Thai-style teak house by American entrepreneur Jim Thompson offering guided tours in many languages.
Thus place is amazing as a matter of fact I be able to put this to. My YouTube channel. Highly recommended for youngsters and foreigners. The souvinirs a bit pricey yet quality.
Beautiful house museum. Built with such details and symmetry. No entrance fee but you need to pay tour service for 100 or 200 baht per person (I forgot). The tour guide was really informative.Gave a lot of fascinating information about Jim Thompson and his silk business. You won’t aware that you passed 45 minutes for the tour.
The former property of the textile entrepreneur who disappeared in 1967 and who still enjoys the highest reputation in Thailand today. The building complex, surrounded by a garden, is now managed by his foundation as a museum.Besides the impressive traditional Thai buildings that were transported from Ayutthaya to Bangkok by Thompson and its extensive antique art collection (vases, paintings, sculptures, furniture…), I was particularly fascinated by the view from the house into the wonderful garden.A peaceful green oasis in the middle of the city.Photos in and around the house were allowed during my tour (considering the privacy of the other tour participants). For me a must visit in Bangkok.
Nice to visit once. Wood structures are good to experience.
Good for historical knowledge. Can be reached by bus then walk a few hundred meters. Use of Google map is recommended. You only visit inside the main house by following in-house guide.
Can only visit the place with guided tours so please be prepared to accommodate to the timing of the tours. Entry per person is THB 200 (as of Aug 2022). There is a Cafe available for dine in for those who wants to have a bite.
Thai old houses are made up from teak... not many houses left to be seen nowaday, especially in Bangkok. Ticket for tour guide is THB 200.
Visited the shop to get my parents a gift during my trip. Best to look at times for the museum showings - when I arrived I had to wait a bit so I ended up not viewing and only shopped.
Ironically it is an American house that is one of the nicer traditional Thai style building in Bangkok. Refreshing to see near the modern shopping malls and huge hotels of Siam. His story is quite interesting. Check the tour times first though to get the best out of it.
While the house itself is beautiful and contains items that represent the Thai culture, the tour was quite weak. It was especially annoying that the tour guide repeatedly told us that we could revisit the rooms once the tour was over and then we were not allowed to go back up.
The famous JT, literally all locals know of the story of the American who revived the Thai silk industry and msyteriously disappeared in the 60s in Malaysia.Museum is very well preserved (his housewith alot of antiques. Small but loaded with materials and his private collection. Guided your avail in Eng and French, costs about 200thb.
Lovely oasis of peace and quiet in chaotic Bangkok! The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. I heard that the visit can be done in multiple languages, I saw a French-speaking and an English-speaking guide, with very good command of the languages. You cannot visit it by yourself, first you need to take the tour, then youre welcome to stay in the compound for as long as you wish. The main house can be visited only with the guide.Tip: the canal behind the house has a local market and a bridge with authentic views of the city.
I wanted to go to the national museum but it was closed that day so I came here instead. 200 baht per pax with English tour guide is quite a deal.Near BTS National Stadium, inside a lane. The only thing is, the lack of sign in the compound is a letdown. After I paid for the entrance, I dont know where to start and where to meet the guide. The staffs were inattentive when they saw me walking around myself without telling me what to do.After I walked around by myself, I was denied to enter the main house. Then only the staffs told me to follow the guided group.Anyway, the tour was nice and very detailed. The house itself is full of stories and antique collections. The ticket also includes the entrance to the Jim Thompson Art Center which is beside the museum. The Jim Thompson cafe is nice but pricey. Good place to avoid the heat anyway.
I loved the house, gardens and various art works on display, the tour was great, a fascinating look into the life and history of Jim Thompson. Definitely geared towards western tourists, however still fascinating and does tell the story of the traditional Thai silk industry. Very nice silk shop and cafe attached as well, with a lot of modern designs in.
Beautiful museum to explore! The house is amazing and offers a good example of traditional architecture. Tours are conducted in English and French. I highly recommend it, since it was relaxing to disconnect from the noisy city in this peaceful environment. Tickets can be purchased at the gate
House on the Klong. Nice wooden Thai Style Building surrounded by a lush garden. Nice small cafe as well Worth a visit .
Nice place to visit if you are in Bangkok and looking to know more about history of this country and see some rare artifacts
Beautiful collection by a true lover of Thailand. Particularly impressed by the fact that this house was built bringing and merging various smaller traditional houses into one. The artifacts from all over Thailand and beyond both have all their own history and beautify the place together. Great for history lovers and interior design enthusiasts alike.
