariba bream.
A must see for everyone, this place is simply amazing
Very interesting place. The scenery was fantastic.
Its a wonderful site to watch..
Beautifully scenic views of the dam and the gorge/river downstream
Not much activity these days but, good for a getaway with friends.
Very big dam
One giant leap for mankind!A great structure and giant engineering feat you wont stop admiring.
Awesome experience. The views are to die for.
Dam between Zambia and Zimbabwe, on Lake Kariba
A pleasant view of the dam wall is provided
Wonderful work done there
Great place for a quick getaway!
A great scenic view, a place to see greatest architecture. Give a visit and see the new world. From house boat cruise to fishing to game viewing, all you need is there
Wonderful place. There is a lot of wildlife too. You can do boat cruises and if you like tilapia bream, you can have loads of it in Kariba
Good view of the Dam. Good for adventures
Wonderfully constructed and strategically located dam shared by both Zambia and Zimbabwe at the famous zambezi river
It was so nice being here.l had wanted even to stay longer just enjoying the view.
Beautiful view of the water, large construction engineering structure that can attract anybody who loves art. Forms part of the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
A beautiful place indeed. Would highly recommend this place for a weekend getaway and even just to clear your head. There are inns and hotels too just along the banks of the lake with great views of the lake. I stayed at kariba inns and I wont forget to mention the staff were friendly , helpful and professional. The food was amazing too. Really a place to be!
Awesome spot, saw some massive crocs at the other end of the wall. Fairly easy to enter from Zambia side with a "pass" of sorts. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
