Jay’s Kitchen - Asian fusion restaurant in Goldsboro, United States
Jay’s Kitchen in Goldsboro
Description
Privilege
Food is good, maybe a little above average. Its best you can get in Goldsboro for sushi/asian fusion. That being said, its all that I can positively say about this restaurant. The place is ridiculously under-staffed, the place was PACKED, and our waitress was seemingly overwhelmed and she came out uneasy which made us feel awkward. It is not the waitresses fault that whoever is running this restaurant isnt doing it well, but its also not the customers fault. If you feel like having a big group of people coming to dine out here your best bet is to go get your food somewhere else. I ordered poke bowl that came with miso soup, and my hubby ordered crab eggroll appetizer, one "fancy" roll and a salmon roll. I got my miso ten minutes in, my hubbys appetizer half hour in, one fancy roll& poke bowl hour in and the salmon roll took an eternity to arrive. Not mentioning the beer. It was annoying, because it was so little food that took so long to get. If you dont have much time to sit around, save yourself a headache and visit another restaurant.Another thing, I was aware that this restaurant has higher prizes but the fact that the place is SLOW makes you feel like you are paying up basically for nothing. If you value your money, travel out to Clayton and have a fancy sushi dinner there.Very rarely I complain about restaurants, and I always try to look at the positives and not be upset, but it was very hard because you are leaving so much $ for so little and this was definitely one time thing for us. I guess if youre still thinking about trying this place out, go ahead but dont do it during weekends or friday nights. Just friendly advice. We ended up paying $80 for 2 beers and everything else that I described above. Of course, we tipped our waitress nicely because we realize its difficult working in such conditions.I feel sorry for them.
MoreJay’s Kitchen located In Goldsboro, NC is a very nice restaurant. When one enters, he, she, or they will be greeted by a dimly lite establishment. For those of you are interested, Jay’s Kitchen offers free WIFI, just connect as a guest.I ordered a salad with ranch dressing; it was amazing. It was followed by Grilled Shrimp with scrambled eggs. It was absolutely delicious. For dessert, I ordered the raspberry-lemon cheesecake…OMG! It was freaking delicious.Overall, I enjoyed my visit. I will definitely be back to dine. Excellent!
MoreI went here for the first time to try the sushi and it was really good and fresh but the prices were like you were in New York. I dont know how a small town like Goldsboro can support this type of food and these prices? Portions were small and the burger came with no side dish. I wasnt paying so I didnt complain then but I thought I would let people know that this is not a place to go for reasonable priced comfort food!
MoreWe had a very nice lunch here. Although there were plenty of upscale options, we were able to have a wonderfully presented, and very tasty meal for a reasonable price.
MoreGreat service, delicious food.
Ran out of dang diet soda..my daughter really enjoyed the sushi..the nachos though good was surprising in size..and dont buy the fried ice cream..the crust gets soggy and has a terrible texture when this occurs..overall expensive..
MoreThe sushi is delicious, the Hamburger is good. It does not come with fries or onion rings those are a side item, it is a good size order of onion rings. I would recommend this restaurant and cant wait to go back!
MoreLiterally the best meal I’ve had in so long. I couldn’t get over how good every single dish was. If I wasn’t busy stuffing my face the entire time I would have taken pictures and left a review sooner. Will definitely be coming back! The staff was amazing and the food was even better! Amazing atmosphere as well!
MoreHad a wonderful experience in our trip here.Went on a Thursday night. Wasnt overly busy and the service was prompt and friendly. The bulgogi nachos were ridiculously good. Best Ive had in awhile. Followed up with the bulgogi burger (with the eggand it was also amazing. Definitely worth it.We also ordered 5 sushi rolls which arrived a bit after the meal but given the amount we ordered, not shocked that it took a minute to get out to us. And much like the appetizers and entrees, the sushi rolls were on point. 10/10 will be back.
