American fare including steak & seafood, plus whiskey, in old-school eatery with popular happy hour.
Jake's Grill in Portland
Description
Privilege
This fine dining American fare eatery is located inside the historic Sentinel Hotel, Portland, OR. These Happy Hour favorites Vine ripe tomato bruschetta and American Kobe beef carpaccio are a succulent pairing. I look forward to sampling the menu items.
MoreWonderful food and great service by our waiter Brian. I can definitely recommend Jakes!
MoreKatelyn was our server & she was great! The food & atmosphere were amazing and it has that nice historic charm, would definitely recommend!
MoreSimple food done well. I had a steak, mashed potatoes, and grilled beans and carrots. There was a great salty crust on the steak and the mashed potatoes were both creamy and very well seasoned. The vegetables were also very well seasoned. Great place for a simple, hearty, comfort meal.
MoreThe service was nice, I went for happy hour. But I definitely got food poisoning from the oyster I ate 😩 and the chicken tacos left a lot to be desired.
MoreVisiting in Portland from Cali.Salmon dish was awesome.Service was excellent.Looking forward to returning next time in Portland.
MoreVisiting from out of state on vacation.I had reservations at Jakes Grill.I ordered the King Salmon entrée. After receiving the dish I cut into it and noticed it was raw inside. Sent it back to the kitchen and later got it back. Again it looked undercooked but the manager assured me it was supposed to be a medium temperature.
MoreWow, best describes our dinner here Friday night. Had reservations for my wifes bday, so sat right away, checked on us very quickly and several times since we couldnt decide. Two adults, three teen daughters, steak, lobster, beef stroganoff & shrimp scampi. Very good. Excited to go back.
MoreWas in Portland on vacation and ate at Jakes grill two of the three nights we were in town. The restaurant had wonderful ambiance and the food was very good. The waiter, I believe his name was Bradley, was just the nicest most attentive server weve ever had. Cant recommend this restaurant enough.
MoreThe food here is absolutely delicious! My personal recommendation is the shrimp scampi. It is also a cozy and romantic atmosphere too. The staff is super friendly and attentive. One of our favorite restaurants in Portland. Five stars all the way!
MoreJake’s Grill is a favorite in Portland. The food quality was excellent and I enjoyed great service. 4 stars because I did two visits to write the review one was underwhelming while the other was just right. The kitchen runs smooth, the front of house either runs perfect or inefficient.First visit: slow service, average foodSecond visit : quick service - excellent food
MoreHave never had a bad meal or poor service at this place. Great atmosphere, food is cooked perfectly, servers are top notch.
MoreFish and chips were great, crab cakes were even better! Cocktails are superb!
Great atmosphere. The food was excellent. Location might get sketchy if youre there late or not staying close. Carpaccio was yummy as an appetizer and out main courses were so good. Well be back even if we arent staying a block away!
MoreI had high hopes here when I made reservations for my 29th wedding anniversary dinner but, unfortunately, my expectations were not met. I am a massive fan of seafood and have a weakness that forces me to order jumbo sea scallops whenever they are available on a fine dining menu. Tonight was no exception and I decided to add the 10 oz lobster tail as it was a special occasion. My wife ordered the 20 oz ribeye. As anyone who is a fan of sea scallops knows, texture is more than half of the experience and this was the first big let down as the scallops were dry and rubbery from having been overcooked. Although the lobster was beautiful, it too was sorely overcooked and quite tough. Finally, my wifes $56 steak was not tender and course through with gristle making almost every bite a challenge. At the end of the meal when I informed the waitress and subsequently the manager of the disappointing sea food, the response was to offer a free dessert. Although I appreciate that, for $250 I expected more in the way of service and especially the quality of the food. I will not be back and cannot recommend Jakes Grill.
MoreGood steak, great service. Its really hard to find good service these days, and this was it. Lovely interior, go dressed up or in shorts. Portland is laid back.Premium cocktail, great Cabernet, and Rib-eye with a side of mushrooms set me back $90 but worth every penny.