Nice little tour through the really beautiful mansion of the CIA agent and silk mogul Jim Thompson. The place was not left in its original state and some parts of the house are a museum now.You get cold drinks in the beautiful cafe of the museum to cool you down, the prices are rather high though. Not recommended for children.
Good place to visit. Its a simple yet sophisticated house. Works as an example of how good architecture can be.They offer tours in different languages. The museum has a restaurant and a building where theres an exhibition and shop.Entrance fee : Adult 200 baht, visitors under 22 years 100 baht (ID required), free entry for children under 10 years of age when accompanied by an adult.
Nice museum to end your trip in bangkok, the food is also nice
The museum isnt expensive and the houses/artwork are nice to look. The guided tour was relatively interesting but didnt seem to include any of the (what would presumably have been more interestingdetails about Jim Thompsons involvement with the CIA, which seems like a bit of a missed opportunity.
Nice museum house. I loved the tour, the guide explained the history very well. I love how she pointed out the little quirks that Jim Thompson did to the house to make it unique from Thai houses.
Interesting place…hadn’t heard of it until my third trip to Bangkok. Glad to have checked it out, lots of interesting antiques and a simple 30 min tour. Worth a visit.
It’s nice place if you have free time and nothing to do , for me there more and more places need to be visited more than this one and entrance 200 bat include the tour inside the place
I was a very nice 1.5 hour experience, no shoes allowed inside the house, you get a personal english speaking guide who takes you around the house. Its said that the house is fully made of teak wood and not even a single iron nail is used. Doors and windows are parallellogram believed to strengthen the house. Jim thomson only lived in the house for 8 years he had no offspring and later the house was given to Thai government be Jims niece and funds that come from tickets are used for maintaining the house. There is a cute cafe in the premise where you can grab a little snack. easy access to metro station its walking distance away. Next to siam paragon.
Jim Thompson was a Military intelligence officer who was a great fan of Thailand. He build a very traditional house in Bangkok and went into the silk business. He then disappeared while travelling in Malaysia, a little later his house became famous for the traditional way it was build an was made into a museum. A must visit in Bangkok for only 200bath you can visit the little houses and the main house. After your visit you can eat and drink something in the near restaurant or take a stroll around the garden area and take some pictures. Inside the house is is prohibited to take pictures! All in all a good experience
Interesting walk and to see some well collected art from all around Thailand. Not much silk in the home but apparently it’s in the museum. Tour guide was nice but spoke too fast in broken English.
Lovely visit. The place is amazing and the guides tour is also nice.
It was well worth the visit to see this awesome home, garden, & museum! You will see a collection of amazing art work gathered from throughout S.E. Asia. Also, there are Buddha statues dating back to the 7th century A.D. The Thompson museum is a must see in Bangkok. Plus, a guided tour was included with the 200 Bhat ($5.90ticket price!
Lovely for a visit! It is such a well kept garden and the houses are truly fascinating, giving an insight into Thai culture youd easily miss in Bangkok otherwise. Staff were lovely and you get a short tour around.
100Baht entry fee which includes a tour. (not optionalgood value for money and very insightful. staff are friendly but as there was multiple tours for multiple languages at the same time, it was sometimes a little unorganised when groups would clash in one room. But, overall, good experience and would recommend.
Wonderful museum with an interesting history and a fantastic display of Thai art collected by a man who fell in love with Thai culture many years ago. Totally worth checking out while in Bangkok. We arrived at 3pm but the english tour started at 5pm so we had to wait a little before it began. You cannot enter the house without a tour guide so please be aware of this before going and call ahead to find out when the next tour is taking place so you do not have to wait like we did.
Highly recommend to go if you are into arts, designs and architecture. This house/museum is a fine piece of not only the collections but also how well they are organised and placed. Added on top of course is the myth of the legend himself
Great guided tour and it was only about 35 minutes. Beautiful home and gardens. Definitely worth the 200 baht!
Interesting example of chinoiserie and many beautiful religious antiquities (purchased when it was still legal to buy looted items). Gorgeous, well-maintained wealthy mans house that is now a public museum. Would have liked more history of the silk trade. Tour guide spoke excellent English.Gift shop is expensive and the art center next door had a single exhibit that wasnt engaging in the way intended.
