Former royal palace built in 1861, now a gallery displaying paintings, carvings & other artifacts.
Located at the heart of Mysuru city, this palace is one of the important tourist attractions. It was once residence of royal family when the old Mysore palace caught with an accident fire. The palace has got a good collection of artifacts, paintings, instruments, wall paintings etc. Ravi Verma’s paintings are a must see here. Photography inside the palace is prohibited. However, the palace is not well maintained and there is no provision of any guide who will take you through the rich culture of Mysore preserved in the palace. So, the palace doesn’t generate much interest in layman’s mind. Overall verdict- recommended only if you have enough time of Mysore visit, can be skipped if time is a constraint.
The first place we visited in Mysore was this Palace named after a king called JaganmohanNice place in Mysore must visitEntry fee is Rs.60 for Adults.Really loved the collection of things here. The photography is prohibited inside the palace however its good that its prohibited as you will enjoy the collection inside it.Amazing collections of Arts and Artifacts, Really enjoyed exploring Ravi Varmas paintings, Clock works, Japanese made chairs, wooden carving, wall painting... Sad part is museum is not well maintained and the Gallery is a bit dusty. Must Go place in Mysore.
If you have interest in arts and culture, this is best place in Mysore to explore. There are so many paintings and items to depict the glory and history of Mysore Rajas. Staff are too kind hearted. I loved this place and it is near to Mysore palace. Must visiting place in Mysore.
Has amazing pieces of indian art. Would highly recommend checking the whole place out. Dont miss the top floor!
best place to visit, the structure and preserved ancient and antic things are just awesome
Good for history lovers and art lovers. Palace is good except spider webs and other dirt on windows. Parking place and lawn could be improved.
Really loved the collection of things here. The photography is prohibited inside the palace however its good that its prohibited as you will enjoy the collection inside it. To built the palace mostly they have used is wood and its a single column which is really awesome. Must visit place if you are going to Mysore. They charge ₹60 per person as a entry fee.
Must visit placed for Mysuru tourists and also Mysoreans. Time well spent, paintings and artefacts are worth viewing. Raja Ravi Varma paintings are a bliss. Well maintained, also gives a view of the royal family Lineage and wall paintings are mind-blowing!!
The first place we visited in Mysore was this Palace named after a king called Jaganmohan. It is converted to art gallery/ art museum where long long ago Kings and Queens furniture, mirrors, wardrobe they used, you get to see here... And the paintings are marvellous and Outstanding... Hatsoff to those artists who had an extraordinary talents those days!!... Who painted and did the fine art superbly... You can see the varieties of art on a rice grain to the art on a tusk of an elephant included in the post... Also the types of utensils majesties used, the dress they wore, the chairs they were sitting... Everything you can see... You will get into a Kings world and come out... Overall the excitement will be same right before entering to it and coming out of it... Everyone do visit here....
Entry charges around 60 ppThey have collections of mysore maharaj and lot morePainting by Raja Ravi VarmaCan spend around 1 hr and must visit if you want to learn more on mysore family
One of the underrated art museums. They have beautiful painting collections of Raja Ravi Varma, Roerich, Gangendranath Tagore, Chughtai etc.It also has an amazing historical French clock where miniature soldiers move at hours/minutes hands!
Amazing collections of Arts and Artifacts, Really enjoyed exploring Ravi Varmas paintings, Clock works, Japanese made chairs, wooden carving, wall painting... Sad part is museum is not well maintained and the Gallery is a bit dusty. Must Go place in Mysore..Entry fee is Rs.60 for Adults.
Amazing collection of arts but desperately needs attention. The building is in ruins and surrounding is full of bushes. Each painting and artifact has historical significance and will require minutes to examine. Art lovers will love this place. I hope Karnataka tourism department wakes up and protects this place quickly.
You will be able to see paintings of Raja Ram Verma. Visit this place if you interested to see paintings.
Art gallery of Ravi Varma depicting mysuru history and warCollection of king clothing and things..
Best place if you want calmness and want to see old articles and portraits.Few things are very interesting, Rs.60 was the entry fee per head. I felt its worthy.
- Beautiful art pieces and paintings.- Meuseum recommend only for art enthusiats and history lovers.
Great ambiance for artistic talent, all sort of historic art gallery ,furniture 👌, building plans, most visit place fr family time
The ticket here is 60 rupees per person. Which you can get from the main gate itself. They accept UPI payment as well. The museum closes at 5 and we reached there a little late So couldn’t get inside. But from outside its very huge and beautiful. There is open space as well. Guards are strict here. Just outside the museum there is a good pure vegetarian restaurant. We clicked few good pictures outside as the building was a very historic, huge and beautiful. Wish could get inside too.
It is one of the best visiting place in mysore here having so many collections for visiting from mysore kings..In this palace chairs are soo good
Beautiful museum for art lovers. There is special art work called "Glow of Hope" which is the major attraction of the museum.