MoreA classic old time hotel bar Im Portland, cool, shady, classy. A really great ambiance. One of the best antidotes to just-so trendy fern bars. A great happy hour menu makes this a perfect after hours retreat on a hot day.
MoreIn town for a few days and tried Jakes. I had the Kobe burger which was quite possibly the best burger Ive ever had. Service was excellent too. The only problem is, I might not go to another restaurant while Im in Portland.
MoreLove the fish and chips, a bit crowded for a thursday evening and the food took some time but nice music, enviroment and i felt the dishes were good size , at a reasonable price. I had the fish and chips my boyfriend had a burguer
MoreWe had my birthday dinner here. We ordered filet mignon and stuffed salmon and shared both. Everything was delicious and the service was great!
MoreHas been and still is one of the best restaurants in town. Delicious steak and seafood, quality cocktails, Sunday prime rib and a solid HH are my personal highlights
MoreThe lunch menu was so so. I ordered the fried oyster and cant even finish all of it. And the service was lower than average. We got handed with receipt at about 10 minutes after food was served, which is not very polite.
MoreDelicious food, poor service. Was rushed through our meal despite asking to space out our courses. Likely wont be going back.
Moreambience, service, and food was extremely good. will be recommending to everybody that comes to portland. I will for sure going to be back very soon and getting another steak
MoreFrench onion soup, oysters, calamari, filet mignon, scallops, creamed spinach, mushrooms, creme brulee and bread pudding. Everything was delicious and service was great!
MoreEnjoyed the burger and our server was awesome (first review)! This is an update (second review): While the food was delicious, our server tonight was just okay (2.5 stars). She was not what I was expecting based on our previous visit which was stellar.. I guess it is hit or miss on service. The food as always did not disappoint: The fried calamari, shrimp scampi stroganoff were tasty. Our first review was 5 stars, this review is 2.5 stars. I will come back, but hope for a better server in the future.
MoreThe restaurants decor reminds me of some old movies. The server was really great. The food was pretty good. I would recommend for anyone as long as you dont mind to pay a bit.
MoreNice ambiance but food is way too salty.Low quality. Too much oil and butter. No other seasoning than a pound of salt. No view, and pricy. I don’t recommend.Positive note: Staff Brian was very nice.
MoreService was great, drinks were great, the food was delicious and the desserts were amazing.
MoreGreat place to stop in for lunch. The Dinner menu looks great! I will try it out on my next trip.
MoreJakes Grill was very conveniently located across the street from our hotel. The food and drinks were pretty good. In fact, we came here twice during our four day stay in Portland. We mistakenly thought this was Jakes Crawfish, which was one of the restaurants I wanted to try while in town, but Im glad we stumbled upon this instead. The first time, we came in on a Saturday evening for happy hour. Yes, they have happy hour (bar onlyeven on weekends from 4 to 6 PM! This would be unheard of in NYC. They have both drink and food specials. For drinks, I had the Pear-Adise (Absolut Pear, lime juice, simple syrup, orange juice, sprite). Im not normally a fan of flavored vodkas but I was in a pear-y mood and Im really glad I ordered this. It was really good, and not overly sweet. I ended up getting two of these! For food, we had:Raw Oyster Shooters - this was very meh. Unfortunately, it was drowning in cocktail sauce so thats all I tasted. I couldnt even taste the oysterDungeness Crab and Lobster Dip - this was basically like an artichoke dip with lobster. It was really good (but richand is served with some fresh pita breadAmerican Kobe Beef Carpaccio (served with baby arugula, truffle oil, garlic oil, crostini- this was my favorite. Everything just went really well together. It was like having a mini (rawbeef sandwichThe second time, we came on a Sunday night because my husband noticed they have a prime rib special on Sunday nights. This time, I tried the 2 Berry Punch cocktail (DL Franklin vodka, orange and lemon juice, blackberries, strawberries, simple syrup). I could only have one because it was way too sweet for me. For food, to start off, we ordered half a dozen oysters and some New England clam chowder to share. The chowder was a nice way to start the meal. The oysters on the other hand were just mediocre. Some of them were not shucked correctly. As for the special, for $36, you get two pieces of prime rib, mashed potatoes, carrots & green beans, and a soup or salad. This was pretty good but I must say that the star of the show was actually the salad. It wasnt a typical mixed salad, but it also had mandarin orange, candied walnuts, blue cheese, dried cranberries, with a raspberry vinaigrette. I dont even like walnuts but something about it just worked. For my main, I ordered the Northwest Cedar Plank Salmon (lemon thyme risotto, seasonal vegetable, harvest squash purée). I usually dont like cooked salmon because it tends to be overcooked but I really wanted to try the salmon up in the Pacific Northwest since its supposed to be good. Unfortunately, it was in fact overcooked. But I did like the harvest squash puree - it was unique.Overall, I think I enjoyed the happy hour experience better than the full dinner experience. I would recommend just coming for the happy hour specials and filling up on that.