I visited today. I expected interesting stories about Jim Thompson specifically his life, the beautiful Thai house (elements and interesting featuresand JT’s role towards reviving the Thai silk industry. Nothing. The snippets of stories were probably just read by the guide from the ticket information page. Our guide didn’t do well on storytelling, not knowledgable enough and could not deliver with enthusiasm. Also, she focused more on the museum collection, certain things that have basic information and are least interesting, e.g. the statue is from Burma, or the ceramics are from China, etc. So I end up just reading online. Paying 200 baht was not worth it. Sadly I wouldn’t recommend this to my friends, until they improve.Anyway, the Thai house is really beautiful and the garden is amazing.
Pretty cool experience. It’s a beautiful and old wooden house with interesting and eccentric additions. Jim Thompson was an American silk tycoon who fell in love with Thailand and made it his permanent home. He disappeared without explanation in Myanmar in the 1960s.He has some wonderful and quite amazing artifacts in the house, including a sculpture from the 7th century. The tour is only 200 baht and it’s fairly informative. The garden is a highlight—it’s breathtakingly beautiful.Overall, this is a good experience, but it’s not incredible. The tour is a bit short, the house is a bit small, and there’s not too much additional “woo” for your buck.
Very nice, unique Thai traditional decoration concept design, unique traditional Thai restaurant, with creative ingredients menu, and silk clothes.
Famous place and well known for foreigners, Jim Thompson House Museum.Hidden gem located center of BKK, visit traditional and antique house. Also enjoy Thai cuisine , specially Khoa chae ข้าวแช่.
I visited Jim Thompson House Museum for lunch with my best friends. The atmosphere and layout were fantastic. We came for Thai cuisine and khao chae, as the signature dish for Summer. I was enjoy and happy to be here.
Interesting museum, nice scenery and relics of the past. A little bit on the smaller side.
I found this place to be such an oasis in Bangkok. Although located in the downtown area, but the place is so serene. It was the house of Jim Thompson, consisting of several wooden house that has been connected. With his love for plants, the gardens are covered with well maintained trees and flowers, which he described it as a jungle. It also housed many of his collections; statues, porcelain, etc. The ticket costs 200THB per person which include a 30 minute guided tour in the property. There is also a restaurant, shop & art center.
Wonderful place. Interesting History. The old Furniture looks great. Very Clean place. The Garden is beautiful.
After all the hectic travel around Bangkok, arriving at Jim Thompson house was such a immense pleasure for some authentic Thai vibe art and respect for the culture. After the tour with the guide, you are free to visit the garden on your own and finish either at the restaurant or the shop. I spent 1hour in the shop and ending up with plenty of high quality silk scarfs and gifts for my family. The designs are super modern if you want something a bit out of the ordinary and also very traditional. For every taste! The lady seller was also very nice!Have a visit there ;)
I adore the house, garden and various artworks around the museum. The guide tour itself feels clearly geared towards the white tourists. I guess it’s a general feel-good story about a Caucasian business man went to Asian, got fascinated by the culture, loved by the natives, and most of all, saw a great business opportunity. The tour did show how Jim and his partners embraced Thai traditions and how he was undeniably a crucial factor in the flourish of the nation’s silk industry, but the narration feels a bit monotone as it doesn’t take the Thai people into the picture and more about how tasteful Jim is. Besides, in each room there are screens that show art performance of another contemporary artist, which I feel kinda out of nowhere and don’t really fit the atmosphere.
It costs 200 Baht to join a group which includes a guided tour through the actual home. The tour takes around 30 minutes and some people will love it while others may be a bit bored. No photography or only phones are allowed inside the home. The gardens are reasonably photogenic
Very pleasant to present the place to everyone who interested in rich cultural heritage pieces of mr. Thomson. The antique stuff, the story. Even though the place located in the center of Bangkok but it was calm and peaceful. ⏳🎞📺📻
Must visit when you in Bangkok. Very traditional Thai house with great craftsmanship.Highly recommend spend a half day for visit and with your inside the house. And also spend couple of hour in their cafe. Great food and cafe. Nice environment, with affordable price. Very relaxing. They also provide the shuttle service to sky train. They also have boutique inside. High quality products.
Really amazing place. If theres one touristy thing you an do in town its this! Diving into the history and the world of the American that leverage the Thai silk trade. The tour will tell you the history and notable objects inside the house, with a quirky twist. Theres a stunning souvenir shop and an amazing cafe with a good selection of beverages. We ordered Thai iced tea and a butterfly pea beverage. So refreshing!
