Jizo Japanese Cafe & Bar - Japanese restaurant in Dunedin, New Zealand
Nice choices but everything we ordered was really sweet in taste …
Food is super delicious and well served. Service is top notch.
The food has been really flavoursome and the presentation good. The only thing is theyve always been pretty busy.
Lovely food and place. Sushis and etc had the most amazing flavours. Easily top 3 Japanese restaurant in Dunedin.
This is the best Japanese in Dunedin. Amazing entrees and mains!! Always fully booked for graduations - the food is so good!!
Nice place to share a meal and drink. Has BYO. Usually a busy place so try your luck or book in advance.
Amazing food and great price.Staff are Friendly and helpful A+++
Food and service were fabulous. They had minimal staff due to illness, but you wouldnt have known. Will definitely be back. Thank you.
Staff timing for service was perfect even when so busy. Very impressed and will be back
Bento box and salad was nice and good value but the Poke bowl didnt have much salmon, the pineapple was tinned and it was mostly rice. Nice atmosphere and staff were lovely though
Although we had heard good things about this restaurant we were disappointed. We were traveling through town, and perhaps at other times the food is tasty, this was not one of those times. We ordered the large sushi platter for the two of us. The pieces of nigiri were so-so with the exception of the salmon which was very good. What detracted from the meal was the substandard quality of the sushi rice - arguably the most important aspect of nigiri. The nigiri was placed on cricket-ball sized pieces of rice, which was either over cooked or under cooked - it was hard to say. In any event, no self-respecting sushi chef should be serving such rice. We have no complaints about the service, our waitress Emily was excellent, even though she was delivering substandard sushi. We hope it was just a bad night for the rice cooker, but we will never know.
Best sushi in town, ph ahead, quick and easy. Bit hard to find a park tho. Thanks mayor Hawkins!
The service and food was fantastic! We came on a busy night but we werent waiting long for our food at all. Reasonably priced and filling too. I was also very happy that they had a vegan menu. We will definitely be back.
Yum yum yum! Delicious food
My first time here. Beautiful food and awesome service. We are already deciding when our next visit will be.Go and enjoy. Highly recommended.
Food is the best, great staff, busy restaurant, best to book ,sorry pics are a bit dark, forgot flash
Sushi ball, vege curry rice were nice.
Omg wonderful place cheap filling flavorful meals.
We ordered take away meals. The food was fresh and delicious. The staff were busy but still remained very pleasant and attentive whilst we waited. Will be going back for a sit down meal when we have more time.
Amazing food, nice presentation, great service and atmosphere! They changed the wrong order immediately without a question! Thanks for that! Food portion was value for money!
Great Japanese fusionQuick service never disappoints
Got takeaways from this iconic restaurant. Loved every bit of it. From keto sushi to crispy tofu, every offering was delicious and full of satisfying umami flavors
Had Japanese curry here about a decade ago. I remembered it being really good. Came back to Dunedin for a visit and decided to come again for the curry. The curry, udon were very good. The only problem was the rice that came with curry was quite mushy/overcooked.
Staff are really friendly and the food is great. Definitely recommend the spicy salmon poke bowl, just needs a bit more spice. Only got a tickle.
Delicious food, good staff and always busy! Quick takeout too though. Will always be back!
Very busy and service was good. Sushi was great, as were the spring rolls and gyozas. Tempura was huge and batter quite thick. Not fantastic but not bad either. Not a quiet place when busy but it was a nice night out.
Delicious food, nicely presented.Wait staff were available but not overbearing. An enjoyable dining experience
Really enjoyed the food here tonight. A great range to choose from, reasonably priced and great service. Will be back!
We went there to have a dinner at night with my friend. We were barely greeted by the pregnant waitress who was in a terrible mood apparently. She sat us at the front of the restaurant just near the door but with the wind it was very cold. We nicely ask if we could sit somewhere else but she refused, first she told us that she could sit us upstairs once another waitress will start her shift but we needed to wait, so we asked if me could just move to the table next to us which was a table for 4, she told us no in case a bigger group will show up.. Worst service ever, all we wanted was to enjoy a dinner but this girl wasnt in the mood for it. In those time, keep the customers that actually show up and not the one that might. Cant judge the food as we left the restaurant. But wont be back there.
Absolutely brilliant. Delicious food and the staff are extremely welcoming. Will be coming back for sure.