MoreDinner was delicious. The ambience is beautiful. Our server Bryan was on point from the moment we sat down. He knew the menu well and made great recommendations. We will be returning.
MoreDamn good happy hour! Delicious boozy cocktails, great snacks and an amazing $8 cheeseburger with fries. Highly recommend Jakes happy hour
MoreBeing PNW natives we were extremely satisfied with the quality of food, atmosphere, and service. We started out with some delightful fresh kumamoto oysters, shucked perfectly, and quality is right up where we expect fresh oysters to be.I had the French onion soup, which was full of flavor and not overly salty as some can be. My husband had the chowder, it was top notch and equal to the better chowders we also find in Seattle. Our entrées were divine. Husband had the bone out rib eye, the char was well executed and cooked exactly to the medium rare he asked for. I had the cedar plank salmon, and it was hands down one of the best salmon dishes I have ever had. It paired brilliantly with the lemon risotto to create a wonderfully light but flavorful experience. We shared a creme brulee that finished off our dining experience beautifully.Hands down, we will return on our next visit to Portland. Thanks Jakes Grill!
MoreBasically a nicer bar and grill. Flatbread were too soft to hold sip or hummus crab dip was good..nice amount of savory and flavor. Chili cauliflower was ok...needed much more chili sauce, shrimp corn dogs were surprisingly good. However, hard to eat. Would have been better to have battered two smaller shrimp so there is a natural bite size. WI selection is pretty light and tasted expired.
MoreGreat service and delicious steaks done perfect! Best dinner we had while visiting Portland! 🍷
MoreFood was on point didnt taste like microwave food like other restaurants and everything was presentable. Everything was quickly served. I forgot the waitresss name (Amanda?but she was awesome. You betcha!
MoreWe stayed at the hotel where Jakes is located and decided to eat here after a fun day of running around Portland. Food was good. Portion sizes were quite large. Creme brulee after dinner was the highlight. Also, I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes and fries.
MoreA nice restaurant in the heart of downtown Portland. The vibe is definitely old school with a new school type of service and menu. The food is worth the investment. The staff adds to the experience with their professionalism and attention to detail. Of course the food is well flavored and served at the right moment.
MoreDelicious food and great staff. Tucker was very friendly and accommodating to special requests due to food sensitivity. Kudos to the back of the house staff as well. Stroganoff, Steak, and Salmon are so exquisite we didnt even wait to take a picture!
MoreVery nice place. We went for happy hour and the food was great; get the $8 happy hour burger of you want something filling and worth the money. It was my birthday and they gave me a chocolate cake on the house. Our server was nice, but didnt make many passed to check on us.
MoreIve never been to downtown and I got to my hotel too late for most foods. I walked around and found they were open, still serving food! Its incredible! This late and everything still tastes so fresh and delicious. The server and bar tender were so kind and helpful. This place absolutely saved my night. Thank you so much!
MoreWhat a classy place for a Valentines dinner. We had the pork chop which was very tasty and the St.Helens prime rib that melted in my mouth. It was pricey but more then worth the meal
Moregood food and service. cool old place which oozes of class and history. the crab salad was great, so was the clam chowder. Didnt love the french dip. but the food was good overall. service was tops. worth checking out.
