Kamana Kitchen - Indian restaurant in Hilo, United States
The food was decent/good, but the restaurant was really noisy (cafeteria-like noise where you could also hear the kitchenand the service was pretty slow (30+ min to get the foodas the staff seemed overwhelmed and didn’t really have time to take good care of everyone. Overall, I believe this place is currently overrated, and also fairly overpriced based on the small portions we received despite paying ~$17 per entree.
Horrendous and atrocious service, took more than 1 hour to prepare my food after promising 10-15 mins while taking the order and continued to make false promise that the order is almost ready. We missed our show that I had pre booked
Im really sad to give them 1 star, this used to be our number 1 place to go to eat when we were in hilo running errands.Seems maybe new management? Our chicken tandoori was burned and palak panner had old cheese or maybe cheese that wasn’t refrigerated properly. We had supported Kamana kitchen in kona and hilo for 6 years and we were surprised by how the food quality changed. The sauces are different and seemed to be water down. Dough on samosas were different too and not good or maybe they reheated the ones they gave us and texture was different? Obviously the management changed and recipes too, we are not interested in coming back. One of the person cooking and serving the food was eating with her hands in the dinning room between serving people.
Amazing well portioned food that I will definitely be getting again
Ive eaten a lot of great Indian food in places where the cousine is very popular and none of them compare to how great Kamana Kitchen is.
There are no other Authentic Indian restaurants to compare Kamana Indian Cuisine to in Hilo. But my wife and I have experienced many outside of Hawaii and Kamana ranks Highly for the quality and taste of their dishes. Chakra the Host is always nice showing his Kamana Indian Aloha.
Delicious and truly royal platter. We had been to the Kamana Kitchen on the West side of the island before visiting here and our expectations were met again. We ordered the Vegetarian Thali Royal Platter which starts with one samosa and 2 onion pakora with spicy sauce and sweet sauce. The main meal includes Naan, Papad, Aloo Mattar, Palak Paneer, Dal, Rice, a lot of pickle and yummy kheer. We were very satisfied with the meal and 2 platters were sufficient for 4 people. Highly recommend.
We have ordered veg biriyani and shrimp curry along with roti.Really very good. Must try here . Recommending others to.
Overall for people from mainland US, the food isnt horrible but for people from India, the food was at the most a 1.The Lassi is too sweet but the sad part is, the chicken tikka is almost just as sweet. The food thats not bad, is a little too chilly only spicy. The service and the ambiance could use improvement too.
Unbeatable.Perfect balance of ingredients and spices for every dish they have. Any extra gram of any component (or lack of itwould ruin it all but not with this family kitchen.Namaste 🙏🏼
Food was amazing. We are visiting from Texas and I would have to say this place is better than most of the Indian restaurants over there (and we’ve tried lots and lots of restaurants). Service was great too!
My go-to Indian place in Hilo! I usually get their chicken curry, but the vegan Chana masala and the pakoras are delicious too, and my friends speak highly of the garlic naan and the mushroom matar! Excellent spice blends, great flavor, and reasonable prices. I usually get takeout but it’s nice to dine in and watch the music videos they have on, too!
Wow! Didnt expect my best Indian food experience in the states to be in Kona (not Bay area, not New Jersey)Fresh, authentic tasting food accompanied by a chilled Taj beer
All different food options for those with dietary restrictions and preference. When door dashing or ordering to-do this is our go-to. The food is great regardless of getting it delivered to your door or your table. HOWEVER, I personally feel that you get more bang for your buck when you order it to-go. My bf and I order and feel like we can get 2-3 days worth of food EASY - but when dining in we can finish the food and MAYBE have small snack sized left overs.
In the years that I have lived in Hilo, I have just witnessed a steady decline in the quality of food here. They have the market cornered on Indian food so don’t have to put forth much effort. Every dish tastes exactly like the others, no real seasoning, it’s never made spicy, and recently the meat samosa and sauce have gotten worse. There is zero atmosphere or ambiance here and they still serve food on paper plates with plastic utensils. Every time I order here, I say it’s my last time but I love Indian food so always give it one more shot. Last night I decided I will only eat Indian food when I visit Oahu.
The food was awesome! Service was impeccable. The restaurant looks a little run down but dont let that stop you. I ate at many places that were very nice and high priced. Not pricey at all. When I come back to Hilo this is where Im going first.
This place was great- we got the chicken curry and rice and veggie pakora - curry was classic Vindaloo style - spicy, just perfect - they offered mild, medium or hot so you don’t have to do the hot but I thoroughly recommend it if you like heat:)
Refreshing Indian restaurant close to town with exotic flavors far away. Well be back!
