Overall good but not great for the reputation
Went all in with 6 dishes for 2 people, so they almost needed a wheelbarrow to roll us out. Had a nice bottle of Pinot Noir too. Don’t miss the marrow, spicy rice cakes, short rib, and mackerel.
The food was good! The spicy rice cakes definitely stand out amongst the rest. For the coulter, unless you specify it’ll come very rare, which they call medium rare but trust me is very raw. Good either way, but if you aren’t a fan, then be advised. I had their carpe diem drink, and it was pretty disgusting so I returned it. The spicy rice cakes aren’t crazy spicy. The dan dan noodles on the other hand ARE quite spicy themselves, despite not having it advertised.The hummingbird cake was good but a bit disappointing.
We were celebrating a birthday for a friend and the restaurant really nicely accommodated us with a birthday cake and a candle for our friend.On top of that, the service was really good and the food was really nice.Truly a fusion experience.Would come again.
Came here as a walk in. Normally I would understand if a place doesn’t have availability outside of reservations, but the couple in line in front of us didn’t have a reservation and declined an open outdoor table. I asked the host whether we could sit there and he said no. We weren’t in formal attire, but we had a shirt and shoes on. I have no idea why we were declined that table, because no explanation was given. Pretty rude and poor service, from my perspective. Would recommend a different place with a better attitude.
Were we here on an off night? Was the chef out of town?The melon salad... tasted like plain melon and bitter butter lettuce. We didnt finish it. The bone marrow was great! The cauliflower felt subpar for the praise this restaurant has been getting. It felt very chain restaurant-y. The shrimp chimichurri was a few steps above that but nothing Id write home to my mom about. The mackerel was damn good in my book, if not a little simple on the palate. With the young papaya it was really pleasant. I wish everything had as interesting flavors as the mackerel, though so have a strong affection for this fishy fish.The cocktails had really good flavors and textures, but boy were they sweet. For my second cocktail, I asked about one with ingredients I was unfamiliar with. I was given a story about how someone asked for a dry cocktail and thats what the bartender came up with: basically a fancy white negroni. I love negronis!! Guess what. Very tasty. Also very sweet. A little too sweet.We skipped dessert to try our luck elsewhere.Service was good.So, were we there on an off night? James Beard usually doesnt let us down. The Walrus and the Carpenter the night before was great, and the burger at Taurus Ox was worth going back for, which we will.Joule. How can we love you?
The food is very creative and absolutely delicious, but I am not sure why more people are not talking about the drinks. I could tell we were in good hands by just looking at the selection of liquors behind the bar, but the cocktails were insanely creative and delicious. The amount of craftmanship that goes into the drinks was simply remarkable. I consider myself quite knowledgeable about drinks, and I had one cocktail that did not contain a single thing I had ever heard of. And yes, it was delicious. This should be a must-visit spot for anyone in Seattle.
Very cute spot, the tastes were interesting but overall I think the food was a lil over seasoned?
Everything but the cocktail was a huge miss. We made reservations weeks ago and literally left 2 of the 4 dishes untouched after one bite, the main steak entree and the (breaded, deep-friedcauliflower. They didn’t ask why, they seemed used to it. If I had to pinpoint one thing, the smoke flavor in the (pesto bacon shrimp(?)wontons and the steak was overpowering and awful. Beyond that, the “rice cake” seemed like they were going for a plantains with chorizo thing (?). The tartare was decent but the rice puff with it wasn’t good. It was too rich alone though. The ambiance and staff are very Seattle hippy meh. Very nice though. (Not being mean, being literal, one person had purple and blue hair the other was covered in glitter, very hemp fest stoner vibe not $100+ per person 4.5+ star date night vibe). Like I said, very nice but just the most confusing menu, space/ambiance, quality we could have expected. We ended up going home and making a small dinner.
Spicy Rice cakes were spot on. Kikimichi was Above average. Bar atmosphere was a bit lacking - small, no TVs. Beer pricey.
Lofty goal with decent execution. The beef tartare could have used more flavor. The rice cake dish was the best thing we had on the menu.
Really enjoyed the drinks and the food. Props to the bartender for creating amazing cocktails! A bit on the pricier end just so you know what you get yourself into ☺️ But will go here again — I thought it was worth it!