This was a palace that was converted into an art gallery / museum a long time ago . The front hall served as auditorium for cultural performances . The collection of things belinging to the Mysore Kings can be seen here . It is nice to see that the old place has been fully renovated and the museum is kept very well . The best exhibits are the Originial paintings by Ravi Varma , given to the Mysore kings . And Haldenkar’s ‘’Lady with the Lamp” original . No photography allowed inside .
Marvelous collection. Paintings are exquisite. Murals are jaw-dropping . Can be preserved better. Some of the paintings, murals are actually decaying A guide in every floor d be much appreciated .
The time we visited the palace, it was quite and less people visited the museum. This palace shows the rich history of Mysore. The surroundings of the palace are poorly maintained and the entry fee is high.
One of the best place which showcases the importance given to art during the Wodeyars era.! Beautiful paintings are awaiting you, do visit the art gallery once.
Very good ambience, despite being a Government property. The Staff at the Reception guided us. They gave appropriate information about the place, explained the tourist attractions nearby. They also gave us correct information about the Breakfast timings and the items on offer. All this, despite being a Tourist not knowing Tamil, the local language.Appreciate the help and hospitality*****
After the renovation that took place in the recent times, the gallery looks even more enchanting. There are paintings by a variety of Artists and a whole range of other other antique artefacts at display. A must visit for History Buffs and Art lovers!
2km from Mysore railway station1.5km from Mysore Ksrtc bus standEntry fees 60rsApproximately closes by 05:00pmIts well maintained & very cooperative staffIt was real surprise when one of the staffs showed us the position to view the portraits whose foot and eyes followed you around the room. When we look a portrait in various sides of a room it will show different dimensionsIncredible painting of the Mysore Palace is masterpiece of the ground floorGlow Of Hope portrait is another major attraction
Good place to watch paintings however there is one thing I highly found disrespectful is they have kept an old man who sits at the entrance of the first floor room who unnecessarily shouts rudely at lady tourist saying no photos to be taken of the paintings. In the first place we knew that photography is prohibited n so we didnt intend to take any pictures so unnecessarily this man was acting rude just becoz we were carrying the phone with us only . The management should instruct or replace this unfit man to behave appropriately with tourist esp. Ladies n speak only if someone does wrong .
Sad to see the demise of what was a great palace. From the outside the vegetation is overgrown. After leaving footwear by the door there is a promising start with a microscopic view of three grains of rice. However the ground floor disappoints with poorly lit works of art that clearly require some effective restoration. There is a chunk of positivity when one of the staff showed me a position to view one of the portraits whose foot and eyes followed you around the room. The highlight of the ground floor was the incredible painting of the Mysore Palace in all its glory. The second floor was a much better improvement with some incredible artwork and ornaments which once again is not illuminated to show of the true craftsmanship. Perhaps employing a cleaner would be a good start to remove the layers of fingerprints that obscure clarity of many of the objects. The more contemporary pieces of artwork are incredible in both their vibrancy and colours. The separate setting for the "Glow of Hope" is perfect. Finally the third floor offers not only some incredible musical instruments. It also has a room covered with an incredible fresco punctuated with vibrant colours that make the visit worthwhile.
One of d must visit place in Mysore , it has all d history painting of Mysore kingdom & its really unique place care to other places , here v can see old paintings , elephant ivory carving , marble carving , furnitures used by kings , unique glass items , wood carving , paintings of all history of Hindu & many more . The entry fee is rs60 for adults.
A lot of history depicted in beautiful paintings. This place, despite its age, does have a lot to show in terms of the rich history Mysore has to offer. The admission price is worth the tour. The museum is also child friendly. The Lady with the Lamp painting should not be missed.
The gallery has a good collection but the maintenance of the building could be better.
Couldnt enter because I reached there at 5:15 . The place closes at 5:00 PM so be early. From exterior its magnificent. Just in front of the gate there is a good restaurant . Must visit for art lovers.
Good experience. Lot of good portraits including the lady with the lamp. When we look from different angles some of the paintings seem to face towards us.
This place is amazing! You cant find pictures of whats inside because camera is not allowed. If youre in mysore do visit because this is so underrated. Its got a bunch of Raja ravi varma paintings, paintings of historic significance, antique pieces, and much more. It is literally a treasure trove. To know more about everything in that palace, i would suggest you to talk to this grandpa(you can find him near the entrance of the 2nd room telling people "madam/Sir no photography theres cctv")
The museum with the famous Lady with the Lamp painting. It is a treat for all art lovers. Has an exquisite collection of royal paintings showcasing the rich history of the land.Wish it was maintained better, currently it is just like an ailing government museum.
Great kind of Arts are.here....antiques and everything but its not like Mysore palace so if you are looking for the same thing you can skip this....and the ticket price for adults is 60 per person
One of the finest art gallery ever seen. Front look of the building is maintained but original building at back side in poor condition. Some part of the building is renovated nicely. Cleanliness is maintained. Thousands of cores worth monuments, artifacts and original paintings are exhibited. Unfortunately inside of the gallery no photography allowed. Very few visitors visit this place. There is nominal ticket you need to purchase. If you are art lover or artist this is like treasure for you. Must visit place...
