Kandt House Museum - Museum in Rwamagana, Rwanda
The guides are friendly and really helpful. The museum is well maintained too. I would love to go again.
It is a beautiful place to visit.
Good for historical origin of Kigali city and Rwanda at large
Entry fee is from 2,000 rwanda franc but to have access to the whole museum, budget 10,000. The museum wasnt always a museum, it was a residential home to Mr Richard Kandt.
Very informative in understanding the beginnings of Rwanda’s colonial history. The staff are well informed and very helpful in guiding you through.
6,000 RWF entry fee for the Kandt House "museum" is almost criminal. Theres not that much to see here and I was offered a "snake and reptile" experience for an additional fee. Im glad that I declined it because the reptile enclosure looks to be an incredibly state of affairs. If you set your expectations correctly and are ok with the entry fee for what amounts to a few small rooms of information and artifacts, come for a visit.
Kandt House Museum, previously known as Kandt House Museum of Natural History about 1km west from downtown Kigali, Its under the responsibility of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda. The museum was residence to a German explorer Richard Kandt who it is now named after.Theres a wide view of the city from the back of the Museum (picture attached)The have a one crocodile in the museum and large collections of reptiles: different kinds of the snakes. The tour was quite quick as I spent about 40-50mins.Theres a tuck shop in the reception where you can buy books and some art crafts.Theres a visitors register where you can sign and drop a goodwill message.
It showed a bit of Rwanda’s pre colonial and colonial history. How they loved, ate, celebrated and treated crimes
A very good look at the colonial history of Rwanda. Most interesting fact is the house is the same house Kandt built. But the journey through time makes it worth a visit.
You are NOT allowed to take pictures inside this "museum". So if youre a tourist hoping to bring back souvenirs, forget about it. Makes absolutely no sense that visitors cant take any pictures of what they have actually PAID to see.
the history there was quite magnificent and it showed pre-colony era and much more cool stuff ,also, the streets are freaking clean so keeelo up rwanda🇷🇼😀👍
Shows the German colonial history as well as rwanda before colonization. The guide was really good and the experience informative.
Complicated process to buy the tickets. Rather pay in cash, as if you pay via card they will send the tickets to your email, so you will need internet access (no wifi available). Nice museum though.
Very good historical site in the heart of Kigali city Rwanda
One hour of history of Rwanda since its colonization by Germany and Belgium was very interesting.
We got a tour of how Kigali came to be, past colonial eras and the justice system in place before they were colonized. The tour guide was soft spoken, very detailed and patient also.I also got to see the reptiles they had at the museum.Totally recommend this place as one of the attraction sites to see if you are visiting Kigali for the first time.
Nice history museum and reptile park. Snake variety was more than any snake park Ivevisitedin the EastAfrican region.
Kandt Museum has the best view of Mt Kigali, Mt Jali and Mt ShyorongiThe museum has facts that explained evolution of life, description of Flora and Fauna of Rwandan Natural Parks (Nyungwe, Akagera and Volcanoes), geological background of Rwanda, German and Rwanda shared history and exhibition of live reptiles (esp. Snakes)
Kandt House Museum tells you the history of Rwanda in the early times, the start of Christian. You can also view some rept indigenous to Rwandan habitat
Best place to see in kigsliRichard kandth museum
Great place to visit. It is easy to find and it is quite beautiful incide. You get ticket at the entrance and can choose what you would like to visit an exposition which will tell you about culture, its history , crafts or you can pay only for the tickets to see the snakes and a small crocodile.People who are working there are really friendly and openly answer on all the questions you get.Highly recommended!
The excursion was really interesting and reptiles are also fine
This place is full of beauty . This is the only place you visit Rwanda 100years back without leaving the capital. Come and see go and tell. I love the history
A museum with great kinds of snakes and other species that inspire the generation to conserve wildlife. Very fancy.
Beautiful place and excellent people. Everyone was really nice and kind.
The only building you can find in Kigali built by the Germans colonizers, great exhibition inside about the German colonial past, importants insights of rwandese historians. Take your time to visit this place.
Rich history with a crocodile and snakes at the back
A very nice and interesting museum. Great and polite staff and very helpful showing me around. Kandt Museum is definitely my favourite and a huge tourist site of Kigali. I would recommend to go there if you decide to go to Kigali. A very nice museum and helped me understand a bit more of Richard Kandt. There was also a little alligator near the museum.
This is the only museum for natural science we have in Rwanda. My last visit was outstanding. You need more animals.