Put in an order here for almost $200 and it was everything and more I’ve had indian food from all around the world and this is some of the best, flavors and spice levels are on point. Their lamb tikka masala is so delicious! Thank you
Awesome experience. The curry was on point. I absolutely loved the Indian beer and drink on the house. I’m glad I stopped in!!
Really really good! We were very impressed with how flavorful the food was. Friendly service too!
The is a great Indian restaurant. The food is always good. The menu caters to everyone from the strict vegan to the meat lover (minus beef of course :-Support local businesses it really does matter.
It was OK. Ordered a thali and they just gave me a whole bunch of underseasoned food. Saag paneer was extremely underseasoned as well as the aloo mutter. Daal was strangely smoky. The restaurant smelled kinda weird and the ambiance didnt exist. 2 stars because the naan and chicken pakora was Soo good!
Honestly their food is great but their business hours are so weird its hard to know if they will be open or not despite the hours listed. 3/4 times weve come for lunch its closed. Even on the off chance they are open, it seems their in-house dining is also 50/50 as an option. Probably the worst run restaurant in this town which is unfortunate because Id gladly pay for the food. Its Tuesday at 11. See my photo for the hours they claim to operate.
We visited this place thrice during our stay in big island and enjoyed it always. We had Vegetarian Samosa, Chana Masala, Aloo Gobi, Aloo Matar and Naan. All the curries were very authentic and tasty. The samosa was very flaky, tasty and very authentic. It was one of the best samosa’s I have tried in US.
The worst service I have received so far at any Indian restaurant. They made us wait 1 hour to pick up the food. HORRIBLE SERVICE. The garlic naan didn’t have garlic at all. They forgot to give chutney for both samosa and for the mixed grill. Then, the chutney was made from some ready mix which was so fake and the mix grill meat was very salty and small in portion. Not worth eating here. I wish I could give a ZERO star here.
Very. Slow. ServiceBait and switch with menu.We got here at 645. In spite of being top of the list to be seated, we see other folks being seated ahead of us.They really should update their menu to reflect what they can truly make. Whats the point of having kulcha and paratha on the menu and then saying they can only offer naan. I had this happen twice (didnt have Thali, couldnt make dal makhani)It took 1 hour for our order to arrive. How can it be so hard to make chole and kadai paneer ?My guess is they want to serve as many pickup orders as they can even if their kitchen doesnt have the bandwidth.Food is ok.For folks wanting to eat Indian food, the KTA grocery store has Indian curry meals admittedly at a markup.
Possibly the BEST Indian restaurant Ive ever been to! Delicious, fresh-tasting, authentically spiced food. Friendly, helpful staff. Our takeout was packed perfectly to make it home hot and neatly.
Having lived in Portland, Oregon and frequenting many, many Indian restaurants…this place is my least favorite. Luke warm Chai. Flavor of food is not really enthralling. Mediocre environment. Waitstaff really didn’t check on us at all. I’m not impressed.
This is the best place in all of Hilo for indian food. It is very authentic vibes including. Playing classic Bollywood songs in the background. And finally the food was amazing. You wont find such good indian food in most of the mainland. We had paneer tikka masala and malai kofta with garlic naan. The malai kofta specially was exquisite. Will definitely go back here before the end of our vacation. The service was a bit slow so if youre hungry i would recommend going there early.
You wont find any better food experience at the island, period.Everything is served so meticulously and cooked so well that you can feel the inspiration these people put into every dish they make. You just feel it. I can, so you will.Thank you, guys.Namaste 🙏
Ate here a couple of times. Some of the best Indian food we have had in the USA. So far we have tried Veg Samosa, Chicken Makhani, Paneer Tikka Masala,Chicken Tikka Masala, Plain Naan and Mango Lassi. Everything has been excellent so far.
Very nice staff and the food is good came here for a late dinner and was seated immediately. The place is a bit hidden but its worth it.
Best coconut curry ive ever had. The naan and royal platters are also amazing. If youre south asian or love the food, go here. You can tell the chef cooks with passion and REAL COCONUT!!! But under no circumstances should you go to the Kona location. It was nasty and disappointing.
My husband and I were looking for a new place to eat and found this place. We hand sanitized and were seated at a booth, served water, given menus but if you wanted, you can scan their menu...the NECESSITIES of proper customer service. We ordered and our meal was VERY tasty and you can pick your heat😋, not too heavy feeling but still, couldnt make it to dessert.I would DEFINITELY be coming back to try new dishes🤙
Excellent value, friendly staff, and great authentic food! We got a non-vegetarian royal platter along with a side of naan and it was more than enough for two people. The chicken Tikka Masala is excellent as well as the lamb, and the rice pudding was a great finish to a nice dinner. Taking some warm naan for the road!