This palace houses a large collection of paintings in the collection of the Wodeyar Family. The building is impressive in the Indo-Saracenic style with floral arches. It bears looking at with care and is a work of art in its own right.Entry to the art galleries are on the posterior side. Plenitude is the best aspect of these galleries. The Raja Ravi Varma gallery is a highlight with many known works even to someone with a casual interest in Indian art.The chief highlight for me is "Glow of Hope" by S L Haldankar. This painting alone is worth the trouble of going to the gallery and the price of admission. Other highlights include paintings by Nikolai Roerich and Svetoslav Roerich.Definitely worth a visit if youre in Mysuru. Needs a couple of hours at the least to take in all the artwork.
A wide range of Raja Ravi Varmas painting collection has been displayed over here. And one of the largest paintings museum in South India where every painting , the musical instruments , the palace itself tells a story which is makes the place very rich in culture and reflects the Grandeur of the Royal Wodeyar Family through all the generations. A must visit place💯
One of the oldest buildings of Mysore, this palace was the palace where the Royal family had resided after the old Mysore palace was burnt during the wedding of Chamaraja Wodeyar’s eldest daughter. Old Mysore palace was built with wood in the year of 1861. Unfortunately a fire broke and burnt the entire structure. The then ruler of Mysore Krishnaraja Wodeyar III built an alternate residence for the royal family in 1861. However, owing to the fire in the Old Mysore Palace in 1897, royal family shifted to jaganmohan Palace. Jaganmohan Palace was the home for Mysore royal family from 1897 to the year 1912.
Being an artist myself, it was a dream to visit this place! But it was heart breaking to see that maintainance was so horrible that they didnt even let us in saying there no power... Shocking to know that a world class art gallery do not even have a generator!! Also the palace is in bad shape with windows and doors damaged inviting pests and rodents which can ruin the priceless paintings!!!Even the surroundings of the palace is kept in a bad shape!! Garden and lawn is all dried up, dirt all around!! 😭 Dear Mysore Administration authorities, please wakeup!!! Please take care of our countrys heritage places!!
The art and carvings displayed here are splendid. It is said that, it was a temporary home far the maharajas when their palace was burnt down. The painting of Ravi Varma, " the hope of light" is the main attraction. While you come across this painting here, please switch off the lights in the room to see its true beauty.Overall a wonderful place to visit. The entry ticket costs 60rs.
A good place to spend an hour when you are at Mysore. You get to know more about the lineage and dynasty of Wodiyar empire which ruled this place. This place is a collection of unique art objects including watches, clocks, paintings, ivory crafts, porcelain utensils & artefacts, musical instrument & other metallic and wooden artefacts including furniture thanks to the timely action taken by the 1st lady of the dynasty who was able to secure it after a major fire broke out at this museum. Was surprised to see paintings of some great national contributors including the fist Indian Engineer, the Bharat Ratna, the 9th Diwan of Mysore Empire...the one & only Sri Vishweshwaraiah ji.The place feels a bit neglected now and very few people visit this place. It can be made into a more interesting art gallery if collaborated with few other interested art lovers or corporates, as it has lots of space and scope for improvement.
Very beautiful palace. One of the tourist places in mysore district of Karnataka. The outside building view of this palace is marvelous. The entry ticket is too high. This place is very crowded. Having so many ancient collections. This place is extraordinarily clean.
Its a very good place to know the hiatory and to know about the mysore raja....and which which musical instruments they used in olden days and we can see the oil paintings
One of the most beautiful museums in Mysore. Loved the collections and the place itself is an art from the past. A must do place for any Mysore trip!
Palace and a Art gallery together...One of the oldest buildings of Mysore, this palace was the palace where the Royal family had resided after the old Mysore palace was burnt during the wedding of Chamaraja Wodeyar’s eldest daughter.....Old Mysore palace was built with wood in the year of 1861......Unfortunately a fire broke and burnt the entire structure......Must visit place for those who love painting. Every artist falls in love with those painting. Every painting describes about the history of Mysore. Well maintained and Excellent staff response.......Jaganmohan Palace is rich in royalness. The museum is a well preserved treasure. The facility of audio guide is very useful. It will take around 4hours for satisfactory visit. Worth the time. Outside of the palace there is a saree & perfume shop. ...Will definitely recommend to visit once..!!!
This place is clearly an example that one day everything will be forgotten. Some of finest collections of Raja Ravi Varma and many others are well preserved here. Its so sad to see that people dont understand the importance of their history. Staff waits as if they pray that somebody do visits the place. A perfect place to take kids along and introduce them to the rich history of Southern kingdoms and families and their history. King and his family temporarily stayed at this place when Mysore palace had caught fire and was being rebuilt