Amazing!!!! We began with sushi balls - Devine! Great options including vegan. This place was pumping for a reason. Great food and atmosphere
Service is really good. The food is just okay.
From my first ever date here, to many meals since, I have enjoyed every single one of them. The food is absolutely fantastic, the staff are always an absolute joy, the price is beyond affordable (although dont tell them, they might put it up!), and the overall experience is always a 6/5. Would recommend to anyone who eats food, it cannot be gone passed!Signed:Batman
Amazing food and staff. We arrived on the evening of the Midwinter Carnival and the place was pumping. The staff were super friendly and organised and we were well looked after. The food took a little longer than we had hoped, as we had two starving kids, but it was to be expected since the place was packed. The only improvement we could have thought of would be having some kids activities available. Even if it was just paper and pencils, it would have helped a lot with out wait.Once the food arrived, we were all very happy. Great bento box, curry, sushi balls etc. You cant go wrong with almost anything on the menu.If youre looking for a nice night out, Jizo can definitely make it happen. Bookings recommended on busy nights!
food was delicious, and lots to choose from!their salmon sushi is to die for omgplus theres separate vegan and keto menus which is pretty cool
Absolute must-visit if youre in Dunedin. Top quality Japanese food at really reasonable prices. Great flavours, great portion sizes and friendly staff. The mini rice balls are a definite must-try.
If you want to enjoy the authentic Japanese foods real close to them in Japan, come and try here. A bit of waiting time for mine during busy lunch time but worth to wait...
Great value for money. All four of us enjoyed our meal. Nicely presented.
Nicely presented dishes and they were tasty 👍
Amazing Japanese, best I’ve had since going to Japan! We came here for dinner on our first and last night in Dunedin (it was that tasty)! The restaurant can be quite busy but we didn’t need to wait for longer than 10 minutes for a table. The food is very cheap for the size of meal you get comparative with other Japanese restaurants. There is a whole vegetarian and vegan menu, as well as “normal” menu. There are also some clever twists like Paleo sushi which substituted rice with cauliflower and cream cheese (which was delicious)! The wait staff are young and really onto it and friendly. Highly recommended!
Was recommended by friends to try this place out as they very much enjoyed the food. I went last week for a friends birthday with a large group of people and overall did not enjoy my time, quite frankly my experience was not a nice one. One server forced one of my friends and I to order more food which was just nonsense, she also kept trying to take our food away when we were still eating from said plate -to conclude the server did not treat or speak to us nicely which had quite an effect on my whole evening. When my friends and I were all paying we were charged an extra $9 for something we didnt even order. Food was also undercooked. Disappointed and will not be coming back.
Great location, and beautifully designed with two floor levels and vibrant decor. The food was very well presented and tasted delicious for that great Japanese food experience. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Will go here again for another lovely dinner and some warm sake
Besides the lovely atmosphere the sushi is fantastic a priced amazingly well. The sushi come with a dish for soy sauce and you get nice chopsticks not wooden ones.Im in love with the art on the walls and the service is great.Warning: this place is packed!
It was a great dinner with my family. I enjoyed all. Although they were busy, food was quickly came to us. I also ordered soft drink but next time please they give me with the ice:)
Great food but should work on the service. Busy night but slow/poor service
Great Japanese food in a cool building and close to the middle of town.
Good staff, very accommodating and kind. I had to go to work and had 20mins but the guy taking my order fast forwarded it to the chef and I got it in 10 mins though there was a big line of orders. And yea the food is tasty.
I heard a good review about this place so I took my colleagues here and I regretted.Price is fair and staffs are okay. The tastes of food were below the average and portion is a bit small.Vege upon has too plain, other udons were too salty. Some colleagues couldnt finish the food and I should feel guilty. Most of all, too long lone for order our food since the number of staffs are too small, compared the number of the tables. Even after we ordered food, we had to wait very long time and the food didnt came together. We were 11 people, and when the last food arrived some finished their dinner already. So sorry for hard working staffs but the owner should consider how many staffs needed seriously. Even though the customer should get the stuff by themselves, its not running smoothly.I dont recommend this place at all and a bit upset that why this place was recommended to me =/
Got a bento box as I couldnt decide between all the delicious looking choices. Wanted to eat a lot more. Friendly staff too - thank you :(was less sure about the plastic / metal chopsticks...)
Standard Japanese menu. Service is limited and slightly slow. Price is fairly low. Teriyaki flavor was not bad, but wasnt great either.