Great food, cool atmosphere, and friendly staff! For two people, we shared the scallion pancake, smoked tofu, crispy cauliflower, and the burger, and everything was delicious, though lacking in familiar Korean flavors. Maybe it was the dishes we got, but the most Korean thing was the side dish of kimchi we ordered. Regardless, all was very tasty! The mushrooms on the smoked tofu were a stand-out, and the curry sauce mayo for the cauliflower was phenomenal. The burger was simple but easily one of the best Ive ever had! The meat grind was heavenly and all the ingredients were fresh and super high quality. Both desserts we tried, the hummingbird cake and the cheesecake, were decadent and the perfect mix of sweet and savory. Id definitely come back to try more - maybe I can be convinced of the Korean element of the fusion.
Amazing. This was the best meal I have had in Seattle. Chef Jamaal, our server Madeline and the rest of the staff were so accommodating to a shellfish allergy and were so on point. All of the recommendations were phenomenal. Will be back whenever we can be because we can NOT get this meal out of our heads. 100/10.
Because of the raving reviews of the place we came to the restaurant with high hopes. But we were very disappointed. First the food. We ordered kimchi, beef tartare for appetizer and for main course mackerel and steak. To us, the only one that was good was the pineapple kimchi. The beef tartare had no particular flavor. I had expected a little bit of the umami taste from the meat. It was fresh but somehow lacking something. The only thing that save the dish was the accompanying chips. Then came the main courses. We both thought the fish and particularly the steak were way too salty! This time because of the saltiness of the beef we couldn’t find the meat flavor in it anymore. I think it was a waste a piece of otherwise good steak. The fish was less salty but needed the the accompanying papaya to break it up. And on the services. We felt the wait staff were short handed. They were not at all attentive. They only come when we waived to them for attention. We usually don’t much require attention but because the dishes were so salty we constantly need water to wash it down. But no one came to refill the water unless we called on them. Then it also reminded us of how the waitress took our order. She did not introduce the dish unless we asks specifically. It was like a robot. It was a very bad experience. But with all that unpleasantness the final bill included default service fee.?? So the question is should we have pay additional 18% to which we did but really begrudgingly.
Unfortunately Joule didnt hit home for us.The staff were kind and professional, environment is pleasant, and the burger was great.However how we felt about some of the other food was so, so. Details below.- The seasonal kimchi seemed to be pushed a bit far, even for a lactic style pickle, which is fine if it cuts through the food but didnt find a harmony between it and the other dishes. Giard by contrast was surprisingly mild (not bad!, just opposite direction).- Was disappointed by the Geoduck fried rice, which seemed like just rice with a seaweed powder like nettle topping with it, until I realized they forgot to add the Chinese sausage, black vinegar and seasoning mix.- The chinese broccoli was nice! Good wok hei/grill like flavor- well balanced by the toppings- simple, this was a nice a course.- The black sesame pasta was tasty. The soft boiled egg provided luxury, protein and contrast, while the morels provided texture and aroma.- The banana cake had a hint of complex ambiguity from the pineapple caramel, but the impressive hit was from the peanuts- which changed the entire dynamic.A 50/50 love/dislike for us, for us eating out is a luxury, when were paying $100+ for a night it needs to hit home.If youre looking for a great burger in Seattle, I would really recommend giving Joules a try. Great texture and fat from the short-rib, lovely crust outside, medium-rare interior, and awesome balance from the horseradish mayo and red onion. Many food critics consider this the best burger in Seattle.Thank you for the great service Joule, looking forward to trying Revel too.
The service was great and the food and drinks were fantastic. We were able to get a table for two on a Friday night without a reservation but we got there right as they opened. The patio is really comfortable with a warm fire and fully covered.
Massive disappointment. There is "fusion" which bring out flavors that didnt mix before for a new experience and then there is the disaster fusion where nothing is done right. Korean food is completely bastardized, even when you try to accept it as an homage. I wasnt expecting things to be authentic but after tasting the kimchi and scallion pancakes, I was "done". The chef was banking on customer ignorance on Korean food rather than trying to evolve it with fresh angles.As my pictures show, we had a variety of dishes. Every one of them a disappointment, either bland or over spiced without the balancing flavors Korean food has. Also Korean spices and style do not go well with certain vegetables and ingredients and all sorts of lines were crossed to create something that visually may look interesting but complete bastardizes the balance of Korean flavors. Perhaps the only exception was the steak but that was just good meat cooked well.Joule tries to do too much. If it wasnt for the swanky atmosphere, I wouldve notched it down to 1 star. Not returning even if the food served free.
Really one of the best restaurants in Seattle, in my opinion. Everything was so flavorful, the textures were excellent and perfect portions. The bone marrow is a must, as is the halibut. I don’t often order fish, but so glad that I did— it was so soft, flaky and the tapenade they had on the top was delightful. Great cocktails— particularly One Night in Portland. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was lively. Will 100% be returning soon.