It is the former Natural History Museum, which was changed to Kandt House Museum in December 2017.I was taken around the museum by Susan, the museum tour guide. One of the first things I saw when I walked into the compound was the bronze life-size statue of Richard Kandt, clad in German military regalia with a walking stick in his left hand and a peaked military cap in his right.Kandt was the first German colonial Resident of Rwanda. He was appointed to the position in 1908 after leading the exploration northwest of German East Africa between 1897 and 1907.German colonists set up Kigali as the administrative capital and thus the museum is named after him. There are two main places to see in the museum — the main house, which contains much of Rwanda’s history, and the reptile park, which has snakes and crocodiles. It was my first visit to a museum in Rwanda so I took my time going round. The house has three main exhibits. The first part presents the social, economic and political aspects of Rwandan life, and the monarchy before the colonial period. The museum shows the evolution of the standards of living, the flora and fauna of natural forests, and geological features. The second part, which is also the biggest, traces the experiences of the Rwandan people during the colonial period. It outlines their history specifically under the German rule from 1884, World War I and Rwanda’s involvement up to 1916, and Kandt’s life. The third part of the exhibit documents Kigali before and during the colonial period, and its renaissance as a capital. The guide then took me outdoors where there was a large statue of a gorilla and an enclosure with a baby Nile crocodile — about one and a half metres long — soaking up the sun.The guide then led me to a small room of made of wood, which has snakes in glass enclosures. Inside lay some of the deadliest of African snakes. They seemed well fed and did not require a lot of space. I had never been so close to the Black Mamba, Gabon viper, python and the spitting cobra.
I had an awesome time visiting the Kandt House Museum. The history of Rwanda before we colonial masters came and their resilience to resist them a number of times is pretty beautiful.
Super eclectic museum. The main exhibit on life in Rwanda before colonial times was interesting, the modern art displays were out of place and the reptile pavilion was totally unrelated but ok if you like snakes, I guess.Student admission was 3000 RWF for the main exhibit and another 2000 for the reptiles.
Very rich history about Rwanda. Friendly guides, affordable rates and close to townThe reptile park is also there, you can see different types of snakes
Nice small museum with lots of snakd varieties and a small baby crocodile. You can also learn about the history of Rwanda with the help of a tour guide
It was a nice place I learned a lot about the history of Rwanda and what Kandt did at that time. also they have some nice reptiles there at the back, and a some good art work
This place is really over hyped though. Only interesting for lovers of history! Its not fun. Just Rwandas history before the war. But you can see reptiles in a section of the museum if you love them.
The only thing I managed to enjoy here was seeing reptiles and snakes. Well, if you love history you wont find the museum boring. For me its not worth the entry fee of 6000RWF
Learning of where Kigalis first foreign settlers dwelled is quite impressive. The first German settlers and roles. It further helps one learn of Rwandas old days, evolution of Architecture, and cultural heritageGreat space, with great readily available customer care.To Note;It needs a Cafe, or Refreshment area for visitors.
This museum is about the old German representative in Kigali. It is home to a great heritage of Rwanda history. It is clean and well structured, I recommend a stop by!
I had an awesome time visiting the Kandt House Museum. The history of Rwanda before we colonial masters came and their resilience to resist them a number of times is pretty beautiful.I like that they also have some live animals (such as snakes, crocodileand it made the visit also worth it.If you have some time when you visit Kigali, you should go there and you can sit for a few hours to watch the full documentary. My tour guide was patient and thorough with the details of the History.
I had a great tour. My guide, Oscar, was kind, informative, and delightful. This was my first visit to Rwanda and it was so nice to hear about the history of your beautiful city and country. I decided not to see the snakes since Im deathly afraid of them. Thank you Oscar.
The museum showcases history of Rwanda with specimens collected by Dr. Richard Kandt who chose this place as his residence in Kigali.
Good place to learn about Rwanda history and tribes.
If you would like to learn about Rwanda history, it’s suitable place to visit. A local guide is ready to answer your questions.
At this museum, we learnt about the Rwandan History. How it was before, during and after the colonialism.
Interesting pictures taken during Germany colonial era to Rwanda. Impressive to see how Kigali city center was been looking back in 1885s. Please dont miss this chance.
Beautiful old building in Kigali with exhibits of German colonial times in the late 19th century.
We visited Kandt House Museum on the last day of our 2 week Rwanda your. Found our visit extremely informative, the photo collection and history in this museum answered many questions I was wondering about when travelling around. We had an excellent tour guide and the captions now include english. The snake collection is fascinating.
There is not much here. The focus is only on the German colonial period in Rwanda. There are no artifacts to see just posters that explain the history of the period in German and Kinyarawanda. No English explanations. There is a small reptile collection in the backyard. You can see some nice views from the backyard, I have attached a picture here. Please do not spend time on this place. Just read Wikipedia if you need to be educated on this history of Rwanda.
As a foreigner the entrance is 6000 RWF which I think is okay. I was guided through the exhibition which most of the time only has posters/banners in German and Kinyarwanda. However, the tour felt a bit rushed. They also have some snakes on display, incl. black mamba and green viper. Overall okay to visit since it is the first residential house build in Kigali at the time.