I love Kamana kitchen! Let me just say it right off bat that this place is really top notch and then some. If youre looking for a restaurant serving up authentic Indian cuisine, Kamana is the place to go or order from.Pictured is some garlic naan, veggie samosas, (mediumDaal Mahkni, and chicken tikka (medium)It was absolutely scrumptious and service was lightning fast!! 10/10!!
Ordered delivery via Doordash. Food was very tasty. I ordered the chicken tikka with garlic naan. If you love garlic, you will love the garlic naan! Only gave 4 stars because there was no cutlery. I had to go hunting in our work office for extra utensils to eat but food was very delicious, will give another future try.
It was an ok place. We had dal makhni, it had too much garlic (for my taste). The paneer bits in kadhai paneer had fried pieces of paneer which left me feeling too heavy and a not so happy feeling.I just didn’t feel good after eating it.That said, I wasn’t expecting an Indian restaurant in Hawaii. And it definitely exceeded the expectation.
We ordered twice. Food is good but the first time we ordered I asked for the mildest tandoori chicken so that my infant daughter would be able to eat some. Some of the chicken pieces I got were spicy, some were mild. Not what I ordered. The second time I ordered I took my food to the hotel and then found out that they didn’t put plastic forks or spoons. You know that people here are tourists living in hotels with no silverware. We had to use and old plastic fork we had from a previous meal and eat in turns. A very bad experience really. The extra star is for good food but please do pay attention to these details.
First things first. Indian people run the front and back of this Indian restaurant. Delightful helpful souls always attentive prompt and polite. Food is real authentic indian food, always fresh cause the place is always busy. Enjoy a Lamb Vindaloo in the middle of the sea. Real treat, great place to eat. Consistantly reliable yummy Indian. Thank you, velllly much.!!!
Last time I went, there was a university student discount.Staff is super kind and friendly. Being from Hawaii, we are never really exposed to Indian culture or cuisine, so being here is a very interesting atmosphere, and Im glad I was introduced to delicious Indian food here!
I went here on a Saturday evening, and the restaurant was definitely a bit unorganized and understaffed so service was a bit spotty, most waiters are young, maybe college students. We waited almost an hour for the food, but the place was also packed. The food itself was decent, it was about average for an Indian restaurant. Ive definitely had better but it wasnt bad by any means. Portions were a bit on the smaller side (at least the Currys). However, its one of the only Indian places in town so if youre craving Indian food its not a bad place to stop by.
First time here today. Very spacious & comfortable. Menu is very detailed that I understood what I was ordering. Service is very friendly & helpful and wait time was quick. Will be returning.
Sudden urge of eating Indian food was fulfilled at Kamana Kitchen in Hilo, Big Island. Kamana has other locations in Honolulu, Oahu and Kihei, Maui but we were fortunate to have an opportunity to eat Indian food from a place that is far far away from mainland, considering limitations on ingredients and spices, this place ensured our taste buds would be satisfied. We absolutely loved staff’s kind attitude and joyful gestures, their service is quick and ambiance settles in with you quicker than food goes into your stomach. As a vegetarian, this place became one of my favorite to go for lunch and dinner (even though I am in Hawaii for short term). I ordered Daal Tarka (Yellow Daal Soupwith rice and samosas. My husband ordered Chicken Biriyani, he was enthused and very content. We don’t have enough words to say about this place but if you do have sudden craving for Indian food or if you are vegetarian - it’s a must try place.
One of the best restaurants in Hawaii and probably the best restaurant in Hilo. Friendly service and great food. The location is in the back of some shopping center but the food quality is incredible. If you like Indian food at all youll absolutely fall in love with this place. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with the highest spiciness and it burned like crazy but tasted great. The Chicken Biriyani was also delicious. If youre worried about spice you can order everything mild, but if you enjoy the heat it wont disappoint like some other places will. This place is a MUST if youre visiting Hilo.Update: Ive still been coming here and Im convinced this is the best restaurant in Hilo, consistently great quality food and service.
The food was phenomenal and surprisingly very authentic. And this is high praise for someone who lives in San Francisco. We planned a brunch stop here on our way to Volcanic National park. Id definitely go again! Thank you for your hospitality!!
#Indian Food on #bigisland of #Hawaii 3 options 1#kamana kitchen #Hilo, Authenticity wise, beats most of Indian Restaurants on US mainland. I tried the Veg Thali and Veg Biryani, both of them tasted good.Staff is also very courteous and Friendly.
Food was very good- lots lots spices, great portions of meat in the curries. Service was wonderful!
We have been to Kamana kitchen at Kona and this place is equally good. We ordered saag, garlic naan, daal soup and vegetable soup. The quantity is appropriate and staff is courteous. We asked for no spice/chilli for kids food and the food had no spice. Kids loved the food and ate every bite of eat. We liked our soups too. Overall, very well maintained place with good food options and consistent quality.