The zabuton. less fatty cut, it’s chewy (more than i wanted), good char. salmon roe is very smoky. i have ordered the burger regularly to go, and have loved them (burgers are a 5).
Usually not one to venture to the pricier places but WOW was it worth every penny. Everything was delicious and unique, service was excellent. We had the tofu, kalbi burger, and black cod. It was all incredible but the black cod was a total flavor explosion!! I also appreciate that they are still requiring vaccination status and masks which I know is a hard choice for a restaurant to make.
Service was absolutely fantastic and the food was delicious. I went for the Valentines Day dinner special and it was a great time. They were even able to make some accommodations for me because Im pregnant.
Its possibly the best meal Ive had. Its the best part of Korean food mixed with other parts of the culinary world. Influences are everywhere in each dish but to dwell on them would be a disservice because its a whole new thing.They have small, shareable plates. I recommend the beef tartar, Korean rice cake, and the short rib steak.10/10 service and atmosphere.
Joule is a pretty fantastic spot--I really enjoy family style dining and it was very reminiscent of my experiences at Parachute in Chicago, a restaurant which I adore. We ordered probably close to half the menu at the time and our groups favorites were the beets, marrow, tartare, rice cake, gai lan. Cocktails were tasty but perhaps could be refined even further? Staff was friendly and fairly attentive; we ate outside and the ambiance and temperature of the gas firepit was great.
The food, the service, the ambiance… all top notch at Joule! We ordered the bone marrow, shrimp, spicy rice cakes, Chinese broccoli, and the cod! All were very tasty but my two favorites were the bone marrow and the cod, though the shrimp was also really good. You really can’t go wrong at this place.. and the staff made it all even better. Highly recommend it!
We had an excellent time at Joule. I found my food properly-cooked, profound and complex. All of our plates combined various different flavors, textures and colors, and it was properly seasoned (which is not as common as one would think). The space is minimal and the service friendly and discreet. I loved their wine selection and I think the food and wine is properly priced for the quality this restaurant offers.We started with the Bone marrow, and the anchovy butter, the leeks and the (celery?leaves on top created a dish that was fresh, fragrant, and balanced without being overpowering and buttery. Maybe a bruschetta or a baguette to spread the bone marrow on would have helped. Also, one of those marrow spoons seemed necessary.The shrimp with the green curry amazed us with its quality. Properly cooked, you could smell the fresh seawater while tasting it and the curry added depth and herbal freshness.The beef tartare was also excellent, the pine nut added texture, the Asian pear some balanced fruit sweetness, as well as more texture, and the aji amarillo aioli suited the dish well.The eggplant wontons were very interesting as well, and I particularly enjoyed the smoked trout. I amWe had a grass-fed ribeye to share between two people and it was really an impressive dish. I never had rib eye with yellow curry and I found the combination very enjoyable, to say the least.Our Joule box desert, unsurprisingly excellent, with the texture of the semi freddo to be spot on. The grapefruit Brule was a very interesting addition combining the fragrant bitterness of the grapefruit with the sweet bitterness of the burned sugar, and when combined with the coconut semi freddo and the roasted coconut flakes, tastes and textures all combine harmoniously.Less interesting was Ube ice cream sandwich. I found the texture of the ice cream to be not very smooth or creamy and the flavor not very pronounced. The other components of the dish complimented it well, but its a pity the ice cream better.All in all, I would gladly revisit, I am perfectly satisfied with my experience at Joule. I wish more contemporary restaurants that charge as much as Joule does, or more, could deliver the quality of food that Joule delivers.
Fancy food with an Asian fusion flair. The ambience was fun and friendly. We tried a little bit of everything and the menu is made for sharing.Highly recommend the Chinese Scallion pancake. I have had this dish a zillion times at Chinese restaurants but never with heirloom tomatoes. An insane take on the dish, and yet doesnt feel contrived."That" short rib steak melts in your mouth and the spicy kimchi on the side is the perfect sidekick.The grilled Halibut comes on a banana leaf with a coconut curry brown butter that makes the whole thing extremely luxe.The picture that I took is of the "Joule box." This is truly an amazing desert-- Fresh, sweet, creamy, but with intricate textures from the coconut semi Fredo. Honestly, all the desserts here are good, but this one was my favorite.