MoreWent in for a burger lived here 2 years never tried Jays. I was surprised the burger didnt come with fries. $12 Burger and not that great. $6.00 fries? They wer egood but over salted and the Fries portion was good size but 19.21 for 1 burger and fries plus tax? Red Robin would have blown this away. I realized after I left I didnt see a charge for the iced tea- Thank God would have cost 22.21 before the tip. For my money 24.21 with tip I will never eat there again- sorry het with the times. No gourmet here.
MoreThis is no Jays Sushi and Burger Bar. I waited about 5 minutes to be seated on a Monday night, when there were plenty of open tables. The server was polite, and most of the sushi was above average, which is a vast improvement over my previous experience here at the start of COVID. Be prepared to have food talked up that you wouldnt like. The answer to "is it good" is an enthusiastic yes, with no probing questions about what I like or honest response about the flavors to expect. Dishes came out staggered, with the kids meal arriving about 15 or 20 minutes before any other dish except the miso soup. Jays Sushi and Burger Bar used to be my go to place for an Asian restaurant in Goldsboro and since it was shut down, Ive tried to like Jays Kitchen, but its the last place I would consider.
MoreOverall overpriced. Sushi is good. We used to love the fried rice before COVID and then after it went downhill. Not sure if they changed the recipe or cooks.Like all places they expect to get paid as they should for their services but when it comes to refunding your money, (cancelled order before food was madeit’s like pulling teeth to get it. Every time I called I had to speak to a specific manager. Either there is not always one on shift apparently or the one available is not allowed or incapable of performing the task. According to the staff “Only he can do it”, or someone else sys, “No he’s not the only one”. After waiting initial 10 days from when they they said we would be refunded, I’ve made 4 calls. Now I’m told to call back later at another specific time to speak with someone else.
MoreOverpriced and not nearly as good as they used to be. And now I hear of the restaurant not giving tips to wait staff that earned it and a roach infestation??? Yeah as a Wayne county resident, I won’t be going to Jays or Ninja ever again. Both owned by the same person. I tellAll my military friends and family to stay away.
MoreFirst time i came the service was amazing.. went on a date with my boyfriend tonight and never got either soup we ordered and my boyfriends sushi didnt arrive till after we got our check. I had to hunt down another waitress to get a refill for my drink and when the waiter (Cody u.Brought my refill i wasnt offered a to go cup.. We were not offered a reason for the sushi bring late but the table that was sat before we left was told there was only 2 sushi chefs.. All other staff we encountered tonight were amazing.. i honestly felt we were being rushed out.
MoreBeen a couple times, always super clean. Seated very quickly. Staff is very nice. Beautiful place on the inside. And the food was delicious. And prices are very competitive with smaller places where the food isnt as good. Highly recommend giving Jays a try.
MoreThis place is delicious. We went here for a friends Bachelorette party and we loved it. I have been there twice after that and is great.
MoreFood was okay, not worth the hype or price. Service was great though, it’s just very disheartening learning that the waitresses/waiters have to surrender their tips to the owner.
MoreDONT TIP IT GOES TO THE OWNER and Utensils were dirty even after asking for 2 separate pairs finally asked a girl there to get us plastic ones and she got a attitude we ordered sushi and food got no chopsticks but our male server was great and we left him a good tip didn’t know before
MoreGood place to eat. A bit pricey when ordering multiple order different varieties of sushi and when 10 people order on 1 ticket. Cant really complain as it was a celebration of a University graduation!!!
MoreThe waiter was absolutely careless and charged our card for another table after messing up our orders. Had to track her down to which she then charged the card again. Out $200 dollars in one night for a bowl of chicken teriyaki one sushi roll and one bowl of noodles...Called and spoke to the manager only to be told "i can give you 20% off".... No thanks Im never coming back. Absolutely absurd at how careless they are and refuse to help customers.
MoreDinner tonight was absolutely delicious. We may have found another go to place for sushi! The 3 rolls my husband and I shared were so good. The rolls were large and had ample fish and other ingredients. Food came out fast and the wait staff was friendly. Cant wait to go back!