MoreNice restaurant and the service was really good. Got the burger and it was tasty. Server also gave us a complimentary lava cake for our wedding celebration dinner. Also tried the lobster crab dip as an appetizer and it was delicious. Not pictured but tried the 2 Punch Berry alcoholic drink and it was very yummy. Definitely try it out if looking for a nice sit down restaurant downtown.
MoreEnjoyable happy hour menu... Burgers are huge and the ribs are tasty... The crab and lobster dip was Devine... Fresh tasty oyster shooters. Just the right size.. Are waitress was not very attentive.. The Floor manager delivered our last dish... I had to ask to have our empty plates removed from table... All in All.. Jakes is always good..
MoreI had heard so many recommendations for Jakes Grill, so I was excited to check it out. I ordered the Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon. It was grilled, with a pleasant bourbon-maple glaze, and served with broccolini and garlic mashed potatoes. I also ordered a side of Mac and Cheese. Unfortunately, the salmon was a bit overcooked (did not flake apart easily with a twist of the forkand the potatoes were slightly soupy. The Mac and Cheese was a bit too mild for my taste, but I can imagine it being perfect for several people I know, who dont like strong flavors (I would like to note that the fried onions on top were very good). Overall, the food was certainly good, but not exceptional. The service, however, was excellent - attentive and prompt, but not pushy or over-frequent. Also, I appreciated the attention to detail with regards to cleanliness (polishing wine glasses, etc.). I will definitely give it another chance, sometime - perhaps for their reputable happy hour.
MoreHad a reservation, for our anniversary but waited 25 min after to be seated. Was not asked how my lamb should be prepared, it was well done. (Not good). My girlfriends ribeye was rare and not medium as requested. The location is easy to find. Staff was friendly. Our waitress Taylor was exceptional. The quality of food is superb. The manager Laura was sympathetic, but i felt she did not think our dinner experience was worth telling her: too busy for us on our anniversary. Expect more from Jakes Grill.
MoreMade dinner reservations to celebrate our Anniversary @ 6:15 upon our arrival we were greeted by the host who with personal excitement was offering us a window seat that would be available in just a couple minutes...... 25 minutes later theyre scrambling to get the first available Window Seat cleaned and available to us..... Our server "Taylor" was very Charming sweet and attentive... she was probably The most joyful part of the evening... The drinks " Blue Mango" and the Strawberry Flash" were both very refreshing and enjoyable..the appetizer of the. Dungenous crab and artichoke dip was a great start to an evening.. My boyfriend ordered the rack of lamb which the presentation was spot on but unfortunately the lamb was over-cooked... the ribeye steak ordered mid rare was more rare and the baked potato was warm... moving on to dessert... the Bananas Foster was the highlight of the evening...creme brulee so so.......At the end of our meal we addressed all the events of the evening to "Laura" the manager on duty. We expressed our opinions and thoughts that occurred through our evening and it seem to just be brushed away... I will not return to Jakes Grill..
MoreThe food and service were excellent. The oysters are extremly fresh. Highly recommend this place for casual dine in. However, the only reason why I took one star off is because our recently experience. When I call to book the reservation, the host ask if we are celebrating anything tonight? I said its for my friends 21s birthday. The host reply gracefully and got us booked. since they asked, we had higher expectation. when we arrived the restaurant, the table was set up normally. Not a sign of birthday what so ever, the waitress didnt say happy birthday when we mentioned its my friends birthday. everything is just so regular that night which makes us little disappointed. I know it sounds nitpicking, but just a reference to our last years birthday experience when we dine in at Portland City Grill. the table was beautiful with so many birthday elements, the server come congrats the birthday girl, and even give her a little desert with a candle on it at the end. it was absolutely joyful. therefore, that experience raise our standard. However, Jakes Grill are still my favorite high end restaurant in town. We just wish it could do better on attention to details.