3.5 stars - Quite mediocre food but good service. We walked in without a res around 5:30 and got seated quickly. Ordered the Dungeness crab som tum, spicy rice cakes, and the mackerel. The best dish was the mackerel, which was cooked well and had a nice caramel glaze on top.I really don’t understand what the hype behind the rice cakes were about. Most of them were crunchy (not in a good wayand not as chewy as I’d expect. The combination of chorizo and pickled mustard greens just wasn’t for me.For dessert, we ordered the chocolate cremeux (too sweet!and ube ice cream sandwich. You could barely taste the ube.FYI - They add a 4% surcharge to your total bill for employees. At $50+ pp, I honestly expected better. The portion sizes were large (we ended up packing away most of the dishes). Ultimately, the flavors of the dishes just didn’t meet my expectations.
Highly recommend Joule! Fantastic food and great cocktails! This is a great spot for date night or dinner with friends.
This was such an amazing meal. Limited number of tables in the dining room, which are all very spread out. The service was fast and friendly. Each dish had amazing flavor profiles. I would highly recommend getting 4 or 5 dishes to share for 2 people. Their menu is “family style” but the portion sizes are on the smaller side. The smoked tofu was my favorite—if you’re in the fence about tofu, this dish is worth giving it a try! I’m not a cocktail person normally but the Jalisco Campfire was so tasty.

Double wow food!! I read the reviews before booking but this restaurant exceeds expectations! Supposed to be Korean fusion but there were Malay/Indonesian influences as well. Like sweet potato Lumpia-ie. spring rolls & also Kaya toast. We ordered the smoked tofu, lumpia, black cod special & the house favourite of spicy rice cakes & chorizo were all delicious and full of flavour. We sat at the Chefs table and it was wonderful to see the Chef speak softly and politely to the staff and they all worked as a team. Gordon Ramsay take note! When we got the bill the value for money was amazing. A must dine restaurant when in Seattle. Oh and the Joule box dessert is a must. So good!

Cute place situated on Stoneway that has an outdoor area with a firepit for the cold winter blues. Inside the bar is poppin and its busy. Industrial look but with clean lines and a brocade wallpaper. Line cooks and chefs behind the line looking prepared and even meticulously doing their prep work.Ordered a bottle of Riesling from WA state to accompany our meal. Slightly dry and crisp, perfect to cut the fattiness of the dishes we ordered.Potato Kimcheese Lumpia, sour cream + onion, chive $12Four little fried lumpia rolls. Tasty and a bit spicy, heat temperature, hot af. Liked the dipping sauce, certainly unusual to go with a Koreandish (like a tzatziki), but make total sense. I felt the rolls themselves were just slightly left over in the fryer too long.Geoduck fried rice, seaweed, pork rind $17Good sized portion to split between two or maybe three people. Wait whats "Bravo" in Korean? lol OMG, this was heaven. Normally chocolate tortes are dense and rich. This was airy and divine. Really! My family and I were super excited to try out this restaurant is that we had heard about and it did not disappoint. We loved the family styled dining concept and the environment was awesome. The rice cakes were unbelievably delicious and left my family wanting more and the duck confit was awesome too. In general, the restaurant met every expectation we had!

It’s a very nice outdoor flowing into indoor place. I have been here twice for dinner and I have enjoyed their food.They serve family style sharing plates. I highly recommend their spicy rice cake (they also make vegetarian variant of itand black sesame noodle. The octopus dish and their sweet corn rice pudding dessert were not very great. Cocktails are very nice.Joule is good for groups as well as for a dinner date. Bit pricey but you will have lovely time here.
This place is a safari for your taste buds! Adventurous, exciting, surprising, exotic. Every bite was exceptional. The fantastic creativity is an obvious characteristic of this restaurant. For the hour we were at Joule, the food brought us to places we never been before and we did not want leave. The rotating buffet is focused on quality, we were lucky to have the Peruvian themed options. With the buffet you also get a menu item. We chose the poncheta and the sandwich. This place deserves all the stars.
The food was good, Id recommend the chicken fried steak.Our waitress was kind of awkward. Probably the worst at timing her interruptions and made weird comments here and there.Atmosphere/setting is really nice and they accept reservation!Tip is already included.They dont have good coffee unfortunately, no espresso nor anything like that.
Loved everything we got for dinner!!Pictures feature: spicy rice cakes with chorizo; seared steelhead; ribeye; and cake 🍰The Cherry Blossom Lychee cake was so delicious! One of the best desserts I’ve had in a while since it was so well balanced and felt sweet without being overly sugary.
Came for a Saturday morning brunch buffet at the chef bar. Medium rare coulotte steak cut against the bias with over easy eggs and a delicious chimichurri. So good that I risked an extra order of sesame waffle with creme fraiche and smoked maple syrup. All were exceeding in expectations and the bonus of watching the chefs working diligently over the counter made the experience whole. It feels good seeing the attention to detail translate onto the plate and tastebuds. 5 out of 5, would come again.
