261 Shanghai St, Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Market containing hundreds of vendors selling jade jewelry, accessories & good-luck charms.
If you like jades, this place is for you. You may be overwhelmed for sure!
Cheap Jade, pearl and other precious stones but no visitors😥
Best is just walk around and enjoy the place.Do not ask for prices unless you are seriously interested as the store owners are pretty aggressive to get you to buy things and they will likely follow you and keep pestering you. Also, you cannot tell if the Jade is true or fake.
will get hassled. I went to find gifts. went to a stall recommended on trip advisor by lots of people. Sandras pearls.
Great spot for all your gifts and presents, we have always gone to Sandra at stall 447, 375. Very helpful, never pushy with a sale and always remembers. Surprisingly affordable.
Really Enjoyed shopping here in Hong Kong! I bought a jade necklace while i was there and its one of my favorite peaces of jewelry!
I wanted to shop but the vendors are extremely rude and won’t even leave you alone. The they start grabbing you. I don’t want to get angry or in trouble so we just left with nothing. Their killing themselves.
Many jade stalls for your selection, you need 1-2 hours if you are looking for something. Instead of jade, I brought zhisha teapot from a nice old lady. She is very patience talking and explain me. Highly recommended.
Love it here and always seek out my friend who leaves us alone to pick out our favourite pieces of jade in peace and guarantees us a good price. I hate being bothered and it can get very stressful inside this place so be ready to barter and walk away as youll find what you want in another area on another stall. I doubt a lot of it is real but do check if you require sterling silver 925 as I do due to skin allergies before buying. Ive got some stunning pieces of jewellery that is a great souvenir of every visit to HK.
It is a unique tourist spot and there are lots of Jade stores here. It is nice and interesting place to visit but please do not ask for prices unless you are seriously interested as the store owners are pretty aggressive to get you to buy things and they will likely follow you and keep pestering you. If you are interested, do walk around and check out the prices, as the goods tend to be overly priced and is difficult to find the true bottom price. You need to be gutsy and cut the price sharply to find out the true bottom price. Not the kind of game many tourists would like to encounter. Also, you cannot tell if the Jade is true or fake. Best is just walk around and enjoy the place.
Lots of little trinkets to look at, though many of the stalls carry similar items. If youre looking for something specific, Id suggest you ask, and a helpful owner might run from stall to stall to help you find what youre looking for.
We went in the afternoon when the market was calm (almost nobody there). We left after 2 minutes when a pair of very aggressive female merchants kept trying to push a sale on us after we said no thanks and walked away (while we were pushing a pram with a small child). We didnt stay long and see the rest due to their behaviour.
They have lots of Jade to choose from. Good for little gift to bring back home for friends.Beware of fake Jade. If you cant tell real to fake. Pay more and buy from a reputable Jewelry story. Worth every penny. If you just want to try your luck. Might be lucky to get a good piece. Dont forget to bargain.
The Jade market is a must for travelors. It is filled with handmade items and jewelry as far as the eye can see. The shop keepers are friendly enough. One shopkeeper however, would not let me go until I purchased something. She was legitimately holding on to my arm and would not let me go. It was kind of scary.
Typical Hong Kong tourist trap. However, if you know what you want and are educated in jade, you can score some amazing jade products. I highly recommend Clara (stall 173 I believe). She has always treated me fairly and honestly.
Be honest with yourself. You are a tourist. You dont like Jade, You dont have a cultural link with Jade, you dont know real Jade from fake Jade! Thats the reason you shouldnt go. A lot of these sellers sell like for like products, they hussle you quick hoping to make a sale and they know you know sh*te. You will see the same table setup in many other places as you wander round the city.
I live in HK for 5 months and I went there twice and I am gonna go there again. Make sure to bargain with the staff. And be careful, not every one of the pearls or jades are real over there. They say which are real. Ask the staff for further detail
Dont expect genuine jade or high quality legitimate gemstones. Most of everything sold here is fake costume jewelry. However, the vendors will say otherwise... Dont be fooled.