MoreAs a person who has been to many Asian restaurants, specifically Korean I was excited to come here but overall was really disappointed .In any Korean restaurant you get an array of side dishes included with your meal and size of party. But paying $6 for a side order of kimchi is crazy on its own and for one steam pork belly bun is $5.All I can say is that this place is getting a lot of money off of their customers. Their food looks appealing but was really bland. The rice wasn’t seasoned well, the sauce on the spicy chicken tasted cheap, and their beef soup was watered down and tasted like a ramen packet. Unfortunately I ended up getting food poisoning and was pretty sick throughout the night after eating here. I’m not sure if it was an off day but can’t trust the reviews anymore :/
MoreWent for dinner on a Tuesday night...Ordered sushi for an appetizer and entrees...told the server do not bring out the entrees before the sushi. Of course, entrees came out first so we cancelled the sushi. Service was incredibly slow, never got to order a second drink...server was obviously not trained very well, no manager noticeable to speak with...bad experience and will never go back.
MoreWe are visiting the area and saw Jays had great reviews. They did not disappoint! It was delicious and our waiter was so polite and attentive! Definitely will go back!
MoreThe experience tonight was weird. Normally Jays is awesome. The food was certainly awesome. But the service was way off tonight. Our server, Joseph, was inappropriate on several levels. The service began with him apologizing for an order that was messed up and taking too much of his time to straighten out. Could we please wait for a while as he sorted it. No problem. I did not need to know the details, but he did tell us he was new, so I gave him a pass. Then he began hovering at a table close by with two women patrons. He doesnt seem to understand the concept of personal space. Every time he would walk behind the lady sitting away from the wall, some part of his body would brush her hair. There was plenty of room between her seat and the next table. No need to pass so closely. He would return to check us every so often and then return to hovering at their table. He began sitting on his knees beside their table and just camping out there. At one point, he asked one of the ladies for her phone number. She responded, "Excuse me, do you see this?" She held up her left hand. He replied, "See what?" And she said, "This is my wedding ring. I am married and you are being inappropriate." It did not discourage him though, he put almost all of his focus on them at that point and sat on his knees by their table almost constantly after that. Another server brought out my dinner. After a while, he did come over to apologize that my daughters dinner was not ready yet and started complaining about the kitchen. This began a pattern. He did deliver her meal after I had already finished mine, and continued to complain about the kitchen, not only for our service, but also for the service of other patrons. When he would walk behind my daughter, he was now touching her hair too. If he would have dropped down to his knees at our table, I would have called him out on it, as it puts him at a level to look under any skirts at a table. As the service went on, I realized the guy is a creep. When he served my daughters meal, he was not looking at our table, or even looking in our direction. He was looking at the table with the other two ladies. My daughter had to grab her drink with one hand and steady the plate with her other, as he almost put both into her lap. A little while later he came by and asked, "You want the check?" I just stared at him, and he said, "Its not the right time to ask, is it?" I responded, "No, it is not. She is still eating."I could keep going, but I would just be repeating the same behaviors already described. I am used to a much higher standard of service at Jays and am very disappointed in what I saw tonight. I will probably come back eventually, but it will not be soon. Get a handle on the front of your house and instill some professionalism.
MoreMy family and I have visited a couple different times. Each time the service has been great. The food was also very good. Sushi was great, lunch meals were more than enough food. My wife loves their salad and ranch dressing. Prices are on par with other restaurants in the area. We will return soon.
MoreWe had a very good lunch date yesterday! It was our first time going to Jays Kitchen and certainly wont be our last. The service was top notch from the hostess being very friendly as was our waiter. He came to check on us numerous times and held conversations which a lot of servers dont do anymore. I wish I got his name but he had a shaved head with a beard. Thanks very much!!