This was a hard place to get a table for dinner on a Fri-Sun even if you try reserving. For the wait it took to get in, the food was worth the wait. The portion size here are like small plates to share. For our party of 2, we ordered 2 starter dishes and 3 regular entrees to share and it was barely enough to feed us. Food we ordered were curry pickled beets, kaya toast, geoduck fried rice, grilled octopus w/ bok choy, and the beef short rib. The surprise of the night was the curry picked beets, it was sour, tangy, then sweet, and savory all in a bite. The beef short ribs, kaya bread and grilled octopus was very good as well. The disappointment was the geoduck fried rice, a little fishy, not as much geoduck and flavor. Overall this was a good place for a dinner date or a night out, Id recommend a try, and you should definitely get the beets and beef short ribs and then add a few more to share.
When we got to Joule, we found out they do things family style with shareable plates for dinner, which wasnt what I was expecting. The plus about that was being able to try a bunch of different things. Since the food here is meant to be shareable, the serving sizes are super small and not enough to feed one single person as a fulfilling, decent-priced meal (seems like everything is appetizer sized), but the quality is there, so some things on the dinner menu are worth trying. Their menu points out the "favorites", so we got the spicy rice cake with chorizo, kalbi burger, and chimichurri & black currant mackerel. The chorizo rice cakes dish was addicting, and I could probably eat it all day long if I could, but the mackerel had the best unique flavors. I would have wanted to get another/4th dish, but this place is pricey given the size of the food at dinner, so its best to come here if youre ready to spend and in the mood for tasty appetizers, not full on entree items.
after having heard about this place over the years from eater and the seattle times, finally had to check out the korean fusion trend. took suggestions from our waitress on family style and ordering one item from each of the five courses. the rice cakes were easily the best although all courses were 👌🏼. only regret was not ordering dessert... great experience, interesting and inventive fusion food.
Am flabbergasted that this place has so much of good reviews...the only excuse am allowing those people who have rated this one so high is that they just didnt get a reservation @ The Whale wins and landed up here coz they were hungry and was thankful they got food!!! The food was soooo Meh and there were four us and a kid and no one liked anything in particular! None of the dishes we had was particularly impressive or had excited our taste buds in the least. You want to have a Kaya toast which makes you crave for more, you need to check out Cassia in Los Angeles, if you want to see what is a good rice cake, you need to try the one @ The Slanted Door in SF. Give this place a miss and walk in next door to The Whale wins and have their mouth watering and sumptuous Sardines Toast and treat yourself well!!
Joule has been one of those place which has been on our list for a really long time. Finally got an opportunity to try it out last week. And it did not disappoint! We ordered a bunch of items and shared it. Chinese broccoli was decent. Crispy eggplant and Black cod had really good flavors. But the pick of the bunch was Spicy rice cake (vegetarian). It was too good! We also had the Sweet Freedom and 35 Stone Buck. I thought the alcohol content in both the drinks was a less. For dessert, we had the Dulcey mousse fudge cake which was pretty good. Had a wonderful time here. I would definitely recommend Joule.
Great restaurant. We really enjoyed the food here. The rice cakes are a must order. The octopus fell a little flat despite ordering it based on a great review of it. The steak was probably the best order. It was their signature short rib steak and it was truly amazing. The greens we ordered with the steak were also money. The cauliflower was just okay. Overall great place for Korean fusion steak. The bar was pretty good to sit at.
Friendly staff and tasty food. Grilled octopus was delicious. Good for dinner and wine or cocktails.They have a bar, tables, and an open kitchen. Make sure to make a reservation upfront to secure a spot. If you walk in at 5:00 PM, its likely that you will get a seat without booking - I did. Be prepared to pay 20% gratuity, as they include it in the bill unconditionally. The service is worth it in my experience (dined there twice).
Friendly services, trendy ambience, amazing dishes. Smoked tofu is the perfect dish to start with, appetising in a delicate way. Spicy rice cake is a good mid palate teaser, spicy with a sweet kick. The kalbi steak is a must have, cannot leave without. Good wine choices. Quality over quantity. Highly recommend.
Great brunch buffet. For $20 you get a main entree and access to the buffet. Coffee was strong. Yogurt with preserved figs was really tasty. Bacon was thick! The steak had a lot of flavor and reasonable tender. Eggs made exactly to order. Waffle with chicken fried steak is a very tasty way to raise your cholesterol.