The Jade Market has lost some its lustre from years past but remains a fun place for tourists to visit in Ya Ma Tei district just a couple minutes walk from the Tin Hau Temple. Stalls are open from around 10am to 5 or 6pm daily. Here you will find a couple hundred stalls selling all manner of jade and jade related items - beads, jewellery and trinkets. Prices range from very cheap to the ridiculous so best to know jade and how to judge the quality of the product before considering more expensive purchases. There is a lot of junk and fake stones mixed with authentic jade here. As such, have fun browsing and buying cheap items but unless you are an expert, youd better stick with high street licensed dealers for expensive jade purchases. After or before your visit to the Jade Market, its worth also seeing the nearby Tin Hau Temple. If you visiting near evening, have dinner at one of the many cheap eat places around Ya Ma Tai and Jordan before cruising through the nearby Temple Street Night Market, another fun place for tourists to visit i the area.
My sister and I went to this place by chance and picked up something from unit 430. Super nice lady with amazing crystals and marbles. I highly recommend this place. She is extremely patient - forget about negotiating prices. She doesn’t do price hassling. Be nice to her and she will pick something nicer for u!
Be cautious when you are going to buy jade in these stores because there were many fakes. The colors of jade are mostly fake, not natural, but man-made. I have seen even the whole jade is fake. In China, jade is classified as A, B and C. Class A is excellent, Class B is acceptable and Class C is the worst.
All the stands sold the same thing but everyone would approach you relentlessly. They’d start with a really high price and end up at a fraction of it, still a bit higher than others.Nice to see as an attraction but not great if you actually want to buy something.
Hah! I totally got ripped off. I wandered in there unprepared to haggle and still haven’t wrapped my head around Hong Kong currency. So I was like a bloody steak in a pool of sharks. But honestly it was a fun experience. I want to go back and do it again knowing now what I know. But alas they already took my money.
It’s an ok place to buy some beads. Not great range. Most sellers have the same stuff. It’s a must to bargain. Ask for more than 50% off the starting price.
A interesting place to visit. Something that you hardly see in the Asian region. Yes, stall owners would push slightly for sale but that’s to be expected. Genuine but inexpensive jade pieces. Expect to bargain.
If you dont come here prepared to haggle with the sellers, youll have to fight them off the instant you stop to look at something. I know its part of the culture, but we found it very off-putting to be put under such pressure and left the market immediately.
Stall owners too pushy, too eager to make a quick sale. Many moons ago when HK was not an SAR it was quite a pleasure looking at items on displays.I could not say the same nowadays. I like to examine goods before I make a purchase. Afterall it is no longer cheap to buy jade nowadays.
A fun spot to pick up inexpensive fashion jewelry. Lots of fake jade knockoffs, it’s a good place to buy affordable souvenirs , if that’s your interest; Nice spot to take pictures of market. Place can be little overwhelming hearing vendors selling and negotiating. Interesting place to walk through, in my opinion.
A small market with pushy sellers trying to sell a range of trinkets, jewellery and plenty of jade items. Make sure you bargain as they start super high and you can bargain them down very easily
Sandra Chau stall 447 is friendly helpful and honest... she designs and makes her own jewellery as well as showcasing carved stone items. I have bought from Sandra over many years... always a pleasure 😍
Pretty easy to find. Lots of vendors, so be aware of the quality of items you purchase. It was a pleasure meeting Irene in both #276 - very customer oriented and good quality products.
Jade market, buy not on impulses, be careful on big ticket items. For souvenirs cheap items are OK. Be sure to bargain on quoted price
Second visit on my return trip to HK. Cool market for "jade" focussed jewellery and trinkets, etc. Sellers are very aggressive but always willing to haggle. Have a strong will and be willing to say No. Cool items for yourself or gifts to take home
Be prepared for aggressive sales as soon as your foot is in the market building. If you can muster the strength, get past the front vendors for a quieter (and cheaperstroll through the repetitive stalls.