More2/12/22We went on a double date here. I was a bit confused because I thought I made a reservation at the other Jays sushi and burger place. That place is closed (maybe temporarily?). We were seated down immediately. Im glad we made a reservation because it was packed in there, and wait time was around 40 minutes. We started with the pork belly nachos. It was good (it has onions for those who hate onions like me). I orderd the scottish roll, it was really good. We shared the tempura ice cream. It was delicious! As for their cocktails, I had the geisha. I wish they had description on the cocktails. I wasnt really a fan of it. Yeah it was sweet but flavor was weird. Our waitress was nice but I could tell she got overwhelmed/frustrated for some reason. She checked on us, and we asked for to go plates. She responded "Well can I first get these plates" like of course, we werent demanding the to go boxes that very moment... She was this caucasion older lady. The bathrooms seeme cleaned and elegant.Overall great experience, great vibes and atmosphere. Would def recommend coming here for a date night.
MoreMy family and I went to eat to celebrate my daughter‘s birthday on Sunday. We were waited i’m by gentlemen’s named Isaiah. And he went above and beyond to insure that our experience was amazing! When we do visit this establishment again we will definitely ask for his area. Thanks so much Isaiah for making our family gathering very enjoyable.
MoreYou get what you pay for at Jays Kitchen. The food is great and customer service is top notch! Ask for Heather the next time you come in there.
MoreDelicious! One of my new favorite restaurants. The food was very delicious, and the sushi was prepared perfectly. Very nice interior/exterior decor, clean and well kept establishment and very friendly and attentive employees. Located in Goldsboro with lots to do while in town.
MoreWhat an amazing laid back atmosphere. They were short handed so the wait was a little bit, but TOTALLY worth it!Highly recommended
MoreThe absolutely worse place I ever ate in my life. The food I ordered was burnt, over priced, service... Or lack of ... Was horrible. What do you get for $9.. a cheeseburger that was a frozen WalMart bubba burger that was burnt, along with the bread it was housed in. Hard pickles piled on the bottom, and slightly grilled onions. The ketchup was in a tiny little bowl. The burger and the bread could have been made with the tar the coated the parking lot with but Im sure the parking would have had a better taste. After it arrives, my mother aske " was that it?? " And decided to order french fries. We never got them. She had some sort of over cooked chicken. It had some grisle in it the got lodge in her throat and I had to do compression to get it unlodged. In front of the staff! Who did not come to check on her well being.I have never advocated ever leaving food before in my life but this time both of us did just that without any guilt.I can say kodos to the cup of pepsie. It was not flat and managed to wash down the tar patty.Needless to say we Cancelled the french fries, and did not leave a tip.I will be cross posting this on face book, and MEWE. I often believe in giving people and places a 2nd chance, but maybe these people need to find another profession.
MoreHere on Business (From TX). Love Sushi and had to try this place: I do alot of traveling in the US and Intrnl. This place so WOWd me, got the Scottish Sushi twice, that good it was (for me). The Miso soup tasted way different than what i am use to (they make there own special soup and a must try). This place was so friendly, VERY organized and clean atmosphere, love the lat out. Bar is nice and (dont normaly sat/add thisthe restroom was wow (clean clean clean).
MoreOnly complaint...... The food is outstanding. Jays is upscale come on guys throw the chipped bowls away. Otherwise five stars! Cant wait to try more. Love the Samurai armor. The Miso was Oh So Good! Boaba Tea please. Lighting is very dim.
MoreThe food was delicious but we really enjoyed the live music by T. Davis. We will definitely be back!
MoreEverything we had from Jays was great! The salad was crisp and fresh and both the ginger and ranch dressings were spectacular. The salmon and tuna sashimi were very fresh and delicate. They even had love music Saturday night. It was the perfect entertainment with being not too loud and engaging listening to and trying to guess the cover songs with the table.
MoreI LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! My fiance and I when here simply because the outside is a black oriental looking building and it caught our attention. Inside it is very oriental and we loved it. We ordered a burger some salmon sushi and a steak and everything was so delicious. My favorite was the sushi and Im not a huge fan of sushi but, ever since we went there thats all Ive wanted. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a new place to dine on a night out.
MoreWent to Jay’s Kitchen for the first time. Ordered the Teriyaki Chicken that came with a side salad with ginger dressing. Let me say that the food was delicious. The waitress was very attentive and was very helpful in explaining things on the menu. Will definitely go back again and try the bison burger which is also pictured.
