John McCain monument - Historical landmark in Bac Giang, Vietnam
If you are American or pro-American, go to the war relic museum in Saigon or the Hoa Lo prison museum instead to learn about the “heroism” of Sen McCain and his compatriots.
Ok
this isnt john mccain monument. why would we build a monument for an enemy pilot, it sounds silly. actually its a war memorial about his crash landing and to be honor those soldiers who shot down and captured him.Text on the memorial“On 26 October 1967 near Truc Bach Lake in the capital, Hanoi, the citizens and military caught Pilot John Sidney McCain. The US Navy Air Force Aviator was flying aircraft A4, which crashed near Yen Phu power station. This was one of ten aircraft shot down that same day."
As an American, a touching reminder of the sacrifice made by a true hero. The subsequent planting of a garden at this spot has changed the character of the monument from one of triumph to one of reconciliation.
This memorial to Jon McCain was erected because he was shot down near here. He parachuted into Truc Bach lake where the memorial is located.
In memo of John
Good to drop by if you are an American. Pay your respects. Crazy to see the small little body of water where he landed!
This is an unexpected Monument to an American hero. Unassuming and slightly reserved much like the man himself. I recommend you pay a visit and then head over to the crashed B-52 for a nice walking tour.
A grey small monument where John Mccain was captured in 1967 during Vietnam War by the West Lake on the walk way to Tran Quoc Pagoda and Quan Thanh temple.
The greatest Senator. We miss you John McCain.
Well worth a visit to pay respects to an American patriot!
Nó thật đẹp, nó là một nơi không thể thiếu của Thu Hà Nội
Not much to see
Theres often a crowd of people directly behind this monument, watching the fishermen. With their poles, they drop the line into this pool in the lake, right behind the statue. Using no bait, they just jerk the pole upwards, catching fish by literally hooking them by their fins, sides, often upside down.
I think it is awesome the Vietnamese government honors an important American who once went to war against them. It shows their capacity to put past grievances behind them look forward to the future. It also shows that the Vietnamese are a generous and forgiving people. Well done.
Why oh why? Thats my question. The Vietnamese to English translation didnt make sense. The Vietnam schools take their children here. To explain and teach love of their country against all.
A respectful monument for a war that ravaged and influenced two cultures.