Mainly enhanced and faux stones. A few booths have quality stuff but bring someone who knows jade if you dont and are looking for quality. Haggle all prices. Some vendors might hold your arm to keep you from leaving.. just ignore them. Not too bad if looking for specific things.. But if youre just looking for jade trinkets I would suggest any one of the other market places that are all over Hong kong.
Enjoyed my time going from booth to booth while in Hong Kong. Most of the booths had similar product, so much of the time was shopping for the best price. My biggest problem was getting an honest evaluation of the quality of the different types of jade.
Very aggressive stall owners, and theyre fairly stubborn on prices. Definitely practice your haggling at Mong Kok or Temple Street first. Be firm, dont let them steer you or catch you for too long. However if youre looking for something made from "jade", this is the best place in Hong Kong
Lot of fakes, or flaws. The good ones are very expensive and they will never reduce. If you show your interest and a little professionalism (wiki on jow to check jadethen they will respect and even give flaws or C grades for lower prices like HKD 100. check my pictures
bought a jade braclet. Initially the seller say the price is HK1000 than she goes down to HK800 than to HK500 than to HK300 than HK200. I still dont want to buy. Lastly i offered her HK100, she accepted it and so i bought the bracelet. So dont be fool by the asking price or price stated on the paper. They can write anything they want.
Fun place to get some tourist knick-knacks. Obviously dont expect any real Jade (its all fake). Make sure you haggle - your first offer should be no more than 1/10 the given price and go from there.
This is a small but very jewelry and crafts market. If you are looking for a gift or something unique for yourself, check this place out. It’s surrounded by a nice park and busy food shops so it’s also a fun place to walk to on the weekends.
I love this place and try to visit whenever I am in the area.If you need charming or exotic presents for yourself or others this is a great place to come. From traditional Chinese hairpins, and fans and toys and charms, to modern carved netsuke, and carved stone/jade plaques/plates and amber and mother of pearl jewellery to untold numbers of ropes of pearls and beads, this is a wonderful series of small stalls offering up a mere tidbits of a taste of goods that used to be common fare in this country. This is where I buy charming unique gifts that are always appreciated by the receiver. You need to bargain and it is always better to buy more than one thing at a stall so you can bargain more effectively.Just a note for those unfamiliar with the area maybe get a taxi to take you there, it is just off Nathan Road but it actually looks a bit like a blue tarpaulined construction site.
I bought a jade bracelet here - medium to low quality as expected but within my price range. Stall 274 and neighbouring seem good, I would avoid aggressive vendors and prices that seem to be too good to be true.Edit: after wearing it for 7 months I can confirm that quality is much higher than initially expected!
The jade business is most active at this market so we decided to take a look while sightseeing in Yau Ma Tei. The market was divided into two covered sections housing rows of stalls. The vendors were friendly and left us to browse. We were surprised to find so many stalls selling jade. There were rings, bangles, pendants, earrings, good luck charms, zodiac animals, figurines and decorative items of various shades of green and white.
Fun to walk around! Prices will drop 70-90% if you start to walk away from a vender...
A truly fascinating place to visit whilst in Hong Kong. Its all undercover so if it rains you wont get wet. It houses all manners of Jade jewelry and ornaments and I almost guarantee that you will come away with something as a memento to remind you of your visit. Tony H
I love this place. Its a bit intimidating at first. Dont ever pay the price they originally give you. I asked how much a small trinket was and the lady told me $850!!! At the end I got it for $30. They will always see if they can take advantage of you. Be aware
Worth popping your head in but not much happening when we visited. A few stalls, many of which seemed to be owned or managed by 1 person. You may or may not get a good deal here (not sure).
Lots of jade. The sellers can be a little aggressive. There is so much, and so many similar pieces that it is amazing there are so many vendors able to stay in business. Haggling is a must here. If you are looking for high quality or unique pieces this isnt the place, but in this general neighborhood there are many jade shops outside the market. Some are very high end.
The haggle with the vendors was quite interesting - the experience is unique, especially if you come from a culture where haggling isnt common. On the down side, the selection is very poor, all the vendors have the same items, and a lot of them seem to be of poor quality.