MoreLunch serving was the perfect amount to fill you up. Chicken very yummy and spicy, veggies were perfect without sauce. This was my first ever steam bun, tasty but surprisingly sweet, the pork belly mmm could eat that non stop.
MoreMy wife said 5 stars, I say 4.5 stars. Service from the waitress was good. Price was fair..ish. We only ordered sushi and they all came out in a reasonable time even on a busy Saturday night. All rolls that were fried(MCP & Sumo Specialcame out hot. The two that were not fried came out rolled solid and tight. Everything was tasty and there were no complaints other than the seating... for a table of two, they had us in a weird area of the restaurant where there were two tables on the sides of the wall with empty space in between. Besides that as my only complaint, the decor inside was nice and decked out for the holidays, big and spacious, very clean, and nice little tunes in the background to drown out the noise/commotion from all the people and work. Overall, I would come back.
MoreBeautiful Atmosphere!! Excellent Service, and Delicious Food!! It was our first time trying this restaurant, and we will definitely be returning when we are in the area, they have some of the best sushi Ive ever had anywhere!
MoreChris and Layla we are awesome and really care about customer satisfaction. The entire Thursday night sushi crew behind the bar were awesome. Food was great.
MoreEnjoyed the food and atmosphere... very pleasant!! Our was Giselle P ... awesome hospitality!!👍🏽🥰👍🏽
MoreAbsolutely phenomenal. The sushi is on point, staff super friendly, facility is gorgeous. You jave to try the corncheese appetizer. They make their own pig skins and theyre so light and crispy I swear they should sell them in stores. Will definitely come again, this week!
MoreI assumed this was similiar to the burger and sushi place downtown we like so we tried it. Well.....the menu is okay....unless youre strictly here for sushi. There is a plethora of options for that. The rest of the entree options are minimal and very expensive. My kid loves sushi so he loved the goldsboro sushi dish. He also had dumplings that were good. The prices were really fair and low for the sushi dishesOrdered the chicken hibachi. It was sub par at best. Chicken had chewy cartilage in almost every piece and the fried rice was hard and didnt taste great. Saw on the bill they add $3 extra for fried rice. Its in minuscule fine print on the menu. The dish was not worth $22. Ordered the miso soup, it was really salty.Service was nowhere to be found upon being seated and we waited almost 15 minutes before we saw a server. They were not busy Sunday evening either. Our waitress was very nice after the fact. Plates werent cleared and a rag was left on the table. Odd.I wont be back due to there arent any decent non expensive items on the menu if you dont like sushi. Not much "new" comes to Goldsboro and stays, so Im not sure, hopefully they can change a few things. Calling this place Asian fusion.....eh. theres places that do fusion really well.....this wasnt it.
MoreAtmosphere was wonderful! Staff was very nice attentive and efficient! What a great place to have dinner and fellowship with our group of six. We will definitely be back soon.
MoreWonderful food, great atmosphere, excellent service and clean. I highly recommend this restaurant. Definitely returning. Great choice for my 50th birthday dinner with my family.
MoreI have eaten here twice now and the food has been fantastic both times. The first time I went, I had the bento box and it was a great price for the amount of food. The most recent time, we got the corn cheese appetizer and it was so delicious and unexpected. Of course they are known for their bulgogi truffle fries and they are definitely worth getting. The staff is very friendly and attentive, but not overly so which is nice because some places do take it too far. The first time I went, they forgot to tell the server we were placed in her section and once she found out she immediately apologized and she offered superb service. The most recent time, it was our servers first day serving solo and we were her first table and she really handled it like a pro.The only con that I have is that the booth seating can be a little tight because of what the table tops are made of. They are beautiful wood slabs with a live edge which makes them nice to look at but a bit inconvenient for seating, especially in a booth setting.Overall, I will definitely be back. My sister and I have already discussed possibly having our birthday dinner here. I recommend this place for people who like hibachi food but in a more upscale setting. The decor is beautiful.
MoreVery pleased tonight! Were regulars at Jays burgers and gave this a try and it was awesome! A little more pricey but thats expected, delicious
